Excellent presentation Dr. Samantha, especially the section on scar tissue. 👏🏼👏🏼
I had barely been able to walk for at least 6 years; had not been able to navigate stairs without heavy dependance on a rail for longer than that, and no one ever mentioned prehab. I had no idea until recently that prehab was even a thing and I am 9 weeks into my second knee, first knee was 10 months ago.
Cool! Thanks Doc.
Great presentation and information. Thanks for all you do!
I appreciate that!
Im 12 days post op and was doing great with the exercises for the first week post op. The home PT came out on day 4 and my flexion was at 102°. My next PT session I was given seated knee flexion exercise, but I overstretched the next day by manually pushing my leg back and ignoring the pain! I think I strained my IT band and can barely do any heels slides without excruciating pain. PT came again today and my flexion rom was only 90°! She told me to back off these for a while, but I'm worried about any damage I may have done, as well as upset at the setback in my rom.
May 15,2024. I am 11 weeks post tkr today. My bend is 115 and straight is -5. I have alot of swelling and stiffness still. When I elevate my leg , my hip, ankle and shin hurt so bad! I'm still going to therapy and I go back to my surgeon tomorrow. I'm not walking right which is causing my hip and groin to hurt. Is there still hope that I will get a better range of motion??
I came across your video about a month ago and I now watch one every day! Thank you sooo much for ALL your information 😊
Yes there absolutely is still hope! Keep working at it. I have a Knee Bending Course that is very very helpful. The results and reviews can give you some insight. www.succeedcourses.com/Knee-bending-course
Well done and appreciated. I am 5 months PO today. Still icing and still some swelling and evening discomfort. Walking either 1/2 mile or 1 mile daily depending on how I feel. Thank God I found you and the FB group.
Walking every day is too much
@@nancydianna4752 interesting you say that. Thank you.
It all depends on what you can tolerate. Half a mile is not that much walking if you are active and are doing chores around the house and doing some errands. Generally people are walking more than half a mile daily for regular daily activities. If your knee is tolerating that activity level well, then it is fine to walk 1 mile each day.
@@dr.samanthasmith thank you. Just finished my 1/2 mile walk and tried increasing my pace. I completed all my household chores before my walk today, now I am icing.
I am 4.5 weeks postop. How do you feel about red light therapy?
Dr. Samantha. Yours is one of the clearest explanations that I have come across in the recent past. Thank you! My question may knock you off!!
Is there any hope for a parkinsons patient ( who is on PD medication) who has had a tkr ? Is Physiotherapy and all the post op excercises going to be ineffective for them ?
The exercises and stretches will be the same! I would just be concerned with balance and walking. They might need to go rehab to get proper physical therapy
@@dr.samanthasmith Thanks a million for taking time to reply. Yea. He is on physiotherapy for knee extension . 12weeks post op. The physiotherapy will surely be effective, right?
Would love to see some information on IT band tightness. That seems to be what I am experiencing at night....IT bursa as I can touch the spot just to the left of my knee cap that is sore. Thank you for ALL you do for us TKR survivors.
Hi! Yes that is one of the topics coming up in a couple weeks. Stay tuned 🙂
@@dr.samanthasmith Thank you!
Any chance or regaining ROM after 2 years TKR surgery…? Close to 90 deg. Doctor says it’s dense scar tissue. Is surgery an option ?( I already had a revision 3 months after initial surgery). Pain and a feeling of having a lead ball inside my knee are a constant. Everybody avoids answers on this one. Did everything right… I’m afraid of another surgery that risks more discomfort and pain. It just didnt work for me. I had perfect ROM but arthritis pain before surgery at 59 y.o. Am stucked, Am I?
I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. You can do surgery for this but it’s a tricky situation because you are prone to excessive scar tissue. It will be tough to improve motion at 2 years post op
@@dr.samanthasmith Even with the “tricky surgery” you don’t think I’ll gain any ROM whatsoever?
@@dr.samanthasmith Thank you for all the great information and your “hands down” opinion. It has been a really tough process. Battling depression and anxiety but I must learn to deal with my new reality. Thanks again Dr. Sam.
How to measure knee bending angle at home? Pl simple method
It’s your lucky day! I did a video about this

Can I use my stationary bike after 1 week after surgery, it will be sitting on the bed. Thank you
I usually start the bike around week 2 post surgery. But it does depend on what you can tolerate. I don’t like to overdo the exercises in the first one to two weeks because it just increases the soreness and swelling.
Thank you for this! It was very informative. Can you help me understand what I’m experiencing? I’m at 6.5 weeks post op on a TKR. I am able to bend now to 110 degrees, but only after a few repetitions. But then afterwards, my knee doesn’t seem to want to bend past 90 degrees because it feels so stiff. The only way I get it to bend to 110 again is if I push hard through another set of repetitions. Will the stiffness begin to subside at some point and will my knee then bend to 110 (or whatever ROM I get too) on its own, or am I going to continue to have this problem? I also still have some swelling - my knee seems much larger than the non op knee. Thank you!!
What your describing is very very common. The stiffness well linger for quite some time between 6-9 months but it will go away and you’ll have no problem with your range of motion. Keep stretching! That’s a good sign your at 110
@@dr.samanthasmith ok, great! I’m so glad to hear that. Thank you very much! 🙂
