As an American I am painfully aware of the American stereotype of being ignorant of other countries. Today I am interested to continue watching Rick Mercer interview Americans to see what they really know about Canada and the United States. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
Canadians truly LOVE it when Americans and other foreigners believe these ridiculous things about Canada.
Tyler has been "learning" about Canada for three years, and he still knows less....
It adds to our mystique.
react to some Rick Rants. Those are signature rick mercer
The rants were my favourite
@14:20 Do they not teach Americans about the "underground railroad"? Canada was the destination my guy.
I know.. I couldn't believe that part myself.
sooo Canadian...."my guy sic" love it.
Honestly, they don't teach these kids anything anymore. And if they do, kids are so vapid and have such short attention spans that they don't remember it and probably just turn it into a racist joke or something. I am not joking.
@@Foxtrotalex considering they have more security measures then they have food or text books, can you blame them for not paying attention. The teachers are so afraid of being sued or fired due to the parents and political figures that they destroyed all foundations of the teachers being authority figures which the kids pick up on and end up feeling like they are the ones in charge.
There's no way to educate kids in a public setting without the respect of authority, freedom of expression for educators and flexibility to handle things in a personal way.
I don't think African Canadian is a popular term. I think we more go by what country they are from, ex. Haitian Canadian, Jamaican Canadian, etc.
Anyone remember when Rick or it could have been Mary Walsh that asked newly elected President Bush what he thought of Canadian Prime Minister Poutine and Bush replied "he's a really nice guy"? hehe
That was Mercer. Mary Walsh and her costume at the parliament bugging Harper was the best. She was the only one who could make him look somewhat human.
@@noadlor Harper had no patience with the 22 Minutes people, or at least his security didn't. There was one time when one of the female cast (not Mary Walsh) asked the various party leaders what they could offer the women voters of Canada (this was during a federal election year).
The Liberals, NDP, and Green parties gave gracious, friendly answers. Gilles Duceppe not only answered, but danced with her.
Harper? He had her handcuffed and hauled away by his security. He blew a chance to get what would essentially be a free ad for telling the voters some of his platform. And this isn't the only time he blew off the 22 Minutes people. What a jerk.
As for Mary Walsh, it was practically a rite of passage for party leaders to get on 22 Minutes with her. Most of them took it well.
Yes! It's in the next segment of this special I think and still running for office!
That’s the one clip I want to see him react to!
YOU should look up Peter Mannbridge and then you will get the real joke and have a good laugh.
Mansbridge
Nice voice and now RETIRED 🍁 TV ANCHOR PETER MANSBRIDGE does NOT have a bridge named after him....maybe down the "road" someday😊 MEL LASTMAN, A MAYOR OF NORTH YORK does NOT LIVE IN THE POLAR NORTH OF CANADA AND WOULD NEVER INSTIGATE A POLAR BEAR SLAUGHTER in his region which borders Toronto, Ontario, Canada as there are NO POLAR BEARS ROAMING THERE....One might visit a zoo and see a POLAR bear or a minimum of six there living in captivity. Otherwise one would have to travel 1,000 miles north to Hudson Bay in order to see the white polar bear variety of bears. Look up~~ Inuvut, ~~Northwest Territories ~~Labrador which borders to the north where the Canadian northern Archipelago starts....~~also look up the far north in the Province of Quebec too.
Maybe Rick should do a show like this on Canadians?
Bet he comes up with the same ppl ,, 30-40 yrs ago maybe not so much?
We were the end of the underground railroad. Many African American slaves escaped to Canada and gained freedom. We don't really differentiate "African Canadian" or anything else like that we just regard everyone as Canadian. I always find that weird that Americans always seem to have to make a distinction. Are you all not American citizens? Do you not all have the same rights and freedoms? Designating someone's this or that just seems to emphasize differences and cause more racial tensions and divisions.
I agree! Like the legend Morgan Freeman says "just stop talking about it".

