Real reason they use turf is so stadium owners can rent out their venue for more events. Real grass is expensive and a pain to maintain for NFL standards if they’re trying to maximize profits by hosting more events.
The problem with turf is that there’s no deep give to the ground. Underneath is concrete as well so all the energy drives back up the leg, causes more soreness in the ankles, knees, hips wears you down. The issue with Aaron Rodgers injury is his foot was in a dorsiflection, spikes caught in the pebbles/turf. That’s great when making cuts or for speed, but when you have 275lbs on top of you, your feet will naturally dig in or move from dorsiflection to plantar flection which is easier on grass bc of the dirt/clay/silt/sand being easier to dig into. With turf you don’t have that. That angle and force that comes through the calf made his Achilles snap. You can say his age and other factors cause it but the issue is adding unnecessary percentage added to chance of injury. If FIFA players hate turf and the NFL changes it for him then the NFL needs to do the same for its own players. They want to sit and analyze everything that pushes there own agenda until they can’t anymore which takes years, like the concussion. Just make the change.
Yeah concrete is brutal o the legs/knees. I never played football, but when I worked for UPS I used to hop off the truck onto the sidewalk/street and later my knees were sore. I was 19 at the time. Grass needs to be properly maintained, following how the Premier League in England maintain their grounds. It's way more costly than just using turf (especially when it rains), but the faster these NFL players are getting and with more games, injuries such as achilles or ACL tears will happen. There are also issues with footwear, the weather patterns, and individual pre-existing conditions. So the surface has to be accounting for all that, which is why it's taking so long, and the medical team and training staff for each team has to be aware of the impact of a specific surface on each individual player.
I actually think his point is valid between turf and grass.. i think here is what differentiates soccer and football fields, soccer fields almost 99% of the time end up getting watered before every game even if they r playing turf, it creates a slippery but slick and smooth field for the soccer ball and players to not plant and get there foot stuck onto the turf now with football u cant do that cuz ur cutting and making a change of direction constantly but i bet watering it down very little would still benefit them from injuries related to grass.
Natural grass will always be better for playing; Players and coaches say as much and research has supported that notion. Primarily due to grass having more "give" as well as being softer on impact. Yes, you can still get injured on grass. Yet, the likelihood and sevrity of the injury is lessened, even slightly Turf is still an option simply because it's cheaper to install and maintain. The NFL could mandate that all stadiums use natural grass, but the owners certainly would have an issue with that and how it would "hurt" their bottom line 😒
And it’s absolutely possible to maintain grass even in bad weather areas, it would only cost more but it’s possible. It’s always about that bottom line
The Super Bowl last year alone where you see players slipping all over the place, shows you don't care. I understand the use of turf, but also let's be real, it was done for financial reasons.
That grass was NOT done the proper way at the Super Bowl. There is a guy that is known throughout the league as the "Sodfather". He's in his 90s and has been in charge of grass fields for every single Super Bowl going back to the 1st one. He said they wouldn't listen to him on how to properly treat and place a grass field in there and we saw the end results of it on tv.
I mean i looked a list this morning as of 2023 i saw that there are 14 stadiums including the jets stadium that uses turf but alot 14 other stadiums use different type of grass like the Baltimore ravens however you can still pop your Achilles tear on ravens home field so i dont really know if it will help
If the artificial turf is faster, that means it grips better, which means more force can be put into your feet before the surface gives out. That sounds pretty scientific to me.

Its called hybrid grass when you mix artificial and real... and its certified by FIFA and natural Grass. Turf has to be qualified material on two stages. Plus the FIFA World Cup has higher standards than NFL does. But my experience years running on both. Natural grass is better and has less injury. Than turf.
It’s all about the money. The Meadowlands is a multi-purpose arena and turf is the most cost effective way to accommodate this. - How come the European soccer leagues with an maintain natural grass in their multi purpose Stadiums- 2 examples are the modern stadiums of Tottenham Spurs stadium and the Newly Renovated Real Madrid Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. All NFL stadia should be real grass imho
I agree with the commissioner. Players need to focus on their cleats and wear the proper footwear. AG cleats do exists! Turf cleats do exist! FG cleats and sg cleats will cause injuries way more! Soccer players take this seriously as most fields we play on from a young age are turf now. Just FYI.
He said it in the beginning.. if the fields will change to grass it has to be collective bargain.. so players have to wait until it’s up for any change
It was up to the Dolphins to decide if he would reenter after the evaluation. The NFL should not be allowed to have players return after leaving for head exams.
Rodgers injury had nothing to do with the field being turf or grass. Period. However with that said, there is data out there to suggest that grass is better then turf when it comes to CERTAIN injuries. The fact of the matter is this. Injuries suck. You try to prevent them as much as possible but it’s not something where you can solely base it on the playing field.

