I have a love hate relationship with this game. This was one of the first RPGs I ever played as I wasn't really into RPGs at the time. I got lost when I was like 1/3 through the game and gave up. Was also frustrated with too many random encounters. The grind in the beginning can get a bit unberable. Sometimes the isometric overhead view can obscure some pathways which makes it frustrating to navigate, especially when you have to grind. But I picked it up a few years later after playing other RPGs, and I loved it. The story doesn't get good until late in the game. If you want the full story, you need to get the side/secret characters in your team. The end definitely leaves you wanting a sequel. The attacks get super flashy and you can actually see your characters kind of grow/change and wear different outfits and weapons. As the reviewer said, once you learn the game quirks, it's actually quite enjoyable. One thing I wished, however, was that the overworld / generic town music would change more often.
I understand he's trying to say you shouldn't judge a game by its popularity, but he's trying to compare two games that came out years apart. I like BtB but everything about it was generic rpg. He's also wrong about Suikoden II. It got great reviews but it wasn't a well known game at the time.
Personally, I find it absolutely baffling that anyone could argue that BtB is better than Suikoden 2... I don't think S2 received the better score because it was made by Konami, I think it was lauded because it was superior in every conceivable way, and one the very best RPGs of the golden era. I tried BtB because the battle graphics reminded me of Suikoden, but I found the game excruciating. In my opinion the exploration is clunky, the music is forgettable, the character portraits don't marry up with how the characters look in battles, etc. To summarise: one of the worst RPGs I've played to date, and the poor reviews the game received are no mystery to me...
s2 great story but once u beat it , games like byb can be funner especially if u havent played em yet, its cool action, doesnt need to be super fast paced, if it did id play starcraft or somethin
I get the point you're trying to make; that "Beyond the Beyond" is perhaps better than its review scores indicate.... but "Beyond the Beyond" better than "Suikoden II"? good grief no.
lmao agreed. comparing this game to Suikoden 2 is like... comparing FFMQ to FF3(FF6) or Chrono Trigger on the snes. Its NOT a bad game...but there are games out there far better.
This game came out int he PS1 era, which is quite possibly the golden era of Jrpgs. Its probably as decent game, but I could see why it would be not so praised
As others have pointed out, Camelot has made some all-time classics, like Shining in the Darkness/Force/Wisdom and the Golden Sun games. The GBA Mario Golf/Tennis games were pretty neat too.
ILikeBulletZ vitality points. Vitality is still a valid stat in modern games :P i still have mystic quest for the snes and you dont even get a number value. There is a giant yellow bar and smaller yellow bars. You just heal for the sake of it lol.
Great PS1 memories. I stumbled across Beyond the beyond shorty after it released. It's one of those games that didn't review well and has its flaws but is still enjoyable. I think I beat it at least 3 or 4 times. I've played hundreds of games since, yet it's one of those that still stands out in my mind for some reason.
Now, I will admit the Beyond the Beyond was a damn good game that deserved to be treated better when it launched (I had it)....but better that Suck 2?! No freaking way man. Luca Blight by himself makes the game truly epic. It is one of the greatest JRPG's of all times. The 108 characters, three different types of battles, and the intertwining story arch was just amazing.
Beyond the Beyond is bettere than Suikoden 2? What the actual fuck? I played both those games around the time they came out, and even back in the day Beyond the Beyond was a clusterfuck of illogical bullshit. Suikoden 2, on the other hand, still has one of the most grounded stories in any RPG and its art still holds up because it's a masterpiece of old school spritework.
Forever going to be my favorite video game. First game I remember playing as a kid, have owned my disk since my mom got it in 1995 to play for herself.. When I was born.
K K the most unfair comparison ever lol. In suikoden you literally could reset the game until you won the highest dice roll and buy max upgrades. 108 playable characters. I mean it is like comparing kobe beef to your dads homemade beef jerky.
This was my first RPG when i got my PS1. And it was an amazing experience. Yes it is pretty basic compared to later RPGs but what little it had, it was done well. It had challenging puzzles, amazing sound/music, decent story, inyeresting characters. I was puzzled back in the day why mosy reviews said that it was mediocre.
