How far will it be for you? I remember my wife and I drove 2 hours to go see Interstellar on true IMAX years ago. But I know gas and inflation are hurting everyone.
Same I will be doing the same luckily because of a newly built Imax I will only have to do a 2 hour and some change drive. So I can make it a day trip. Now if they haven't built it my closest is a 4 hour plus drive.
I honestly wouldn’t have a massive issue with converting theaters if only they would do more to create the illusion of a bigger screen. When I walk in, it’s the exact same seat layout as a regular theatre, I look up, seen a slightly larger screen, and I kind of go “huh this is a little bigger” and forget I’m even in IMAX until the aspect ratio changes. Comparing that walking into the Boeing IMAX at the Science Center which was custom designed, the green is only about 20% bigger, but it feels like it’s 12 times the size. I think if they did overhauls on seating and really tried to get you closer to the screen, that would make a huge difference, but they just didn’t, and it’s not nearly as immersive.
@@Eighty.3 No. they don't have imax film projector. They stopped projecting IMAX movies as most of the movies are digital imax. You just flexed one of the best Imax Theaters in the world like its maybe not a real imax. Lincoln Square literally has one of the biggest screens in the world, and you are only "pretty sure" 😂 this has to be sarcasm.
Saw my first imax film top gun yesterday what I thought I was watching in a big ass tv as you know 1:90 imax is not much taller than standard widescreen
A true IMAX movie experience should be in 1.43:1, whether it was shot w/ IMAX film cameras like Nolan's films or just IMAX certified cameras like Denis Villeneuve's Dune. Everybody calls 1.90:1 the "imax ratio" which i find hilarious. Didn't even come close to 16:9 in terms of height. lol
The IMAX theater in the zoo in Omaha actually used to be big. But about 3 years ago they made the screen smaller and changed the name to “Giant Screen Theater”
Speaking to the Giant Screen Cinema Association, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond put it very succinctly: “We don’t think of (IMAX) as the giant screen.” www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/imax-looking-punier-days-just/
I remember the first time AMC installed their IMAX screen, I walked in, looked at the screen, walked out and asked the employee "did I enter the wrong theater, where's the IMAX screen?" I was told "it's not gigantic, but it's an IMAX experience." 🤦♂️
All my local theaters are of the standard AMC/Regal and one independent variety, so I really didn't know much about premium formats other than what I (thought) I knew about IMAX. I've learned a ton about competing formats from your videos in the past couple of days. My modest home theater setup always beats the local theaters, hands down, so it's pretty rare that I go out to a movie. But, I went out to see Top Gun 2 in a local AMC theater and thought the movie was fantastic, and the theater experience just OK. I'd never been to a commercial IMAX theater so I decided to make the nearly two hour road trip to an AMC IMAX in Pittsburgh expecting to be blown away. While it was noticeably better than the local theater, I really don't think the experience was that much better than I expect to see in my theater. That led me to get some education from your videos, and now I wish I was able to compare the Dolby Cinema experience of Top Gun with the others, but it's gone. I'd love to see you do a current, comprehensive comparison of the premium US formats in one video. I'd also like to see a video on the tips to look for prior to a movie's release that might guide you to the best theater experience. Thanks!! ~Frank
I will be honest with you the IMAX digital theater is a little bit better than your local digital cinema but is not spectacular by any account. The worlds largest cinema screen used to be IMAX in darling harbour in Sydney Australia. I seen a few IMAX productions on that and they looked stunning.
Same thing happened to me, going for the first time to a digital “IMAX” theater at AMC Sunset 24 in Miami was a disappointing experience. Yeah of course it’s better, but for the ticket price I was expecting something huge and of course the screening being a real IMAX reel, not just a good looking digital screening
If they had of done IMAX in super 35 or super 70mm they would have a cinema screen today that would be far better than any digital system. Until 8k projection is developed Digital cinema simply is not going to look that good.
I’m spoiled in Northern California, I’m Sacramento, have one IMAX GT, in Dublin, have another IMAX GT, in San Francisco, have an IMAX GT (Super Size), all within an hour drive from me, never have to go to a lie-max digital.
Don't fall so hard for imax's marketing schemes. There's really nothing special about expanded aspect ratio. Imax is just trying to save face because everyone was giving them crap about the smaller screens. Until imax puts laser projectors in their theaters, there are better options to see a digital movie in a "premium" movie experience than imax.
Someone figure out if the Palms Theater and IMAX in Iowa is a true IMAX screen because I’ve been trying to figure this out for the longest time. It’s a new theater complex and the local news says the IMAX screen there is 90 feet wide and 70 feet tall. 🤷🏾♀️ It’s also dual 4k laser? All all the laser IMAX liemax?
@@MovieUniversity checked the website. I think it might be wrong. Local news sources say the screen is 70x90. There it says 60x86? Even so I feel like those dimensions would be capable of showing true imax size even if it’s Dual laser projection.
In 2007 I went to an imax theater, the screen was very tall. Must have been an original screen. The building was not a standard theater design, definitely built specific for imax.
16 x 9 already is the dominant format. IMAX offers more information, a more immersive big screen experience. If you prefer 16 x 9 it sounds like you don't go out to theaters that much. It's a great home video ratio but theatrical experiences are designed to be different.
@@TheRealJohnHooper the whole small = accurate fornsub woofers is pretty well debunked at this point. I can only imagine the desire to keep bass levels low isnto reduce noise to neighboring theatres and businesses.
