"Having no ability to be my authentic self in that moment and that's so heartbreaking to me and I mourn for those moments" the man I have never heard somebody Express this idea coherently but that is exactly how I feel so often
Really interesting to hear him talk through his ADHD diagnosis. However, listening to Ed be mid-thought and constantly getting interrupted and then the subject change before he can finish what he was going to say drove me INSANE! Let the man speak!
So much of what Ed describes in his adhd is similar to my adhd presentation. A creative career is so appealing because you’re using the same skills but every job is different! Needing that novelty to stimulate the brain really pushes neurodivergent folks towards “gig” careers.
I met Ed Helms once while he was shooting for the Daily Show, between takes I introduced myself and he was very kind even though he was working. Class act.
If you’re listening and thinking “bro this is just life. Get over it.”, that’s a very reasonable reaction. Most ADHD symptoms present very similarly to common mental hurdles with one caveat. It isn’t learned. It is a hard wired issue (excess post-synaptic dopamine active transporters). The severity of these relatable sounding issues is generally orders of magnitude worse to the point that it’s debilitating.
A bad therapist (or bad therapy) actually is quite dangerous to mental health. It isn't "better than nothing". It's important to research a therapist before trying them and also okay to change therapists if it's not a good fit.
Neal how is it that every one of these shows is AMAZING?! And how is it that I learn something new from each one? I had never heard of time blindness until Ed brought it up and I recognized myself immediately! I am nearly sixty and have a great memory for concepts, ideas, text, narrative, and quotes. But if I am asked what year something happened in my life I have to work forward or backwards from a few key dates in my timeline. I thought it was just me. Thanks so much! I am going to look into this because it happens to me all the time.
It’s such a great thing hearing him talk about his ADHD struggles as I too am late diagnosed with both my ADHD and my autism at 25 and 26 years old, I relate a lot to the not understanding so much about the world due to ADHD and I did not even realise I didn’t know some stuff until I started getting medicated (which I think is what Ed means as the next part of the journey after diagnosis because with each diagnosis I’ve felt the same short lived sense of relief and understanding that was followed by a lot of overwhelming searching for understanding on top of the struggles to find the right dose for me). (btw since in the few random episodes I’ve listened to/watched the term Asperger’s has been mentioned a fair bit and it’s not a diagnostic term anymore, it all fits under the umbrella term of autism spectrum disorders and with the somewhat recent understanding that Hans Asperger was working with or essentially was a nazi among many other factors we typically don’t like to use the term Asperger’s nowadays, but just to be extra clear I understand not being up to date on this stuff since it was only 2013 that the term Asperger’s stopped being a thing and I hold no ill will for using it without this knowledge and only hold ill will for people who still identify with the term due to internalised ableism and just wanted to pass this on in case anyone of Neal’s team reads this random comment.)
In the grand scheme of things mid 20s is still pretty early homie! I've been connecting the dots since my mid 30s but haven't gotten diagnosed because it feels like the process of doing so would be painful 😅
The part where he talks about his mom and the ukulele nearly made me cry 🥲 I’ve always said you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Never stop learning and growing!
In programming, there's something called "Rubber Duck Debugging" - which means you have a little rubber ducky on your desk, and when you're stuck on a bug and need to get help from another developer, you first explain your problem in detail (exactly like you would another person) to your duck and during that process you realize what your problem is and you're able to fix it. What you're saying about therapists is the same idea, you just need to be able to hear yourself explain the problem to another person for you to understand it yourself.
When Ed talked about his ADHD and talked about doing the thing he needs to do to help it...That he hasn't gotten to yet. When Neil goes Well you have ADHD so makes sense 🤣🤣🤣 That was an awesome settle joke 😂
Oh my god, so it might have been Neal's idea for that end credits cookie after THE GOODS that rhythmically loops those couple lines about 'Querque and sets it to music. "You don't wanna know what happened in 'Querque. Actually, I do." Awesome.
