SOME Common Ingredients/Keywords to look for Proteins in ingredient lists: Hydrolyzed, Keratin, Protein, Soy, Oat, Quinoa, Rice Gelatin, Collagen, Amino Acids, Silk Protein, Wheat Protein, Vegetable Protein
I actually looked up protein treatments, the best one is called ApHogee keratin 2 minute reconstructor (AMAZING!). I use this weekly, then every 6 weeks i use ApHogee 2 step protein treatment ( HIGHLY RECOMMEND!😍). I use a moisterising shamppo and conditioner - ausie brand, and ogx hair oil to keep the moisture and protein balance. My hair is so healthy now and have tighter curls! 🥰🥰🥰
I'm new to this, but the Woman to Woman spray doesn't mention any of the ingredients you have listed. A lot of oils though which would weigh down my fine and thin hair. Any other leave in /refresh suggestions? Can I dilute a protein/moisture deep conditioner with water and put it in a mister?
I had grandkids by all weekend, so Monday I told hubby I had the flu and stayed in bed & watched Janelle videos all day and wow did my wavy hair turn our curly today! I stopped "raking thru"my hair, great tip!! Thanks!!
Thanks for the clearly explained test. My hair stretches sooooo crazy and I didn't know thats what that meant. I've only been curly girl a month so its a learning curve.
okay i have no idea how i have JUST discovered your channel after being on my curly journey for 2 years now but SHIIIITTT. i almost regret it because my wallet is about to suffer. but you make me really excited and hopeful to get my curls back!! i've yet to find a low porosity curly/wavy gal so all my videos i watch are all women with way different hair types. im low porosity and a 2b/2c wavy/curly so i've been watching your videos nonstop today lmao. thank youuuuuu and im so excited to try some of your recommended products!
Grace Brozka same here!!! My hair was blonde and the blonde is all gone and I’m still struggling with my curls. I have 2c/3a hair and my hair has not been curling and it’s been brittle and dry. I’ve just learned I have low porosity hair and I’m so glad I’ve found her!
I came here because my hair stretched and bounced back, and wouldn’t break! I tried over and over, and it wouldn’t break. I thought it was a break test, and I had to figure out based on how it broke. But I think that means I am balanced! THANK YOU!
LOVED this video! When I bleach damaged my hair from sun-in (so dumb 🤦) my hair would stretch and stretch forever and I had no idea what to do about it. Now I know I needed protein! Your explanation was a million times helpful!
This is SO helpful! Thanks for always bringing your warm personality and clear explanations. I also appreciate seeing examples of products you like. Thanks, Jannelle!
Needed this video badly. No matter how many videos ive seen, I still don't really know if i have high or low porosity hair, so can't wait for that video. I kinda have stringy stretched curls in places and some that are also kinda hard and dry with breakage so... ahhh. Water also completely beads on my hair yet its color treated and dry. My hair doesnt know what it is. I'll figure it out eventually im sure x
I'm still putting that video together but if water is beading up on your hair its likely normal or low porosity. Also, does it take a long time to dry. If yes=low porosity if no=high porosity! Also, have you clarified recently? Sometimes buildup/hard water build up can act the same way!
I needed this video so much. I will be doing the test today. I have high porosity hair but i am transitioning so that is expected. I have been trying to understand the protein issues with hair but just haven't understood it. You explained it so well. Thank you so much.
After 17 years of using the hot iron every week to straighten my hair, I'm now 6 months transitioning, but my hair still doesn't want to curl entirely, it's straight/wavy. I assumed that with all that heat damage I should be high porosity, but so far all the tests I've done like a hair in a bowl of water etc result low porosity. Plus my hair takes 4-5 hours to a air dry after washing. What I do know for sure is that my hair is medium-thick, it is definitely not thin, plus I've got a lot of hair, thick density. So the protein part I haven't really figured out yet. But this I do know for sure, I once a week deep condition with the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil deep conditioner and my hair seems to love that. Best hair day the entire week! But then the curls don't last long, day 2 or 3 it's almost straight again. I have to admit though that when I first bought CG products, and I bought a lot, I didn't really give much thought to ingredients. Now looking at the ingredients listed, they all seem to have a lot of proteins in them and pretty high up in the list ha ha ha... I don't know if that's good or bad. But one thing I have figured out is this: I just started on a As I am gel and I've discovered that I've been scared of using too much product, since I've been experiencing product build up easily (like my hair feels stick and greasy easily) but on the other hand when I didn't use enough of this product my curls (which are more waves at the moment) wouldn't hold as long. But now when I used more of the gel I could at least get a 2nd day of wavy hair before it turns straight. Sounds a bit contradicting all doesn't it?
