I think most only need a dog as a deterrent. This is specifically why I got a doberman. Big bark, intimidating, and crazy alert. He makes eye contact with everyone which takes away their ability to surprise me. That's the biggest deterrent is eye contact.
No sound or person goes unnoticed by my dobie. He does a good job of giving off that "vibe" (people will cross the street sometimes) and he's good at convincing people he's badder than they are.

My dog perfectly understand I am the one that protects him so he doen't need to risk doing a bad choice that end up in damaging his integrity or even his life just for defending me or my family. That's really a really difficult choice no animal is capable to sensibily take in a human society. There is no really need for it.

I’m in Utah and recently learned that the way our law is written, if your dog bites someone who is trespassing on your property or intruding in your home than you’re still accountable for that and can get sued. There is zero protection. You can shoot the guy in your house, but your dog cannot bite them. Make that make sense. I just wrote my legislatures to see if they’ll do anything about it cause one of the reasons I have a dog is help protect my family and home. At least until I can grab a firearm. Oh and putting a ‘beware of dog’ sign up doesn’t protect you, it actually implies guilt because you’re admitting your dog is dangerous. It’s so twisted.

I thin most states are simular to yours. A lawyer told me once that the best way to protect yourself from being sued for your dog biting an intruder is to post signs saying that the owner is not responsible for any injury, illness, damage to personal property or death that occurs on the property. He told me that it depends on the judge whether or not it helps. He also said do not put up any kind of beware of dog or beware of owner or any other kind of threatening signs.

I’ve heard Rhodesian Ridgebacks are best because of their INTENSE bark and if an intruder is in the house they will corner them and hold them there til back up arrives (you with your gun) - much like how they were bred to hunt lions in Africa. They are fearless and highly protective

I have had 6 Boxers over 30 years and always felt safe. On a few occasions where I was startled, they turned on a dime to protective mode. If I am okay with a person, then they are friendly goofy selves. Even if I just think negativity about a person, they would become highly alert. We traveled the world with our Boxers we lived in Europe for 4 years and Asia for 4 years. I felt so safe when my husband traveled for work. Our last Boxer passed away 1.5 years ago. We just moved back to the US in February. My neighborhood is very safe. I live in Texas and we also have guns. I am going to get our 7th Boxer in July from Louisiana Boxer Rescue. I feel lost without them. I don’t think I could handle a more powerful breed.

Thank you for all your advice which has been a great help with him as I had not experienced a dog with his behaviour before. I completely agree with having a dog that protects. In my life, I've had a Rottweiler, a Doberman, and a Shepard. My current dog Tyson (Mastiff/Ridgeback) Looks like a Cane Corso, is large, and his look is scary. He tends to keep others at bay with just his look and I'm sure any who may think about harming me will think twice about attempting it. Over all Tyson is gentle and kind in normal situations. Quick story. I was driving in my car with dark windows. Tyson was in the back seat. I stopped at a light and a guy walked toward me asking me something. I couldn't understand him so I brought my window down a bit. He then came closer and asked for cash. I said sorry, I don't have any. He then reached into the window and I freaked out. I immediately pushed the back window down and Tyson went at him. The guy fell back in fear as Tyson tried to reach for him. All ended well as the guy got up and ran off. Thank God Tyson doesn't follow man's laws. He's not afraid to go to jail or to die. All he knows is to love and protect. Like I said, Tyson is a nice dog until He's NOT. 💙

This has been one of my favorites. Really good discussion and I absolutely agree with the points you made with this one. Crime is getting worse and stuff is getting crazy out there. I’m glad I don’t live in the inner city madness but it’s really starting to get worse everywhere overall and the criminals know they can get away with so much stuff. The criminals are getting bolder and bolder and the good people who just want to live in peace are worried about protecting themselves because of how backwards the judicial system has become. If you defend your life regardless of the court knowing it’s self defense, you’ve got a good chance of ending up in jail or prison over it. The self defense stories out there are mind boggling what can happen to good people just trying to protect themselves or their loved ones. I think people at higher risk should get a good deterrent dog as long as it’s something they can handle or they need some help along the way, be responsible enough to go get help from a professional trainer early on before they have issues.
Love the humor of this video too by the way. Absolutely hilarious some of the stuff you guys say. Adding my vote to the car/dog combo: My personal vehicle and dog combo would have to be the addition of another black Doberman with a new white Chevy Trail Boss with just a little lift to it sitting on some meaty tires. 😏
I vote that you should definitely both get Dogo Argentinos by the way. I’ve seen some nice bite work done with them. Impressive looking, powerful dogs.

