This is PERFECT and so true - I am sick of people saying "but you're black!" when I say that I'm into rock music, or like Doctor Who, or figure skate... and I'm pretty sure people of Middle Eastern heritage get the same deal, too. Totally agree with the person below who said this video needs more than a million views - I'm thinking ten million... ! ;)
Seriously, I understand you! Someone will always comment about how I love indie rock, can't dance, and have an extreme love of anime and British television. Just because I am black I therefore am not supposed to love these things?
Could not agree with you more Simone, honestly it gets to the point where you wonder how these stereotypes even came about in the first place. My mother and my grandmother never acted "black" either. It's so weird. :/
I wish I could say that was true. :/ My family are nomads... I've lived in nearly 20 different places in my life. And I've had pretty much the same treatment everywhere... :( apart from when I am working in nurseries/play groups because of course, very young children won't have any idea of those sorts of stereotypes yet. They see a black/Asian/gay/etc person and it's just another adult to play games with, lol. :) I live in the UK though - apparently race is dealt with better in this country than it is in North America, so I'm not sure. Where do you live?
Not gonna lie, when I heard about the movie as a kid...I really did think it was about music & dancing. But when I watched it, I said: *"Wait a minute. This movie ain't about no damn dancing. This movie is about fucking!!"*
It's painful to experience too. But that's exactly what happens. You demean yourself as you swore you never would, but you do it thinking about paying the rent and you kill it. And the blonde gets the part anyway. Every fucking time. EVERY FUCKING TIME. But cheers, UCB and Nicole Beyer (and Sasheer, who I believe wrote this; I saw her perform it too). Bring that funny! And fuck Kenan No Talent Thompson.
I've seen this part been played too many times in movies, and then there is the reality where you are expected to "be black." The music you listen to, the way you dress isn't black...I mean society has brainwashed us so much that most people just refuse to themselves anymore. Sad.
Still find this amazing after several views. Obviously, Nicole Byer is superlative. I also love the details of Lauren Adams' work here--the way she eats the power bar thing is priceless! The little shift of the glasses, the crazed faces--brilliant. Sad that this is true, but so wonderfully presented--Great work, everyone!
GURL..... You are my new favorite person! I came upon your podcast and decided to google you. I found this and you are fn hilarious! Thank you for making my day!
Brilliant clip. I must have watched this ten times already. Why doesn't this vid have more views? I laughed so hard at how ridiculous the scenario was and also cringed at how spot on it was. Brilliant. More views, this clip needs more views! (This also accurately captures what it's like for AA actors as well.) I think I'm going to watch the clip one more time.
OK,I am a Black woman trying to break into the entertainment industry, and I LAUGHED! Yes,there is a serious, underlying message in this skit and yes it is sad and disturbing. I have been there,I have been asked to be more "urban" or "ethnic" and I'd be like "I'm SORRY! I was raised in the suburbs! We're the only Black people in my neighborhood. How do you expect me to sound???" Nicole Byer still had me in tears and I think she and the whole cast did a good job.
L.o.v.e. Nicole Byer!!! Dwl in my office and it is so worth it! If anyone asks me i'm gonna let them know!! YOU'RE GETTING A CLAM!!!!! HAHAHA #sassitup!!!!!!
"...I really felt like I was getting a clam!"
SNL also needs to get Nicole Byer, just saying, I love her on Girl Code.
Yaaaaasss, that would be absolute perfection.
I wish I was laughing because it was just a funny video. This is so real. The next time I hear "more urban" in an audition....

You must live some place where blacks are only seen on TV.
I wish I could say that was true. :/ My family are nomads... I've lived in nearly 20 different places in my life. This is literally so true on so many levels. People don't even understand how real this is. Hilarious in hindsight, but real.

lmao yeah because "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" is totally about dancing......
Not gonna lie, when I heard about the movie as a kid...I really did think it was about music & dancing. But when I watched it, I said: *"Wait a minute. This movie ain't about no damn dancing. This movie is about fucking!!"*
“I really thought I was getting a clam” 😂😂
WHAT OTHER ITEMS WERE ON THAT LIST?! I NEED TO KNOW.
this shit is so true. And white ppl say be more "urban" and black people say "stop being an oreo"....can i just live.
