Awesome that someone finally added the phone jacks for individual monitor. Complete game changer for all us rehearsing in small spaces who have neighbors to consider. Now make a version with more mic inputs and mixing from internet devices and I'm in heaven.
I have been in and out of studios since the 1980's, stuff is getting cheaper and easier to use. You no longer need to break the bank to get quality recording gear. Great stuff from Zoom.
Amazing work from Zoom Team. Really wished the L12 & L20 were motorized fader especially when you save & recall different Mixes for headphones. We're 2019 almost 2020. Hope ZOOM is listening, bring one Motorized ASAP. Great unit ;-) We're renting and selling these as hotcakes at Long&McQuade ;-)
@@galiekniamut3837I know it's been 3 years since your post, but I'm curious if this "dream device" that combines the L-12 capabilities with motorized faders and a digital snake output to FOH was finally launched by some brand. Do you know anything about a device like that?
Very cool, glad to see ZOOM is still developing there compact recorders and finally making it a fully functioning mixer/recorder in one. I have the ZOOM R24, which I have been able to use without a computer for over a year before I got my i7 Lenovo laptop. I prefer my Behringer X18 Air for it's preamps for recording drums. It looks as though they may have updated the pre amps for the L-12!
Could you tell me if the x air are better than this zoom live track? I have some things that use midi, like a piano and launchpad. So if I want to use with that I will need to buy more microphones regrettably
I have the ZOOM R24, not the Live Track L-12. I like the ZOOM R24. I just noticed the preamps and processing sound clearer on my Behringer X18 Air when miking drums. I did some test recordings on the ZOOM R24. Later I just used the X18 Air, and sent the mix to line level on the ZOOM R24 it sounded much clearer. The gates and fine eq settings helped. The demo of the ZOOM Live tracks L-12 sounded clean and clear, they did mention newer pre amps. The difference with the ZOOM R24 and the Live L-12, is it is designed to be both a live mixer and recorder. I purchased the ZOOM R24, because I wanted a recorder that would work great w/o a computer. It also, can be an interface. I still use the ZOOM R24 and transfer stuff over to my DAW later. I just prefer to use my X18 mixer to mic up the drums. The ZOOM R24 has built in stereo mics that I have used to record acoustic and a live jam. I would recommend using some different mics and experiment to see what you like. I have had great success with my e609 Sennheiser mics for my guitar amps. I have used some AKG c3000s too.
Hey there! Great question. Yes, you can absolutely record at the same time you're using it live. You don't have to choose between the two. You can even simultaneously record to an SD card if you wanted a backup, as well. I'd love to talk with you more about it if you'd like to give me a shout at the contact info below. Not a fair comparison, to be honest. The Scarlett is a more "traditional" interface while the Zoom combines a live mixer with an interface AND sd reecorder
Absolutely. Just ordered this LiveTrak, but also have a Scarlett. This thing is more for "recording on the go, and mixing back at the studio". It's mostly for demos, or home recordings, even podcasts, but not so much a solidified Input/Output signal router.
I only count 10 channel strips, I get that 9&10 have phono and 1/4 inputs but they still share one channel. So it’s really only a 10 channels, but two can be phono and 1/4, at least that’s what it looks like ?
Will this device record better drum audio and have better preamps than the Tascam DP-24SD? And will it be easier to record on this device than the Tascam DP-24SD (not using a computer)?
yes, they are getting really close to giving us what we want. high quality audio to match or be very close to daw in sound quality, stand alone and usb interface.
if we use L and R mono cables out from a piano and into channels 1 and 2......and if we accidently press the red 48v button.......will it ruin the piano due to surge?...thanks!
Question: I just want to make it clear. So this can do multitrack recording? Each with separate track? So it’s like an audio interface with mixer capabilities??
Hey, EJ. Thanks for reaching out. Yes, you are correct. This mixer can to a total of 12 tracks at once - 8 mic pres and a pair of stereo inputs. After recording, yes, you can mix down everything, as well as apply the built-in effects. You do not need a computer to record and mix - however, this unit can also be an audio interface if you do! Give me a buzz or send me a message here anyitme if you have any further questions. Rock on! Philip Courtney, Sweetwater Sales Engineer , (800) 222-4700 ext. 1968, philip_courtney@sweetwater.com
Do the USB audio return channels only work with the DAW outputs, or will Windows recognize those as outputs with the mixer as an audio interface? I want to route my main windows output audio to channel 9/10, then route my discord output to channel 11/12 on its own independent fader. Is this possible?
Just heard back from Zoom: "Thank you for contacting us with your question. The LiveTrak L-12 does not function as a control surface for a DAW." It's a real bummer that they removed that functionality, given that the older models (R24 and such) had it. Guess I'll be passing on this.
Dear Sweetwater, PLEASE stop labeling your overview videos as "reviews". Especially when they offer ZERO sound samples. ESPECIALLY when you have a conflict of interest as a gear dealer. Signed, Adam, Real Home Recording Founder, Audio Gear Skeptics Society
