Looking for that definitive prog tone on a budget?
This might just be the answer!
This is an amended version of the original video, the demo section is now more fair, concise and interesting (I hope)!
comparing the music man and the sterling is like comparing two women. The music man is the model that everyone wants but do not get and the sterling is like the girl you get a crush on. You have a chance of getting it if you spend enough time.
Ilmari Lavi haha! Love this analogy!
The Sterling ends up the girl you actually love for life and you don't even realize and the EBMM is like the popular blonde girl every guy in high school was in love with. Perfect analogy my man
I own a Sterling JP 100, 150, and I'm about to get the 160. I really want a jp 157 too. I love the sterlings. They are so so so much value for the money. Great video!
Guitar and Gear Addicts Anonymous awesome collection dude! Thank you :)
Yeah you can change the pickups and it'll sound close if not just as good as a MM for a third of the price
@@pedrosilvaproductions honestly man the big boy MMJP is basswood with a small mahogany block so you’re absolutely right! The only true difference is the piezo, hardware quality, and pickups. The grade of males used in the Sterling isn’t highly figured but so what? I’ve owned both Sterling Jp and EBMMJP and honestly yeah the ebmm jp does absolutely feel better and play better but $2k better? No. The ebmm’s definitely feels alive and reactive when playing but the Sterling’s are really amazing affordable alternatives that I’d probably own and play on stage. I will say though I really didn’t like the feel of the floyd rose equipped ones versus the strat style bridges. I beat the crap out of that bridge too and never had a single issue out of it. This is really making me miss my Jp’s lol
@@GearsyGGAA I've played both EBMMs and Sterlings. Can you tell the difference? Of course. It even starts with the paint job. Now, if you're touring, playing on stage would you be more worried that you hit your 900€ Sterling (probably with some upgrades totaling idk 1400€) on the wall or your precious 3k EBMM? If I had an "original" EBMM I would be scared just to take out of the house. All in all, you can make the Sterling sound incredible, change the pickups, maybe change a couple of the hardware features, and you can have a killer guitar. If Petrucci says it's an incredible instrument for the price, you better believe it is! And honestly, how many times does one use the Piezo and the push pull +20db knob? lol
I think there’s no shame in getting the Sterling because it really gives the Music Man a run for its money in looks as sound.
And*
funny
@@tylerhawksmoor9601 Slap some dimarzios in the sterling and you basically have a music man without paying that retarded ass price. Foh
@@tylerhawksmoor9601 so your going to argue tonewood when the MM has basswood which is literally the cheapest "tonewood" out there. Price to spec the sterling is a much much better guitar. Music man guitars need to drop a grand across the board for you to start realistically seeing more played in the metal scene. Mahogany is the wood of choice on almost all standard types of custom shop instruments. The jp outside of the Pizeo and the pickups is closer in spec to the squire affinity series of guitars in wood spec. Thats pathetic at that price point.
@@tylerhawksmoor9601 never once did i mention anything about hardware and electronics. Nice way to nullify your 8 paragraph fictional rant. I was simply talking about wood when it comes to spec
This was like Top Gear for EBMM guitars. Loved it! My GAS for a JP7 is catastrophically high at the moment, and I really can't wait to see if I can try one to see how I jive with it.
Best demo music choice for this guitar comparison. Would listen to that on its own
Nick Abbott Thank you Nick! Really glad you enjoyed it! There’s a handful of original tracks on my channel that you might like :) I’m also working on new music with my band ‘Ending Paths’, you can find our music here on RUclips or on Spotify!
not gonna lie... its tax season... and that Sterling is sounding awesome
Did you ever get one?!
@@jamiefordmusician sadly no, 3 years later and I have most of my guitars put up and most of my time put into work, I miss it very much!
Do I hear a hint of Plini?
Great comparison! I liked your range of tones that you got from both guitars and I really liked the song!
Garrett Seghers Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it ^_^
You deserve way more subs, really enjoyed the flow of the video
One thing I like to factor in if you're considering getting a guitar for live play: would you be comfortable running the risk of damaging a $1-2,000 guitar for tone, playability and so forth? Or, is getting one half the price a good option for heavy gigging? Just a consideration rarely raised.
You've actually got a great point. If you can't afford to buy twice, Don't! (I ignore this all the time though) xD
I love my JPXI but I toss around selling it all of the time because I honestly don't play it much anymore.
