In the last decade Celtic’s European performances have declined sharply, they can barely muster a Europa League run nowadays. Thrashings from the likes of Legia Warsaw would’ve been unthinkable in the previous decade when they competed admirably and took some major scalps. The landscape has changed and the Scottish League is poor preparation for facing the European giants. What was it against PSG? 12-1 on aggregate?
At least the SPL is still a original league made up mostly of Scots players. The BPL is only a good league because of its foreign players. It bought its success.

@JapaneseSniper1983 yeahhh but you're literally saying we have no right to compete on Europe when we have made history in Europe? And for saying we are league 1 standards is bullshit aswell cause rangers and celtic would walk through league 1.
Unfortunately it is all about the money now. In the early 80’s when money wasn’t so prevalent in the game, the Scottish premier league was probably on a par with the 1st division. You had 4-5 teams able to win the Scottish title every season. It was probably more competitive because Liverpool were dominant as anything. Now they don’t compare at all.
Disgusting that an EX owner THAT failed at crystal palace should put down the spl the way he did. Rangers have reached the last 16 in euro 2 seasons running. @@grantmcroberts4089 Trouble is what you win does not really count! It's a two horse race. Is it 1984 since a team won it outside Glasgow? With respect, working at Palace would be a step for Eddie Howe, where Celtic wouldn't be?
I would take the crystal palace job if I was Eddie Howe. It's a London club which can attract good players and has some good youth players that have potential. What can Celtic offer Eddie Howe Palace cant... European football! People outside scotland are more impress with what Steven Gerrard done in Europe with Rangers than winning scottish leauge
Getting humiliated in Europe you mean and knocked out. As he said Football is about money and Celtic make a fifth of what Palace make a year. Palace spent over a £100M in 2016 when the American billionaires came in that's when they got to the FA Cup final the issue is they then stopped the backing after that. Instead of what Villa have done which is keep going. As he said with a new manager and 13 odd players leaving they are going to have to back the manager. That's when the opportunity to do something happens.
I'm Scottish and yeah, Celtic are a big club, but the league itself is a joke. Gerrard's done well but he never had any experience... Rangers is where he's learning his trade (and doing great it must be said) but that shows where Scotland's at.
As someone from Aberdeen the best thing for all Scottish clubs would be to merge the Scottish league and the English League. It is possibly the only way to give Scottish clubs the money of other European clubs of similar size. There are many problems with this but the only way to actually get Scottish clubs money is to merge the leagues together.
@@noahbowie5985 what are the arguments against this? Should definitely be looked at. However as a Hammer I'd be worried that Celtic and Rangers would give us two more bigger clubs to contend with 😂
@@davidprice679 Mate I'm an Aberdeen Hammer. I'd be worried about it too especially if someone was looking to buy a club (cough GSB out cough) Arguments against it that I can think of off the top of my head are potential loss of local rivalries, increased division between clubs and cities, longer away day journeys (think Aberdeen vs Swansea or Brighton) and potentially massive restructuring of clubs and squads in Scotland. However it's pretty obvious even to me that the best way forward would be to merge the Scottish and English leagues. The only way I can think of for solving many of these issues would be to enlarge the Premier league say by 3-5 places and have those spaces be exclusively for Scottish teams who once they're relegated would drop into the equivalent of the Scottish championship. The one major issue with that plan is the difference in broadcasting revenue between the Premier league and the Scottish championship is so massive that every club that came up would have a massively underfunded squad for the Premier league. Essentially there is no easy one step fix to this problem and chances are things will just go on the way they are. The only meaningful voices in Scottish football of rangers and celtic are happy because they continue to collect silverware on a fairly regular basis. If they started advocating for a merger with the Premier league along with Hearts and Aberdeen for example then it becomes very hard to stop it from happening.
@@noahbowie5985 I think the other issue is to do with international set up. While some Welsh clubs are in England there is still the Welsh league and Cup with European places. Scotland will need to retain an equivalent otherwise the argument for a UK international side will resurface within FIFA. Outside of Old Firm, Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen not sure many would carry the prestige to hold their own in league 1 long term. As such they'd probably remain in the Scottish set up, but would unlikely vote in agreement of losing their biggest gates of the season and lower division sides losing their potential Cup paydays.
Playing European football of any level is more attractive than managing Crystal Palace that realistically can't achieve anything, bar some Leicester level miracle