I got here from a recommendation for in-ear monitor solutions for a live situation. I can see the value of having the 5 monitor outs with their own mixes. The (dumb?) question I have is: how do you use this mixer for monitoring and still send individual feeds to the house PA? Thanks in advance.
Hey, Fisch723. You are able to get 5 mixes out via the headphones outs. Then you can get your mains outputs from the main outputs of the mixer. All of these outputs are independent of each other and are controlled from the mixer using the Fader mode buttons. If you'd like to do more in-depth, give me a buzz here or send me a message. Is there a way for person who has headphones on in A listen to specific channels while person wearing headphones in B listen to his own channels, while ALL still being able to hear each other's voices through the microphones??
Wow, I will get on board when they deliver the 16 Channel Desk !! When connected to a Computer do I get a screen display of modules on screen etc: ?????
Hey, lacuevadelvampiro. Thank you for checking out our video on the review of the Zoom L-12. This board is really an awesome piece of gear. You can do all of your recording and punches on this. You can also do so without losing your tempo or making changes to the tempo track. The functionality and quality are great and the preamps sound really good. It is a great recording device and mixer, you will love it. Thanks, Grant Embury, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1647, Grant_Embury@sweetwater.com
Question from a stoned and confused newb. will this allow me to record 12 tracks tracks simultaneously ? Like can I record 12 instruments on 12 different channels?
Hey, Freedom Shapes. Thanks for reaching out. With the Zoom LikeTrak L-12, you can in fact track up to 12 inputs at the same time. You have 8 mic/instrument inputs and 4 line inputs that all track individually to the mixer. It is a great recorder and makes it really convenient for tracking live and doing live shows. Thanks, Grant Embury, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1647, Grant_embury@Sweetwater.com
zoom r24 (rec 8 at at a time, for 3 times, for total 24 playback tracks, etc etc etc ) has far more features, and 2x r24 can be linked for 16 inputs at same time...
I actually ordered this over the R24, I like the option to record 12 simul-tracks instead of 8 and the preamps in the L-12 are allegedly cleaner. The R-24 looks like a sweet piece of kit though, it was a tough decision.
The best zoom r24 could offer is control surface of your daw. I believe L-12 or L-20 has more advantages as r24 almost 10 years old machine. Hope Zoom can consider about their firmware update to bring control surface ability 😁
If I understand correctly, the five monitor outs can be mixed individually so you would just have to plug in your IEM transmitter or pack to any of the Monitor Out jacks and adjust the mix as necessary.
yes, it can run the sound so you hear it, and you can record it at the same time. you could also do both of those, record your broadcast onto the mixer AND onto a computer software if you had it setup.
Be careful, this something different from the R-24, it is not better or worse. The L-12 is just a LIVE recorder, don't expect to do any re-re with it, it is up to 12 tracks in one take and that's it, you'll need the computer to pursue the recording if you want to add more takes, more instruments. The R-24 is a full all-in-one stand-alone recording integrated studio. Btw it is so sad that most of those new things coming are live-only recorders, with no possibility of re-re with the machine itself.
Hi I own the Zoom L-12 and it's great. Can you tell me how I'd connect a powered wedge monitor rather than in ear monitors? Would I connect it to the Monitor Out A Jacks (the L and R outputs, to the left of the Monitor Out Phone Jacks)? Or can it be connected to the Monitor Out Phone Jacks? Are the Monitor Out Phone Jacks balanced or unbalanced, and what about the Monitor Out A Jacks? Thanks.
Hey, Neil! Thanks for reaching out. You would ideally want to use the Monitor Out A L/R jacks in for your monitors. They are set up for balanced 1/4” out, whereas the Phone Out jacks are unbalanced stereo outs. Hopefully this answers your question! Let me know if I can help further. So.. can I record my vocals and guitar and then playback the recording to tweak everything for a live setup/sound check using pre recorded guitar and vocals?
Hey, Jason. Thank you so much for checking out our video and reaching out about the Zoom L-12. This is an amazing digital mixer with tons of flexibility and a killer sound. To answer your question - Yes, you can multi-track to the SD or your DAW through the board and then be able to route those back into the board to do a Virtual Sound check and tweak your settings. If there is anything else I can help with, don’t hesitate to reach out. Thanks, Grant Embury, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1647, Grant_embury@Sweetwater.com
If you connect a stereo synth to two mono inputs (because the stereo inputs were already full with some instrument or with the usb return), is it possible to select two channels simultaneously to apply exactly the same EQ to both left an right channel? The older R24 model has a stereo link functionality that basically allowed the mono inputs 1 and 2 to became stereo inputs 1/2 (the same applies to the other channels) but I can't find any information regarding that for the Livetrak L-12 or L-20..
