  • In this week's episode I talk about how linearity effects games. Is linearity a thing of the past or does it allow for unique oppurtunities of gaming experiences. it's the second one but I ended up talking about it for ten minutes. Metroid Fusion is a really unique game that uses linearity to its fullest advantage by introducing things like the SA-X to make the player feel restricted. Linear games will always have a place in the gaming landscape but if a game is to be linear they should follow Metroid Fusion's example by taking linearity to the next level. Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe!

I love fusion. I think what caused it’s initial black sheep status was : imagine you played it upon release, you loved super Metroid because of how open it was. Now here comes this game railroading you into a story. A good story for sure. I could see why people maybe didn’t love it at first. I think today though it has almost lost that black sheep status. Fusion is a great example of linearity done well.

I love fusion as well, it’s probably my favorite in the series!

I liked fusion, but it wasn't as memorable for me as super, i played them basically back to back. In it's current state fusion is just too linear and restrictive without much to warrant it. I wish they used this concept on a more powerful console and went full out with the horror focus of being stuck on a station with the scariest species in the galaxy, because the creepy situations it creates are definetly good, but for most of the gameplay it's just frustratingly linear with boring aesthtetics

Heys guys we’re almost to 500 subs which is the next big milestone so I’m excited for that. Thanks for sticking around even though I’ve slowed my upload speed by quite a bit, I hope by doing that the videos are of much better quality than before

I made a video going over exactly why Fusion is great because of its linearity.
Also, Super just disguises its linearity really well. You can't really do bosses out of order unless you've been playing the game for _years._

Yeah that video was actually the inspiration behind this one so this is kinda surreal. Thanks for commenting on two of my videos!

My problem with Fusion’s linearity is that I never feel like I have the chance to explore and find missiles. Adam is always telling me what my goal is, so I always feel like I should go there, and so I only feel like I have time to collect stuff at the very end of the game

100% think "open world" has become too much of a buzz word than an actual choice used to improve games.

open worlds are only worthwhile when done properly, and most of the time even huge AAA studios have a hard time doing that.

Everything Fusion does with its linear structure could've been done _better_ with an open design.
Give you a few sectors to explore at a time in any desired order, with extra options for moving through rooms depending on which order you did them due to the items you get within them.
With sectors opening up in sets, each with an objective to complete at the end of them, you could still ramp up and build upon level design ideas, one set building upon the last. You could even take what happens in Sectors 2 and 5, with parts of them changing in structure as you progress, and apply it to all the sectors to totally revamp them for return trips along the story.
Finally, the SA-X, utterly suffers within the linear design, they continuously build it up as this threat that could appear at any moment, but ALL of its encounters are scripted, they even tell you at one point that there are multiple of them on the station due to it multiplying, but you only ever see one at a time.
It would be far better if the SA-X actually had a random chance to show up within certain areas within sectors while you're moving through them, forcing you to run far enough away to lose it.
This would also consequently make the Ice Missiles AND Diffusion Missile upgrade so much more substantial, they already prove to be useful during the scripted encounters in the version of the game we have, but strategically lining up a shot to hit them with an Ice Missile so that you can get away easier would feel like so much more of a skillful play, and the Diffusion Missile upgrade would serve as the easy AOE way to freeze the SA-X after going through most the game having to actually aim at it.
And you could still have the mandatory scripted encounters with the SA-X alongside the random encounters, having guaranteed meetings with it would still be important to build it up as a threat in the event that the player simply gets lucky enough to never hit the RNG for the random ones.

I have a good feeling that sort of criticism you made for the SA-X influenced the EMMIs in Dread

    • @Cri_Jackal
      @Cri_Jackal Год назад

@@mr.sniffly5297 Absolutely, though they didn't fully commit to the idea in full, having the stalker enemy actually show up randomly, it's still far better implemented game design-wise.
Though the SA-X still has a far more menacing presence, those scripted sequences where you're just watching it pace around, not even aware you're there, do a lot to set up the fear factor, that and the fact that's it's a sapient living creature and not a mindless robot.

I like linear games for 3 main things: pacing, setpiece moments, and better controllable level design.

I think both linear and nonlinear games have their place in the landscape. There’s really nothing like the freedom a wholly nonlinear game offers.

i dunno man. fusion's linearity woulda sat with me better if it didn't have the same problem as super metroid, where progress is often locked behind super obscure hidden blocks and paths (in the water area, for instance. how the fuck was i supposed to know to use the morph ball to go through the one fake tile of wall surrounded by actual wall tiles)
