- It's a while since I've made a food video, so here a weird Japanese candy kit where you make edible sushi-themed candy out of various gels and chemicals. Here's how it actually goes together when you don't edit out all the bits that went wrong.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and weird candy for assembly at:-

I got this kit from my cousin in Okinawa. I wanted to make it with my 3.5 year old son, and thought I was going to have to look up English instructions until HE suggested looking up a RUclips video. This is the one he picked. He watched and studied it twice and then we made it together. Great job! Thank you! An intimidated Mommy was saved!
This is the second time my son and I have made this kit, 5 months ago, and we watched this video both times. When he was 3, he studied this video 3 or 4 times and knew exactly what to do when we started. Thank you very much! A fun (and tasty) time was had by all again!
"There's videos on RUclips of absolutely everything."
You're not joking. There's this one video of a Scottish Mentski-lookalike making Japanese candy fake sushi!
GreyHulk2 Manxish*
c fahy Scottish
GreyHulk2 but at less there's a video
all we need to see now is a guy dressed as Darth Vader, wearing a kilt, playing flame throwing bagpipes whilst riding a unicycle and clearing snow with a shovel... t
simontay1984 go check it out at unipiper...
what has my life come to that I am able to watch someone make and consume candy
Im guessing you also pay via patreon for the privilege
9:00 I would even go as far and say "i just watched a big, bearded english man laying a buch of fish eggs..."
Not English. Scottish. Or Manx?
superilu I would hazard a guess that Clive wouldn't appreciate being labelled as English.
I'm not from the islands and not even a native english speaker, so what would i know how to call a guy from the isle of man? isleofmanish? at least i think we can agree on the man-part maybe?
It's cool that a food for kids in Japan is now being played and eat by many adults all over the world. ☺️
To answer one of your chemistry-related questions: Yes, there is plenty of calcium in sea water. The Japanese make use of this for a lot more than just sushi. For example, the primary coagulant for converting silken tofu (which is a thick white goo) into its more easily handled solid form is what they call "nigari salts". These can be either calcium chloride or magnesium chloride (either will work just as well), with small amounts of other soluble sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium salts as harmless impurities. A fairly concentrated solution of soluble calcium or magnesium works best, but if for whatever reason you haven't got any, then filtered sea water can be used instead, since it contains enough calcium and magnesium to coagulate the soy proteins in tofu.
Talking about weird videos on youtube. I once saw a grown man light a roman candle up a doll's arse. :o)
What channel was that on. Oh wait.....
"I CRAVE HUMAN FLESH!"
Or use a kinder surprise egg as a flamethrower igniter... laughed for hours :D
I wonder how many of us actually discovered this channel because of that doll vid.
me..
Clive, the tools you use in your videos are really important to me. I sincerely hope my new favorite tool shows up in future videos: The tiny green shovel.
Keep up the good work!
Watching this shows me that the people that have terrible experiences making these are clearly not patient enough, and that these should only be handled and made by engineers. Well done Clive!
The sodium alginate and calcium technique is usually referred to as spherification in the molecular gastronomy world. Bigger spheres can be made by freezing the alginate spheres then lowering them frozen into the calcium bath.
Actually, it tastes like shit
By far the best "Tiny foods kits from japan" videos ive seen... most entertaining Clive! Knickers, smelly ratbags and all... on that point i agree... bake sales can be dicey
I'm not surprised to see Clive making this, this is the kind of thing I that led me to back him on Patreon, I'm just surprised that this exists. I've been in stunned silence for the whole time apart from the cake sale comment that caught me completely off guard. Brilliant.
I thought that cake sale joke was a bit fishy.
bdf2718 crab cakes ?
Clive has a thing for cakes, some years ago he mentioned cake farting... that was odd...
Back then, Clive made me google cake farts...
+Mrflash222006
I was making a reference to the terminology used by some gay men for women. They call them fish.
I thought this was uploaded by a channel I'm subscribed to who exclusively uploads videos of them silently making these candy kits but then I saw your hands and heard your accent and was like "oh this'll be interesting"
Myself and my 5 year old just followed your video to make this kit! He's the latest BigClivedotcom convert! Great fun messy kits, although the trick is avoiding the temptation to eat it as you go (which I notice even you succumbed to!). The orange eggs are definitely the highlight of this kit. Great video!
I've got another of those kits to do. It's the burger and fries version.
Very very helpful! I don’t speak japanese so when I tried to make this I couldn’t read the instructions Your video was amazing!
for the first time since I was a child I actually burst out laughing at the old ratbag comment and I couldn't stop.
it's the funniest thing you've said on any video I've watched, I think it's because of how unexpected it was.
actually... the butt nun story was awesome too.
I made one of these kits once. It came out really well and the "rice" tasted really good. It had an interesting texture.