Is it possible to record individual tracks as a solo recording artist and get the previous tracks through the headphones as monitors and finally mix the individual tracks together? This would be to make my own backing tracks.
Hi, Th3AirRaidSir3n. Thanks for your question! Used as an interface, the L-12 will record each individually. Does studio one recognise the audio interface and can all the channel be routed separately to the DAW. I've seen it used in Ableton. Is it as user friendly being used in studio one? You help will be very much appreciated.
Hi, So-what. Thanks for reaching out. The Zoom LiveTrak will record each channel individually into any DAW you are wanting to use. Very easy to do with Studio One. @@sweetwater thank you very much for you help. I'm looking into purchasing my first digital mixer and was really impressed with the spec on what the zoom offers.
Would this be a good option for silent band rehearsals, where everyone runs a line out from their amps into the ZOOM’s hi-z inputs? I have a Roland V-drums kit and would run a line out from my module into one of the mixer inputs.
Great question! The L-12 will not work as a DAW controller. I have been trying to find a mixer the would also allow to record the channels separately in Ableton. ( in case I make a big mixing mistake 😋 ) I found the Soundcraft singnature 12 MTK. But later I read that the EQ and effects are not part of the recording in Ableton, because those happen after sending the audio trough the interface. Are there any other options to solve this? Maybe a separate mixer and separate multi channel interface?
I got it to work with a usbc/usb conversion cable after updating the firmware and downloading the driver (what a weird thing to have to do in 2019 lol) working perfectly on my 2019 macbook pro running Mojave 10.14.6
Hello, shanelindemanmusic2650! The LiveTrack L-12 does not have FX inserts or sends so there’s no way to connect output gear. Give us a shout and we can discuss in more depth! Can I sync up a drum machine and sync up my vocals to the Zoom Live track even though their is no midi on the Zoom itself? Besides a DAW is their any other device in the market I can use to make this work as an all in one recording work station without a computer to sync up all my midi gear and keep my vocals in sync?
Most of the Daw's interface can't even keep up with the current OS changes ! With Zoom you can record to chip track by tracks. This deletes poor software companies and lame daw interfaces ! What else can do this ? Mitch ?
Can this be remote controlled ? Like have the mixer on stage but control it from out in the audience using a lappy or tablet? I have seen other mixers that do that, but can't multitrack record, that would be the dealbreaker thanks.
Hey, Will! Josh here at Sweetwater… Thanks for the inquiry! Great question. Unfortunately the Zoom L-12 can't be controlled by a tablet or iPad from the lobby. Im some what frustrated because I followed the instructions on hooking up my monitors and my daw and I cant get any sound out of he headsets or the monitors i hooked my PC to the usb and nothing.
You need to patch the outputs of 9/10 to your monitors and select USB 1-2 as your DAW outputs. It's really not user friendly but I had the same problem but think on 9/10 as your master outputs to your monitors
Advice please. Yes: when not needing a mixing console. The Tascam and the Zoom are on different categories. The DP-32SD is a multi-track recorder. The L-12 a live mixer, but with the capability to record multi-track to SD AND also to a computer when used as an audio interface, instead of just the stereo output like most mixers that have built-in USB audio interfaces.
I was really excited to buy this til I noticed there is no analog outs-ins for send-return... So perhaps the headphone outs could be use to route the signal to external effects unit then back thru the stereo inputs, but I don`t like doing workarounds like this, plus the effect would be applied to the whole mix and not the individual track, bummer...
Hello ! Can I get a clear anwer : With my multitrack recorder I can record my 1st track then I record the 2nd track while listening to the the 1st one then recording the 3rd one while listening to the others and so on. .Then I can for example re-record one of the tracks and when finihed I make the mastering and save it to a SD Card with Wave format. Does this machine can do that ? Thank you by advance for a straight and clear answer. Take care
From Sound on Sound test page, hope that helps: Overdub mode also gives you the ability to overdub onto new tracks whilst hearing previously recorded material, and to punch in and out on existing recordings. This is destructive and can’t be undone, but an optional footswitch is available if you need to do it hands-free.
Hi !.. O am using a Zoom R 16 and the advantage is the battety compartment that allows us to use the recorder without eletric source. With only 6 batteries wr can Record for 6 hours. Can the L-12 work without eletric source too?...
but the preamps are better in the L-12 but not better than a korg but i get what you are saying a portable multitrack is way better, i might even get a r16 but i have so much equipment.
can anyone please tell me - does this have all the functionality of a basic multitrack like the R24? or does the R24 have more and better options for recording? i am looking to make a demo CD of my band. I would also like to record / mix live but honestly getting the best CD recorded of our songs is where we are at the moment.

