This giant slab desk was made from one of the most underrated and beautiful wood species in all of North America. Clients often want walnut (understandably), but this client thought a little outside the box and we were able to find a gorgeous piece of locally salvaged wood from a very small sawmill (like just a guy and a chainsaw small). Oh, and I've added chapters to the video, so feel free to skip around as much as you want.

ehhh CamHave been following you for a while and love your work . Awesome to see a craftsman at work. But... do you realize you've got an audience outside the US? What if I would win your rifle/ or what ever you want to call it.. would you and your sponsors send it pout to The Netherlands?
On another noteCam; Do love your Troll of the week and your response!!! Please don't loose this feature on your channel I love it and it shows your sense of humour!
Exactly 70% of my audience is outside North America! So I’m very aware. I’m working on those details now, but yes. I want to find a way to include everyone, worldwide. At the very minimum I’d be happy to give my video consultation to anyone across the world instead of the physical prize. Which I’m sure would be disappointing to some, but it’s something!
@@BlacktailStudio I don't even have a shop but like your ideas and style , gives me ideas on how to renovate my house. Like your Shou Sugi Sculpted Table... Would love to have that as a a wall in my bathroom behind the toilet. Picture it a wall like this and a floating toilet. AWESOME!!!!
@@BlacktailStudio I'm in Australia and if there was an awesome prize (like a large tablesaw etcfor instance) I'd gladly help with the shipping! Some things are obviously not possible but anything is a bonus coming from this legend!
Yeah, I’m in Sweden. But imagine to get one of the awesome mallets 🤩. I’d happily pay for postage.
The planner, another great looking table.
I don't do woodworking and never had an interest in it. I don't even know why your videos were suggested to me by RUclips. But, I am so glad I watched the first one. I am totally hooked and learn so much from watching. Whether I will be able to use that knowledge for woodworking, may never happen. Don't let the negative Nancy's bother you! People are so brave over the internet and say things they'd never say in person. I value the time and work you put into the videos and things you make as I'm sure most here do, otherwise they wouldn't be subscribed. Good luck on 1,000,000 subs, I will be here to witness it!
Why do i relate to this so hard
AGREE 💯
Same
Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior God bless
I am not the one he's talking about.
1:34 Hi I'm Bob and I like to make stuff, and you have just crushed my modeling dreams
LMAO:)
We can rebrand you too Bob. Maybe Robbie?
That comment needs way more up-votes.
HA HA HA! Too funny.
lol
I like the part where you mention how it still takes someone as accomplished as yourself a good amount of time to do it, and not to compare yourself to others or feel bad for working at your own pace. Great work!
Saw
Speaking only for myself and being an amateur wood worker and lover of all things wood, I love your running commentary. I like hearing your opinions about methods. I do not like having to guess why you do what you do. Keep on keeping on and I will keep watching.
I agree, the running commentary is awesome and provides a lot of insight in to the project.
I also agree :)
I'm actually surprised at people complaining about how you do your projects. Are they getting $6500 to do a slab table? I find it very interesting how you do your work. What you do and how you do it obviously works for your customers.
At roughly 1 million subs... don't think he really cares.
Ya, if people don’t complain unless it’s a popular video
Hey if they didn't complain, we wouldn't get "troll of the week"!
Honestly people that are complaining just don’t know what they are talking about. This guy is leading the industry in epoxy furniture. His work is very clean, efficient and beautiful and all his furniture seems like it’s extremely high quality. This stuff isn’t easy. Especially when you have thousands of dollars on the line.
@@BlacktailStudio that means you're attracting more people. With more people brings more opinions. Doing great work. Kudos
Ignore all those fools, there is nothing wrong with being a little immature, keeps life interesting!
Why bother growing up all the way when being a kid is so much fun?
You're absolutely right there was nothing at all wrong with that video, guess what 50% of the human community has a similar void and 50% doesn't what is the mystery or embarrassment, everyone knows there is a difference get over it, be a kid look at life as a mystery and have fun. Growing up and having too much self sanctity is boring.
Sounds like those people are the immature ones if they can't handle a reference to anatomy. They must recoil in horror when they see a lot of art.. but something tells me they probably don't look at much to begin with.. these tables are art, keep up the good work.
@@dtb7872 There also the ones that are in secret surfing way worse sites on the internet but like to comment on such thing piously to sound superior.
@@dtb7872 Some people have zero sense of humor.
You are completely HILARIOUS! I would probably watch you build a bookshelf out of pallets and cinder block, just to listen to the commentary.