Those of us who have been here since episode 1 get it and love the rapport of you and Joel. This episode was crazy but love the discussion about protection. I have to say, though - I have 3 dobermans, and the 2 "smaller" ones are way more intense than my big 'ol European 120 pound male. He's 2 1/2 and the younger male who was the runt of his litter is way more protective, vocal and just basically pissed at the world when he exits the house. Definitely nothing wrong with getting a dog to alert you and make you feel more safe, but it isn't necessary to put a dog through protection training unless you naturally have a firm hand, thousands of dollars to spend and your dog passes all the requirements and isn't afraid of its own shadow. And realistically, over a quarter of break-ins involve the burglar carrying a firearm, and even Garret Wing has said, "If someone breaks into your house and they have a gun, you can kiss the thousands of dollars and hours you spent on that dog goodbye. I'm not against getting dogs because you want to feel safe, in fact, statistics have shown that people are much less likely to break into homes with big dogs (black dogs, and dogs with pointy ears, specifically, which I found interesting). What I cant promote is everyone feeling less safe so let's just all go get Cane Corsos, Belgians and Rottweilers (which these guys are not suggesting lol). If you are not prepared for the skills, patience and exercise that is required to own a dog like this, then the downsides that come with not properly handling these breeds are far greater than somebody ever breaking into your home to begin with.
It makes way more sense to just get something like a lab or something less on edge to alert you, and also getting a firearm than to spend $60,000 and thousands of hours on protection work or relying on a dogs "natural protective instinct" to protect you. Most guardian breeds don't fully understand how to protect you properly on their own.
We have a GSD with a great let go and recall command, and we also carry, and that's really all you need. Don't go crazy and buy a dog that is beyond your means. It's way too much work and time you probably don't have when the former is way easier (I guess depending on your state lol), more secure and much more affordable. Great episode this go around. Crime is definitely getting nuts.

Excellent points. Most abled bodied men can kill even the biggest and meanest dogs with their bare hands let alone a weapon. Even trained K9 dogs are often fatally injured in the seconds it takes for police officers to catch up. People tend to both over estimate dog power and under estimate human power. For me personally I am fine with a dog that would alert me when someones there so I can handle it, rather than attack and risk getting killed or injured. But again thats me, i would rather have everything stolen from my house than risk losing my dog.

My father in law was murdered a few years ago. It’s made me fearful of my wife’s safety when I’m not home. While I have a lot of training, both tactical and mma, I fear for her life regularly. I got a beautiful all black, long-haired GSD and have spent a lot of time training him. I feel better knowing that he’s around for my wife when I’m not home. He’s an extremely loving dog but he’s built like a tank and doesn’t fuck around if somebody has bad intentions. His father is an agility champion and his cousins work in law enforcement with the FBI. Sometimes I wish strangers knew how kind my boy can be, yet on the other hand I’m grateful to know he strikes fear into people.
I’m trying to get my wife to carry at least a taser or mace. She’s a therapist and people are getting out of hand. Somebody was brandishing a knife and set a fire at her office (not her personal one thank God).
Tell it like it is Joel. There is evil in this world and no amount of well-wishing will protect you from it. You have to be willing to do WHATEVER it takes to survive. In my mma training, I’ve learned what my master calls RMA (reality martial arts). It involves eye gouging, biting, groin and nerve attacks, etc. For those of you who have not been in life or death situations, please understand that you will not be magically ready for it. You must train your mind and body. There is no polite way to survive when someone is to take your life. There are no referees to call foul.
Honest to God I believe we are approaching Tribulation. Find Jesus but, while you seek peace, prepare for war. May God protect you and your family Joel.

"And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.

They're not easy dogs, though, and I've had to learn a lot of dog training and dog behavior to keep balanced Akitas, but they're intense.
Very perceptive, very alert, investigating every noise. My male doesn't like anything he doesn't understand and he doesn't understand autism, I've learned. He isn't around it enough to know it's not a problem, he just knows its different and what he doesn't understand he steps up his game around.
UPS people won't come to my door. Some people they're particular about, and I heed their instincts.
Other dogs are the worst, though. Not tolerant of many dogs, and they make other dogs nervous, often.

My dog perfectly understand I am the one that protects him so he doen't need to risk doing a bad choice that end up in damaging his integrity or even his life just for defending me or my family. That's really a really difficult choice no animal is capable to sensibily take in a human society. There is no really need for it.
You guys better consider the type of society you have been building and where you went wrong if you need to task an animal with something you should be responsible of.

The beauty in my avatar was an ambassador for her breed, very well trained, very friendly and loving, never acted aggressive towards anyone.
One night at the park we frequented as I was walking her, two guys walked up to us, acting friendly as they called out a greeting as they approached.
One guy stopped about 8 feet in front of me, but the second guy continued walking to my left and around me, as he was at about 45° angle from me I looked at him, and he gave me this overly friendly smile as he still kept walking.
I KNEW what was up, they were going to rob me, the second guy was trying to circle around behind me so they could threaten me from two sides.
Maybe because it was dark and they didn't see her, maybe because she hadn't barked or acted up as they approached, but my 135#, 30" at the shoulders, girl was right at heel at my left thigh. As the second guy got about even with my left shoulder and about 6 feet away, my girl looked at the first guy, looked at the second guy, and cut loose with a 3 second ROAR!
It was NOT a growl or a snarl, it sounded like a lion roaring, it was so strong I could feel the ground shaking under my feet, and feel the sound vibrations beating on my chest. It was that strong.
The second guy spun around so fast it was funny and rejoined his friend in front of me, and the first one said "Hey amigo, is your dog friendly?"
Remember I said she was well trained? She was not on a leash, I did not have a hold on her, she didn't move an inch from my side the whole time. She didn't bark or growl at them, didn't lunge towards them, didn't do anything else after her growl.
Just stood there erect with every hair sticking up, making her look even bigger, and STARED at them. INTENTLY. Muttering "C'mon, make my day!" under her breath.
I looked them each in the eye to let them know I was wise to them, and just said "She's trained". Both of them looked at her staring at them, then wished us a good night and quickly walked away.
Yes, she WAS "trained", but not for protection. That she did on her own.
She was definitely a once in a lifetime companion.