Hi, Francisco! Thank you for your interest! Unfortunately, the L-12 does not have any inserts or FX sends to use an external effects processor. You might be able to use one of the monitor outs for this purpose, but you would then be eating up your monitor output and 1 of your inputs for the return. I'm looking for something just slightly smaller than this to fit into a specific touring case. Similar width and depth is fine (smaller OK too) but the height needs to be no more than 2 inches max. Any suggestions? Don't need 12 tracks - 8 would be plenty. Needs to be able to record individual tracks and a master mix, physical faders, XLR/TRS inputs for at least 6 channels and needs feed out into camera. It's the golden fleece i know but if anyone has any tips on where to look I'd really appreciate it.
Could someone please point me in the right direction of finding out if this board can use multiple effects on the same mix. I find I can only use 1 effect at a time throughout the board.

it can be handy as the pre-amps dont have much gain. I don't record all 8 inputs at once but when I am doing recordings with 3 or 4 people at once then I find I need a pre amp or 2.
I had the DP32SD for almost 6 months, sold it. I couldn’t figure out how to export a recorded song, the controls were a nightmare to figure out, everything was over complicated, it was a huge paperweight. You and the guy who made the garbage tutorial are the only people I know who liked it. Kudos to you for figuring it out, I tip my hat and raise a beer to you. Zoom is for people like me who just want to record and export without needing to read a crazy manual the size of a novel or watch a weekend long tutorial. Simplicity is the name of the game for Zoom; I’m in.
Hey, Lamarcy. Very good question! Thank you for reaching out to Sweetwater and checking out our RUclips video. With the mixer you get the standard EQ and compressor on all the channels. As for your question about how many of the EFX you can run on each channel, you can only currently do one of the 16 selectable EFX at a time per channel. You can choose from any of the 16 EFX per channel. If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know. I do live streaming as well and now with all these different options I might be able to use it as a multitrack recorder. What do you suggest? Do you have both models in stock?