A Scottish Canadian by the name of Sanford Fleming “invented” the 24 hour time clock ,time zones along with the prime meridian….so the clock and time zones used by Americans was invented by a Canadian to make the first skit even worse …..🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Cheers to 🍁 Mr. FLEMING 🍁 inventing the WORLD TIME ZONES (RUNNING THROUGH GRENWICH, ENGLAND)...also the 24 hour railway time development 🍁 ❤
Re: Peter Mansbridge, From 1988 to 2017, he was chief correspondent for CBC News and anchor of The National, CBC Television's flagship nightly newscast
well, 24 hour days were a thing for a while, gotta be something more to that 24 hour clock.
@@felderup sorry for the misunderstanding I meant 24 hour time zones…before Fleming each town, city etc had there own “high noon” in other words when the sun was at it’s highest point in the sky that was determined to be noon..if you could travel at the right speed (little hard at Fleming’s) but you could always be at the same time..Since every town had a different noon scheduling for trains was difficult because you know how long a train took from town to town but you then had to figure out what the time difference was from town to town was so Fleming create the 24 hour time zones so areas shared the same time…hopefully that explains what he actually created better.
He became SIR Sandford Fleming as well - probably because of this I am assuming, but not sure.

making "climbing onto him" even more rude and surreal.
Why does it tickle this Canadians funny bone?

He has a podcast now, called "The Bridge" Chantal Hebert is often on, and it's a pretty freestyle format, so I tune in for that.
We don't usually specify Black Canadian unless both parts are important parts of the story being told. Much like we handle Left Handed Canadians, or Very Tall Canadians. Canadian is a nationality. Black is a colour. Just like being left handed or very tall.
Lol at the idea of Very Tall Canadians. I am a Very Short Canadian myself.
@@kmacgregor6361 I believe the term is "vertically challenged", lol!
I always thought the term African American was stupid. Does it apply to those who live in every country? Also not every black person is FROM Africa!! Growing up my best friend's family had their roots in Trinidad and Tobago. He was no more African than I was. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying a black person or a white person. They're not slurs, they're broad descriptions to just simplify it. Furthermore my friend had never lived a day in his life in America! We live in canada! So he's neither African, nor American. I'm against racism but if you want to come up with a new term to make yourself feel better, keep looking because you haven't found it yet. This one is not accurate in way too many cases

@@lacteur1I love this expression, I keep it!
Tyler, this is why Canadians laugh at or get frustrated at Americans. We know all Americans are not like this of course, however, it is pretty typical. The annoying and frustrating part is when we are the country attached to the U.S. that has a huge border with them and have trade imports and exports between Canada and the US all along the east and west coast of the two countries everyday. We understand it's not taught in American schools as we are taught about the rest of the world in Canada however, you'd think one would want to avail themselves of some information of one of the biggest countries in the world that is attached to them. No we would never say African Canadian or Canadian African, we just say Canadian..
Exactly! To not realize the whole world is on a 24 hr clock?? A former episode
Us Canadians love Rick Mercer! Also try watching This Hour Has 22 Minutes. To "be fair" Air North still uses prop planes haha 😅
Across Canada, a lot of regional flying is done on propeller planes. Porter made a business flying them out of Toronto Island.
Air North also flies 737 jets, and most US regional carriers fly props too, so this kinda falls flat.
Toronto to Ottawa is prop

