Every human goes through the same existential mania when they first arrive, making the timely appearance of the Companion critical as it gives them a friendly face to latch onto.

The air in the dungeon was thick, almost oppressive, as if the very walls themselves were alive with the power that surged from the artifact in Lumen’s grasp. The spherical jewel around his neck glowed with an eerie, pulsating light, casting long shadows across the stone floor. Burst stood alone at the edge of the vast chamber, his heart pounding in his chest as he watched his best friend-a friend who had always been by his side-stand before him, changed.
Lumen, no longer the excitable Riolu but a fully evolved Lucario, laughed-a cold, bitter sound that echoed through the chamber. His sharp blue fur glinted in the light, his eyes glowing with the power of the artifact. “You look nervous, Burst,” he said, his voice laced with mockery. “What’s wrong? Don’t you want to play?”
Burst flinched, his hooves shifting nervously on the stone floor. “Lumen, please…” he said, his voice trembling. “This isn’t you. You’re not like this.”
Lumen grinned, his fangs glinting. “Oh, but I am. You see, Burst, this is who I’ve always been. I’m not going to take over the world or anything ridiculous like that.” He shrugged, stepping closer, his presence overwhelming. “No, what I want is much simpler.” His eyes gleamed with a wild intensity. “I want to defeat you. Over and over. I want you to lose, and then come back to fight me again. I want our game to never end.”
    Burst’s heart sank. “That’s… that’s crazy!”
“Is it?” Lumen’s laugh was sharp, almost manic. “You’ll come back. You always do, don’t you? You’ve always been there, running alongside me, through every dungeon, every fight, every victory. You can’t leave me, Burst. You’ll never leave.”
Burst dodged as Lumen lunged, the Lucario’s paw glowing with a fierce energy as it sliced through the air. Burst barely managed to roll out of the way, his small, agile Tepig body moving on instinct. He had always been good at dodging-he never liked fighting. But Lumen’s power was overwhelming, and the sheer force behind each attack shook him to his core.
“Lumen, please!” Burst shouted, breathless. “This isn’t you! Think about all the friends we’ve made-Sableye, Fennekin, and all the others! We worked together, we fought together… You can’t just throw that away!”
Lumen’s eyes flickered for a moment, the glow of the artifact dimming slightly, but then he scowled and lashed out with another blast of energy. “I don’t need anyone!” he roared, but Burst caught the hesitation in his voice.
“You’re lying!” Burst called, dodging another attack, sweat dripping from his brow. “I know you, Lumen! You’re not alone, and you never have been! You gave me my name-you said it yourself. We’ve been through everything together. Doesn’t that mean anything?”
Lumen froze mid-attack, his eyes wide. “Our… friendship,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. He shook his head violently, as if trying to shake away the thought. “That’s why I’m doing this! You don’t get it, Burst!” His eyes blazed with desperation. “I told you my name-Lumen-when we first met. Do you know what that means for a Pokémon?”
Burst’s breath caught in his throat. “It… it meant we were connected.”
“Yes!” Lumen shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. “It meant I trusted you, more than anyone. And because of that trust, I was able to evolve into this. But what’s the point of evolving, of getting stronger, if it means losing you?” His voice broke. “When this is all over… you’re going back to the human world. And I’m going to be left here. Alone.”
Burst’s heart ached, his throat tightening at the raw pain in Lumen’s voice. “Lumen…”
Lumen clenched his fists, his entire body trembling. “I can’t lose you. Not like that. If you just let me win… if you keep coming back… we’ll never have to say goodbye.” His eyes glowed with wild desperation as he summoned a massive Aura Storm, the energy swirling around him with terrifying intensity. “Just let me win, Burst. Please!”
The storm of energy shot toward Burst, faster and more powerful than anything he had ever seen before. He braced himself, knowing he couldn’t dodge this time. But as the Aura Storm enveloped him, something strange happened. Instead of the crushing impact he expected, the energy seemed to swirl around him, like a gentle breeze. It wasn’t hurting him.
Lumen stared in shock as the storm dissipated, his mouth hanging open. “What…? Why didn’t it work?”
Burst’s eyes widened with sudden realization. “Your Aura…” he whispered. “It recognized mine.”
Lumen’s knees buckled, and he collapsed to the ground, the glowing power around him fading as the artifact dimmed. His form shimmered, the Mega Lucario transformation unraveling until he was just a regular Lucario again. He buried his face in his paws, his whole body shaking. “I… I’m so sorry,” he choked out, his voice breaking with sobs. “I’m so scared, Burst. I don’t want to be alone…”
Burst didn’t hesitate. He walked forward, his small hooves tapping gently against the stone floor, and wrapped his body around Lumen in a tight, comforting hug. The Lucario stiffened for a moment, then collapsed into Burst’s embrace, crying uncontrollably.
“You’re not alone, Lumen,” Burst whispered, his voice steady and full of warmth. “You’ll never be alone. I’m right here. And no matter what happens, we’ll always be best friends.”
Lumen sobbed into Burst’s fur, his arms wrapping around the Tepig in return. For a long moment, they stayed like that, the weight of the dungeon, the artifact, and all the battles they had fought fading into the background. In that moment, nothing mattered except the bond between them-a bond that could never be broken.
“I’m so sorry,” Lumen whispered again, his voice hoarse from crying. “I didn’t want to hurt you. I just… I didn’t know what else to do.”
Burst shook his head, pulling back just enough to look Lumen in the eyes. “You don’t have to apologize. We’ll figure this out together, just like we always have.”
Lumen sniffled, wiping his eyes with the back of his paw. “I don’t deserve you, Burst. You’re too good for me.”
Burst smiled softly. “That’s not true. We’re a team, remember? We need each other.”
Lumen smiled through his tears, the first genuine smile Burst had seen from him in what felt like forever. “Yeah… a team. Always.”
Together, they stood, side by side once more, the artifact’s glow now a faint whisper of the power it once held. It wasn’t the artifact or the quest that mattered now. It was their friendship-stronger than any force in the world.
And as they walked together toward the light at the end of the dungeon, Burst knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. Because some bonds, like theirs, were unbreakable.

I regret how there are so many epic PMD fan comics, many with very interesting and unique concepts (one has the human NOT run into their Companion right away, and is treated like a hobo, the comic stopped being made right when he DOES meet his Companion), and yet.. none ever seem to reach a finale. Here's hoping this one breaks the trend.

    -Is the Pokémon World indanger!?
-Why are fake Pokémon back?/ Is Dark Matter back?!
-Why can't Burst remember his human name?
    -Why is Lumen so cool?

so names are a real big deal (i noticed that a lot among the monsters in japanese media come to think of it) and being given a name, or giving yours is apparently just below marriage in how serious it is.

"how could anyone wish for something like the end of the world?" Did Riolu wish for the human which would ultimately cause the end of the world (as everything would be thrown out of balance again) or did he only wish as he head the stories and wanted to be a hero duo instead of just the strength to see it through like Dewott said?
