@@ReMiXNeoNZz More like the exclusive team was designed to more closely emulate the toys (which were three individual characters that combined: Viewfinder, Spectro and Spyglass), while the mainline Refraktor was designed to emulate the cartoon version, which were more like identical clones.
The show character was able to clone himself, it made animation cheaper and easier and was a creative way to make up for the lack of villain toys that were available at the time

So Hasbro remade this set of three figures to be more in line with the original "Reflector" set. It came in a box that looked like what you got an expensive DSLR camera in. And each of the three is colored like the original and has extra bits that make each piece unique. The right side, looking from the back, is red and has a detachable handle with shutter button, much like a professional DSLR camera has. The Center has the upper viewfinder shell to mimic a real DSLR and the bot is black and gray. The left, is blue and has a weapon flashbulb just like the original. Source, I owned the original set until Gram Gram tossed it out, and I own both a ser like you have and the special edition that I described. Bonus, all six figures of the two new sets can snap together, but the result looks slightly silly...
They also did a really nice repaint called scrapface, problem was that it was for a walmart exclusive limited line so you had to find three of a heavy scalped and sought after figure that stores where lucky to have 1 of. I remember going to dozens of Walmarts to get all three, it wasn't as bad as something like Netflix ER soundwave but it sure was frustrating

As a starscream and seeker sycophant, i would have never looked twice at this robot camera figure that you have to buy 3 times in order to build a not at all convincing camera. However, this video somehow sold me on this figure by highlighting how sturdy and simple the robot to 1/3 of the camera transformation is, and by highlighting the intelligent design behind the weapon and shields merging to one.
I mean, yes they did, but he’s basically the perfect army builder so I have a little deceptisquad on my shelf they combine into what I mentally call a “photonic tri-cannon” turret but we all know what it is. I love bad guy grunts and this guy is great.
This is one of the most versatile transformers ever designed. Google fan modes for this guy and there's tons of different things people come up with. Combiners, scorpions, crabs. All kinds of stuff. When these first came out I spent hours just finding different ways to configure them together. One of the best transformers they ever released.
I have both sets of these guys, the ones you show here and the colored version that has more add ons and they’re amazing! But recolors have been a staple of transformers from day one. Prime and Ultra Magnus, Seekers, G2, on and on
Back in the original transformers from the 80’s there was a Walkman robot with a cassette that transformed into some sort of robotic bird of prey. Pretty cool stuff.
I think a lot of these G1-style modern transformers suffer a bit from the over-detailing that... just kinda gives away the fact it's a transformer, whereas the original molds looked pretty convincing as regular toy cars or various objects with only some small seams giving away the fact they can transform.
Plus they did three different versions, so there was some mix & match, and the character has had some cool interpretations and history over the years like only being available as a mail-in and possibly being one shared consciousness with three bodies, and the figures work really well with the “weaponizer” gimmick. …the face does look kinda like Putin, though. Coincidence but still a bit weird.
These guys were everywhere in season 1 of the 84 series, as background footsoldiers, mostly doing menial tasks like construction or carrying energon cubes. IIRC, they were used a lot less in season 2. Even though they still had appearances, the seekers were more popular, and the constructicons were the 1985 toys, so reflector just didnt get the same background usage
Reflector was the og troop builder, like any nameless Decepticon you saw on G1 were either Seeker Clones, or Reflector Clones At least until the Insecticons came into play
He's actually the reason I army build in 3s, like sharkticons, Insecticons, allicons. I limit it because then I don't buy too many from the market but still gives me the army fodder look.
Only reason I have all 3 of these guys is because I had a lot of disposable income when they released. Glad I have them but I still wish I had that job.
Fun fact: reflectors where the original vehicons being the expandable soldiers of the decepticon army but they they all died off screen in the movie and where replaced by the sweeps
YOOOOOO I found this figure in a Walgreens in New Jersey and I almost only bought 1 of him. I was both mad and impressed when I read the box and found out that in order to make the camera I needed 3 of him. Like that “I’m not even mad” kinda mad XD I’m just glad I figured it out before I checked out and left the store and that they happened to have 2 more in stock
I hated that I had to buy three of them but I loved the fact that they could turn into the camera just like the original. And then I hated the fact that the shortly thereafter came out with a version colored like the original Reflector toy. And I still want that version.
That was the concept for a bunch of the Diaclone toy line that got pulled over to become Transformers. For instance, the minibots like Bumblebee and Cliffjumper were originally Choro-Q/Penny Racer sized characters.
You forgot to add that though you needed 3 to make the camera, the shipping boxes only included 3 refractors per box, so alot of the time stores were sold out because collectors would buy out the stock. I was only lucky because my Walmart had two being returned the same day I was buying one
Oh that was HORRIBLE dude. But I think it was even worse, cause I recall them being sold only 2 per shipping box. which made it impossible to get him in one go unless they had accumulated.
So, I have 10 of these figures. I have 4 of the original, 3 of the repaints with battle damage that were a Wal-Mart exclusives, and the 3-pack done in the original toy colors, that came with exclusive pieces/weapons and a Kremzek figure. And I have them all in camera mode, except for one Refractor by himself in robot mode.
I have seven of him. Two different add-on kits for two sets of three. One single one cause they can fold up into a micro camera by themselves. I also got a Scrapface for a custom.
On their own Refraktor's vehicle mode makes no sense. But when you have three of them the camera mode starts to explain everything. What a way to convince kids to buy three of the same thing
Oh yeah it reminds me that Blaster, his minibots and his siblings all turn into everyday items. With Blaster being Well a boombox and his minibots being cassets. Now his siblings, Carmen and Toaster are pretty funny, with Carmen being a hair curler and Toaster being well a toaster

I got the special 3 pack that has them as different colors and they have the original names of Reflector when he wasn’t triplets but still one bot. I actually kept the cool box with them too.
As someone with allergies it’s nice to see the autobots include me and my part of the world with the autobot epipen. (That is the most hilarious transformer I’ve ever seen 💀💀)
Always thought that Refraktor should’ve been like a space station or something similar back in g1. Sort of similar to Soundwave from that one Michael Bay movie.

I put them in spaceship mode a couple years back and it actually stayed on display in that mode.
My favorite fan mode is the hand build.
The fan mode got green lit when they made the toy accurate 3 pack. It actually costs more than 3 of the original siege refraktors.

they actually sold a 3 pack of Refraktor in toy accurate colors and with all the camera accessories. they even put it in a cool looking camera box =)