This and 7th Saga on SNES are both underrated. And both have fast Mode 7 battles and fantastic music and simple but straight forward ruleset. Also both are for people who wont mind some grinding every now and then. Both also have pretty good replay value as there is at least something else to see in future play through.
I love this game. I really need to replay it. When I was younger, I gave up AFTER reaching Simone Village because how to proceed is very vague at that point. It wasn't until middle school that I actually figured out everything that needed to be done with Samson. As for puzzles, it helps to draw maps in certain areas. The Isle of Discipline is one of those places as well as counting your steps in the Sand Caves. For the Isle of Discipline, DRAW THE SHAPES AND COUNT WITH YOUR FINGER. It will make proceeding much easier. All in all, a great game and worth playing.
Yeah, I was unaware that the folks that made this also made one of my favorite series of all time, Shining Force. They also made Golden Sun, which is also amazing. I loved Beyond the Beyond. I loved the art style, the soundtrack, and just the overall gameplay felt great. I would LOVE to see this get a remaster (not remake, just cleaned up) and put on Switch. Would love to have this on the go.
SHINING FORCE played it in 1993 when i was 6 years old. god level game. golden sun: god level. now they make mario sports games, which are solid and fun...but people want rpgs.
Edit: Good review, hits some important points. - Comparing this game to Suikoden ii and saying no one knows Shining Force, i feel like we're talking to new gamers born in 2000 (this game Beyond the Beyond came out in 1996). These games are classics. Changers of the industry- and we dismiss them.
Yea this dude is clueless. I’m assuming he doesn’t like narrative driven games, but even so, every aspect of Suikoden 2 is better than what Beyond the Beyond has to offer. During the golden age nobody cared what company made a jrpg (excluding squaresoft) if it was good it was good and every new jrpg was an invitation to an amazing adventure, or to a generic story and a poorly designed slog of a game. (anyone remember Quest 64 lol? Did it get high ratings because it was Nintendo?)
I love BTB. The game is very difficult once you reach Zalagoon and progressing too fast without grinding at that point is where most people give up. It’s true also that one key item (Moon Crescent) wasn’t touched on much such as where to find it. If I recall, two or three npcs mention it but not its location or intended use. But I also wouldn’t recommend getting it right away… grinding is very important in this game especially since that entire continent introduces spell casting enemies that will make short work of your team.
I have drawn a freaking huge map for the dungeon and completed this game. The torture is insane. Battle every 3 step. It's sadistic. I have never play any other RPG which is so torturous.
I was like: This game looks like Shining Force series, why i've never played it? Then turns out it's Camelot Software who actually made Shining force series, now i'm in search of this game.
I purchased Beyond the Beyond over Suikoden 1 because the former had way better box art back when it was released (which was a mistake...I was 12)....I sold Beyond the Beyond to buy Suikoden 1 shortly after beating Beyond... A classic it is not. Beyond the Beyond: Unoriginal/clichéd story, battles suck (spam X for increased damage?), graphics (two frames of animation for attacks in battle?, or how the characters emote by vibrating), annoying puzzles. The game just doesn't feel balanced; the high encounter rate combined with lengthy battles and lengthy dungeons is a poor combination...the game is unpolished and frustrating. It could have been Golden Sun quality with more time in the oven. I wanted to love this game. Music and artwork were my favorite aspects. Suikoden II: Beautiful sprites (prolly one of the best on the PSX), gorgeous music, excellent cast of characters and development (your characters are way more expressive, plus Flik and Victor are amazing in both games, gotta collect them all), interesting heart-wrenching storyline (especially for its time), import your character from the first game (new for its time). Quick and fun battles with impressive animations, team combos. Suikoden I and II were, simply put, way more fun, polished experience with high replay value.
Old video I know but I still felt compelled to ask have you really not heard of Camelot software? Aka Sonic software planning. They were a pretty big rpg developer studio in the 90s making games like shining force/darkness series, golden sun, and like you mentioned a lot of the rpg sport Mario games. Maybe I missed the sarcasm.
