Buenas Noches Sr Jonathan .
Thank you for inviting Jonathan to your channel. I have been listening to Dreaming Spanish videos for the past 10 months. My comprehension has increased dramatically just by listening and listening. Jonathan's experience is exactly how the creator explains the acquiring process. This was a huge motivator for me. High five to both of you!
This is something I've been trying to figure out about LingQ as well as Dreaming Spanish before I throw anymore money at it. Are you really learning Spanish simply by listening to it? I don't see how. In life you have people who can push and pull you, slap your hand as they say no, say words to you as they put food in your mouth, and make the whole thing a 3D experience that integrates all of life with the sound of words. But can you get that immersive experience from a computer screen? Do you think you're on your way to speaking Spanish simply by hearing it spoken? If you know of any language forums where this topic is under discussion, I'd certainly appreciate your heading me in that direction.
By the way, Pablo just interviewed Johnathan about a week ago. His speaking abilities have improved tremendously from his interview with Mike Ben. ruclips.net/video/5Y0ChbKD3eo/видео.html

Thank you for making this video, and for telling the world about "comprehensible input". I found this method in January this year, after using first Babbel, and then at the same time Duolingo. I could not listen and understand anything, not even the easiest listening exercises on the apps. I gave up, but found this method, and gave it a go.
Enjoyed the watch thanks for the video! After my trip to Europe this year, I would say people in Barcelona were much more friendly and welcoming than in London, I think it's because it's a much bigger city and always packed with tourists. I had a couple bad experiences in London and only good ones in Spain
Mike, thank you very much for having Jonathan on your channel! You are both inspirations for me as I learn Spanish. "Studying" Spanish was kryptonite for me, not to mention incredibly frustrating and demoralizing, but following the comprehensible input approach has been truly life changing. I've done about 750 hours of CI, starting with Dreaming Spanish, my comprehension is good and I'm just trusting that more listening will sort out my speaking ability. So, thanks for bringing this approach to your audience.
@@royr8982 @Roy R , who me? Happy to share. Basically, I'm doing what Pablo from Dreaming Spanish suggests: getting massive input through listening. I started with his super-beginner video series, then beginner, then intermediate, then Peppa Pig, then his advanced playlist on RUclips. Though I haven't watched too many of his private advanced videos as I shifted to content I'm more interested in on RUclips or Netflix. For me, that's cooking videos, nature documentaries, low-brow TV shows/movies that I've seen before. This method isn't to everyone's taste, but if you like to lounge on the couch watching TV and are repulsed by the idea of studying, it's probably a good fit. I think you also have to be patient with speaking. For me, my comprehension is WAY ahead of my speaking and I find that a little frustrating but I'm confident enough that the process will work that I don't let myself get worked up about it. Plus, now I'm almost at 1,000 hours of input so I'm going to start reading and I think that will make a huge difference too. Perhaps this was more than you wanted, but I'm excited to share what's working for me, in part because I've met so many people who think they "can't" learn languages. I was one of them. I now know that's total BS. All the best on your language learning journey! We can do it! Here's the playlist that covers how Pablo suggests learning a language: ruclips.net/p/PLlpPf-YgbU7GrtxQ9yde-J2tfxJDvReNf
Hi Mike, I salute you. Just started following you and subscribed. Thanks for the inspiration and keeping it real and authentic- Been using Dreaming Spanish and can tell it does help- after all and as the debate goes "how did we learn our native tongue- by listening" makes sense to me. I am getting your book- that too can be a great resource to have in my toolkit. Thanks again John
Understandable frustration, not everyone is a beginner so come back in a few months and it will be very fulfilling to see your improvement. You’ll understand a lot more. The subtitles get distracting, I know from first hand experience.
So I definitely would say I agree with this comment. There’s a lot of videos before which I didn’t understand but now can so it’s very cool to see and hear the videos I couldn’t understand before!
The internet is already crammed with English videos pretending to teach Spanish. If you really want to learn Spanish, you have to immerse yourself in it. Starting with this kind of video is probably not the best. Peppa Pig is fully translated in Spanish and can be understood with zero prior knowledge. It takes a certain amount of humility to learn a foreign language because you have to start by watching things that are embarrassingly childish to get a foundation.
Friend, I promise you, listening works! I've done about 750 hours of comprehensible input so far and I am amazed at what I can understand. My speaking still sucks, but the whole thing is heading in the right direction. I started with the super-beginner videos on Dreaming Spanish. All the best to you on your Spanish learning journey!
This is the first video that im struggling to keep up with mike 😲 You're flowing so smooth brother! Ill get there one day ha! Anyway much love from Australia
Gracias hermano, as you already know, when you come back to this video the next time you’ll be impressed with yourself in terms of how much your listening skills have improved! 🇦🇺

