Doom Multiplayer Is So Underrated

- Doom's Multiplayer scene is criminally underrated, especially when you factor in the Classic Doom games. Except for 64 which I've heard doesn't have multiplayer. 2016 is also underrated and Eternal's Battlemode is something I'm not really into. But heavy hitter conversion projects like Quake Champions Doom Edition and Halo Doom show that Doom modded multiplayer can be pretty nuts. Also, Co-Op is hella fun.

I've always felt it was somewhat sad that Unreal didn't achieve the same level of saturation as Doom amongst modders as it had the superior engine, but I know that a huge part of why is because it wasn't open sourced. I'd bet that Tim Sweeney is happy with his choices there, but I still wish it had been open sourced too.
Also, mapping is just a lot harder in true 3D. Quake is less saturated too. (I mean, it's still beating Unreal these days, but)
@@keiyakins Have you used UnrealEd though? It makes it exceedingly easy to map in 3D. I think it really is just because it was never open sourced. Of course, the editor was licensed, as well as a few of the engine technologies they used like sound and video playback, so they would've had to get multiple other permissions to open source the entire package.
@@anon_y_mousse unrealed is terrible. There's just so, so many traps you have to avoid, entire features that just don't work... it's like trying to use Hammer.
Honestly, I think Trenchbroom is the least bad full 3d mapping tool, even with having to be sure not to leave leaks.
@@anon_y_mousseThat still doesn't compare to how simple Doom modding is. Doom hits the perfect sweet spot between simple and complex. It's got enough of a toolkit that you don't quickly exhaust all its possibilities (like, I'd argue, Wolfenstein 3D does before you even finish the official maps), yet it's still limited enough that you can easily wrap your head around how it works and whip up a decent map or mod fairly quickly. Even the Quake games, which are also open source, don't have nearly the mod scene Doom does.
@@thegodofalldragons True, the simplified design does lend itself especially well to modding. Although, you don't really have to wrap your head around how things work in the engine, just how to accomplish what you're trying to do. A lot of the time with U1, I only had to visualize how a building would be laid out architecturally and to fill in some gaps with warp zones to pieces off to the side. Scripting things was easy for me as a programmer, partly because I could look at how other objects were scripted and figure out how to implement my own functionality based on that. Like when I wanted to copy the Halo shield capabilities, I copied a Power Shield and pulled in some of the code from the Amplifier to figure out timing events. Then I used a game mode to force it into my inventory for every level start. But I fully acknowledge that because most modders don't already know how to program, and don't learn how the correct way if they learn it just to mod, that they won't have as easy of a time at modding, which is part of why Doom won, it was easy for everyone to mod.
Multiplayer Deathmatch kind of made Doom on those early office networks, but IMO the really under-rated mode is multiplayer co-op. I love that once you get into Doom 2 and the two Final Doom packs, the levels often have enemies that only spawn in on multiplayer games, giving levels like Downtown a bit of an extra challenge because there's a Cyberdemon stalking you through the streets.