I think the sterling sounds amazing and I own the exact guitar I think the stock pick up sound good and definitely one of my favorite guitars
tapping skills on point boi \m/
I can't hear a volume difference on the push push volume boost. I am playing at low volumes relative to playing a larger venue with increased volume overall. JP175
J Clevy I think it may be because our guitar hit the pre-amp first, which essentially colours the tone and then the power amp gives substantial volume. If you used a boost pedal in the Fx loop, you’d notice a huge difference over running it into the main input. So the boost pot on the guitar works a little like an overdrive. Your tone should be slightly louder but will sound more compressed. I’d only use it if I couldn’t get to my board tbh :)
I think I preferred the warmth of the Mahogani but the clarity in the PUs of the Music Man was so much better and the Piezo is a must have. For me the real JP15 wins, gonna get mine soon! 😁
Dominik Gastreich Ooooh! I’ll be really jealous when you do! They are just so gorgeous :D
Thanks to the feedback of many people, I have changed the demonstration segment of this review to be a little bit more entertaining, fair and concise! Enjoy :)
I recently sold my EBMM Majesty because I needed the money. I tried a Sterling JP157 and I like the neck profile better plus I'm not afraid of getting it scratched or damaged!
Win-win! The 157 remains one of my favourite guitars even years later!
Been thinking about getting one of these. Definitely getting one in a few weeks!
andrew morzinski Awesome Andrew! Let me know how you enjoy it when the time comes :)
@@jamiefordmusician yeah dude! I am just debating on what pickups i wanna stick in it.
What kind of stuff are you playing?
@@jamiefordmusician i am more into the progressive metalcore side of stuff. So more like erra/elitist but im still super influenced by dream theater.
Sweet! Bare knuckle are popular for heavier proggy stuff, although my JP7 with DiMarzio P’ups is the heaviest passive guitar I have!
Only one heavier is the EMGs in the Schecter!
The Sterling are beautiful, I had the Musicman Majesty 7 Polar Noir for a year and I had to sell it but I'll definetly buy the JP157 in Blue soon...! Cool demo! Your music is great, remins me of Haken!
Clément Durin Love a bit of Haken!! Thanks bud!
Haha do you have music of yours to listen?
great video man
Amazing review. Seems to be a different guitar, but not bad by any means, just different :)
Yeah, 100% agree! Ironically not really comparable 😂
great playing. suits the guitar really well
You've got yourself a subscriber. Your music and playing is great. I'll definitely check out your band too.
Demo comes up: "hmm I didn't know Plini and Haken were collaborating on a new album"
I mean... that'd be the best thing ever! :D
Sterling guitars are a GREAT value to begin with. Add the Schaller M6 IND tuners and that alone puts you in a better world. While I upgrade my AL40s to HSH configuration, I have a 2018 Luke that just screams with stock pickups...did I mention that Sterling are a GREAT value?
I'm glad you love yours too. The JP157 is still a major player in my arsenal and vI've still not felt compelled to swat the pickups! I know I will someday
I just found your channel. Great stuff !
Eric Labrek Thank you! :) more in the works!
The Sterling's have come a long way. I wish they would produce them with piezo. You don't need a built in mixer, just a volume to roll on/off the piezo. For me the piezo for 7 string is essential.
I was actually set on getting an Ibanez, idk why I wanted one and it had to have a floyd. Then I remembered I actually played a bunch of Sterlings in the past and always liked them, so why not get one? I just might, now. Thanks!
Ahh! Doo it! Doo it!!
I’m sure you’ll love whatever you get 🤘
Awesome!
Pampos Charalampous Thanks man! :)
Is this a music of yours? Wtf, soo cool, what's the name?
Ah thank you! It is just a song I made for this video, similar to most of my music though, you can find more on my channel :)
You saved my life mate .
I hate gunstock wax rub.
It just helps the neck wood dry out faster. If you live in an arid climate, you're lucky if you get 6 months out of a neck sans finish, before the edges are a cheese grater.
It offers no protection over a satin finish, and doesn't impact playability in any significant way.
Something NOBODY talks about, tuning stability after using the whammy bar
I own a Ernie ball music man($2000) and an olp music man($200) (the olp was from before sterling took over) and neither one stays in tune after a work out with the whammy. Sad because I like them both but the whammy design just stinks.
Yeah! Sorry! I completely left it out but I can confirm that they’re both excellent from my experience!
The Sterling has impressed me in value for money where the EBMM is just a marvel
I have a JPXI and just got an ESP Howe model as I didn't thing the JPXI got me $3500 worth of enjoyment even after almost 15 years. This review however has me looking at a Sterling for my next grab!