For these conversations it just wouldn’t be feasible with the limited time that I have. With that said, I completely understand your frustration. Some videos are beginner friendly and I would say that others you should use as a gauge of your Spanish listening skills. Come back to this video in a few months and I guarantee you’ll be shocked at how much your listening skills have improved. I’ve experienced this first hand and others have mentioned the same. Espero que te ayude!
Is this daily?I can remember when I started after visiting Tenerife in November 2018 that first week I was listening to the news for 5-6 hours daily and my mind was proper exhausted. It felt like there was a wall to be broken through. Now I can listen and not feel like I'm climbing a mountain. Shouldn't have dropped for French only to start it back again. Am starting by listening this time using a series from Spain called,"Service y Proteger". It has over a thousand one-hour plus episodes. After getting to 100hours of watching/listening; I then plan on using Teach Yourself Spanish; Assimil, Spanish Uncovered and finally BaseLang to really get going from a conversation point of view. Perhaps I might also take an exam to measure my progress but will see
Excellent video...It would be great if he could expand more on his language learning method. Did he use subtitles with Dreaming Spanish/Espanol con Juan? Did he read independently also? Did he do any grammar exercises? You guys help me stay motivated!
Im glad this helps & from what it looks like he simply used listening to comprehensible input as his study method for 6 months, nothing more than that during that time period!
But how many hours a day did he do? I’m currently going through the superbeginner videos on DS, currently doing an hour a day and playing breath of the wild in Spanish. Is that long enough or should I do more?
I love this conversation, I feel like I understand a lot of what you guys are saying. I was wondering if you any good podcast with similar format? Preferably Afro Hispanic
I know it would be a lot of work but I would really appreciate if this was translated into English… I am just learning Espanol! Or maybe can you do a short video summarizing what he did and how many hours per day of listening… Etc.?
I definitely understand that but for many the subtitles in English are a distraction, and I know that from first hand experience. I would simply add videos like this to a playlist like “watch later” or “Spanish conversations” and then come back progressively to test how much your Spanish has improved. Many have said that they were frustrated at first because they couldn’t understand but they’ve come back to videos like this over time and have improved their ability to understand. Se puede utilizarlo como motivación!
Just go check out Dreaming Spanish’s method page. I’m on the same route Jonathan took, (I’m much slower of course), Duolingo first, then discovered Dreaming Spanish. If you tell me a yea ago that I would understand this video completely in Spanish, I would NOT believe you. So, just listen, listen, listen!!! Comprehensible Input works!
@@RoxanneJ Hi Roxanne! Here's a way to "digest" the video: #1 Yes, slow it down #2 Use the Spanish subtitles #3 Do chunks, like 10 minutes of video a day. --- Plus you can take notes of new words, expressions, etc., along the way. And yes, it'll be lots of work but in IMHO very rewarding. Happy Spanish learning!
It seems like a really interesting method. He soley listened to spanish for months and then was able to speak this well? It feels like a scary prospective to put in so much time to listening and then what if you were not able to achieve these results? Has anyone else had close to similar experience of Jonathan? Would be great to see more examples of this!
The dreaming Spanish method has a lot of other testimonials similar to Jonathan's. My personal learning style required a little bit more active studying to keep me motivated but as you can see, Jonathan's method works well.
I understand the frustration, I’d recommend coming back to this video in a few months. You’ll be shocked with your improvements. I try to mix the videos up between those that are beginner friendly and those that will help the intermediate learners as well. Entiendo por completo aun.
I understand but I'd recommend coming back to these videos in a few months when your Spanish has improved some. You'll be very impressed with your progress in your ability to understand. I try to make a mix of videos seeing that everyone isn't a beginner nor advanced. Entiendo por completo.
Where can we find his video on how he learned. I want to hear the English version. I am just now getting serious about my Spanish and want to see his perspective in English..
Alguna vez has pensado o has sino invitado a una iglesia hispanohablante?
Yes Mike that would be quite good for you. I know the girls from Hermosas Chicas Negras mentioned that she does Bible Study in Spanish as part of a group and also prays in Spanish as well. I guess it's a good way of increasing your Spanish speaking time too and building/forming new relationships in the language
I get the frustration but these videos are meant for listening practice not necessarily to teach. Come back when your listening skills improve and you will impress yourself. I’ve experienced it first hand