I stopped for the epoxy tips…I stayed for the commentary and honesty. You don’t talk too much. All the comments on minor mistakes and some issues, are the best part of the videos.
The Wood products are amazing too.
“Hey this Cam, from BlackTail Studios. Today I’m going to make a desk that’ll trigger my entire audience equally”
Keep it up, love your work.
7:04/ 7:05 🤣 THANK YOU!!! for being yourself, having a great sense of humor, honesty & sharing your knowledge!! It’s beautiful! ( I always watch start to finish, I don’t want to miss anything!)
OMG! I totally missed that the first time through!😁
I really love the edges with a live edge/straight edge mix. Seeing this, I now think that mixing the two may be the most attractive way to do either. I really like how the finished feel is a blend of rustic and modern. Such a clean, beautiful look.
I appreciate your commentary and how you explain the process of what you are doing. I also must admit to liking your childish sense of humor, don't stop. Great work, I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you for addressing the trolls and overly opinionated viewers. They shouldn't have power over your style and products, especially since they aren't actually buying your products. Personally, you are inspiring me to think about wood work at a completely different angle, and once I'm done with med school, I plan on making furniture for my own home. So keep up the good work and thank you!
"I wanted to give a table for all sides to come together and hate in one place". lol, brilliant. So flawlessly delivered and well put. You should be writing to TV and film.
I love your commentary. It both teaches me and gives context to what you are doing at that time. So forget all the haters and continue to do you bc I for one, enjoy your videos the way they are.
A console table would be nice! This project of yours is one of the best ones. Thanks for sharing your art with those of us who are fans of this type of work.
A set of chisels - or just one really nice chisel. This table might be one of my favorites from you! I love how beautiful something so simple can look. See you in the next one
The value of a work of art depends on where people look at it.
For me this is a high work of art.
My name's Richie Painter . I'm out here in South Carolina and I love your videos. I don't think you talk too much cause it's a lot of information. I'm a woodworker to and have learned a lot from you so thanks for that and keep up the great work.
"I wanted to give a table for all sides to come together and Hate upon". I just choked/ spit out my coffee on that one. Awesome. Frak the haters, do what you love. Tables were made like this centuries ago so who were the haters to say that a certain style will become dated. Can they tell the future? You make beautiful tables that make you happy and the people that buy them happy. That's all you need
Don’t listen to the hate comments your work is always amazing and the cometary is very informative!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I'm not sure if my YT comment section filter out the bad comments, as I never see them.
@@shaun8309 Me neither
The negative comments are only like 1 out of 50 or so. Maybe not as common as I make it sound
Personally, I love that you talk through your video. It’s easy to focus on the work, and your talk and explanations complete they learning process for me. Thanks! As far as what’s the best part of your giveaway to win And what to call it, I can’t decide. I’d LOVE to have one of your dining tables.
Please keep being yourself. That is why we are all here! Stop letting the one have a stick up their you know what stop you from being you!
Also, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, your narration is integral to the enjoyment, and learning, I get from your videos. Keep talking.
Bob Ross wasn’t “Bob Ross” when he started. Everyone has a learning curve and their own pace. Beautiful job, as usual!!!
bob ross was bob ross, perhaps he didn't had the same style or way to express at the beginning, but definitively, he was bob ross, always
Cam, I don't have the tools, skill or plans to ever do woodworking like this, but I do love watching your videos. There is something really and relaxing about them. Thanks for posting!
I think a small coffee table would be an amazing giveaway item. Or an end table for bedside.
Wow that Elm is beautiful!
I love the random stuff you do put in reverse like the plastic on the table 😂. You’re a wizard. Also thank you for adding everything you use in the description it’s helped me out a ton of times
that's an absolutely beautiful table. one of my favorite i've seen you make, for sure
Thanks also for your acknowledgement of the time it takes, and how new woodworkers like me can see a 20 or 30 minute video and get lolled into thinking the process is that compressed in real life. You said not to worry if your projects take hours or days. Mine take weeks and sometimes months and its easy to think you pros are superhuman!!
The reason I watch other than watching you create amazing art is because you talk.. Appreciate what you have to say and how you say it.
I can’t imagine not watching the whole video. You make your epoxy work look so easy. Here in Ga, with our humidity and heat, I struggled when building a boat. A wooden boat requires a lot of epoxy. I enjoy these videos.
Why not rebrand Elm into “Patagonian Tooth Tree”?