The JP15/7 models are still fantastic, I still feel the Sterling MAJ models are a little high priced for what they are, so definitely try before you buy with those!
(I tried one last week and was neither over, nor underwhelmed)
@@jamiefordmusician I'm really in love with ESP Eclipses right now and it feels strange that my JPXI just sits and watches me play a guitar half the price regularly.
It’s really what works for you, there is no best guitar for everyone!
real good demo, young man :-)
Thank you Charlie! 🤘
I must say that with distortion they sound very identical! If you used a piezo when you were using the jp7 then I should go for the budget option.... Cuz I already have a music Man monarchy majesty but the monarchy has sonic ecstacy pickups and the jp15 has illuminators as well as the regular majesty. That's why I went for the monarchy.
You said you can find a jp7 with piezo at around 1000$?
Damn I'm searching for days but for that price you can find 1-2 JP7 without piezo, so the 2006 models if I'm not mistaken.
Marco Tronu Hey Marco! I picked this model up from a seller online at £950 about 5 years ago, it was a choice between this and a white one that was going for £995.
Although it does seem the prices have become consistently higher since then.
@@jamiefordmusician Yeah unfortunately prices got much higher. The very best I could find is one at around 1700(with piezo)
I know this video is 2 years old but fuck me it's awesome and so well made. Thank you for selling me on this guitar lmao
Ah dude you’re welcome! Thank you :)
omg for solo Sterling is better :D is it possible?
i just hate how dirty my roasted maple neck gets. it's absolutely disgusting
A Sterling with a 7 string Floyd would be great.
JRPowell3_Music Well it’s very similar, Still a floating Bridge, just the tuners Lock, not the nut. 😊 It does most of the same things just no fine tuners, but i’m sure u know this
Hey Jamie, wonderful review! I have a question regarding tuning stability of the Sterling. Does the guitar stay in tune despite heavy bending and using of a whammy bar, or is it like with a Strat - when one has to push down on a whammy bar in order to get it back in tune?
Norbath Thank you :)
The tuning stability is very good, I’ve not experienced anything like that with this model!
Just got this very impressed
I love my sterling jp Matte black. I did change out the pickups and put in some fishman humbuckers
Awesome! How much of a difference did it make?
I got the same sterling but with crunch lab and liquifire pickups and sounds amazing, also i have the push pulll option for each pickup for single coil tone 🤘🏻👍🏻
Were they a direct drop in?
I recently picked up a Majesty X 7 string which is supposed to arrive today off Reverb. (I'll be at work 😔) I snagged it for 899 plus a 50 shipping charge and tax taking the total just above 1k. Its original listing price alone was 1599. I'm pretty stoked about it since it'll be my first guitar with stainless steel frets and I have been wanting a Majesty for years now. Someday I hope to get my hands on a Music Man Majesty though, the versatility and comfort I felt when when trying one out for the first time in a store back in 2016 has left me obsessed with it ever since.
Congrats! I hope you get loads of joy and inspiration from it 🤘 I tried an SBMM Maj 7 a couple of weeks ago and felt it was good, but a little overpriced at retail. I’d say you’ve done well!
Alright imma buy a Sterling JP Series guitar in the Future
"is it worth saving a little more for the eb?" Is it really worth 5 times more? I'm very interested in buying one of these... I'm not sure whether I would ever be disappointed with the sterling...
I genuinely think that the EB is worth every penny, especially if you can pick one up pre-owned. You’re right though, the Sterling would not disappoint
@@jamiefordmusician that's awesome to hear. I really don't think my budget could get the EBMM though 😔 I'm set to go and try some at a local shop soon. So we'll see. In sure the sterling would be 10x the guitar I need. But would love to own a mm one day.
Best of luck, I hope you find the perfect axe! 🤘
Doesn't really help though does it? Firstly, very nice playing. Secondly which are we saving for? A second hand music man, which you hope someone has looked after, or brand new? Should people buy the 157? It looks a serious rival to the premium ibanez out there, apart from the UV70P, which is total value for money. Anyway, You said the guitar was good. Then said don't buy it.
TheHaunted2 Thanks for the feedback! The issue I find is that the EBMM is notably better, but you have to be at the right place, at the right time to buy it at a similar price to the sterling. I don’t think I got the point across as consistent as I should have at the time but the Sterling is worth the money as a new guitar. You can confidently buy one for less than a grand, but an ebmm under a grand comes with the risks of the second hand market.
