Glad you didn't kill the snake, they do so much for us. I have had pet snakes most my life and after I read about them I have never killed one after that. Farmers should love them because they would cut down on the mice and rats. Saving their grain.
I have now learned that it was a Gopher Snake. Pituophis catenifer. Our subspecies is P.c affinis. The Bull snake is P.c. sayi and is found on the Eastern edge of New Mexico.
Nice harmless Gopher Snake. I always handle one when I see them. (7 so far). They're always friendly.
A special treat. Better than it being a Mountain Rattler, we have those too.

Never. Even the occasional rattler I relocate off the property. Wish the Bull snake would stick round just in case there is a rattler on the property.