I now have an image of the population of Patagonia having big wooden teeth...
A furniture piece would be an incredible giveaway. Especially a collab with Flowyline! For those of us who watch, not because we want to create these ourselves, but just because we love to see the creation and the beauty of the pieces.
It's mesmerizing how you bring wood slabs to beautiful works of art. Before the end of the second video, I knew I'd never do half the work you do on a single piece. I'm still hooked. The best prize (for me) is watching the process. Also enjoy your humor. ❤
Don’t change a THING you’re doing with these videos. You’ve hit a perfect formula. The finished products speak for themselves, but your running monologue brings your audience through the process brilliantly.
As far as the 1 million giveaway goes, make 1,000 commemorative plaques and ship them out to 1,000 random subscribers.
This was one of the best tables you've made so far imho. I love the texture of the elm wood. That was definitely felt like it gave it more depth. All this beautiful dark parts on the bright surface of the wood. I really like that it feels rather matt than glossy.
Really enjoyed watching this video. I really would love to build a workshop as well in the future. As for 100mil give away, gift is a gift... However that electric planer looks pretty sweet. Keep it up man. Looking forward to next one.
"Everyone complains about the Live Edge - It's such a fad!"
"Everyone complains about cutting off the Live Edge - Ruining a perfectly good slab!"
What about all the others? "I can't believe you did both Live Edge & Straight Edge on the same desk! It looks like it can't decide what it wants to be!" lol
You can never please everyone, so focus on pleasing the client 😃 You do amazing work!
I subbed to you after literally watching one video. I enjoy the talking rather than music or tool sounds. I'm not even into wood working or carpentry. I'm a concrete guy. But for some reason thses make me relax alot after working 10 hrs a day!
My only experience with epoxy is a pendant and Keychain , I made with my 32 yr. Olds son ashes. Now I worry of the cheap base metal but I'm living with him blessing my heart for now.
Hey Cam, That is one beautiful piece of timber and you have done it proud with just enough live edge to make it interesting and minimal use of epoxy which leads to a better appreciation of the timber. Excellent job. Cheers mate!
this is one of my favorite projects that you have done so far. looks beautiful. well done.
What's funny is that I really enjoy the constant commentary
I’ve watched several of your videos… actually have learned a lot. I will never understand the need to satisfy everyone. If I ever start a RUclips channel. I guess if they don’t like what I say or do they can keep scrolling…. Love your content brotha. Keep it up.
Thanks Karl!
I love that you used elm. Where I live in Atlantic Canada, we've had many elm trees succumb to Dutch elm disease. As a woodworker that really prefers to use wood sourced from blow downs and diseased trees, I've used it a lot. It has a beautiful grain structure, and definitely doesn't get the love it deserves. Oh, and of course, beautiful work as always.
Just started watching you and I think your commentary is a must. Thank you so much for the content and as for someone who’s always wanted to do something like this, and has been a general hobbyist woodworker with basic knowledge of woodworking, encourages me to start somewhere. Also, saw a couple comments on doing a vid of you just using common garage tools or hand tools to make something. Mabe not a 4x8 dining table, but something more manageable. Thanks again!
I hate watching videos that teach an art or a skill without any talking! Hearing the whys and hows help me understand. :)
No one is asking those who don’t like what you do with the wood to purchase the piece! I love what you do!
Giveaway: Festool sander
Elm should just be rebranded as Tree Bass.
Couple ideas for prizes: finish process set (buffer and pad, rubio monocoat, ceramic coat, etc); c-chanel and/or leg set.
Love the humor and troll bits. And obviously the woodwork.
Cam, what you produce time after time with your table & desks are nothing short of 'GREAT WORKS OF ART'. I am not a woodworker, I am a disabled former Senior Master of Art in South Australia. I majored in Sculpture, predominantly in wood, Design, Graphics & a few others. I now spend a LOT of time watching videos of people, like yourself, who work in wood. It gives me great enjoyment & takes my mind off of the constant pain. How people can be critical of your work is beyond me. You are an Artist & Craftsman of rare skill. This desk is another exceptional piece of 'work' but it does not seem to be 'work' to you. I hope to watch more of your videos well into the future. Stay safe & well my friend, Don from South Aust.
"I just wanted to give one place for everybody to get together and hate together" I love it!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey man great job as always the elm table finished was great, you really brought the wood to life. Also you are an excellent teacher and your explanations are easy to follow great job man don't let the haters get you down.