Just wondering how far you've actually got in this game? In the video it looks like you've only passed the first two dungeons based on the locations and you said nothing about being able to swap between characters or class change when you get late into the game, including two characters that you can completely miss(one is permanent.) I mean, since you decided to mention Suikoden 2 in your review I took a look at it and you really mentioned very little about it. The review was a whole bunch of nothing. You mentioned unite attacks, you mentioned the shopkeeping system, you said literally a couple words about the strategy battles.... and, well, that's it. You went on for such a long time about how there are unite attacks that hit all enemies without putting any detail in what makes this game better or worse in your opinion. With as little detail as you gave on both reviews, who are you to really criticize journalists back in the day with what you stated as praising one RPG while criticizing another with no reason as to why? I myself would state that Beyond the Beyond is a better game to play through than Suikoden 2 because Suikoden 2 is too easy to play on auto pilot. I even have a full run of the original Suikoden, all 108 stars,, that's an even easier of a game, but both games other than gameplay are better in every way than Beyond the Beyond. You should atleast put forth the effort to state what Beyond the Beyond does well over the games, not just stating that the basic stats are better, state that grinding is fun, and then criticize the game before you end your review, a review that I'm certain was written long before you reached even a third of the way into the game.
I completely agree. Suikoden got the good reviews mainly praising the story and that it was something anyone could play without prior knowledge of RPGs. Beyond the Beyond got slammed for how needlessly grindy it was and that the story was pretty boring and predictable. I like both games and played both just recently. His review sounded like a hate filled rant to me.
I have a soft spot for this game. It was basically the only 2D traditional turn based RPG on the PSX that was available in North America when it released at the time. It arrived before Suikoden 1 and long before Suikoden 2. We didn't have Lunar Silver Star Story at that time either. It was decent enough but the encounter rates were far to high and some of the dungeons are fairly annoying.
I used to play this game. It was grindy, but I was an old school rpger so I actually liked it at the time, and the music was really good so it made the grind more bearable. But man did it piss me off because it was the only RPG where I actually found myself in an unwinnable state. I entered one of the dungeons too early. The enemies were way too powerful for me but I had gone too deep and had to use a magic rope get out of it without my party wiping. Unfortunately I had flipped a switch that removed a bridge near the entrance that couldn't be unflipped from the other side. The dungeon didn't reset after I warped out so there was no way i could complete the dungeon from then on. But I hadn't realized that until the time came for me to go back and complete that dungeon in order to progress through the story. Sadly, by that point I was like 60 hours into the game and had no save from before I first entered the dungeon (which was like 40 hours earlier anyway) so I just gave up rather than start over. Unwinnable states in adventure games I can forgive because you can usually move through them quickly when you know the solutions to the puzzles. But in really long and grindy RPGs? There's no excuse.
Beyond the beyond is in no way better than suikoden 2. There is plenty to hate about this game. Insane amount of random battles. Incredibly challenging puzzles that require so much back and forth. Alot of backtracking. Not very memorable heroes. The story is great and I do love the simplicity
As someone who grew up on Shining games this is kind of weird. It has the GUI of the later Shining games, and some of the graphics, but also much of the 2d sprites that are more reminiscent of the graphics on the Megadrive Shining games.
I've always wanted to play this game because I thought it looked a lot like Shining Force which I love, and after watching this I found out it was made by the same people. FF7 is my favorite RPG but I almost think it would have been better if the graphics looked exactly like this game.
I love this game, but I really hate the saving mechanics, and the menu controls on this game, I hate travelling in a far area and have to go back to a town just to save, added to that the amount of enemy encounters, which makes exploring very frustating, now I just play it in an emulator so I can save anywhere I want, making the game less of a hassle..
This game was very basic but I enjoyed it, sort of... but serious technical issues killed it for me. I tried to make it through this game like 5 times when I was a kid, and literally every time I got halfway to 2/3 of the way through the game, I'd boot it up next time to "Data's Been Destroyed!" savegame error. I tried multiple memory cards, copying saved games, etc, but it ALWAYS happened before I could actually finish the game. The only other person I know personally that played this game had the same issue, so its not just me, but I don't see much about it online so maybe I was just incredibly unlucky? I dunno, but its the first thing to come to mind every time I think of this game.
