I became a confirmed football fan for life that night and a particular lover of night matches. What an atmosphere with 62,500 the official attendance. I was 12 years old watching the game from just behind the TV cameras at VP. When Pat McMahon scored the winner, the noise was incredible and I saw grown men crying at the final whistle. Twelve years later I was crying myself when Villa lifted the European Cup. It was this game though that cemented my love of the beautiful game.
I was 14 years old when at this game and had somehow lost Dad whilst on The Holte. The crush was amazing, almost one could take your feet off the ground and not fall down. I was about two thirds of the way up the stand to the right of the goal and I can still see Andy rising in my mind's eye. A bloke standing next to me put me on his shoulders as we celebrated. Now approaching 68 and loving every match. Up the Mighty Villa!
An interesting fact is that, although Villa were in the Third Division (their lowest point ever as a club), they were the most successful club in England, with more trophies in the cabinet than every team in the country - including the team they were facing. Funny old game, football!
Went to the first leg at Old Trafford but not the second. Villa played really well in both games and were deserved winners in a tie United were expected to win comfortably. If memory serves, Boro knocked us out of the FA Cup in a replay up at their place not long after. Three days after the Villa defeat, we went to Derby and drew 4-4 on a frozen pitch which turned out to be Wilf McGuinness's last game in charge. Sir Matt took over and we finished 8th. Probably higher than we'll finish this season.
Was at both these games, unbelievable atmosphere and both were crackin games,My side won so l was happy. We went on to lose unluckily to Tottenham at Wembley,in another great game
gerald hitchens 10 days after this my team Boro knocked Man United out of the FA Cup on a freezing cold night at Ayresome Park. A double whammy and Soon after George Best went AWOL in Spain.
Villa were unlucky in the final, I was there and the Villa fans were great. Villa outplayed us and outsang us but we had Chiv who was on top of his game.
me too george,,i was 11,,stood in the witton end amongst the man utd fans with my dad and uncles,,great memories of villa park,,massive crowds, great atmosphere, happy days
@Paul Morris 3rd division,2nd division to 1st division eventually, didnt make a difference to the size of crowds at villa park, and to the true fans of the club nobody really cared what division it was, proper fan base proper club
What a great night/win for Villa, then of the (old) Third Division, v the likes of Best, Charlton, Law et al. Proof that the underdogs can still rise to the occasion & pull of a shock result, though I think Villa were worthy winners on this occasion
Fond memories of Pat, I think he was signed from Celtic by Tommy Docherty. That was in July, 1969,...he played 130 games and scored 25 goals for Villa.
It's great to see my uncle Andy scoring 👏👏👏👏
RIP Andy lockhead my first villa hero
Andy , Andy lockhead ,Andy lockhead in the air
He had a pub in Clivinger in burnley for years , he was a burnley legend too .must of had a thing for claret and blue
I was there in the Witton End. There was a crowd of over 58000 attending.

1:23 Chico doing a drag back on the great George Best who would have been proud of that one himself.
The first time Best had seen it.

There was nothing wrong with that disallowed goal by Lochhead.
My father is Pat McMahon
Fond memories of Pat, I think he was signed from Celtic by Tommy Docherty.

I’m from Croy, in Scotland, same as your dad. I was good pals with your uncle John, your dad is still spoken about with pride and fondness!
Big Andy Lochhead...similar mould to Fred Pickering and Frank Large
Lochhead was a brave and fearsome striker.
I remember watching the 2nd leg on tv at the time
3 Semifinal defeats for The Unlucky Wilf McGuinness...was at The Old Trafford game...a 1-4 Crash to Manchester city a few days before was a bad omen.
See they invented colour TV in time for the 2nd leg
ITV colour strike. They already had colour TV by the end of the 60s