Its not easy getting to the bottom of our hair needs. I've found that when my hair is super moisturized like borderline too much it lays flatter. Also when I have too much product. But that could also be from product build up. Do you ever clarify your hair? I personally find it important to do once a month or so to ensure my hair is free of other products and essentially a clean slate.
@@JannelleOShaughnessyThank you for replying. I honestly don't strictly co-wash only, once a week I use a sulfate free shampoo. But every now and then, like once every 4-6 weeks I admit I do use a shampoo with sulfate, just to make sure. But there might be something to what you say maybe the products I use are too much or too heavy for me. I use Shea Moisture products and someone did say something like that once before to me. Hmm, I'll have to try something else to know the difference, right?
Mon Soymon I’ll bet it’s the Shea butter! Shea is so heavy, it weighs my hair down like crazy even when only using a small amount! Check out my last video on my favorite products, all are really lightweight!!! ❤️❤️❤️

If your interested in figuring out your curl pattern you should research and try out the curly girl method. I'm shocked only a month and a week in and my curls have sprung up so much. I literally cant wait to see how much curlier my hair will become. I thought I had frizzy wavey curls my whole life, meanwhile I'm now sporting a head full of ringlets. Also heat and curls dont mix flat irons blow drying and over manipulating the hair can also cause you to loose curl pattern. Anyways I hope this helps. You might be sitting right now with the hair of your dreams and not even know it.
@@rachellep2581 lol, I've actually been on the curly girl method for several months now. I think I started about a month or so after I posted this. @@suzylove6502 yay!, im so happy to hear this. I had a feeling you were curly lol. Also their are allot of rules with the CGM as you know. I wanted to mention that if your scalp gets itchy or doesnt feel clean. Then I recommend you using a sulfate shampoo once a month and follow with a deep conditioner. I am a hairstylist and the only thing I see wrong with the CGM is that hair flurishes while scalp goes to hell with build up. Our scalp is getting too much oil, product and moisture. This in end causes blocked hair follicules that equal hair loss 😱. In my experience my scalp went crazy third week in. I tried vinegar rinse and etc nothing natural worked. I feel allot of people are putting up with scalp issues because their hair looks good and they dont want to break any rules. However a unhealthy scalp equals unhealthy hair. Couldn’t find this in one of your videos or I totally could have missed it. How do you deal with day 2 and 3 day hair? Products? Tips and tricks? Super helpful video by the way!
very helpful info...i've never used protein treatments bc i got scared off when i heard some people's hair got really messed up from using Aphogee Protein Treatments...it made me feel like they were all harmful...so maybe i'll try one of the products with protein in it rather than just a straight up protein treatment...
How can you tell if a product has a small, medium, or large amount of protein? I’d love to see a video not just on your favorite stylers that contain protein but maybe what ingredients to look out for when looking for products with a lot of protein - or at times maybe when you’re trying to avoid protein just what ingredients to keep an eye on. Loved this video!! I’ve been learning lately that my hair is really in need of protein and not sure if it’s because I’ve already used coconut oil and it’s just overly moisturized so your video came at the perfect time for me. Loved it!
Nicole Sweiss all you need to do is see where on the ingredients list the protein is. If it's in the first few lines, it's high in protein, if it's in the middle of the list, it's medium. Any lower than that, it's relatively low.
I mean, I know my hair needs moisture, that's for sure. When I do the hair strand test my hair snaps easily, I've read that it might also have a protein overload... How do I know if I should use proteins or not? I'm going to explain; My hair hasn't looked good in a looong time. My hair is very fine (scandinavian) and hightlighted, so it's probably medium/high porosity in the ends. Closer to my scalp it's probably low/medium porosity. I've been washing my hair with a schampoo that has dried it out, and since my hair is fine+bleached I suppose it could have also stripped protein out from the core. My logic therefore tells me that my hair would need both moisture AND protein because of the 1) lack of moisture 2) thin core of the strands 3) the schampoo might have stripped out proteins Or am I wrong? But then, my hair products have contained a little protein, so it could potentially be protein overloaded - but how do I know?