Go to the Dreaming Spanish RUclips channel and start with the super-beginner playlist. Save this video and come back to it after a few hundred hours of listening and you'll understand! All the best to you! Listening works!
hey Mike, i watched your video on how to learn spanish and looking at the complexity of your spanish and how many hours were you spending learning spanish everyday during your 3-16 month stretch including listening to spanish passively? please help
Check out some of my other videos because I break all that down more specifically. I would go for an hour a day actively if you can. 30 minutes at least. The rest of the time can be passively. I have a few videos that break down my typical day and they can help you with this!
@@MikeBen i watched that video of your breakdown. from what i remember it was roughly 30 mins of study and then an hour or so of listening practice but listening to this interview about how he learned so quickly i feel like y’all had to be doing so much more listening. The people have to know hermano
the 8$ that you spend on dreaming Spanish webpage is the best investment for you if you are looking to learn Spanish because it's the best way, I can say it because it's the same way i have learned Hindi and English ( I am from Nepal), so from my own experience i can validate that this method is 1000% practical, the only thing you need is patience and consistency
Both can work, just depends on how long you’ve been learning. Early on I would listen with them, if you’ve been learning for more than 5 months I’d say try it without them
He used a website called dreaming Spanish. You essentially just listen to videos for 1500 hours to reach near fluent level. No grammar studies or anything. It starts out with super beginner and last is to advanced. The idea is the content will get harder over time whilst you progress.
Aplausos 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 The truth is, listening is THE way to learn a language, any language. Everyone knows that’s how kids do it, but we think only kids can do that. Languages were developed eons before they were written. Every single one. And, ugly as this sounds, the most effective ways to “teach” languages to populations has been through invading armies and slavery. Think of Alexander the Great, think of Rome, think of how English and Spanish were introduced in the Americas. I’m pretty sure the ideas about memorizing lists of words and and studying rules of grammar came from scholars attempting to learn to read the ancient languages. Meanwhile commoners had to learn to follow orders. I applaud you both for what you have been able to accomplish. 👏🏽😎👏🏽😎 My own achievements in reaching an advanced intermediate level are the result of more conventional study practices with the recent addition of trying to incorporate Pablo’s listening method. That’s a challenge because I have native Spanish speaking friends online that I can’t just drop. I’ll need to ask if they are willing to restructure our conversations to the crosstalk model. Whatever it takes, I WILL continue this journey. My Spanish isn’t bad at all ( well maybe pronunciation), but whatever it takes, it will improve!!!😊 And maybe what it will take is continuing to focus on actually hearing the language. Enhorabuena 🎉🎉🎉
Eso! This is very true and I agree, the true. True immersion and the circumstances that you mentioned are true ways that languages have been learned for thousands of years.
I understand the frustration but you will equally understand the frustration of having English subtitles once your Spanish listening comprehension improves. The intention here is to help you all improve your listening skills and that is very difficult with English subtitules distracting your brain. Try coming back to this as a mark of your improved listening skills in the future.
Im just listening and listening and of course I don’t understand anything right now but determined! Anybody want to translate the process or shall I come back in ten months once I understand?.
I understood absolutely nothing lol Since imma beginner But i think he got all this speaking skills just by listening I recommend sone English subs ,it would great Gracias mike
You will understand with time lol, I know that not having the subtitles is frustrating at this stage in your Spanish but I promise that they will be equally as frustrating when your Spanish listening skills improve. It will all make sense with time
Come back to this in a few months when your listening has improved. I promise you will be impressed with yourself. The audience is very diverse, different ability levels so it’s impossible to make every video targeted for beginners. I definitely get the frustration though.
I would strongly recommend to check out Dreaming Spanish’s method page. Jonathan followed that site’s method. Lots of listening with a silent period. I’m on the same track, if you tell me a year ago that I would understand this very video in Spanish, I would NOT believe you. But I indeed can understand everything Mike & Jonathan said without the help of subtitles. Dreaming Spanish has lots of videos made for “super beginner” and “beginner”. Give it a try!
He’s from England so he’s close to Spain. That’s why he speaks with a Spanish accent because he learned Spanish Spanish. Since Americans are close to Mexico/South America that’s why they speak more with a Mexican/South American Spanish accent

