Wow, a slow, sad, painful song in an Ace Combat game? I loved this piece, not only because of the stoic and somber quality. But, also because I got to flex and talk about the human sound in choral music. Beautifully done, per usual with these ace combat songs. Main composers: Keiki Kobayashi, Testukazu Nakanishi, Hiroshi Okubo, Junichi Nakatsuru and Ryuchi Takada.

Ace Combat, I think more than any other game series, has always been very good at carrying an anti-war message. Not as much in 7 necessarily, but it’s definitely noticeable in Zero, 6, and especially 5.

@@ls93780 I'd say Zero did it best, specifically the Hoffnung raid and Stage of Apocalypse missions. 7 is hit and miss when it comes to story, but Last Hope (Anchorage night) and Homeward (Tyler Island) put a spin on it with the information blackout causing multiple blue on blue as well as giving the more radical elements excuse to commit fratricide. Ahh yes, one of my favorite ace combat missions! The context behind this mission is actually incredibly sad. The estovakians (the bad guys) had basically completely lost the war vs emmeria (the good guys) so they re activated a super weapon (chandelier that was built to attempt to shoot down the asteroid Ulysses) to try and basically nuke the capital city of gracemeria. The final bits of the estovakian army and the strigon team all fell there and it pretty much ended the estovakian army for good. The chandelier was a last ditch effort for the estovakians to do as much damage as possible before their army completely fell. And it was also a last ditch effort to stop Ulysses, but unfortunately it didn't work either time and did nothing but cause irreparable damage to estovakia and it's people.

And even sadder when as you the player (hero) are tasked with making sure that WMD isn't used, crushing their final hope in order to liberate your own home. I'm happy you took the time to dive deep in Chandelier. To paint a brief description of the context for this piece, this is played in the last mission of Ace Combat 6. Your enemies, having lost their war, have resorted to indiscriminate bombing of your city using the weapon Chandelier, just so they can inflict the most pain upon you and your countrymen. You struggle to destroy targets, knowing that for each second passing, for each time you hear the words "Prepare Stauros for launch" and the countdown of the Chandelier, hundreds in the capital city die. The Chandelier is described in radio messages by your enemies as their final cry of defiance, a supposed weapon if salvation but turned out to be nothing more than a white elephant, but both them and you know Chandelier's bombing of the capital city of Gracemeria is worth nothing. Your enemeies killing civilians in the capital city won't change the outcome of the war, it won't suddenly grant them victory. That is why even if great sacrifices must be made, you'll have to destroy Chandelier.

I love this mission because it’s so unique amongst Ace Combat final missions. Usually you’d have an epic heroic battle with the player character and his buddies at the center, but in AC6, you already had that in Liberation of Gracemeria. So for Chandelier, the enemy are the protagonists, and the focus are their last desperate efforts to cause as much destruction as possible before being wiped out. The atmosphere in this mission, with the vicious battle, the endless snow, the imposing silhouette of the Chandelier, and the grim voice lines of the enemy personnel, is incredible and unique in Ace Combat. I do like the irony in that the lyrics are kind of hopeful but the way they are sung is so chilling. For these Estovakians there will be no morning light.
Btw when you said it was Megalith Agnus Dei, it’s actually the main theme of AC6, which you can hear in Liberation of Gracemeria. Same melody but it’s like the meaning is flipped on its head.
Glad you’re also giving attention to the slower songs in Ace Combat. The soundtrack is most famous for its grand and epic pieces, but honestly it’s got such incredible quality all across the board of emotional ranges. Someone already recommended Mrs Krista Yoslav forma Ace Combat Assault Horizon. I’d like to call attention to Shall Defend, from the same game. It’s actually on the more epic side of Ace Combat music, but I like how it mixes some emotionality into it.