An advice? I have signs of both. My hair is shiny, limp and won't hold a curl, but if I pull a dry Piece it instantly snaps. While it's wet, it bounces nicely and doesn't break
Thanks so much Janelle for all the information and the videos regarding maintaining the curls! It's very informative and encouraging....I have finally decided to stop ironing my hair and leave it as natural. Thanks again.... Keep doing good work like this.. very motivating 😄🤗🤗
Have you ever heard of L.U.S. curl products. I just bought them trying to repair my hair. They helped a little bit but ifs still struggling. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the product. I think my hair might need protien. So glad to have found your channel.
My hair is low porosity, it streches out and snaps, but at the same time it breaks while it's dry, I find hair everywhere, some from the root some not.
I wanted a lighter red and of course it only deposits color and it was getting quite dark but very pretty. I'm 45 and really pale and it left me looking a bit harsh. So thickening and curl enhancing though. I used Light Mountain Henna off Amazon and loved it. So inexpensive too!
Tammie Hammett ahhh that makes sense! I’ve considered trying it for the thickening benefits! Especially in the winter! How long before you noticed fading?
This stuff does NOT fade. It has to grow out. I used it almost a year monthly because it made it so thick. So good for your hair if you do well with protein. It's a time consuming process though but if you're always freaked at putting chemicals on your head this is a wonderful option.
Tammie Hammett I’ve hesitated because I am a lazy curly and because I love my grays lol. Kind of glad now knowing I’d have to grow it out. What a wonderful option though!!!!
I love love love your channel. I am just beginning my curly hair journey and love all your tips. Unrelated to hair but I love your nail color. Would you mind sharing what color that is and if they are the dipping powder color. Thank you.
When i used to dye/bleach my hair alot there was one time when i bleached it twice in one sitting(dont ever do that) and it was soooo mushy. But it was crunchy too, it felt like Doritos.
Amazing explanation!!! I was always confused with other explanations about when I needed protein or moisture but yours was so clear and simple to understand. Thank you for this video! 💕🤗🙌🏼👏🏼
I wanna know too! Prettiest hair we've ever seen on you! Also, I love love love your more natural makeup. You are naturally beautiful and sometimes your deep colored eyeshadows are distracting.
Have you tried using a DIY gelatin protein treatment? Supposedly it’s like using the Aphogee protein treatment. Just make sure to do a deep conditioning afterwards. There are a lot of videos on it, but I’ve not tried it yet since I just did a different protein treatment, but I’m going to try it next.
We Are Legion I haven’t personally tried it but have heard excellent things as well. I tend to lean towards the lazier side of hair care 😂 so getting to diys doesn’t always happen
@We Are Legion - I just did one yesterday! I've never done a protein mask and have spent so many years trying to avoid protein so it took me AGES to understand that my hair was over conditioned. It felt so soft and smooth, which are words many natural curlies use as words to describe their goals when they have coarse and high porosity hair. My hair was badly needing protein so I used a whole packet of unflavored gelatin (ended up being about 1 3/4 TBS) in about a cup of distilled water with 1/2 tap of apple cider vinegar. Squirted it on damp clarified hair with the moisture squeezed out, applying in sections. Just dribbled it on in cooled liquid form because I couldn't wait longer. Left it on just a few minutes, maybe 3-4. Never felt particularly hard but felt almost waxy or slightly straw-like but rinsed out pretty easily. Used Deva One Condition to co-wash the ends and left it on as a normal condish, not a deep condish. Styled as usual with a leave-in with protein I only use sometimes, but no additional protein. Curls are much healthier, firmer, a bit tighter, curling further up the shaft, and the frizz looks more even around my hair in a good-for-volume kind of way rather than a hair-is-shattered-all-over type way. Most importantly my curls definitely stayed stronger all day, and sort of lasted overnight. Will try a treatment again in a few weeks to see how it helps! Now I know the signs of over conditioning and have learned the importance of researching the same topic in lots of different settings because there really are so many different curly needs and approaches that it might take you hearing the same idea in lot of different contexts to fully understand what your situation may be.
Hi, I just found your video (very helpful) but I still have a question, can hair need protein AND moisture at the same time ? I have damaged hair because of chemical treatments, and with what you describe it seems that I need both.. Are there products that do both please ? Thanks, really appreciate your content 😊
good job there with the video, i found the same. when i do rice water rinses it feels like its too much protein for me and leaves my hair stringy but when I use bounce curl for styling i get the best results :)
Hi, i love your videos! Im really struggling with my hair protein test. I took a strand (fine like yours), stretched it and waited for it to shrink back, it did very quickly, but only the part where it was stretched. It sprung super curly (like you would do when you run scissors along paper). Although, it didnt look healthy when it did. It was more like a zig-zag scribble and smooth at the ends..? Im confused what this means. I know im not explaining it right, but i hope you understand what i mean lol. It looks really weak though. In your video, you explained in the protein test, if you strech it then it slowly shrinks back- perfect balance. If you stretch it, it doesnt shrink back or it snaps, then you need protein. So you can understand how im confused lol. X
All those mentioned hair sensations are so unfamiliar to me I don't even know what to look/touch for... maybe because English isn't my first language. I guess I'm just gonna go by the instinct and visual effects.