@@jamesgibson8088 we're not talking about Leicester and West Ham though, it's Crystal Palace. Again Simon is right, when they qualify for the Champions league, they just go out to play in the 2nd rate Europa Cup, against teams from the back end of Liechtenstein or Outer Mongolia.
Celtic win trophies virtually every year, they play in Europe every season, they have a massive fan base and a great history! Yet the Celtic board and their players would give their right arm to swap places with palace if they could 😂 Think that says it all tbh
That might be true but Celtic and rangers are bigger clubs. If they both play in the priemer league, both clubs would earn more revenue, which would allow them to buy better players. So Celtic and rangers would probably end up being better than a few premier league teams.
@@alphamentality5802 Simons point must not be relevant then because Palace and celtic play in a different league. So pointless anyone commenting or comparing all together because it's all if and buts🤔
Actually an interesting Q. to look at early stages of a managers development and the opportunities that are afforded in European competition. Yes, Palace is much better funded club, however Gerrard has enabled Rangers to achieve progress within the Europa league (more so than Rodgers at Celtic), and through the European Coefficient they are in Champions League qualifiers. At Rangers his team improved the performances of virtually every player he brought in across the season, and achieved consistency - hence premier league clubs are after a fair few of them at increased value. Hopefully the club can recover and be sustainably financed It’s quite bizarre to think, given how we are routinely told that even Championship teams would walk over Celtic and Rangers, that Leicester fell out of the Europa league before Rangers did, and Tottenham are in the Conference League whilst Rangers will be in UCL qualifiers... And then there’s Palace. It will be a massive task to achieve a European spot of any sort (whether Conference or, even more unlikely, Europa). So yes, it’s a more ambitious job in terms of finance and attracting higher value players in a higher quality competitive league, but that’s not the only dimension to it Gerrard has openly said that Rangers was an ideal challenge to take on as his first managerial project, that he enjoys the intense atmosphere, and hopes to bring them pride through improving their performances in European tournaments, not just the Scottish League🤷🏼♀️ + Can’t only judge the “size of the job” by the competitiveness and financing of the league; if it were that straightforward, Palace would be bigger and more enticing job than a club like Ajax, who were in the UCL semi final in 2018/19. Can’t just be “Premier League trumps the Eridivisie, therefore-“

After the super league chat, can we talk about the impact of the Premier league on the Scottish league? Ever since the 90's Scottish teams have not been able to compete with the money that trickles down from the Premier league to the championship and league 1 and 2. Can't compete with wages or income. Simon is spot on, if Palace's board back him, the Crystal Palace job is a better proposal for a young manager with aspirations of managing a top team. Celtic is a great club but there is no room to prove how good a manager you are, you either do what is expected (win Scottish trophies) or you screw up and destroy your career.
Jim incapable of putting forward or sustaining a coherent argument. Simon (who i don't like) has Jim tied in knots here, every word making perfect sense. Let's be honest, if you dropped Rangers or Celtic into the Prem, they'd be in the relegation spots. West Brom and Fulham have more strength and depth than Celtic and Rangers.
Simon is right. Jim's argument is like an American making the claim that the Detroit Lions are "a big club" because they won NFL titles in the 50's and were at that time a class franchise, ignoring that the sport's landscape has so utterly and completely changed since. The Lions are still one of the most well supported teams in the NFL, but are a completely irrelevant franchise. Celtic is still a big club in terms of its support, but due to circumstances somewhat beyond their control (the bad league), they aren't a truly big club anymore. The economics of the situation prevent it from even being possible. If Celtic and Rangers were smart, they'd find a way into the English pyramid, and maybe take Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, and Dundee United with them. I'm sure they'd have to start low down the pyramid, but Celtic and Rangers would progress quickly. Under this scenario, both clubs also become more attractive for bigger and better ownership groups, and in the Premier League, could become legitimate forces over the course of a few years. Again, the current economics of the game mean a purely Scottish league isn't going to produce a squad that's relevant on the European level.
Palace is a much more attractive prospect than Celtic. There's no comparison. Palace are in the PL, automatically more finances per annum. On top of that it could become a project, they've got a handful of quality players there Zaha, Eze, Schlupp, Guita, PVA, to name a few. I mean if he's being backed by the Yanks then why wouldn't he. I mean Celtic are in a mess, Rangers are gonna go on and win the Scottish prem for the next 3 years I bet. Celtic have to rebuild and it goes no where. PL in itself is such more of a attractive league than the SPL it's mad😂 As for Jim saying Celtic beating Palace over two legs is a joke😂