The lyrics of the song, written by Kobayashi himself and sung by the Trinity Boys Choir, concern the aftermath of the Ulysses 1994XF04 disaster(an asteroid who's crashing affected the Ace Combat world and basically started everything) and the ensuing Emmeria-Estovakia War, and the narrator's willingess to endure and move on. The name "Chandelier" is also the name of a giant anti-asteroid superweapon the Estovakians try to use to destroy the country of Emmeria even after they lose the war.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 Год назад +11

It's also significant in that the Chandelier was canonically the LAST anti Ulysses 1994XF04 project to be turned into a weapon. Nearly every super weapon in Ace Combat, from Stonehenge, though Megalith to Excalibur and even the Ark Bird were all originally tools of salvation, proposed or canceled when they couldn't be finished in time. Only Stonehenge ever served it's intended role... which wasn't to save the world, just to save the continent it was built on. In a fascinating way, only Stonehenge earned a redemption (in AC 7) of all these massive projects.
The thematic point of Chandelier was to tell the players "That old story, of the tragic aftermath of Ulysses? This is the end of it. From here we move on." (Towards AC 3...)

Snow and ice covers the ground as you, along with your wingman Garunda 2, Windhover, Skykid and Avalanche squadrons approach the Chandelier project site.
A young woman's voice, clearly a civilian, cuts in on your frequency, begging you pilots to listen to her. She has gained access to intel about the battery you are about to assault from a Estovakian top brass who has had a change of heart.
The Estovakians scramble what few remaining fighters they have: the remnant of the Ace squadron you first faced in the initial defense of Gracemeria, and whos leader you had a frantic dogfight with after liberating Gracemera.
The whine of your jet engine is almost drowning out the young woman on the radio but you can make out her telling your and yours that the battery in nearly impervious to direct damage, but hitting the massive cooling units should make the battery collapse from the heat build-up
You hear enemy personnel cutting through the comchatter in a flat tone:
    "Prepare Stauros for launch".
The Estovakians have started the loading sequence for Chandelier, and you know for certain that for every shot that cannon fires a lot of innocent people in Gracemeria will die.
You hit the throttle and prepare for one final dance with the angels in this war.

  • @Mobius__
    @Mobius__ Год назад +13

As some have said, Chandelier does feel like it's from the Estovakian perspective. Specifically them hoping for a better future after years of turmoil.
Dialogue from that mission that has stuck with me is members of Strigon Team (Estovakian ace squadron) talking to each other.
    - "Chico, he said, make it back alive."
    - "Milos, the fight is what keeps me alive. I've devoted my entire being to fighting for a better future."
A third member in that same mission says:
    - "How far do the Emmerians intend to go with the humiliation of our country?"
The Estovakians really suffered in the years leading up to the events of Ace Combat 6, so it really feels like Chandelier is the Estovakian army remnants trying to hold on to what little honor they feel they have left after losing the war, a war meant to pull their country out of extreme poverty after years of civil war.

Chandelier is an extremely interesting song. For one, it's played in the last mission.
Your flying in to stop the huge, super weapon like in every other AC game. But instead of something like Zero or The Unsung War to spur you on, you get this.
Instead of being the pilot fighting here, it's like your a citizen witnessing the end of your city as it's struck by this super weapon. All you can do is pray and hope this will all end soon.
I played to a friend of mine without context of the mission itself, and he said it sounded like the prologue to nuclear war. As though the world was being buried under ashes and rubble.

The antagonist nation, though having defeated, continued to launch cruise missiles at the player's capital with a freaking RAILGUN that was designed to destroy an asteroid. The song may sound serene, but the mission is anything but that. Ah the "Ulysses Disaster of July 1999", that fell upon "Strangereal". The Continents of "Anea" & "Usea" suffered & endured 2 weeks of pure hell. The Nations that suffered the worst of the Ulysses: Erusea (Usean Continent - West) & Estovakia (Anea Continent - East). The "snow without end" in the song does repressnt death, but also an alegory to the "falling Ulysses asteroids" that rained down upon the Earth. Chandelier is indeed a beautiful/haunting song to listen to.