'This game is simple why did reviews pan it' Character development was shit. Encounter rate was over tuned. Game system doesn't offer much reward to compensate for its shortcomings. Doesn't have good fundamentals. Contrast with Climax's previous work, like Shining Force, or Landstalker, and it's obvious their creative force left for Matrix Software and the remainder that formed Camelot was just resting in their laurels.
I remember this game when it came out, it was like one of the first RPG's for the PS, I think I disliked it cuz I just played FF6 and Chrono Trigger and those games blew my mind and then I tried this was bored to death. Yet I can't forget the title and it doesn't look as ugly as my nostalgic memory remembers it as at least lol.
Lots of times I’ll play RPGs to GET AWAY from puzzles yet some really good devs sometimes incorporate them into their games.. They especially don’t mix well with random encounters imo but to each their own.. The Golden Sun trilogy is probably really good if you got the time to play it..
Damn I’m seriously missing out on this game BIG shining fan Shining force legacy of great intention Shining force 2 Shining force gaiden 1,2,3 Shining force 3 with the English translation roms Shining force CD Shining the holy ark Shining in the darkness And golden sun 1 and 2 But this shit looks amazing And what u said about Suikoden 2 To me It’s a beautiful story well told, with great art But I found myself putting it down a lot before I completed it Picked up Breath Of Fire 3 And I just can’t get off it Literally can play breath of fire 3 for hours on end without getting bored like I did with Suikoden 2 Hopefully this game will be the same to me, Most likely will
You say you haven't heard of them but then you list the games they made, so you should then automatically know about them based on the quality of those games listed. Unless you know nothing about the Shining force series, Golden Sun series or any of the Mario Sports games they have made. Just based on that I would say you weren't very familiar with the history or Sega or Nintendo then.
Beyond the Beyond had a lot of problems with the game, including poor game mechanics as you had to do a lot of button bashing to get multiple attacks or hit a critical blow, the encounter rate was high and experience points per battle was low, no warping spell for easy navigation between towns, and no exploration of the underworld. At least Dragon Quests 3-6 had underworld exploration, such as Alefgard in Dragon Quest 3 or Nadiria in Dragon Quest 4-6, and Breath of Fire II's last dungeon called Infinity. If Beyond the Beyond had a remake, it would get rid of needless button bashing, greater passive ability increases per experience level so that you won't have to wait well beyond experience level 20 to promote your characters and get high stats, increase experience points per battle, had more side quests, and most importantly, explore the underworld to learn what Shutat, Ramue, Yeon, Dagoot, and its people are going through.
I've tried this game many times. But there is something in it that bothers me and i don't know what it is. Like the video said, there is nothing wrong with this game but i just can't get to to enjoy it. And i've played a lot of generic old rpg's from SNES and PS, but this one i just can't endure.
I like Beyond the Beyond more than most, but you lost me at "better than Suikoden II".
I understand he's trying to say you shouldn't judge a game by its popularity, but he's trying to compare two games that came out years apart. I like BtB but everything about it was generic rpg. He's also wrong about Suikoden II. It got great reviews but it wasn't a well known game at the time.
Even now the Suikoden series is considered a cult classic.
He also LOST ME with capital L when he said that....better than suikoden 2???? Almost no game is better than suikoden 2 :V
shining force 1 & 2 were some of the best games on the Genesis.
Steven Labadie defined my childhood. I don’t even know how many times I’ve played through those. :)
Not just on the Genesis
Personally, I find it absolutely baffling that anyone could argue that BtB is better than Suikoden 2... I don't think S2 received the better score because it was made by Konami, I think it was lauded because it was superior in every conceivable way, and one the very best RPGs of the golden era. I get the point you're trying to make; that "Beyond the Beyond" is perhaps better than its review scores indicate....
but "Beyond the Beyond" better than "Suikoden II"? good grief no.
Hell, back in the day I actually really liked Beyond the Beyond, but Suikoden 2 is one of the best console RPGs ever made. Hands down.
lmao agreed. comparing this game to Suikoden 2 is like... comparing FFMQ to FF3(FF6) or Chrono Trigger on the snes. Its NOT a bad game...but there are games out there far better.