Sorry for not being clear there :)
Bridge pup of the sterling neck of the music man
Hey Jamie, very good comparison and display of your gifted playing. Do you have any opinion on the new 157's with the ebony board and liquifire/crunch lab set? Thanks and hope to hear from you.
Turbulent Juice Cheers! And I love the name too! Yes, they look like excellent guitars, however I feel when you’re paying THAT much for a sterling, you’re missing out on the opportunity to own an EBMM model, it’s not much more money to put toward a second hand JP6/7 but the difference is huge!
@@jamiefordmusician That's my apprehension as well. Thank you!
Turbulent Juice Anytime :)
Bestiaaal 🤨
Sterling like a music man derivation doesn’t leave nothing to desire for such price 😎
Great Value for money!!
I like mayones 7 strings lol and for my workhorse a schecter with a Floyd does good. I'm thinking of getting a jp150 in Neptune blue tho. Reminds me of a guitar the polyphia guys played but in blue instead of red. Wanna play champagne on it lol cool guitars tho
I’d recommend trying one for sure! I was shocked when I got the jp150, really didn’t expect it to feel and look *that* good!
Thanks for watching :)
Jamie Ford so I opted out for a music man cutlass sss lol the playability on it from what I’ve heard is really good. it comes tomorrow too. I think it will be cool guitar that’s not too expensive. Thanks for replying tho, cheers!
silverdragon0000120 Oooh I am jealous! Let me know how you get on with it! I’m hankering for the Jason Richardson cutlass atm!
Jamie Ford cool! I’ve seen that one but I already have a cool 7 string. the cutlass has a chunky 7 string type of neck which was weird on a 6 string for me. it’s also got a weird neck curve lol can’t explain it but it’s definitely weird. I liked it tho, for $1500 this would be the cheapest guitar I ever played and liked keep shredding. Gonna go play some jazz 😎👍🏻
well the jp70 itself is a luxury for me because it costs 1000 dollars here.
What's the big difference between the 157 and the 70?
They feel very different, the neck profile of the Sterling is chunkier and the finish is just slightly less silky!
Ok a quick question, this one or Jake Bowen JBM 27?
fattohead Hard to say, though honestly I’ve been playing the JBM way more than either JP! Was very surprised as JP7 had been my main for years!
Whereabouts would you go looking to find a 2nd hand JP7 because honestly it's difficult using reverb in the UK
I got mine from Gumtree, remember that Reverb is great but not the most UK-centric sales platform!
@@jamiefordmusician cheers mate. Yeah reverb can suck for UK also hard to get good deals when only people who know what they're selling use it
Absolutely! It does have decent buyer protection, so be careful with other sites :)
where can I find a music man for under a grand, let alone a jp7??
Jon the Kon try reverb, guitar center used section. Or ask for a discount from a reputable dealer. I’m pretty sure they can give you a discount.
Hello! What about playing? Is it Sterling harder to play comparing with jp7? Or it feels preety the same? I want a guitar easy to play and to bend
If the JP7 is like butter, then the JP157 is 'I can't believe it's not butter'. They'd both make a wonderful crumpet ;)
What a perfect answer 🍞@@jamiefordmusician
So much Plini influence 😄
does the Sterling stay in tune? i mean, for the bridge
Ian Bangher Hey Ian! Yes it does! I have had no issue with tuning stability with this guitar! I did with the old JP100 but they’ve vastly upgraded the hardware now :)
The only preocupation i have is the bridge, did you have any problem with it? Thanks for answering!
No issues at all! I’d definitely recommend it :)
You think this guitar can handle drop g#?
I have it in drop G# now! It's absolutely fine!
Jamie Ford do you have to adjust the bridge every time you drop tune it like a Floyd’s rose?
Daniel C Yes you will need to adjust for different tunings, it’s not too difficult to balance though
Jamie Ford great! Thanks man
Made in Indonesia 🇮🇩
Mantap 👏👏👏
And absolutely superb!
SAVE SAVE SAVE
Soft and stereo.... god
Jp7 sounds way better. Still sucks that I sold my jp157
I still love mine, well worth the money!
As far as cleans goes, both were "good" even though you could hear the sterling had way less definition.
song name?
This was just a demo I made for the review, I guess I could still name it.. actually, you can name it Luis! Anything you like, choose wisely :)
New sterlings are killers
4:48 Bitch please. There are no women at prog concerts.
heh, nut
she runs off with the bass player. Happened never :D
Bass is cool mkay!! ;D
@@jamiefordmusician yes I know. I love bass. And Im a male. ;)
That's not a real scenario... She would never run off with a bass player. LOL