Thats the funniest Big C video in ages :-) the bit about old ladies with their hands down their knickers creased me up in a coughing fit!... and exactly the reason I never eat birthday cake at parties...lol
I know only a few out of RUclips viewer's will understand this but I had to add this. watching Clive and his comments it brought me back to my childhood memories of watching RAY RAYNER. IT WAS ALWAYS FUN TO SEE!
Calcium alginate is still popular as a wound infill dressing. We use it (as a fibre matrix) for management of "difficult to manage" exudative wounds, especially in the Palliative Care environment, (in order to minimise wound bed trauma during dressing changes).
Always love the clumsy bear version of the food channel very entertaining
Can`t wait for the next installment
I still remember watching these omg-
everyone play 6:55 and tell me you did not laugh 😂😂 “fruity” and the way he licks his hand 💀
my dad held a S T R A I G H T face, HOW?
Now make one with whisky instead of water...
Dom Ardbeg
Yes.
+Dom I simply cannot wait!
Duudde....Yes.
Heck you just gave me an idea to do with my family (everyone's above drinking age) since we got these kits and haven't touched em yet...
I'm watching a grown ass man make Japanese candy at 5:30am and I haven't slept yet what am I doing with my life
I'm just really happy to have the MDF bench with us at a time like this. Thanks for the weird food Clive
I found one of these at a local store for $5 US that we and our little girl used as a project a few days ago.
Honestly, it was a lot of fun to make and the original plan was to share it between her, my wife and myself. Little one liked them so much, we never stood a chance of tasting any.
Thanks for telling us about this and I was quite happy to find them for sale.
I just spat my tea out all over the screen when you said about the coffee morning at the church, yes i had to replay it again LOL.
It’s currently 9:58 pm here in the US and i used to watch this in my 6 grade class, brought me peace back then and still does it now (18btw)
"a lot of fingering going on here"
🤣🤣
Omg my dirty mind tho 😂
Oh hell no
You should definitely think about doing some more of the popin cookin packs. I've watched a lot of them, and yours was definitely the most amusing. :)
I have to say I was quietly hoping for another extra froffy coffee style video. Not disappointed, though.
what a pleasant surprise. I clicked on the video thinking that it was an Emmy video,.. turns out it's a Clive video :D
I know this was 3 years ago but if I’m not wrong the compartment you used for cleaning the items was for the soy sauce.
Not finding much in life to laugh about recently but I could not help but guffaw when your comment regarding "Smelly old ratbag with her hands down her knickers as she was making it" resonated through my headphones. I thank you, Clive, for being a gentleman, scholar and comedian. Long may you entertain the masses.
Hey Clive, you should do more of these, I really enjoyed it dude!
It's quarter to 12 at night, I have work tomorrow and I should be asleep. But instead I'm watching a video of a grown man making and eating candy sushi. Life is good.
I feel like a day watching these type of videos that Clive does and a selection of Ave videos could completely convince you that you've gone mad.
It's so relaxing to listen to you talk. Cheers!
i love how you used the compartment for the soy sauce to wash your spoon thingy HAHAH that’s really creative
man, big clive is suddenly cute. what a time to be alive.
Just a note, the sodium alginate doesn't have anything to do with the Squid allergen warning. Alginate is derived from various seaweeds (specifically brown algae). I'm guessing the Squid product is squid ink (sepia) in the "soy" sauce, or possible coloring in the putty candy.
It reminds me of the chemical hobby kit I had as a kid. Hard to imagine one can eat this! I would have loved to see your face while you are eating it.
"You can watch videos about pretty much anything on RUclips". Says the man making Japanese candy sushi!
it's been too long without a food video! you had me at chocolate covered cheese.
This is why traditional TV is dying. It just doesn't get more real than this.
My day is now complete, thank you clive :D
Clive you didn't mention the power output and how many USBs it had. Kappa
I'm surprised they didn't just use a capacitative dropper
well it does have a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER! wait.... wrong channel...
Amazing
Big Clive's Greatest Hits: ASMR Edition :D
Big Clive: RUclips’s favourite electrical engineer & sushi rebel
I put together a similar kit for a colleagues post-viva celebration (Job takes us to Japan often, an in-joke), though not sure it it was made by Kracie. It was a cheeseburger set, and instead of being made of candy, it was savoury. Mix the bun power with water, put in a mould, microwave and the result was a soft bread-like bun. Similar things done for the burger, ketchup, cheese, soft-drink, etc. End result, something that looked and tasted similar but not quite like a wee burger (and a hint of ewww).
Needs more LEDs. :)
Could get a string of LEDs and stick them into the gel to make a sushi themed string. I wonder if it's possible to make edible LEDs.
Nani Isobel perhaps.
love your food videos !!! keep up the good work!!
Haha I could believe your making a kracie kit! I've enjoyed these with my nephews. The cheeseburger kit was the best I've had
OMG I thought it was emmiemadeinjapan before I clicked 😂 I can't believe you did this!
Your video was actually far more entertaining than some of the others I've seen with people making Japanese foods like this... They may have done it perfect but it was silent.. And slightly boring.. And I like your accent.