The reason people didn’t like doom 2016 isn’t because it was bad, it was because it felt slow in comparison to like quake. If doom eternal had fast paced arena multiplayer then it would be a great multiplayer but we got battle mode instead unfortunately.
Yeah, when running speed is faster in Doom 1 than the new Doom you know ID fucked up.
As someone who is 37 years old and grew up with doom and quake games I can say that the doom games were more of a single player but also fun as hell to play on a LAN in coop or death match. We used to do that in our house back when dialup internet was a thing and we got to ocassionally multiplayer by having our computer call someone elses computer lol.
quake was also a big hit on the single player games but by that time it was getting closer to when GameSpy came around and made online games easier to play. we played a lot of deathmatch quake in this house lol. But doom 3 is when it really became more multiplayer focus with the single player aspect feeling more like just bot training for the multiplayer. champions continued this where-as quake 4 tried more of a story I believe.
both games were legendary for both single and multiplayer back in their days and every other game wanted to be just like them. id actually licensed out their engines to many games.
Well, Doom I + II is out now, with many of the stuff that you talked about here included.
This makes me want to check out all kinda of classic doom mp mods, great video!
It's actually absurd to me that so many people say Doom 2016's multiplayer wasn't good, it kept me coming back for years after the game released even when snapmap's limited nature started to show
Well well my friend…
Fantastic video bro
Don't forget D4T, which can be the closest to D2016 MP without the 2 weapon limit.
Going back to the official games: Because these modes can have exclusive stuff like D3 MP power ups or maps in BattleMode, it can be a shame when that stuff is overlooked, be it not used in an SP context or stuff like a horde mode that uses the content.
2016 even had maps that fit into the lore they were establishing.
I always think of how the games and their content can be preserved, specially in an "eternal" series with a great legacy.
I guess Mighty Doom is the most screwed game in this regard.
dont forget there's a deathmatch mod for doom eternal now
Wait, WHAT?
Thx for that info.
So no longer on console got it
That's right. It's called Slayer vs Slayer. In fact, there's an entire modding scene around multiplayer for eternal, and it's a very active and fun scene i recommend getting into.
I love ultrakill, but there’s just something about classic doom 1 and 2 that hits different
@EwokHunter27 Sometimes simple is all you need. Love Ultrakill too, but it can also be a mental gymnastics sessions and sometimes I'm just not in the mood for it.
@@SackoYTagreed
I feel like classic doom mp was more active back in the Skulltag days when I was younger
I would love to play classic doom mp more often
2016 Multiplayer felt amazing. After mastering Eternal the weapon combos for 2016 multiplayer is just perfect.
@DooDoo-f4v Yeah, Battlemode did nothing for me. After two matches I was done with it. Would've preferred a deathmatch or at the very least a 1v1 duel mode.
You know what you might also check out? The Freedoom Project, it's basically an alternative to Doom, you can run most doom wads with it, the gameplay it's the same, but the whole rest it's different, and since thr 0.13 has been release on January 29 (On the year that this comment has been published), now it's clear what you're facing on Freedoom, more than ever.
On Doom you face Demons, right? Well, on Freedoom, you face Aliens.
Freedoom it's a Free (As in Free Speech) and Open Source game that anyone can enjoy, and it's actually 3 games in 1.
Two Single Player campaings and One Set of Multiplayer Maps
I know of Freedoom and have played it. It's definitely a great game with an alternative vision to Doom.
0:37 I recommend you to play Hedon Bloodrite and the Ashes series - Ashes 2063, its expansion and Ashes: Afterglow - if you haven't already. These titles are the best retro single-player shooters I've ever played. Of course, it's all subjective here, I'm not saying that you are wrong, I'm just recommending some games.
6:23 I have seen a DOOM Eternal mod where you duel people, arena shooter style. You might wanna check that out.
Great video as always, broken!
I've heard of those two. Been meaning to play Ashes but I always get sidetracked.
Didn't know about the duel mod. That's awesome. That's exactly what the game needed.
Yeah this is great to play online, haven't done so in a while and may do so now.
Ooo I'd love to play classic doom multiplayer
Zandronum my guy
@@SevenCompleted awesome
Remember Ghouls vs Humans
Doom(2016) is amazing in multiplayer, and zDaemon Doom is amazing too
Agreed. That and Snapmap are the two things that give 2016 an edge over Eternal when it comes to replayability.
Doom's your all-time favorite fps series? For me it's Unreal Tournament. That is the best first person shooter series of all-time, with Unreal Tournament 2004 being the greatest fps of all-time.
Doom Multiplayer can be fun, If your playing in a private lobby with your friends and you've exhausted every other option.
I'm pretty sure Zandronum has no players because all of the people who play this game are bigot's who only play here because they got banned from other games.
I joined one of the only server's with real players on it and people were saying slurs in text chat.
Keep in mind this was on the Weekend during the evening.
For some fucking reason there is no option to censor the chat, Your would think it would be trivial for the most popular multiplayer source port to implement this, but I guess not.
And this is only gonna get worse, I heard a rumor that Zandronum was gonna be adding Voice Chat, Which is probably gonna be just as unfiltered as the text chat is.
Unless that voice chat has kernel level AI moderation commission from Tencent themselves, this games players count is going to go into the negatives.
@bigbad75_YT I can definitely see that being a potential issue. No matter how casual an experience, you always get a few rotten apples infecting the chat system, making it more toxic overtime.
1. Giga Based
2. Zandromum lets you mute individual people + the most popular server hosting sites like TSPG don't allow anyone to post messages using "strong words".
will u make a video on the risk of rain remaster?
I will at some point. Looking forward to it!
Multiplayer Coop is very UNDERRATED, Yes those levels are designe for one player and for Death-Match but still coop is underrated.
Also... You knows a DOOM mod called BYOC who is too similar to Samsara but with distint OCs or characters from other medias instead of 90's and 2000's FPS characters?
Haven't heard ot that one. But will check it out.
They need to make MP easier to execute.
What Quake map are you playing at 8:40?
Used to play alot on the Hell on earth starter pack server a few years back, so much fun was had, sadly these days ppl only play vanilla or doom wads that are so modified it doesn't even look like doom anymore.
6:12 yeah that's why you can't enjoy because you didn't commit to it battlemode is as hard as it is enjoyable
@@filip2210 I just don't care for it.
Check out the multiplayer mod QC:DE.
Wonderful game i put a ton of hours in. Eleena was my main and especially in the pre-qzandronum builds her movement was one of the favourite in any shooter i've ever played.
I showed some footage of it in the video. Great game!
Actually, Doom is not really single player focused. The game is more of a middle ground between Wolfenstein and Quake. It's both single player and multiplayer focused.
That might have been the intention at the beginning. But each instalment has only shown that the single player was its biggest strength. Doom is seen more as a single player experience historically as well as today and for good reason.
Thanks to modding though, it's multiplayer has lots of potential.
lmao, never was, always remained epic.
It is certainly epic, especially classic doom multiplayer mods. But not as many people play it, that's why it's underrated.
welcome to 2023
