  • In this episode of A State of Sight, Isaac Porter, MD explains the vision correction options available for patients that are very nearsighted. Glasses and contact lenses are usually the first choice, but surgery can be considered for those who would like to reduce their dependance on glasses or contacts. The four primary choices that are covered are LASIK, PRK, cataract surgery, and lens implants.

Almost 30 with a -17 prescription for both eyes. The more options I see and weigh their risks the more content I feel with what I have. My retina detached when I was 18 and that was one of the scariest experiences I’ve ever had. I was operated upon in time thank god otherwise the damage would have been permanent... I can’t thank god enough for what I have... yes there are times when I feel overwhelmed by the myopia but I can’t imagine living with any of the complications mentioned here... may god project us all and help us appreciate what we have before we lose it

An interesting issue - at the threshold, and with steady motivation, a child wearing the plus - can be effective in prevention. This has worked. The eye (in a reading environment) goes down at a rate of -1/2 diopter per year. If, at 20/30, the person will continuously wear a +2.5 diopters - the refractive state remains at +1/2 diopter - and the problem is prevented. This is not a medical procedure, however. Depends totally on the person's motivation for success. Thanks!

I really wanted to get lasik or lens replacement surgery to correct my vision and ditch contacts/glasses but am now told I am not a candidate bc of the double vision. I am interested to know about the permanent surgery like PRK or LASIK. I know that my prescription has not changed for over 10 years even though I started wearing glasses since I was in grade 9. I am 38 years old. I am wondering about is there an age limit for the surgery? and how old is considered to be too old for that. My prescription is at -1.50 and with astigmatism of -1.00. I know I am still considered to be nearsighted but not really that bad. Mostly, I wear glasses but for some of my activity is better to be with contacts but not all. I believe my vision has also been affected by astigmatism as well.
Is PRK or LASIK can still be considered as one of the option? I am not worrying about the change of the prescription anymore because it has been stable for over 10 years. I am East Asian and I have noticing myopia is very common in my culture and even more common than any other culture.

Hello, my friends! Do you have any method in the world to cure high degenerative myopia, when I already don't have central vision in the right eye? In Poland they said me no, but maybe in the other countries you have something? I would be grateful to hear from you.

Hi I was wondering if there is any hope for me.. I have very myopia & astigmatism. my left eye is -17.00 & my right eye is -14.00. I'm feeling pretty hopeless. I worry that one day I will go blind. I know I won't be eligible for LASIK but will i be eligible for lens implants? I hope & pray I won't go blind.

@Expert 3rd Yeah I'm 16 and my vision is around -14 to -15 for my glasses and around -13.5 to -14 in soft contacts. I've been trying to look at my options but I know that it will be a while before I could be eligible for any ICL surgery. I've been looking into RGP contacts but idk if they would be a good option.

I'm a -10 in glasses, and a -9.0 in contacts, and in the later 40s. I used gas permeable contacts when they first came out. Then I switched to soft (silicon hydrogel) contacts which were miraculous. I was able to wear them a month at a time successfully for many years. However, about 6 years ago I started having a problem in my right eye that I'd describe as "like an astigmatism". While reading, every letter was scrambled, and doubled, with a faint copy of the letters doubling up behind them, causing severe annoyance in my right eye while reading. Covering part of my pupil on one side (like a pinhole) would cause the abbreviation to disappear, and the letters were razor sharp again. Sometimes, the aberrations were worse than at other times, for unknown reasons. As a result I recently switched back to gas permeable lens on a hunch there might be a chance they could correct the problem.
I found an eye doctor with experience in gas permeable lens, and asked to be fitted in them. During the exam I found that I have relatively mild astigmatism in both eyes: 1.25 in the left eye and 1.00 in the right eye (yet I only had severe reading problems with the right eye). So, whatever was going on in the right eye is an anomaly that hasn't been explained to me. I was refitted in gas permeable lens (Boston ES) and even though I had successfully worn them before, it was much more difficult to adjust to them than I had recalled.
For several days I had watering eyes, light sensitivity, extra inability to focus up close with both eyes, and it has a hazard for me to drive because I felt like i couldn't move my eyes around to monitor traffic, and I was constantly aware of the lens on my eye. After a few days the worst of the problems disappeared. Then after a couple of weeks I could tell that I was really adapting to them. The first month I felt like I needed to take them out and clean them after about 6 hours. Then after a couple of months I found that the comfort was actually better than my soft lenses, and after using the proper solutions and cleaning procedures and solutions (which I didn't do the first few day of wearing them)
Now these gas permeable lens stay crystal clean and clear for 15 or 16 hours a day I wear them, without eye-drops or middle-of-day cleaning like while adjusting to them. And I don't notice them on my eyes anymore and have full range of movement of my eyes; I'm no longer sensitive to light, and the problem of focusing up close disappeared. Most Important: the weird "astigmatism like" anomaly I had in my right eye is gone, and that was the entire reason I got refitted in gas-perm lenses!! So now I wish I would have switched back to gas-perms years ago when I started experiencing the problem in my Right Eye. These lenses stay clean far better than the old gas-perm lenses I had twenty years go.
Is there an explanation as to why I'm having much better vision with the gas permeable lens, especially in the Right Eye (even though the astigmatism is technically higher in the left eye) ??

Hello, Im in my mid teens and I have very high myopia, around -15 in my glasses and -13.5 in contacts. I've been considering RGP lenses because my current soft ones don't seem to give me the best vision as far as looking at a computer or reading text. I was just curious if you still recommend RGP lenses and how your visual acuity is with them?

Yes, you can cure your eyesight naturally. I've started to do so, and my eyesight has improved considerably over the last several months. Myopia is caused by axial elongation caused by hyperopic defocus. The process can be reversed if you develop the right habits.
