I just love your books! Whenever I feel stressed and anxious I would open one of them and start coloring it really helps me out and it's so much fun to color as well. I have almost all of your books, and I can't wait to try this new technique
Thank you for this tutorial! I struggle with backgrounds using colored pencils, and your video is the best one I've found using soft pastels. I've never used them, but I will now! I just got my first book of yours, Magical Jungle, and my first set of oil pencils, Brutfuner squares, and I'm loving your book! I can't wait to get more!
Truly enjoy all aspects of your videos...pace, information, and the nice music. I have to watch sparingly because I launch into a spending spree when I see something I haven't tried before! Thank you for doing this channel! ❤
I just followed this tutorial and posted my final picture to Johanna Basford YOUR PAGES on Facebook and have almost 600 likes right now. I am only a beginner and you made me look like a pro!! Thank you SO much.
Thank you Johanna , your tutorials are so amazing and I have learned so much and in this time it’s great to have something to help pass the time I have all of your books and have been colouring so much . I hope you have a wonderful mother’s. Day with your beautiful girls it’s wintery weather here in Australia now so colouring is a great pastime thanks again
Thank you so much! I did not realize you had a You Tube channel. I tried to add a bit of watercolor around my finished coloring page to give it that cloudy vignette look and it was really hard. This looks much better!
Your pastel background puts a 😊 On my face and in my 💛 Heart.Chalk pastels are definitly gonig to be added to my arsnel❣️❣️Thanks for the inspiration 🌺
Thank you very much, for this video! I’ve been thinking of doing my background, with pastels to save on my PrismaColor Pencils. This video was helpful! Can this work on grayscale coloring, backgrounds to? Also why is the spray important? What does it do, for the pastels? What is it called?
So if I understand, spray the chalk area with a matt coating let dry then I am able to use my markers/pencils? Does it affect the area your coloring if you by mistake get some of the matt spary on the area you will be coloring?? Thanks really really useful video..
Hi Johanna! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and techniques with us! In the video you mentioned to not use oil pastels. It just happens to be so that that is exactly what I have accidentally bought (on the package it said it was also for scraping, but I'm thinking this was a bad translation). I bought Staedtler Noris Club 24 jumbo oil pastels. Can I still use them for my coloring? What are these best suited for? It would be great if you could make a video about that. Thanks!
You are the first person I've watched that has put down pastel before coloring but you could be doing that just to demonstrate the application and effect? It looks nice and i think it would help me with my pallet selection. Is it okay to to spray the finished piece with a glossy sealer after everything is completed or will it react with the fixative put down on the pastel if you did that step first? Thank you for demonstrating this medium. Have a nice day.
Your designs are lovely! I am visually impaired and wanted to inquire if you would consider producing some of your designs in a large print format? Thank you.
I would like to request some pictures of that Elephant completed. I want to color it for my daughter to frame and give as a gift, but I'm not coming up with a lot of inspiration as to how to color the elephant without him being just green and gray.
I have already colored an image itself in your magical jungle book (with Prismacolor colored pencils) but would like to have this type of background. Is it recommend to do these pastels after the fact or should I choose a different background style?
Thank You Johanna for this video, i don't know if someday i will try this technique because i love the result but hate to play with chalk Pastel & the spray the smell is Horrible and not very Healty, anyway i really enjoy to watch this tutorial!
Hi Johanna. I am allergic person with the dust of chalk. May I use instead the soft pastel. Or can u help me with any material for background thanks a lot
Hi Johanna. I'm one of your supporters and subscribers. I really want to ask u if you could do a chalk pastel giveaway or a colouring kit that u put together with chalk pastels in it. Please do this. I beg you. Thanks
Hi! Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you spray the fixer all over the coloring page, and if you do, does it affect the way the colored pencils lay and blend? Thank You!!!
If in Australia Jackson's sell West Art Workable Fixative which allows you to keep working with pencils after spraying the page. I also use it to seal Gel Pens. You can use it several times to seal as you work. Hope this helps.
Kitty van der Heul Yeah I obviously do. But with the volume cranked, it's still hard to hear and clearly I'm not the only one with the issue. But thanks for your oh-so-helpful comment.
I think it must be at your device end because I could hear it fine and my computer volume setting was at less than half. Did you also check the RUclips volume for this video - occasionally they don't seem to be in line with your own volume settings.
Omg. Not hair spray. Good Lord. Please give actual art supply options. Why in the world would you recommend a spray that is all but guaranteed to ruin a beginners art?
Thank you some much for the videos l am 71 and still love to color Your videos are very helpful
Day 3 inky art school

