Some nice insights into some useful items. Just a couple more thoughts on the HD issue to add to that which has already been shared. Is it software or hardware - Does it actually turn on? Can you hear or feel the vibration to indicate it powers up? Internal diodes act as fuses. If it powers up is it recognized but files cannot be accessed? Clicking sounds when trying to access indicate disk issues. There are many data retrieval programs and some that are free to download & try. What unit transferred the files ... your new MAC or another ... possible software driver issues? Best practice for critical data is buy 2 drives ... backup for the backup with occasional drive access checks. With a little research & tinkering you may be able to save your files & money. Motivation ... would you pay yourself $1200 to do it? That would be the net personal financial accounting effect.
Western Digital is the hard drive. If it's a portable hard drive, you can take it out from the case and replace it with a new case and sometimes that fixes the issue. That's how I recovered my hard drive. Or you can use a software called File Scavenger that recovers files. If the software can recognize the drive you can still recover by copying your files to another hard drive. Data Recovery companies like to charge you an arm an leg for this. If you have knowledge in this you can do it yourself.
