  • With the new move updates to Go Battle League in Season 13 it's not only the Great League that has had the meta shift dramatically. Ultra League is also seeing the effects of the newly improved Wing Attack as well as the slight nerf to Charm and Poison Fang. With picks like Nidoqueen and Alolan Ninetails instead making way for Charizard, Pelipper, Pidgeot and more.
Every now and then I like to experiment with making a team that does not require XL at all for the Ultra League and as the meta shifts this can become either harder or easier depending on the empowered mons. With the rise of flying types and the resurgence of ice types it made sense to try out an old favourite of the Ultra League, Melmetal. While it may have died off in popularity in recent Seasons Melmetal is still immensely strong in the UL with SuperPower and Rock Slide granting amazing coverage that can threaten plenty of popular picks as well as core break alot of the new teams trying to capitalise on Wing Attack.
With an "unusual" lead that can throw some opponents off, an unusual pick in the back can help maintain that momentum and carry you to a win that your opponent doesn't have chance to figure out how to stop. Enter Milotic, a unique water type that boasts dragon coverage with Dragon Tail, water Coverage with Surf and a huge nuke in the back with Blizzard. Milotic can make a tough pivot to handle if an opponent isn't ready to handle it and can deal with some of Melmetals tougher matchups.
To round out our coverage we're bringing the original bulky boi of the Ultra League Giratina. Shadow Claw Giratina pairs exceptionally well with Melmetal covering it's biggest weaknesses like Swampert, Registeel and Galarian Stunfisk.
Overall these picks come together to create a tough team that can handle meta lines, and doesn't require either XL candy OR Elite TMs. (Unless you want Shadow Force on Giratina but I wouldn't say it's worth it)
This Team IS weak to Scrafty/Obstagoon but honestly there haven't been many running around that I've seen, and you still have some coverage there thanks to SuperPower, plus Milotic can hang out against them pretty evenly

Is it a good idea to use shadow force for giratina?

I'd say Tapu Fini or Primarina for a different approach to similar coverage that would also give stronger protection against Obstagoon or Scrafty. Primarina isn't as versatile but is still underrated in Ultra League I think

Use what you have, it’s really about wether you want to invest in one you don’t consider viable. The one he used was a hundo, not good pvp iv’s but he pulled in wins.