I just became aware that Rick Mercer’s humour borders on the sadistic side while addressing Americans !?!?!?
I've never heard 'African Canadian'. We're just all Canadians. There was a show down there, back in the olden days (lol), called Super Dave Osborne. His 'announcer' was Mike Walden and when super Dave prepped for stunts Walden would talk about safety and one of the things he said was that Super Dave always used "genuine Saskatchewan seal skin bindings". LMAO
I've heard the term and it's ridiculous. You're right, we're all Canadians. Citizenship and ethnicity have nothing to do with each other.
@@lauriegunn9636 I totally agree, I don't usually hear any differentiation in Canada due to melanin differences, everyone's just Canadian.
But the people I know that have ancestors from Ethiopia and Niger while also having been in north america since before the early 1900s tend to still use African American as a racial descriptor during those rare moments when it's seen as relevant.
I've always understood it as a way to reference the sad historical truth for why their families ended up here, which juxtaposes those families who moved here more recently who tend to just say African descent.
(The same goes for most of the Asian countries like Chinese American and Japanese American. Though its not seen in those from the middle East/India/East or West European/etc. which seems to depend on whether or not their cultural identity was vilified and systemically discriminated against at some point in time or not.)
Is that how it works in your region?
@@Drayghon In Canada we don't make a point of identifying some as "African Canadian" or "German Canadian" it goes against our culture of inclusivity. What we do do is allow you to express your heritage and we draw upon our differences as strengths.
@@Drayghon I know exactly what the term is MEANT to indicate and it's ridiculous. We ALL bring heritage, traditions, originality and distinctiveness to the Canadian tapestry, which is separate from citizenship. Having to preface "Canadian" with an ethnicity says "Canada isn't really my home".
Yes, I have notice the difference in how people from different parts of the world are called. I've never thought of it like that. I am Scottish/Cree. At one time we were called halfbreeds, now we are English Metis. lol Hubby is 'First Nations' (which has gone through various names), but he is Ojibwe. I guess First Nations is the best to represent as a whole, just as long as it's remembered that they are different nations. I feel the same about Africa. It is huge and there are so many different peoples there that we don't learn enough about because we have a tendency to put all the peoples from there under one umbrella. I think I have some exploring to do. 👍
ive never heard african canadian.. if the subject comes up canadians call black people, black people, but is def no more than a description of the person of topic, we are not scared to describe people by their color or nationality, but we do not define them by it.
THAT's what I was trying to find the words to say. Thank you.
Canadians who hyphenate their heritage use the country they or their parents immigrated from rather than a continent such as Jamaican-Canadian, Korean-Canadian, Irish-Canadian etc.
@@CrDa-i7e ya, thats true.. ime most would only do that in formal situations.. friendly social i feel that people who are or are-not from a certain place would still just say the perspective countries, if the person or their family is know to be from there.. like.. that korean dude.. or that nice polish lady, or, do you know the irish guy 3 doors down?.. and most canadians would not be offended by this because we merly use it as a description.. most people around here would not be offended if someone called them black , or chineese if they were in fact that.. just dont put the word "the" in front and use it as a generalization.. and you should be good here in canada were everyone is from somwhere else.
@@CrDa-i7e This is a question that gets asked on the long-form census. They want to know where your family immigrated from (can be complicated with some families). I use my dad's side for that question, since I know exactly where my grandfather came from.

In Canada we don’t have any designated people groups. So no African Americans no Latinos, etc. People are just people. Thankfully!
You know, after enough of these episodes aired, it's kind of remarkable that the US let Rick back into the country.
Perhaps the citizens of our neighbouring country never watched?
In Canada , Peter Mansbridge was an extremely popular and well known journalist and news anchor with a very bald head. So climbing up on Peter Mansbridge or getting on Peter Mansbridge’s head was another whole level of humour you missed.
Some Americans are surprised about us having running water indoors. None of this surprises me.

"What time is it where you are?" he asked.
"Look at your own clock," I told him. "We're in the same time zone."
A lot of people of African descent moved to Canada running away during The Civil War in The USA . It was known as The Underground Railroad . We have Herritage Minutes on this too

Fun fact about time. Sir Sandford Fleming, a Canadian railway planner and engineer, outlined a plan for worldwide standard time in the late 1870s. Following this initiative, in 1884 delegates from 27 countries met in Washington, D.C., and agreed on a system basically the same as that now in use.

The big question is how many citizens did they have to go through to get the asinine answers. And how did they get the political members to make themselves look so stupid. We realize there are stupid people in all countries but this might be taking it to the extreme

