I think the man genuinely loves the woman. The woman genuinely loves him back at first, But slowly starts falling out of love with him. But she knows the man still loves her and so stays with him. But the relationship soon becomes toxic because the woman doesnt love the man anymore but doesn't want to hurt him by leaving. While the man slowly starts to realize the woman doesnt love him anymore and so when shes being nice to him, He gets sad because he knows its all an act. Just my take on it tho.
