How is it that the Philippines, a vital United States ally in so many strategic ways and still remains a vital strategic link in the defensive arc of southeast Asia is not one of the 39 countries listed in the United States visa waiver program? While Chinese citizens can visit U.S. territory like Guam (which is one of seven US territories) without a visa?!?! But yet Filipino’s are required to obtain a visa just to visit the United States! The Philippines fought next to us during the Korean War. The Philippines was lvital strategic partner during the Vietnam war. It’s past time for us to add the Philippines to the United States visa waiver program!!
I can't help but wonder where this prosperous country is now? The Philippines, once only second to Japan in the whole Asia, is now one of the poorest and most troubled.
Overly leveraged against foreign debt over the decades, under corrupt governments and an OUT OF CONTROL population growth (now about 105 million at home; and several million abroad), natural disasters (i.e., global warming) -- all turning--as you said, a "once prosperous" country into a "debtor" nation.
The Philippines is far better during the American period compared what it is now, we are poor, less charismatic and lagging behind among the neighboring Asian countries.
Btw, when it says Japan bombed the "open city of Manila", that means there were no military troops or targets in it. They were solely bombing civilians. The US and Philippines military at the time had moved all their soldiers out of the city so it would be spared bombardment and relayed this to the Japanese. They still did bombing runs on it 5 days later.
I saw the Philippine map in this video presentation. Unfortunately, the Visayan Island is not accurately drawn or depicted. Need I remind you that Philippines is not Manila or NCR.