Played Beyond the Beyond when it was literally the only rpg for Playstation.
Then Persona and Suikoden came out. Never touched BtB again.
Hell no, Suikododen 1 and 2 were masterpieces.
This game came out int he PS1 era, which is quite possibly the golden era of Jrpgs. Its probably as decent game, but I could see why it would be not so praised
Despite it's flaws, this is still a favorite of mine.
This is why I watch Stan's reviews, he doesn't judge games based on their popularity.
Terry 309 true
That's the true power of art, anything are good unless made by unskilled ones or something made it bad
As others have pointed out, Camelot has made some all-time classics, like Shining in the Darkness/Force/Wisdom and the Golden Sun games. The GBA Mario Golf/Tennis games were pretty neat too.
You should review Wild Arms on PSX
It triggers me that here your health is labeled as "VP" instead of how it should be (HP).
Prepare to be even more triggered, VP stands for "Vagina Points."
ILikeBulletZ vitality points. Vitality is still a valid stat in modern games :P i still have mystic quest for the snes and you dont even get a number value. There is a giant yellow bar and smaller yellow bars. You just heal for the sake of it lol.
@@azinyefantasy4445 there is a setting to change that
Geez, Stan's just cranking out these reviews lately. I've been binge watching them this past weekend.
Great PS1 memories. I stumbled across Beyond the beyond shorty after it released. It's one of those games that didn't review well and has its flaws but is still enjoyable. Better than suikoden 2 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Good one
I loved Shutat's theme music. Perfect villain music. It always scared me as a kid when it came on and you knew something important was about to happen
I love your reviews, Very glad you are back ! Please continue reviewing Retro-games :). Thx !

"The characters are all thicc"
I like THICC butts, and I cannot lie! lol
As one who's played and beaten both "Beyond the Beyond" and "Suikoden," I definitely give Suikoden the much higher score.
K K the most unfair comparison ever lol. In suikoden you literally could reset the game until you won the highest dice roll and buy max upgrades. 108 playable characters. I mean it is like comparing kobe beef to your dads homemade beef jerky.
Nah I prefer Beyond the Beyond

I loved this game when I was a kid, and last time I was a kid was about two decades ago. Guess what, I still love this game to this day.

Thank you Stan. Really appreciate what you do!

oooooh thats why
no wonder i feels that this game's

looks a bit familiar😹🙈
SHINING FORCE played it in 1993 when i was 6 years old. god level game. golden sun: god level. now they make mario sports games, which are solid and fun...but people want rpgs.
Great review! I laughed out loud several times! 😆 I bought this game recently and I look forward to playing it.

My dad names all of his DnD characters after characters from this game lol
The battle graphics are definitely superior to what you see in SNES RPGs.
Camelot developed Golden Sun, which isn't surprising cause the battles here remind me of that game

I'm 2 minutes in and all you've done is talk about other reviews of the game? Sorry, I love this game, but you've lost me.
(not before posting a comment)
This game has very low review score.
Camelot also does the Golden Sun games.

Suikoden II actually has a very deep story and like 80 million characters, I didn't even know it was by Konami.

Golden Axe Warrior is underwhelming
I think you re the only dude that said something positive about this game.
oh man this bring back memories
I have played this game on PSX emulator for Android. It was very good experience.
Just wondering how far you've actually got in this game? Terminator 2 judgement day arcade on the Genesis or Snes is a good retro game.
I thought the title was a typo until you mentioned it in the video.
it is a hard game - but it is true that when the player get the grasp of the actual game - it is fun
Love this game when I was a kid.
My first rpg ever. I remember my thumb going red from days of grinding it was awesome! lol
Yo is your DQ8 review still up? Tried looking for it the other day but I couldn't find it.
Beyond the beyond is in no way better than suikoden 2.
There is plenty to hate about this game. Insane amount of random battles. Incredibly challenging puzzles that require so much back and forth. Alot of backtracking. Not very memorable heroes.
The story is great and I do love the simplicity
Hello, is this game available in US version please ?
woaw defenetly gonna try that is IT downloadable as a ps1 classic on the Playstation store?