In Canada we generally just say "Black" when we only mean skin colour. African-American specifically refers to the ethnicity made via eugenics under slavery. You can also say "African" for people from that continent, and African-Canadian for immigrants from that continent... but why wouldn't you say "Nigerian-Canadian" or "Somalian-Canadian" (whichever apply) instead?
Canada had slavery, but Britain ended it WAY earlier than the USA.
Jean Chretien was our prime minister then, but he wasn't black at all. We don't use terms like Canadian African. Black people did move here. In fact, lots of them were slaves in America first and then, through the underground railroad, escaped from America and became Canadians. I have never heard any black person here call themselves African Canadian. They might say they originally come from Kenya or wherever they're from, but they don't refer to themselves the way they do in the States. Also... Oeter Mansbridge was a Canadian news broadcaster at that time... so, Rick was poking fun at Peter with that segment.
funnies part of this is. im pretty sure you dont fully realize just why the peter mansbridge bit was SSSSSSOOOOOOOOO HILARIOUS. if you didn't or for anyone else that doesn't know; there is a very famous, at the time of them filming, news anchor name peter mansbridge that worked for the CBC
About the 20 hour clock - I worked in Germany with NATO many years ago. I was away so had not changed my desk calender from February to March. That was also a leap-year.
When the USAF Master Sergeant was looking for people to deploy, he noticed my clender dates did not match his. I said my mother had sent to it me from Canada, so it was metric. He asked if I could convert it for him.
Look for "Just For Laughs" to see more strange Canadian humour.
I have not seen the first 3 parts. There is a segement about bringing back native rights to hunt Reindeer by throwing Tim Bits at them.
To make the joke even worse about Canada getting jets when this was filmed, the Avro Arrow was created in the 1950's.
Even though, it was cancelled by the government before a full development for use, 6 delta wing fighter jets were built way back then, in Canada.
It's an interesting Canadian history story.
The polar bear hunt joke is vaguely based on the very real seal hunts that PETA loves to complain about, without giving any context for the need or cultural context. The hunt of course doesn’t happen in Toronto, it happens usually off the coast of Newfoundland and in the Territories- seals are terrible for fish populations- so in the spring it’s legal to hunt seals. Despite what animal groups would have you believe fishermen don’t bludgeon the seals to death. Seal meat, however, is edible and for many of the indigenous tribes around Canada- in the Newfoundland area it would be the Inuit, Inuu & Mi’kmaq people- was and continues to be a source of food and although I’ve never tried it, it’s apparently pretty comparable to duck. Seal is a vital source of food and supply, including the soft fur, and the oils they produce for the Inuit that live in our Northern Territories, where supplies are otherwise very difficult to get- and honestly it’s still a tradition many of our Northern people were taught by their parents and grandparents and are proud of their heritage.
It’s Rick’s ability to keep a straight face with all the ignorance that makes this so funny. When Jay Leno did his own version of this, it wasn’t as funny. Why? Besides the in-jokes, I think it wasn’t because Mr. Leno wasn’t so deadpan serious during the “interviews.”
Great video. Yes there are many Canadians of African decent, some escaped slaves. You should check out videos on Canada's role in the Underground Railway.
The "Polar Bear Swim" is annual, 😂 unlike the mythical annual "Polar Bear Slaughter" in Toronto.
I am sure that a lot of those people are just going along for the fun of it.😂
No. We don't have a special term for black Canadians. They're just Canadians. For most Canadians, ethnicity doesn't even enter into our view point when talking about Canadian citizens. You're either Canadian or you're not.
Many African-Americans came to Canada, yes. Little thing called the Underground Railroad.
Google Peter Mansbridge. He was a news anchor reporter of CBC FOR 25 YEARS.
I’m sure that Rick must have encountered Americans who did have at least some knowledge of Canada!
Mel Lastman. LOL He was Mayor back in the late 90's to 2003. He passed away in 2021.
We don't call black people in Canada "African Canadians" because most are from Haiti and the Caribbean, not Africa. We don't use hyphens all that often when it comes to nationality.
Funny thing, my Quebecois daughter in law has no idea who Rick Mercer is, in English speaking Canada he is a rock star.
Tom Vilsack is now the current United States Secretary of Agriculture
Come on , you have people who think New Mexico is a different country
Of course there are people of African descent in Canada. Why on earth wouldn't there be?
Actually there are polar bears in toronto every new years day, they run down to the lake front and jump in to cool down
the clock should have been metric 100 hours per day 100 per hours

So much of the wry sense of humor in Canada originates from one place, our grand and intellectual province of Newfoundland.