I love the idea of a a slab as the prize, as well as video chats with you on projects. The table looks amazing, keep up the good work. I see what you mean with the black epoxy, it looks really good
I don’t mind your talking on the video. I cling to your every word. I find it informative and entertaining. Keep talking.
Well evening, don’t worry about the critics. I don’t mind the talking. I also like the long videos you post. Lots of on-site to working and making very beautiful pieces of wood and what you turn them into. Amazing
I like how you bring all parties together under one cause! 😂 Such a unifier!! Keep making the great content!
Please don’t listen to the loud extreme minority of people lacking a funny bone. It never works out for anyone, even the squeaky wheels. Gotta give complainers something to live for, and god knows the rest of us need the funnies now more than ever.
your sense of humor is one of the things that sets you apart. Your comments about the particularly shaped . . . anomaly in the slab were hilarious. Yes, they were arguably off-color, but thats' humor for you. Don't let the critics / naysayers limit you. (I watched til the end but have no suggestions for you)
“You’re only young once, but you can be immature forever”. Keep up the great videos. Love the bow ties!
7:06 this man is a complete joker. He 100% deserves a like for this
ELM. Every Tree has its own characteristic beauty…. The heart of a true woodworker is to accentuate that beauty. You good sir…. Have given ELM a place of honor. Thank You
Personally hand setting bow ties i think is for more personal than cnc. You don't talk to much your comentary is spot on. All the hand work you do is totally awesome. I subscribed after i saw your first video. All the ones I've seen have been watched start to finish
Love watching blacktail it show me how to have patience n attention to details something I've been working on since been in service
DUDE! That is a heck of a giveaway! Also beautiful results on this! Can't wait to see the other piece they bought.
Oh my, what to choose? A Gobi slab or cool tool for me. You'll toss in a shirt right? That Elm turned out stunning. Congratulations on such rapid growth.
I don't CARE what people think what the grain look like!!!!! you make beautiful tables!
Cam I've been building houses for 35 years and you are a good woodworker man I enjoy watching you I've learned some tricks I'm following some of your tricks and they work very well thanks for the commentary I don't care what they say I love how you talk your way through your videos and explain every little thing you're great man
I don't intend on ever making a table like this, my biggest wood working project so far was putting together an Ikea desk. But your videos are still mesmorizing and your art is beautiful!
I started woodworking over the last year, and let me tell you how much more my mind is blown. This guy is making lemonade out of coffee grounds.
I think the best gift would be the epoxy, as someone who’s is just trying to get into making a few epoxy items, the epoxy would be super helpful but the planner and other tools are a few levels above me and others like me. Love the videos keep it up!
Fire table would be great for the furniture piece for the million subs. Absolutely love, love, love that table. One of the more unique of all the ones you've done, it was awesome!
hey there, i am a huge fan from quebec/canada, showed your channel to a few people, i keep hearing you saying you talk too much. well you are not boring, always usefull tip and amazing result. dont change that, this is not a tic tok show, it is an utility amazing project getting done.
keep up the good work
I've found your channel probably a few days ago and I'm just in love with how you turn rough natural wood into this amazing wood parts people request. I know nothing about wood so I can only say "keep up the great work".
Friendly challenge - I'd love to see you make more of your own bases for your tables. I think we have all seen your process on producing a top, however I've barely seen any videos where you make a complex base involving joinery. I think this could be a great opportunity to produce new content. I do understand how straightforward it is to just attach a metal base, and it also looks great, but some of the finer points & skills of woodworking come out when making the base for a table.
Si, I really appreciate you talking through the video. I'm able to understand everything you do. If you doubt your talking, please know that I support it. Cheers.
I grew up in my dad's woodworking shop. So I really appreciate your workmanship. Thanks. I learn a lot from you about wood, products and skills.
Cam I love this desk so much that I decided to subscribe to your channel on my work email too. Although I usually love a darker colour of wood but I think the black epoxy complements the wood so well. Its been half a year since you posted this and now you're 500k short of 2M subscribers! You deserve it all for your work. Kudos to you Cam
Cheers!
When I was a young kid growing up in St. Paul, MN in the early 1970''s the streets of our neighborhood were lined with 50 year old elm trees. The trees arching over the streets made each street a green cathedral.
Then Dutch Elm Disease came through and the city cut down all the trees. It was heartbreaking.
Wow, I just posted something very similar to this before I saw your post. Yes, losing the Elms along the city streets was very sad! (In my case, Milwaukee.)