let it go
What about fauci
I can't believe they let tua return
Caesar Flickerman and Seneca Crane
They DONT care about the players, the only reason they’ve ever made rule changes wasn’t for players saftey it was all to create more superstars on offense, restrict the defense more points are scored. Now more production and superstars are created for merch sales. Can’t hit the QB, now QBs can play almost 20 years to really maximize their profits the league can make off them. The NFL always tries to hide behind “player saftey” when it’s NEVER been about that for them. It’s only about the money💯 here he’s even saying “gotta do what’s best for the game” not the players
The reason athletes get injured is how they move. Loading force into your heels causes injuries. A teammate of mine showed me the method of how to prevent injuries. It’s GOATA. It’s my highest viewed video lol
Back in my day we played on bare concrete. 'Fake grass hurt me! 😢'. Give me a break.

U S. football would be more exciting, suffer fewer injuries if they implemented the lateral into play.
Former fan now follower of rugby.
The players agreed with it.
Every bad injury I’ve seen was on Turf.
U don't watch enough football
@@riccorichdude players like Travis Kelce talk about how terrible it is you don't watch football smart guy
@@bryantthompson6817 that's only his opinion. Probably doesn't prepare enough for his games
@@riccorich yeah and this Taylor Swift rumor or is it because if true kelce will be in one of her new break up song to her ex's
@@riccorichthat's most players opinion on turf fields u clown turf has no give compared to grass turf is essentially concrete it's terrible on your legs and joints
Stephen A. said 🤔
Cowboys have always played on turf the colts lions saints vikings other teams too unless they do like the Cardinals and have a retractable field they have to build a new stadium and that isn't going to happen
Umm this was a great Interview. Not soft ball BS. Stephen A has been known to pander if he likes the guest but today he was an objective reporter. REFRESHING. Held Rodgers feet to the fire, had him stumbling a bit. Rodger shouldn't feel comfortable with the press. Stephen A asking about Tua MAD RESPECT. not letting him word salad you with a cookie cutter answer, even better. shannon must be having a positive effect.. lol
At this point play 5 seconds hold
"We have the beat doctors making decisions."
"We need players to put their hands up when injured."
Doesnt sound like the doctors are making a decision then.
But that whole tua answer was waffle avoiding Stephen's question so sense isnt needed.
If true spelling of incognito if earliest memory of true spelling of episode
Its not even Astro turf. Astro turf hasn’t been around since like 2005.
So its a whole medical team on the side line ?
First Take
Its called hybrid grass when you mix artificial and real... and its certified by FIFA and natural Grass. Turf has to be qualified material on two stages.
Plus the FIFA World Cup has higher standards than NFL does.
But my experience years running on both. Natural grass is better and has less injury. Than turf.
The best possible surface is grass.
The head of the national fixed league, the rigging and scripting is in.
I agree with the commissioner. Players need to focus on their cleats and wear the proper footwear. AG cleats do exists! Turf cleats do exist! FG cleats and sg cleats will cause injuries way more! Soccer players take this seriously as most fields we play on from a young age are turf now. Just FYI.
He said it in the beginning.. if the fields will change to grass it has to be collective bargain.. so players have to wait until it’s up for any change
yeah, those players are sooooo greedy
It was up to the Dolphins to decide if he would reenter after the evaluation. The NFL should not be allowed to have players return after leaving for head exams.
He slipped in Damar Hamlin as his saving grace from the Tua debacle
You mean “we always want to try to have the MOST money”
Rodgers injury had nothing to do with the field being turf or grass. Period. However with that said, there is data out there to suggest that grass is better then turf when it comes to CERTAIN injuries. The fact of the matter is this. Injuries suck. You try to prevent them as much as possible but it’s not something where you can solely base it on the playing field.
Our field looks like grass and I think me and players prefer grass
Blame it on Artificial Turf!
Goodell doesn't not seem like he cares. It should be on the owners too realize that they don't want to loose their investments (players). And change to safer playing fields.
Booooooo. Rodger Goodell can do First Take but not the Pat McAfee show, Pat been tryna get him on for long time now 😂😂
Here we go again the so called back by "Science" like in CTE then suddenly SCIENCE BACK FIRE to all you commissioner. 😂😂😂