This hits way harder when you watch the gameplay, or even better, play the mission by yourself. The mission is to destroy the behemoth super weapon that the enemy would use to bombard our capital. Listening to this raw, soft children acapella choir kicks in between the flying munitions, smokes, and explosions all around us, voices from our aircraft electronic systems and radio chatters talking about the chaos of the battle as it heatens up, plus the super weapon fires in every minute straight to our capital city, makes the whole situation despite the hell let loose all around us, strangely sorrowful, but eerie at the same time.
That is one of the best mission maybe in the history of the game, at least for me, because of this strange but unique feeling it left for me after experiencing it, it's still haunting me until now.
Thank you for reacting to this soundtrack, and merry christmas, Marco.

It’s very good of you to mention chandelier and speak highly of it. You know, after all, ace combat 6 only sold 700 thousand copies, hitting the lowest record of any mainline entry in the ace combat series.
What’s more, the series moved to the real world in the next game and Hiroyuki Ichiyanagi(一柳宏之), the producer who had taken lead of ace combat series since ace combat 4, worked so hard in the next game that the hard work ended up ruining his body. He quit the project at the beginning of the development and finally left Bandai-Namco in 2012. So in short, chandelier marks both the end of strange real world and ace combat old times, in many ways.
But no need to be desperate, for almost 10 years later in 2016 trailer, the first ace combat 7 trailer with ace combat 7 originated music, here came the faceless soldier. When the guitar kicks in, you know you are going to do something big, something that makes the dying franchise reborn. And it should be noticed that the faceless soldier version of ace combat 7’s leitmotif also appears at the end of ace combat 7’s credits. Chills

Whenever I play Chandelier (the mission), I turn the the sound effects down and halve the dialogue volume so they're hovering just above background level.
This combination with Chandelier (the song) now in the foreground makes it feel as though at once you're participating in the battle, observing from a detached view, and reflecting on the situation from the perspectives of everyone you've fought alongside or against the whole game. I dunno it's hard to put into words.

The tragic thing about the setting is how all the world was forced to react to the Ulysses asteroids that impacted the earth. Virtually all the major superweapons you end up fighting were originally created to safeguard the specific regions from the asteroids impacts. The Chandelier super gun is no exception. In a meta sense they all make for great bosses right? Yeah, gameplay excuse. But there's also a narrative excuse. Generally speaking these are last resorts. For me, even as a little kid, that resonated. There is hope for peace. Even the true bad guys didn't rush to use these things right away.
Anyway, it's a sad mission. Last stand for the Estovakians. Last of their elite squadron is there fighting you. Ragtag ships from their navy defending the cannon. Doesn't matter. IIRC all they care about is destroying Gracemaria, the city you liberated with that banger of a song.
Best thing about this channel by far is that you were introduced to AC music. Trust me, so many more amazing tracks out there from this series.

(Of course it's a lot harder to catch with the constant thrum of the engines behind you, missile warnings, and "Stauros, preparing for launch".) But even something small like that, that kind of stuff is just one of many reasons why I love Ace Combat!
I know Keiki Kobayashi gets a lot of credit for AC music, and rightfully so. Every accolade and then some is very much deserved. But knowing how complex modern musical composition can be I just know there are others that deserve to share in the accolades and commendations that AC music deserves.

The story of Estovakia is such a tragic tale. They were a struggling nation when the Ulysses asteroid was discovered. Other nations making their weapons could only blanket so far and often Estovakia was left out of that. They created their own superweapon out of desperation with bad parts and bad engineering and it failed leaving the nation on its knees while their next door neighbor Emmeria was able to be protected by everyone else. After the Ulysses event Emmeria and others sent aid but a radical part of the government ambushed the convoys and stole all the aid for themselves but framed Emmeria, it also left the rest of the government powerless when this group started a coup. They filled the remaining citizens with hatred for Emmeria leading up to the invasion. The game starts with this and a lot of the dialogue and cutscenes is watching Estovakia forces realize this was all wrong except for that radical faction who retreat back to Chandelier to wipe out Emmeria and at the same time ritually sacrifice themselves in the process.
Game about fighter jets with some of the best music and best story. Who would have thought lol.