I know that feeling that you're describing and I love it as well. Super satisfying. Que sigas aprendiendo!

That's amazing!

How I love this language too! Enhorabuena 🥳 😊
Gracias Madison!
Waw!!

Enjoyed the watch thanks for the video! After my trip to Europe this year, I would say people in Barcelona were much more friendly and welcoming than in London, I think it's because it's a much bigger city and always packed with tourists. I had a couple bad experiences in London and only good ones in Spain
Thanks for that insight, I hadn't heard much about either in that regard but hearing this may lead me to visit Spain first then.
It’s a great approach to learning that I wish I was exposed to earlier on so I’m glad this helps!
Could you provide more details with what you’ve been doing ?
Here's the playlist that covers how Pablo suggests learning a language:

Hi Mike, I salute you. Just started following you and subscribed. Thanks for the inspiration and keeping it real and authentic- Been using Dreaming Spanish and can tell it does help- after all and as the debate goes "how did we learn our native tongue- by listening" makes sense to me. I am getting your book- that too can be a great resource to have in my toolkit. Thanks again John
I'm glad this helps John and please let me know your opinion of the book!
I could not be arsed listening to him so how did he do it
Arsed? I’m not following completely, can you rephrase this and I can respond a little better
This was great. Thanks guys

Pure genius!!
Let’s speak in a language that they don’t understand to tell them how to learn it.. Genius!!
Understandable frustration, not everyone is a beginner so come back in a few months and it will be very fulfilling to see your improvement. You’ll understand a lot more. The subtitles get distracting, I know from first hand experience. Espero que entiendas…
In that time I won’t need to learn the techniques to learn Spanish by listening will I.

Could you put an English translation of Convo on the screen? It would help. These are long convos for beginners
Espero que te ayude!
im about to up my listening to 10 hours after hearing what this guy said haha
😂
Perhaps I might also take an exam to measure my progress but will see
Bien dicho
Gracias Michael 🙏🏾

@@MikeBen gracias 🙏🏿✨
@@MikeBen oh ok! I’ll just slow it down and try to comprehend it! 😜😁😂 Estoy aprendiendo!
Is that all you do, is go to dreaming Spanish RUclips channel and start watching the beginner videos ?
It seems like a really interesting method. He soley listened to spanish for months and then was able to speak this well?
It feels like a scary prospective to put in so much time to listening and then what if you were not able to achieve these results? Has anyone else had close to similar experience of Jonathan? Would be great to see more examples of this!
The dreaming Spanish method has a lot of other testimonials similar to Jonathan's. My personal learning style required a little bit more active studying to keep me motivated but as you can see, Jonathan's method works well.
Is there a way to have this conversation translated? I’m a beginner, understood very little, and would really like to know his method.
I understand the frustration, I’d recommend coming back to this video in a few months. You’ll be shocked with your improvements. I try to mix the videos up between those that are beginner friendly and those that will help the intermediate learners as well. Entiendo por completo aun.
Very impressive ♥️

Mike it would have helped me to hear this in english because i still dont know what he did. Im just starting out.

If you’re trying to teach people, you should’ve spoke in English for those of us just starting out because i would’ve love to implement his method.

Are u supposed to read the subtitles while listening or just listening?
Both can work, just depends on how long you’ve been learning. Early on I would listen with them, if you’ve been learning for more than 5 months I’d say try it without them
Sorry, did Jonathan mention how many hours a day he was listening for?
He did not but I’m imagining 1 - 2 hours a day based on our private conversations.
How can I know what his method was if you guys are speaking in Spanish. I thought that he would explain his method in English
Come back to the video in a few months, you'll be impressed with your progress.
He used a website called dreaming Spanish. You essentially just listen to videos for 1500 hours to reach near fluent level. No grammar studies or anything. It starts out with super beginner and last is to advanced. The idea is the content will get harder over time whilst you progress.
Aplausos 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The truth is, listening is THE way to learn a language, any language.
My own achievements in reaching an advanced intermediate level are the result of more conventional study practices with the recent addition of trying to incorporate Pablo’s listening method.
C'mon, guys. Who is your audience? Spanish speakers or those who might want to learn it? For the latter group, closed captions in English would help.
Espero que entiendas…
@@MikeBen By which time (and I have my doubts as to that time’s arrival) the need for the motivation this might have imparted will have passed. 😞
Im just listening and listening and of course I don’t understand anything right now but determined! Anybody want to translate the process or shall I come back in ten months once I understand?.
Start with the super-beginner and beginner videos on the Dreaming Spanish channel. The more you listen, the more you will understand.
You should, use these videos as a measure of your improvement. You'll be shocked when you can understand 80% of this in a few months or next year.