This was my 1st real RPG experience and I really enjoyed it... but what's with that ending?
As someone who grew up on Shining games this is kind of weird. It has the GUI of the later Shining games, and some of the graphics, but also much of the 2d sprites that are more reminiscent of the graphics on the Megadrive Shining games.
intermediate stage of evolution between SF2 and SF3, nice
'This game is simple why did reviews pan it'
Character development was shit.
Ain't nothing but opinion. You liking Beyond the Beyond a little more is perfectly good. Just more people love Suikoden 2 more
I remember this game when it came out, it was like one of the first RPG's for the PS, I think I disliked it cuz I just played FF6 and Chrono Trigger and those games blew my mind and then I tried this was bored to death. Yet I can't forget the title and it doesn't look as ugly as my nostalgic memory remembers it as at least lol.
Kinami also ruined the Silent Hill franchise.
Konami ruined themselves already, not a single trace of shadow of what they used to be.
I hope their practices in an attempt to make money was worth it, because I'll never buy another one of their games, pretty much the same with capcom.
Review Ball Breakers and Small Soldiers
saw this at the game store gonna pick it up
Lots of times I’ll play RPGs to GET AWAY from puzzles yet some really good devs sometimes incorporate them into their games.. They especially don’t mix well with random encounters imo but to each their own..
The Golden Sun trilogy is probably really good if you got the time to play it..
Damn I’m seriously missing out on this game
BIG shining fan
Shining force legacy of great intention
Shining force 2
Shining force gaiden 1,2,3
Shining force 3 with the English translation roms
Shining force CD
Shining the holy ark
Shining in the darkness
And golden sun 1 and 2
But this shit looks amazing
And what u said about Suikoden 2
To me
It’s a beautiful story well told, with great art
But I found myself putting it down a lot before I completed it
Picked up Breath Of Fire 3
And I just can’t get off it
Literally can play breath of fire 3 for hours on end without getting bored like I did with Suikoden 2
Hopefully this game will be the same to me,
Most likely will
Then they made Golden Sun, then Golden Sun The Lost Age, probably the best gameplay in any JRPG. Then fucked it all with Dark Dawn
I guess the golden sun visuals are inspired from this
You say you haven't heard of them but then you list the games they made, so you should then automatically know about them based on the quality of those games listed. Unless you know nothing about the Shining force series, Golden Sun series or any of the Mario Sports games they have made. Just based on that I would say you weren't very familiar with the history or Sega or Nintendo then.
Stan, you never played Golden sun 1 & 2?! Go play it. You gotta play it. It's amazing and so is it's soundtrack.
Loved Golden Sun, but I just can't play these older Camelot games.
Really cool, but I wish this game was on the SNES, because that's what it looks like.
Even the battles look like mode 7.
WHAT? CAMELOT DID THE GOLDEN SUN SERIES!
Holy fuck you're still active?
Sookenden Two............
Argued against a 6/10 score, arguments make it sound a 6/10 score. The game is mediocre to the core. Snes games blow it out of water.
I've tried this game many times. But there is something in it that bothers me and i don't know what it is. Like the video said, there is nothing wrong with this game but i just can't get to to enjoy it. And i've played a lot of generic old rpg's from SNES and PS, but this one i just can't endure.
... you've never played any golden sun games? They are made by Camelot.
A little bit better than Suikoden 2??? LOL 🤣
Samson brought the value of this game down a little bit for me, lol
The amount of disrespect and ignorance in this video is staggering.
Tis game is better than ff7 ff8. Believe me
suikoden 2 looks really cool but the story oh my g- it draaags
Neat the battles remind me of Golden Sun.
Fix your damn aspect ratio
"Gamers don't jog out" Not for all of them, pal ;)
I loveddd this game
Better THAN suikodeb 2 xD, bro Suikoden 2 is one of the Best Jrpg in historyk, there is ni disscussion about it
This game blew my mind as a kid. Such a great game
"beyond and beyond is a little bit better than suikoden 2", please!!! WTF!!!, but you have ur point in some things there
maybe coz people actually like good story?
Did you really play through Suikoden 2? It’s hard to take anything you say seriously after the first minute of this review.