I don’t have curly hair, but I have very fine apparently low porosity hair. I can NEVER keep a curl long. I use heat once a month. My hair has no volume and very straight. I’m trying to grow it waist length. Several questions: 1. Is rice water good for my hair? 2. What can u use to thicken it up? 3. How often should I deep condition?
How can I tell if it’s stretching or not? I pull and it snaps pretty quick....I think it stretches a little bit first but I can’t tell if it bounces back? I have very fine natural blonde hair and it’s extremely hard to see (think like half the diameter of a transparent fishing line...lol). I have been doing some masks with protein and moisture. Any suggestions on how to tell if your hair is crunchy from lack of moisture or protein overload?
These signs all seems to be more on the extreme side of protein requirement. What if your hair isn't that damaged but it still needs a bit of a boost? What are some more subtle signs?
I typically go back and forth. I tend to wash every 5 to 7 days and will do one washday with more moisture based and the next using proteins. I don’t explicitly stick to that but it seems to be my pattern.
Hey! At fist I want to say that the video is really helpful, thanks! But I always struggle to find a really good protein treatment because I live in Germany and all of the products that you mention like devacurl, bouncecurl etc. are really hard get here. And even if I want to order something online or even at amazon the shipping costs are horrendous because it comes from the USA... But I really like to do a rice rinse from time to time because it’s really easy. Do you know any other “protein Diy’s”?
Rice water rinses are the best DIY protein. Next option could be an oatmeal rinse but I’m not positive that the molecules are able to penetrate the hair shaft. Regardless it doesn’t have to be product specific, just find whatever product type you want with proteins in it and try it out!
Diy: Gelatinekur, Reisrinse, oder extra Seiden- oder Weitenproteine zu deinen Produkten dazumischen. In Stores e.g. Balea Professional oil repair schwerelos condi or/and mask

very helpful info...i've never used protein treatments bc i got scared off when i heard some people's hair got really messed up from using Aphogee Protein Treatments...it made me feel like they were all harmful...so maybe i'll try one of the products with protein in it rather than just a straight up protein treatment...
Livi nailed it! Where they are located on the ingredient list and also if there is more than one protein listed is the best guide!
Jannelle O'Shaughnessy Engels I didn't even think about more than 1 protein being listed, good point!
I really can't stop looking at your eyes their so beautiful
THANK YOU!!!
I mean, I know my hair needs moisture, that's for sure. When I do the hair strand test my hair snaps easily, I've read that it might also have a protein overload... How do I know if I should use proteins or not?
I'm going to explain;
My hair hasn't looked good in a looong time.
My logic therefore tells me that my hair would need both moisture AND protein because of the 1) lack of moisture 2) thin core of the strands 3) the schampoo might have stripped out proteins
Or am I wrong?
But then, my hair products have contained a little protein, so it could potentially be protein overloaded - but how do I know?
Great video! I’m new to the CGM! But not to dog mom life lol! 😂 I also have an English bulldog and the shedding is real!
Great explanation - thanks!
You have the same exact hair texture that I have. Totally following!
An advice? I have signs of both. My hair is shiny, limp and won't hold a curl, but if I pull a dry
Piece it instantly snaps.
While it's wet, it bounces nicely and doesn't break
This is exactly what I needed! I definitely need protein for my curly mop. Thank you so much! And you are adorable! ✌🏼️😇
your puppy! oh my goodness 💜💜💜
gummy and sticky would make me think it's time for a good chelating shampoo to get hair products and hard water build-up off
Love this! Thank you! Bringin' the curls back!
Ooh please tell me your nail varnish polish colour x
Very helpful!! I have the same hair!! Very lowP. I'm going to check this protein test! My fav products are devacurl!
This has nothing to do with hair but what nail Polish are you wearing on this video? I love the colour. X
ThankYOU for this, oh so helpful visual, now I get it!! 😊 Love your energy!