The Estovakian history is actually even worse. After the Ulysses Estovakia the government while remaing in power lost any type of control over the country and military factions took over varius regions (this blocked Estovakia to join the Republic of Anea which was compleatly scrapped because Estovakia absence) later foregin nations such as Osea and Emmeria sanctioned Estovakia because of corruption between the government and later a certain General Lyes made a coup d'etat and deposed the government however the country was still split between military factions, Emmeria made deals with Lyes in order to continue providing aid to the population and rebuild Estovakia infrastrutures. Later the City of Gledina which was relay on Emmerian's humanitarian aid opposed Lyes military rule and the city was blockaded leading to another humanitarian crisis and the death of more of 200.000 people, this event sparked the start of the civil war as other military factions start an armed opposition against Lyes regime in responce. The six years civil war was extremely bloody one ace back story mention his hometown being leveled to the ground after an extensive bombing campaign that he took part as well. the Eastern Faction lead by General Gustav Dvornik won at the end and reunified Estovakia and instaurate a new military regime, but despite the civil war was over the ramants of Lyes simpatazers continued skermishes and terrorist acts the "Vistoc Incident " where in the city near the Estovakian-Emmerian border they raided a facility were Emmerian humanitarian aid were stored and killed the ONG workers inside and some Emmerian soldier guarding the place and also ambushed the Estovakian Prime Minister on his way to Gracemeria in order to discuss the riconstrution program with the Emmeria the prime Minister survived but remained in a comatose state (this is actually debated in the lore itself because the Prime Minister wasn't a popular figure in the goverment as during the war he was initially a member of another factions and despite being Dvornik best friend is debated that the assasination attempt was ordered by the Estovakian government) another economic crisis ensues (there's the side note about lot of money being spent on the CFA-44 and the press dubbing it as Notferatu because it was "sucking public money out of the Estovakians pokets" and this journalists made disappearing by the regime) and then there's an official meeting between the Emmerian Ambassador and the New Estovakian Foregin Minister in which she blames Emmeria for be partially resposible for the civil war since Emmeria had unintentionally backed Lyes for the first 4 years of the civil prolonging the Estovakians suffering. Then the Supreme Commander of the army made a speech about restoring Estovakian pride on their own after the news about the death of the former prime minister was realesed to the public (which died long ago before the news was realesed) and then the declaration of war with Emmeria the following year

It's no coincidence the second part of the song uses melody from "A Brand New Day". The part at 6:38 plays during the second half of the mission after your wingman, Shamrock, crashes and is presumed dead, trying to prevent Chandelier from firing and discovering its weak point that you, the player, must then destroy by flying down the barrel of the railgun (yes, for real). Until that moment, the first part with lyrics loops through the mission as you prevent Chandelier from destroying Gracemeria.
Thanks for giving a listen to this track. You could also maybe give "Lost Kingdom" from AC7 a listen. As repetitive as it may sound, it actually carries a deep subtext.

7:05 as others have already pointed out, that’s the AC6’s main theme (the one used in Liberation of Gracemeria) and not Megalith Agnus dei.
AC6 has two leitmotifs that repeatedly show up in its soundtrack, both of which are in this track. the first is that Liberation of Gracemeria one, which I associate with the Emmerians. The second is the Chandelier one, which I associate with Estovakia.
(The very short 2 minute track titled ‘The Wartime Evacuation’ also has both themes)
Taking the hopeful and motivating Emmerian theme and having it sung in the way Chandelier has it it feels like Emmeria is also suffering alongside Estovakia, the war affected mostly everyone in both countries after all. It could also be that Emmeria is understanding of Estovakia’s pain through empathy.