If you're looking to use in ear monitors, avoid the Zoom L-12. It's not possible to set up separate EQ settings for the in ear monitor mixes vs the main master mix. This is an extremely poor oversight by Zoom. I hope they release a firmware update to address this. I'm looking to sell my L-12 and get something better for this reason. They advertise it on the premise you can set up 5 separate headphone/in ear monitor mixes, but it's next to useless if you can't have different EQ settings on each track in the monitor mixes than the main mix.

So if it’s just me playing piano singing and then adding some stuff on later I mean I don’t need that much I still like to learn I’m not saying people manipulated for the wrong reasons but I think it’s just it’s just weird man, And if you never had a computer in your household no it’s not cheaper they could make it cause just the same they don’t do it because d.a.w. is the things that are that thing now they could incorporate it to very easily
Why only 12 tracks? How about 24 or 32 tracks that sample at 96HZ like this unit does? And a VGA output? At 96hz, if you have quality outboard channel strips (like a Rupert Neve Portico II or a Shelford channel) and a decent Mastering Compressor, you can compete with top flight studios,WITHOUT a computer. Can you Record on to the SD card while simultaneously using the devise as an Interface?
yes you can do that
How about a video on how to use all the features for the transport devise.?
is this worth buying in almost 2025.saw one at a pawn shop for $350.
Want this ... Have seen it for a time and now it is time for me to by me a Livetrack 12 :)
Good afternoon. Is it possible to control the L-12 with an iPad, using the software? Or is it only possible on L-20?

Can it handle dynamic mics like Shure SM7B straight up or still require a CL?
Nice one,
why dont sweetwater give a comparison of this zoom L-12 with the Scarlett 18i20 with their usage as inerface with a DAW point of view.
Not a fair comparison, to be honest. The Scarlett is a more "traditional" interface while the Zoom combines a live mixer with an interface AND sd reecorder
better comparison will be Scarlett18i20 with zoom UAC 8 18i20 the zoom kills the scarlett.
Will UAC-8 be a better choice.
3rd EYE Clics definetelly its a superior audio interface,i have the zoom UAC 2 and im more than happy with the sound.
Absolutely. Just ordered this LiveTrak, but also have a Scarlett. This thing is more for "recording on the go, and mixing back at the studio". It's mostly for demos, or home recordings, even podcasts, but not so much a solidified Input/Output signal router.
Why does the USB routing only work on channels 1-2 and not 3-4???
I only count 10 channel strips, I get that 9&10 have phono and 1/4 inputs but they still share one channel. So it’s really only a 10 channels, but two can be phono and 1/4, at least that’s what it looks like ?
Will this device record better drum audio and have better preamps than the Tascam DP-24SD? And will it be easier to record on this device than the Tascam DP-24SD (not using a computer)?
This is what i've been waiting for.
yes, they are getting really close to giving us what we want. high quality audio to match or be very close to daw in sound quality, stand alone and usb interface.
Great Video, This will save alot of time!
if we use L and R mono cables out from a piano and into channels 1 and 2......and if we accidently press the red 48v button.......will it ruin the piano due to surge?...thanks!
Would I still be wondering about routing issues if I buy the Zoom Livetrak L-12?
Question: I just want to make it clear. So this can do multitrack recording? Each with separate track? So it’s like an audio interface with mixer capabilities??
Hey, EJ. Thanks for reaching out. Yes, you are correct. This mixer can to a total of 12 tracks at once - 8 mic pres and a pair of stereo inputs. After recording, yes, you can mix down everything, as well as apply the built-in effects. You do not need a computer to record and mix - however, this unit can also be an audio interface if you do!
Give me a buzz or send me a message here anyitme if you have any further questions. Rock on!