Thanks so much Janelle for all the information and the videos regarding maintaining the curls! It's very informative and encouraging....I have finally decided to stop ironing my hair and leave it as natural. Thanks again.... Keep doing good work like this.. very motivating 😄🤗🤗
💗💗🐶🐾🥰Love the pups and the info!!
Thank you useful content. Now could you help with dry frizzy hormonal hair and adding just moisture no protein!? X
Have you ever heard of L.U.S. curl products. I just bought them trying to repair my hair. They helped a little bit but ifs still struggling. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the product. I think my hair might need protien. So glad to have found your channel.
Thank you! Recently I wandered how can I understand that I need to use mask. 😀 You gave me the answer! 👌🏻
Very helpful. Thank you!
My hair is low porosity, it streches out and snaps, but at the same time it breaks while it's dry, I find hair everywhere, some from the root some not.
Thank you for explaining this! I was wondering what all this meant!
Hey.. love your curls!!
This was SO HELPFUL! Thank you 💙
I finally understand the stretch test!!!! Thank you!!!
Ur hair is so lovely and so are you 😍😍😍
I think this is my problem. When I was using Henna my hair was SO curly and now that I'm using a chemical dye it's just not as curly.
Ive heard henna does wonders for curls! What made you switch?!
Thank you.
Thank you so much for the love. I LOVE having you here. My nails are gel polish that I picked out at the salon!
Your curls are perfect 😍
When i used to dye/bleach my hair alot there was one time when i bleached it twice in one sitting(dont ever do that) and it was soooo mushy. But it was crunchy too, it felt like Doritos.
OMG that’s what I need I didnt know what the hell is going on with my hair thank you so much
She is sooo damn good!
Really helpful video! Love your pup(s) being included too :) xo Oh, and meant to ask if you've ever tried rice water?
I have not. I avoid my kitchen at most costs haha but one of these days i'll make it!
Amazing explanation!!! I was always confused with other explanations about when I needed protein or moisture but yours was so clear and simple to understand. Thank you for this video! 💕🤗🙌🏼👏🏼
Your hair always looks amazing but im not sure ive ever seen it with such perfect ringlets like that all over the bottom! Did you change your routine?
elizhope I agree! Those curls are amazing! 😍
Dang! More ringlets than ever before!! I wanna know, too, if it’s a new product or more frequent protein trtmnts? What’s the scoop?
I wanna know too! Prettiest hair we've ever seen on you! Also, I love love love your more natural makeup. You are naturally beautiful and sometimes your deep colored eyeshadows are distracting.
Me too!!! Gorgeous!!!
Yeees 😍😍😍
Now I know the signs of over conditioning and have learned the importance of researching the same topic in lots of different settings because there really are so many different curly needs and approaches that it might take you hearing the same idea in lot of different contexts to fully understand what your situation may be.
thanks
Love your voice!
Hi,
I just found your video (very helpful) but I still have a question, can hair need protein AND moisture at the same time ?
I have damaged hair because of chemical treatments, and with what you describe it seems that I need both.. Are there products that do both please ?
Thanks, really appreciate your content 😊
Very well explained, thank you! :)
good job there with the video, i found the same. when i do rice water rinses it feels like its too much protein for me and leaves my hair stringy but when I use bounce curl for styling i get the best results :)
rice water rinse??
Same problem here
Mine snapped and did the same
This was so helpful omg thank you
All those mentioned hair sensations are so unfamiliar to me I don't even know what to look/touch for... maybe because English isn't my first language.
3. How often should I deep condition?
aaawwwww your dog is sooooo sweet
Very helpful...thank you.
@lina330 protein always confuses me!! Do I need it do I not! 🤦🏽♀️
Hermosa tu mascota. Tu cabello preciosisimo. Saludos COLOMBIA
These signs all seems to be more on the extreme side of protein requirement. What if your hair isn't that damaged but it still needs a bit of a boost? What are some more subtle signs?
Less definition, curls or stretched out more then normal!
@theotherlagirl - love this vid. Thank you!
Sooooo pretty
Is it possible to need both protein and moisture?
YES!
Do you usually avoid proteins until you need them? I don't know if I've ever heard you explicitly say!
Leinsamengel!
Diy: Gelatinekur, Reisrinse, oder extra Seiden- oder Weitenproteine zu deinen Produkten dazumischen. In Stores e.g. Balea Professional oil repair schwerelos condi or/and mask
What protein u mean ? The protein i know is a hair stengthening treatment