Damn those dutchies
Same here currently in SE WIs. Except they are all Ash trees, no more elms to take down. There are close to 150 Ash trees on 4 blocks. We have lost 20 to Ash borer so far and there is no end in site.
The legs on this desk are so unique. It's lovely
Cam
I enjoy the running dialog. Thats where
i learn.i like to know what you're doing, why you're doing it and the products and tools involved. Youre the perfect presented, let the
Naysayers stick with the silent film era.
Love that you left a more natural and clean look to this top. The grain pattern on the slab is awesome! Great work!
A coffe table would be terrific for anyone am sure, that desk as what ever you have done it´s just awesome pieces of art
A table in choice of available woods. Everyone needs one. Can be used in a variety of spaces. I loved this table, and I love all of your videos. You are amazing!
Cam, very interesting theory about connection between the name of the wood species and its popularity in woodworking. In Russia we call elm "Karagach" and it's the most popular wood specie in slab table industry. We have also two other names for elm: "Vyaz", "Elm". More interesting part is that lots of people heard about "karagach" slabs and "vyaz" wood but they don't know that it's the same wood specie.
Love the work you do! I love the equal opportunity approach to critics, made me laugh. I would have to say the helical head planer would be cool, but I actually have apiece of your art would be the best. Yes what he does is art. Great wok, great editing and voice over as well.
Your running commentary is appealing. Really sets a good tone to your videos. And as for your female appendage comment shows you have a sense of humour and the kind of guy I'd work/hang with. Once again love your work
I have simple/traditional tastes, and I think this one is a home run. Slab is spectacular and legs/base matches beautifully and has just the right amount of flair.
Most of the prizes you have already arranged really fit your brand well, so I'm not sure what else could be added to it.
The gem polisher.
Came here to say this. I'd be ecstatic to win any of them and they're all on brand. Maybe a saw blade pack?
Great work bro!
Thanks bud!
Very lovely table. I wish I can afford one! Thanks for sharing. Love the natural wood patterns.
A visit to the shop. Love the way the maple finished out around the crack. Looked like a river that was kissed by the sun. Great work and God Bless.
Damn, what a great slab!!!
Whaaaaat hi
Papaaaa
The part about bringing attention to the female anatomy and promising to not do it again(while doing it again) made my laugh and earned you a subscriber :)
I really like that epoxy kit as a million sub giveaway
Yeah, that was cool the way he just slid that one in there.
Just binge watched a bunch of your videos today. Not into woodworking at all myself and not even sure how I found your channel. The tables look AMAZING but this light color wood with the black epoxy is 🔥🔥🔥
I think your sense of humor is awesome as hell. I’d say the ones criticizing you for it, are the ones that spend $10K on a bookend. Not one of your creations that are bookend tables, no no. I mean the things used to keep books standing up when there aren’t enough to go from one side to the other on a bookshelf.
You should really annoy them and pour a full epoxy table with live edge all the way around it!
I wish I had the $$ to commission this.
I've never met a man that isn't comfortable with his 12 year old side. I would think a small table would be most universal. On another note, that elm was beautiful. There were two in the neighbors yard where I grew up. We were constantly picking up after those trees. They drop small limbs by the bundle. My father wanted them dead. 🙂
I'm one of the women that still have my 12 year old side, the playful, adventurous, curious, tool-loving, creative, see-gold-in-what-other-see-as-trash side, and I just turned 59 a few days ago, and as every year my wish no 1 is:
Please don't let me wake up one day and see that side gone!! And I get a need for cleaning my windows every week (instead of 1-2 times a year), and instead of having a great time with a golden sword-fight (2 useless sticks from the forest for most dull adults) with my neighbor's 8 year old son, with all the sounds like from an old Chinese Karate movie or build very long high-speed track for small cars from old water pipes, etc.
On my 50th birthday, my ex and best friend gave me a new DeWalt drill and driver set as he knew I would say this to fx a Diamant ring:
"You know I have a good glass cutter and why pay more than 10 dollars for new one? Give it back and let's find something a lot more useful for the money"! :D
I know this is an old video, but you made me just realize my epoxy table I built is not birds eye maple but is in fact elm. Goes to show how much a welder knows about wood species
Awesome work. I am impressed more with each video I watch. I am getting many great tips from your videos. I have been making different live edge and reclaimed lumber furniture pieces for myself and as gifts. Using your tips and idea make my projects turn out even better. I now have agreed to do a couple projects for people that have been asking me to make pieces for them for a while. Much more confident in making and selling the furniture now.
Thanks,
Kelly