"Some smelly old rat-bag with her hand down her knickers."
That's more than the usualy "blood, sweat, and tears" most people put in their baking. Must be a scottish thing.
I don't know what's worse the fact you made it or the fact I sat and watched you lolProbably the latter as you got to eat it lolKeep up the good work
I think this is how Ashens started. Before slowly declining into wondrous food stuffs such as "a whole chicken in a can."
Clive, please do "a whole chicken in a can" next
Big Clive, Speaks from the Mind 👏
“Japan is weird and we like that” Yep
If you don't make a series of weird ass DIY candy then I will cry
He keeps on thinking it doesn’t work, but don’t worry, you did pretty well! Thanks for the science facts
Great video! Keep it up
Wonder if you still have your phone 3 years later
@@elieniss65 do you, 6 months later?
@@alyssaholmes2135 do you, 3 weeks later?
I had no idea that I needed that when I got up today, but I ordered two ^^
We all know you live on the stuff, but the acting should get you an award:)
The "Ratbag" comment is comedy GOLD! Clive. My coffee shot out my left nostril. Also, the kit is sold out for now.
Clive!! I’ve come to expect the most excellent videos from you, with the most production value and professionalism! Imagine my disappointment, as I followed along with my own kit here at home - AND YOU DIDN’T COVER HOW TO USE THE “SOY SAUCE “. OH THE HUMANITY. I also cannot read Japanese.
More packaging than product! But if ALL sweets took this long to make ready to eat we could solve the obesity epidemic overnight. Thank you, Clive, for a most entertaining alternative to Saturday Kitchen.
This is one of the most informative and unintentionally funniest channels on RUclips! I love! These videos 'sushi rebel' 'some smelly old rat-bag with her hands down her knickers' 😂😂😂 funniest guy about!
"Some smelly old ratbag with her hand down her knickers" Ok, had to pause the video for about five minutes until I could stop laughing.
when i got the notification of this video i thought that i still was subed to the channel where they only do this but than i saw that its from bigclive :D
I love this video. I think it was so much fun to make and watch
Looks fun!
"Some smelly old ratbag has her hands down her knickers" - says Clive, as he makes food on the same bench that he has taken batteries, components, explosives and Lord know what else apart on...oh there is a certain irony here. I laughed my backside off at Clive's comment...even more so, when I thought about this!
Most hilarious video of You... thanks for this bit of time.
This is fun! I make sushi! I lived in Japan. I worked as a cook for some years.
I just got one. Thxs for th vid. Helped.
I just ordered $22.32 of food kits from some Japanese products website. Should arrive within 43 days. "Moko Moko Mokolet Japanese Style Toilet Candy Kit", "Okashina Salon Hairdressing Candy Kit", and, unquestionably, the most intriguing, "Crayon Shin-Chan DIY Butt Pudding Kit 4". And we used to make fun of Japanese transistor radios...
I swear I have never seen your hands so clean before.
Clive bought something off ebay and ate it.
That's some real balls.
Its quite clear they like playing with their food over there. None the less, its always fun trying new things like that. My daughter has a friend that goes thwre often,I will see if she can send sone really unique ones back, not normally located in the US.
Bought the same kit for my granddaughter. And of course she made me eat half :} It was surprisingly quite good
Finally! A video where he's unlikely to hurt himself or blow something up! :)
The burger kit is great!
Thank you, that helped me a lot, I ft my kit and watched it.
One of the neater sets..burger variety has a bit of nasty attempted approximation of fries and burger flavours. Tries one is neat to make and tastes ok. I have found napajapan has some neat stuff online as well.
Actually Clive. The fake chinese egg thing is pretty much now considered an urban legend.
I love these vids because there satisfying 😍😍😍
After 4 hours of mind numbing programming that cake comment made my day
You can use the alginate to encase brewing yeast (it's semi-permeable) and that makes the yeast reusable and you don't need to wait for it to settle out after fermentation.
You need some blue collar trash wine to go with it.
Spikey DaPikey I think to go with the theme of the video, he should have got some dehydrated wine powder and then "accidentally" spilt quite a lot of vodka into it :)
I was slightly hoping he'd use a spirit instead of water
May I suggest a nice 2 Buck Chuck?
Jeff Massey That comment would be lost on anyone unfamiliar with Trader Joe's. Good idea, though!
here in australia we call that goon.
I fell on the floor when you said about granny hahaha
this opened a door of memories i didnt know existed
i hv exams coming up and its 12am watching a middle aged white man making sushi out of powder and even consuming them. My life is complete
This is really interesting, I'm about to make a video on this and the japanese instructions isn't exactly easy to understand. :)
Thats actually pretty neat.
Hello! I’m back after a few years. Thank you so much for being apart of my childhood, I came back to see some memories. How’s life?
Life is good.
Hey Clive, hope you do a few more of these.