@@sweetwater Wow. What other mixers similar to this? I need to know more options.
Ej Garcia -Main- Tascam model 24, the older one Zoom R24..
Do the USB audio return channels only work with the DAW outputs, or will Windows recognize those as outputs with the mixer as an audio interface?
I want to route my main windows output audio to channel 9/10, then route my discord output to channel 11/12 on its own independent fader. Is this possible?
Can this also serve as a control surface for post mixing in my DAW?
Just heard back from Zoom: "Thank you for contacting us with your question. The LiveTrak L-12 does not function as a control surface for a DAW."
It's a real bummer that they removed that functionality, given that the older models (R24 and such) had it. Guess I'll be passing on this.
Kel Lind that would've been a game changer!
Dear Sweetwater,
PLEASE stop labeling your overview videos as "reviews". Especially when they offer ZERO sound samples. ESPECIALLY when you have a conflict of interest as a gear dealer.

Yes, the title is misleading. This was a great overview.
It's a "review" not a "demo"
Rock On!

is this device able to "punch in" at any point of a song and edit, without throwing off the tempo?
Hey, lacuevadelvampiro. Thank you for checking out our video on the review of the Zoom L-12. This board is really an awesome piece of gear. You can do all of your recording and punches on this. You can also do so without losing your tempo or making changes to the tempo track. The functionality and quality are great and the preamps sound really good. It is a great recording device and mixer, you will love it.

It is a great recorder and makes it really convenient for tracking live and doing live shows.

zoom r24 (rec 8 at at a time, for 3 times, for total 24 playback tracks, etc etc etc ) has far more features, and 2x r24 can be linked for 16 inputs at same time...
That's what I'm going to get. Another R24. I love my R-24 and it's so easy to use. :)
Got the R24, only thing it's missing is midi & I'm only here to see bbn if this has midi.
I want some of the coffee that Mitch Gallagher drinks.
Can you add and In ear mix system to this, for portable monitoring possibilities?
If I understand correctly, the five monitor outs can be mixed individually so you would just have to plug in your IEM transmitter or pack to any of the Monitor Out jacks and adjust the mix as necessary.
Is there 30 channel for the live track?
I want this so muchhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I'm confused. So it can broadcast and record live seminars? yes?
yes, it can run the sound so you hear it, and you can record it at the same time. you could also do both of those, record your broadcast onto the mixer AND onto a computer software if you had it setup.
I almost regret buying my Zoom R-24... maybe I'll have to upgrade soon?
be careful and slow... do not downgrade...maybe
It sounds like the Zoom R-24 is better for me. Think about it.
Btw it is so sad that most of those new things coming are live-only recorders, with no possibility of re-re with the machine itself.
nuit noire re-re??? I don't understand that term?
I think you can re re safely since it has an overdub mode

Looks cool has it got a midi out For clock sync ? Thanks.
He says about recording 14 channels, when just using it as an interface and not using the built in recorder does that mean you can only record stereo?
Hi, Th3AirRaidSir3n. Thanks for your question! Used as an interface, the L-12 will record each individually. Give me a call and we can talk about your specific situation and make sure everything makes sense.

But the real question is, can you master/slave this with another L-12 to combine track count per session ?
I have been trying to find a mixer the would also allow to record the channels separately in Ableton. ( in case I make a big mixing mistake 😋 ) I found the Soundcraft singnature 12 MTK. But later I read that the EQ and effects are not part of the recording in Ableton, because those happen after sending the audio trough the interface.
Are there any other options to solve this? Maybe a separate mixer and separate multi channel interface?

any gates?
Would there be a scenario where one would prefer the Tascam DP-32 SD other than for the number of tracks?
Take care
Just what i want to do, did you get a definitive answer to this please. I want to know also does the DAW record the data from the sliders.
My R16 does that so I am sure this device does it also.

Hi, Francisco! Thank you for your interest! Unfortunately, the L-12 does not have any inserts or FX sends to use an external effects processor.