@@NiqueSir That's one way of looking at it and yes it was deemed as failure from both clubs in that cup. The other way to look at it tho is that teams like St Mirren (who put Rangers out the cup) cant be that bad if they beat a team that outperformed Leicester in europe for 2 seasons in a row...

Similarly if you put rangers or celtic in the English league, I reckon they'd struggle to get in the top half the table.
Jim made the wrong argument the reason why Celtic would be better for Eddie is he can develop his style of football he tried to bring to Bournemouth a passing active style football. its not going to take much to compete with rangers so he'll be given time to perfect it. It will take years to change the football culture at palace and he won't get the time the most he can do is play the defensive football and hope to get enough results to keep him for a relegation battle
It is. Go to Celtic, win the league a million times and then....what? Brendan Rodgers left to go to Leicester because it’s a greater challenge and a step up.

Bigger club is not even worth talking about but the better gig is Palace. The Prem is the reason why and not specifically Palace, Palace spent more money than Rangers & Celtic put together in the Summer because of the revenue of the Prem. Rodgers & Gerrard leaving Championship winning sides to rebuild a mid table Prem side says it all
Well one thing that I will say is the infrastructure of Celtic and rangers completely dwarfs palace I have been to selhurst park and let's just say it has to one of the poorest premier league stadiums and their only ambition is to stay in the premier league year after year but if the debate is your stock will be higher managing in England than Scotland then yes obviously but can you imagine how powerful Celtic and Rangers could be if they joined the premier league because they would get far more tv money than they receive in their league?
Good thing the club bought the land the stadium is on in 2010 then. There's planning permission for a £100M stand replacement to make it a 35K seater on the way and a brand new £20M Cat 1 academy site nearing completion. Plan is to replace each stand one by one. That's what the premier league money gets you. Palace have been spending/reserving the cash for infrastructure not players.

Celtic and Rangers being bigger than Palace is irrelevent. Its probably more exciting to imagine the improvements you can make to an established Premier League side than to know you'll either be first or second in a league that doesn't have much interest to people outside of Scotland. Of course this topic will get a boring England v Scotland argument going but that's my opinion. You had 4-5 teams able to win the Scottish title every season. It was probably more competitive because Liverpool were dominant as anything. Now they don’t compare at all.

I'd be worried about it too especially if someone was looking to buy a club (cough GSB out cough)
Arguments against it that I can think of off the top of my head are potential loss of local rivalries, increased division between clubs and cities, longer away day journeys (think Aberdeen vs Swansea or Brighton) and potentially massive restructuring of clubs and squads in Scotland.
That doesn't mean palace is a better gig than celtic.
Playing European football of any level is more attractive than managing Crystal Palace that realistically can't achieve anything, bar some Leicester level miracle