Your Sequioa could have a timing belt or chain depending on the the year. The same years can have either or depending on the engine size 4.7 liter vs 5.7. 2009 5.7 has a timing chain which is lubed by oil and frequent oil changes are best defense against premature wear. If it's a 5.7 liter it's possible that a tensioner is stuck, which is what pushes the timing chain guide into the chain to remove slack. This slack could be what you're hearing as knocking. Could be as simple as swithcing to a thick viscosity oil 5w30 to quiet it down if that's in fact what is causing the sound. If it in any case the chain breaks (which doesn't happen often ) or the belt depending on year of vehicle it's pretty much bye bye engine. Both are pretty involved jobs and some other things my need replaced while in the front of the engine but it's much cheaper than a new vehicle. If you were at a dealership they were probably just trying to sell ya a new one with that bs about it not going back together right. You either have a payment on a car note or a periodic payment(s) for regular maintenance is the way I look at it.

My gsd are amazing however I must say the Dogue De Bordeaux is amazing! Relaxed yet will defend with their life! Nobody ever mentions them !! I totally agree with your choices and the ddb is great so long as they are awake! We had trespasser dog ran them off the yard and cornered them no training !! This is an excellent video and very accurate! I take my gsd everywhere ! The people out here are crazy! Walked my gsd there was a nut sitting on the street that dog kept eyes locked and walked backward until out of sight watching!! Two min later sees a couple no action dogs know!!! A great show!

I agree you absolutely need a protection dog but you need to also protect yourself and your family when you don’t have your dog. I know CA is horrible with this but all I’ll say is 2A. Protect yourself and your family. We just got a female German Shepard Puppy that we are bringing up for protection and also to help train other dogs (I just got the Beckham training program). The world is a scary place. Stay safe. LOVE your content.

I know many will not agree but dogs are not very valuable as protection from dangerous people, beyond barking to alert their owners or perhaps against petty theft because low level criminals may look for easier targets, but even smaller dogs can help with this.

I have 2 pit bulls,,have had many dobies and a Rottweiler. While my dobie and rottie(in that order) would have DIED protecting my life,I'm realistic in the fact that the only protection value my pits have is the fear factor. An intruder will see them(200 combined pounds)and hesitate, maybe think twice. Giving me time to flip the safety on my glock🤣

Every woman should have a protection dog ! And if you don’t want you can adopt a big big dog it can also scare the predator and also all the big dogs that I saw that were adopted were extremely loyal and they will protect you ❤

A Cane Corso is alot of work in all other areas BUT guarding comes natural to them so you never have to teach them that or worry about someone breaking in or harming you. I would say it’s the best guard dog but it takes a very specific person to raise them properly. ❤️

I would say that one should put the same effort in a rottweiler as in a Corso. Here in Sweden I see many out of control rottweilers. So I actually disagree om the point that rottweilers are easier to raise.

My Malinois, RIOT will destroy a grown man in seconds. He is highly trained to protect. 73 pounds. Malinois are not for 90 percent of the population. They require a lot of work, but worth every moment. Not the size of the dog, it's about the size of the fight in the dog. Malinois are pound for pound the ultimate warrior. When trained correctly, they are unbeatable. Speed, intelligence, bite, power. Malinois or Dobermans, you can't beat them for protection and obedience. Let's not forget loyalty.

The psychotic look of a maligator snapping its chops and panting would be enough to scare me away. I would definitely fear them more.

Hi Joel! My so.n has 7 daughters and he has a Malinois. He is for protection. I and my household has the littermate. Li e going with her on errand runs. It takes the opportunity out of opportunistic crime.
However, a family was hit and ran while walking their Belgian. So sad.

Komondor might look like a mop on the internet, but at 175 lbs and teeth, they will F you up. They aren't calm and passive like a Newfie,. They are mentally super protective, probably too aggessive for most. Like a Caucasian Shepherd

110 lb gsd was great on working horse farm - great with clients, visitors while great with kids in yard when strangers (shifty) would drive up. Only issue I had to put him in the house while playing squirt guns with kids, or kids playing with friends yelling and screaming (would go into protection mode-even against my hubby). Walking on leash in public flawless, would stay on property without fences. Scared the ups driver a few times, but he never went into protection mode with them-he was very discerning.

On 2 occasions -neighbors house 1/2 mile away-shifty guys drive up. Gsd went into mode immediately-guys left (once they were obviously looking to rob home). Female alone in county with kids he was priceless.