That's so pretty. I've never worked with pastels before. Thanks for showing us how. Can't wait to try it!
I color first and then put on the charcoal. Even if I liberally spread going over the colored page, it does not cling at all to the pencil.
This tutorial was sooo useful :D I bought a little set of pastels a while ago, but had no idea of how to use them. Now I'll try this method for sure!
Thank you Johanna , your tutorials are so amazing and I have learned so much and in this time it’s great to have something to help pass the time I have all of your books and have been colouring so much . Nice thorough presentation. You are pleasant to watch and listen too. . A bit of a newbie at pencils and pastels. Thank you for the education. Patrick
Great tips - many thanks for sharing! I just started using pastels to hand-color my black and white photographs and these techniques will work great!
I love your books. So far have 3, just got the Christmas one this week. You are so gifted. God bless. TFS
The way u do it it seems so easy ! Ta for this vid as I always had problems with colouring plain background !
Great idea with the cotton swabs. Back in art school, we'd just use our fingers for spreading... lots of blisters came out of that!
I absolutely love your books thank you so much for this video 😊 beginner over here.
I'm such a huge fan of your work I enjoy all of the books have them all I think but thanks for the tips many blessings
Thank you so much! I did not realize you had a You Tube channel. I tried to add a bit of watercolor around my finished coloring page to give it that cloudy vignette look and it was really hard. This looks much better!
Thankyou for showing this video looks stunning xx 😘 🦋💐😊🦋💜💙🧡❤️🤗🫠
Thank you for this. This is the exact kind of background I wanted!
Thank you for sharing your talent. I enjoy watching and learning from you. Happy Thanksgiving!
Your pastel background puts a 😊 On my face and in my 💛 Heart.Chalk pastels are definitly gonig to be added to my arsnel❣️❣️Thanks for the inspiration 🌺
I've noticed that if I color with pencils first, I don't have to be as careful with the pastels because it doesn't stick to the pencil.
This is amazing especially the eyeshadow wow x
Hurray! Just what I needed!

Thank you for doing this video. Thank you for all your tips.
Thanks for the demo & tips & tricks. 😊
Thank you, I just learned how to do a nice background.
Your designs are lovely! I am visually impaired and wanted to inquire if you would consider producing some of your designs in a large print format? Thank you.
Great video, thank you.

I think I would mask off the main image! Lovely results!
Thank you for the instruction.
Thanks for your great tip Johanna, BTY I heard you just fine! I have some cheap funky eyeshadow colors I bought also to try. Happy Colouring
Thanks Johanna! Do you always use pastels before you color with pencils/pens?
I have already colored an image itself in your magical jungle book (with Prismacolor colored pencils) but would like to have this type of background. Is it recommend to do these pastels after the fact or should I choose a different background style?
Are the chalk pastels you used in the video (staedtler) highly pigmented?
You are so creative
Thank You Johanna for this video, i don't know if someday i will try this technique because i love the result but hate to play with chalk Pastel & the spray the smell is Horrible and not very Healty, anyway i really enjoy to watch this tutorial!
Sylvie Dufour g
It's very cool!)))
this was really helpful thankyou! Can you do it after you colour the rest of the picture?
Hi Johanna. I am allergic person with the dust of chalk. May I use instead the soft pastel. Or can u help me with any material for background thanks a lot
I love it !!!! 💗💗
Hi! I was just wondering if you could use this method on your canvases? Thanks!😊
hi, the colors are like chalks or oil crayon
i want to get one, but i dont know what kind i have to buy
I love it! I want to be just like you!
What hairspray is best for fixing the pastels?
Lindo o seu trabalho 😍👏👏👏
Sync you doing for the background see you’re the greatest
Great tutorial. Thank you :)
Hi Johanna. I'm one of your supporters and subscribers. I really want to ask u if you could do a chalk pastel giveaway or a colouring kit that u put together with chalk pastels in it. Please do this. I beg you. Thanks
Can’t hear you. Did you say you spray the pastel with hairspray and then you color in the elephant with colored pencils? I wasn’t sure what you said.
I used hairspray but still get pastel off with finger and bled through page
Is it easier to do the background before or after you do the other colouring?
Are you going to print all of your book in the small version?
I just purchased some crayola pastels to practice with
I love this video!!
This is also a faster way to create a background!
How to colour clouds with pencils?
can you please do a book on mythical animals please i live your books
Mythical creatures, unicorns dragons, Tanuki would be amazing
it would be amazing
Mimi Morozova Art Omg YES.
Does the hair spray stay sticky
Hi! Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you spray the fixer all over the coloring page, and if you do, does it affect the way the colored pencils lay and blend? Thank You!!!
Jami Morrell , there are fixants that you can go back and still work on your page and others that don't allow any more pencil work.
CHERYL PARR q
Katrina Turner You need to buy the fixant that allows more work.
your pensils will still lay and blend fine .
If in Australia Jackson's sell West Art Workable Fixative which allows you to keep working with pencils after spraying the page. I also use it to seal Gel Pens. You can use it several times to seal as you work. Hope this helps.
Where do you get these pastels
Will this be available in Japan?
Vc é de mais👏👏👏👏👏
you're so soft spoken. wish the volume wasn't so low!
kaylamarie8907 don't you have a volume button? 🤓
Kitty van der Heul Yeah I obviously do. But with the volume cranked, it's still hard to hear and clearly I'm not the only one with the issue. But thanks for your oh-so-helpful comment.
kaylamarie8907 even with my volume cranked i struggle to hear also however i use earbuds and that helps tremendously
kaylamarie8907z
🥰
Why not oil pastels?
Thank you 😊
You're my idol
you can also achieve a similar effect using watercolour in 2mins
To stop getting smudges and marks on your work place a piece of paper over the area of your work you are not currently woking on.
susan lawson yes and it works so.well I use gel pens n I do this to keep from taking the glitter off the paper w my hand.
hard to hear you !! volume all the way up too.
I also almost cannot hear you at all.
I think it must be at your device end because I could hear it fine and my computer volume setting was at less than half. Did you also check the RUclips volume for this video - occasionally they don't seem to be in line with your own volume settings.