Hopefully the club can recover and be sustainably financed
It’s quite bizarre to think, given how we are routinely told that even Championship teams would walk over Celtic and Rangers, that Leicester fell out of the Europa league before Rangers did, and Tottenham are in the Conference League whilst Rangers will be in UCL qualifiers... And then there’s Palace. It will be a massive task to achieve a European spot of any sort (whether Conference or, even more unlikely, Europa). So yes, it’s a more ambitious job in terms of finance and attracting higher value players in a higher quality competitive league, but that’s not the only dimension to it
Gerrard has openly said that Rangers was an ideal challenge to take on as his first managerial project, that he enjoys the intense atmosphere, and hopes to bring them pride through improving their performances in European tournaments, not just the Scottish League🤷🏼♀️ + Can’t only judge the “size of the job” by the competitiveness and financing of the league; if it were that straightforward, Palace would be bigger and more enticing job than a club like Ajax, who were in the UCL semi final in 2018/19.
He’s guaranteed to get trophies on his CV at Celtic. The best he could achieve at Palace is mid table and a cup run.
But it's trophies that no1 cares about outside of Scotland as it only goes to one of Two clubs, you have a 50% chance of winning every competition you enter before it's started, except Europe where its 1% 😂🤣
@@NiqueSir Neither Celtic nor Rangers even made it close to the final of this season's Scottish League cup so there goes your claim that its one or the other that wins everything straight away. Also Rangers have gone further in european competition than Leicester have 2 seasons in a row and Leicester are sittin at the top of the PL. Rangers have gone out of europe at the same stage as Tottenham, to a Czech opposition that even Arsenal couldn't beat at home. Think ye need a serious reality check mate. 👍
@@C1872-e3n although my ignorance somewhat proves my point a little further, the fact that no1 out of Scotland cares about Scottish football 🤣 if either of them didn't win that cup , then that's a massive failure on their part, as the other teams in Scotland are basically championship level, more fool them.
@@C1872-e3n yeah I can see your argument there, I guess its more that every dog can have their day. But I'd wager that if celtic or rangers played Leicester 10 times, Leicester would probably win 8 out of 10 of those matches.
European nights at celtic and rangers are unbelievable until until half time when their both getting stuffed and on the way out .pub league
Aye that is why rangers got to the last 16 and got further that Leicester right
Great banter between friends . Forthright without personal insults . Open & honest debate . This is the West . Where free speech rules ( just ! )
As a fan I would like Scottish teams to be allowed to play in the FA Cup. I think in the early editions of the FA Cup they were allowed.
Scottish League has been shite for 30 years
Your just uncultured
Whe is Simon Jordan saying 'Zip code'? Are we not in the UK?
Palace,it's a no brainer.
How can anyone with straight face say palace is a better job than Celtic! Straight up tripping!
It is. Go to Celtic, win the league a million times and then....what?
Brendan Rodgers left to go to Leicester because it’s a greater challenge and a step up.
@@welshed go to crystal palace and finish 14th every year and then what??
I’m an Ipswich fan, we’ve been terrible this year but put town in the SPL and they would finish third lol 😂 that’s how good the quality in it’s in the league is
Not with the same transfer budget and wage bill as livingston or hamilton
Thank u to the English pundits on platforms like this who have actually praised and recognised the job Steven Gerrard of winning the league in Scotland, stopping ten in a row. (Although 9 wasn't won on the park) no Scottish broadcasting BBC etc have recognised and praised the job Gerrard has done
WATP 🇬🇧
Villa have a more recent European cup win than Celtic, Nots Forrest have 2. Not sure that really has any bearing in the mind of a player or coach today signing for a club. I’m sure the size of the check and the quality of the opportunity hold far more weight that successes in the 60s
Bigger club is not even worth talking about but the better gig is Palace. The Prem is the reason why and not specifically Palace, Palace spent more money than Rangers & Celtic put together in the Summer because of the revenue of the Prem. Rodgers & Gerrard leaving Championship winning sides to rebuild a mid table Prem side says it all
Palace would slap both rangers and Celtic.😂😂😂😂😂😂 Zaha would look like ronaldinho.
@@eagle_rb_mmoomin_418 well I suppose that makes more sense that what Bournemouth did m8 spend all the money on players and get relegated? I didn't know selhurst park was being redeveloped to be honest with you but it is long overdue ain't it what is the capacity increase then m8?
Celtic and Rangers being bigger than Palace is irrelevent. Its probably more exciting to imagine the improvements you can make to an established Premier League side than to know you'll either be first or second in a league that doesn't have much interest to people outside of Scotland. Of course this topic will get a boring England v Scotland argument going but that's my opinion. Until there are credible alternatives to Celtic and Rangers, I don't think there's much of an argument to be had. There's a reason Neil Lennon was in charge of Celtic.
Neil Lennon done awful the last 6 months but one of the reasons he was in charge was beating Barcelona in European competition. The Scottish league is poorer but Scotlands coefficient is better now and that's down to European progress, Palace wouldn't have a sniff at Europe. 60k home fans each match compared to...?
According to Jim White's idiotic logic Eddie howe would be best taking the Nottingham forest job then
He is because forrest actually have history what is palace history 😂
