I also forgot to say please stop telling me my designs are to hard to animate I know that but also there kinda not I mean there are many shows and movies with complicated styles or characters and there still able to do it like look at hazbin and helluvaboss they where able to do it and it looks great
To be fair, those two shows have been criticised for being too complicated with their character designs. But I don’t think the “these are too detailed for animation!!” argument holds up here, since these designs aren’t being animated, and your creative freedom shouldn’t be limited because of that. No one says this when a fan does detailed, realistic fanart of their favourite characters, so I don’t know why they’re doing it here. Your designs are amazing!!
Ahhh, I’m so sorry if I was part of a unwanted choir! I didn’t see anyone else say it, but I wasn’t looking too hard. I guess I just went into the original video with different expectations, I guess. Your redesigns are still amazing, and you absolutely hit it out of the park with Snapdragon! Again, all the compliments from part one s comment hold true, and I’m sorry if we’ve been badgering you about this.
They would NOT be complicated to animate. Lol This is literally not any harder than the original designs XD I’ve seen redesigns that have gone above and beyond crazy with their redesigns. Designs that you couldn’t hope to animate in your lifetime. Your designs are no harder than animating Voltron characters. (If you don’t get what I mean, look up their designs.) Edit: Or like She-Ra! Their designs are really similar in complexity as well!
Snapdragon being trans isn’t a bad idea in itself, and there are good aspects to it. But the execution itself is done in such a way that it indirectly reinforces a bunch of harmful stereotypes about both men and women. The biggest issue is that it was focused on how Snapdragon BEHAVED and wanted to present himself and not on how he actually FELT ABOUT HIS BODY. At no point does Snapdragon ever express feeling like his body was wrong. The closest we get is him mentioning wanting slender hands, and while that is a very common trait in trans women, everything else is focused exclusively on his behavior and interests. It comes off like because he’s super in tune with his emotions and likes feeling pretty and girly things, clearly he must actually be a woman. Gender nonconformity? What’s that??? It feels like a less judgemental version of that “tomboys need to just transition already” tweet that’s been going around. Like “men if you’re super emotional and like feminine things, give up pretending that you’re a man because we all know you’re a woman.” Like it’s a super toxic mindset being presented as progressive, it’s seriously alarming.
Given that the show creator is a trans man, and Snapdragon was inspired in their voice actress, a trans woman, it's really weird that body dysphoria isn't a part of their story arc. You would think that that is the most important detail when writing a trans character, but apparently the writers just forgot to include it. They just went "he wants to dress up like a mermaid, so he can't be a boy" instead. Snapdragon never even seemed uncomfortable being treated by male pronouns, they just hated when people said they couldn't be sentimental, or enjoy the things that they like.
Unrelated but as a cis woman I also wish I had slender hands. Completely related it's unfortunate that this opportunity for representation was done in such a was that it unwittingly reinforced some old and harmful things. I seriously don't think that was their intention, but it's unfortunate.
Not necessarily his body tho (not all trans people have dysphoria, but it would REALLY fit his arc, and it’s relatable to a lot of trans people), but really HIMSELF. But I agree. I think the show kinda made it seem like being a cross dresser/liking stereotypical things of the opposite gender and being trans is the same thing
Yeah, can't some boys just be different. I actually am working on a character in my comic that's similar to that. He tries to act all tough and manly while hiding his secret 'girly' interests. And FYI he's not trans or gay.
Amaryllis new design radiates villainess aura. She looks as if she could kill you with her smugness alone. Snap looks stunning. I can see he would wear it when he finally come to terms with his problems. I also love that both of them are wearing high heels. TEAM HEELS for the win!
Wolfsbane is probably my favorite in the group redesign that happened, I am simping for amaryllis and snap looks amazing, but wolfsbane is just a cute boy who is just- it’s hard to explain really. He’s mysterious yet friendly and cute yet sassy all at once. I don’t know how it was captured in him but it was and I love that fact
Thank you and yeah my roomate wouldnt stop talking about it 😂 she was so mad at the outfit and id completely forgotten what it even looked like since we only saw it once
And honestly I ADORE the subtle pirate angle. Amaryllis did mention something about deck hands during her convo with Thyme in the maze, so that would make sense. It might also explain why she has such a natural tendency for violence, since maybe that’s the way her parents operate as pirates or swashbucklers. Honestly the only reason I care about this show in the slightest is for Amaryllis and Snapdragon. Oh, and Parsley. She’s cool too ig.
I know no one will agree with me but I actually don't mind her having a pink color scheme in one of her outfits. It would maybe reveal a softer side that is what people would least expect. I'm just not a fan of the relentlessly goth like type personally.
I’m gonna be honest, I wouldn’t have made Snapdragon trans. I would’ve made him a guy who enjoys crossdressing. It would’ve broken down so many gender stereotypes for men and taught people that enjoying feminine clothing doesn’t change your gender identity. Snapdragon got angry with people calling him a girl and was shamed for his tastes because “boys shouldn’t feel like this”, so as a solution to this, the show decided to make him trans, which sends out the WORST message possible. Plus I must add that Sage mocks Snapdragon and tells him that he couldn’t possibly understand her friendship with Rosemary because he’s a guy. And then when she realises she’s hurt him, she says that he probably does understand and how she shouldn’t have said that. But that apology and moment of self-awareness gets crushed when Snapdragon is actually shown to be trans, which pretty much backs up Sage’s argument of “guys aren’t in touch with their feelings”. Any young male viewers watching this crappy show must’ve felt awful about themselves watching it, so I’m glad it’s getting torn apart and rewritten/redesigned the way it SHOULD be. Love the designs btw! I enjoy the contrast between Snapdragon and Amaryllis!
This so is just so blatantly s3xist it's so damaging. People say that it should've been on Cartoon Network but I'd argue that would've been worse since it's essentially telling small kids that all men are bad.
i feel like he should’ve questioned, tried she/her pronouns and such and realize: hey i’m a guy that just likes presenting myself femininely. and everyone accepting him whole heartedly to show that its ok to question and come to the conclusion that you’re cis
Honestly I thought Snapdragon was gonna be a feminine presenting straight guy. I know it’s impossible for the show but as you said everyone kept telling them (her???) that they were a girl or that they weren’t a proper guy to the point where they started internalizing it and it genuinely made me start hoping that we’d get one guy character who isn’t terrible or the principal who is very clearly a staff favourite. There are femme men and I held on to that hope because their gender identity and expression shouldn’t be something they are told and shoved towards yk? Why CAN’T they be a boy who just happens to look good in a mermaid costume? Why CAN’T they be a boy who is friends with more girls than guys and wears nail polish because it makes him feel right? You don’t have to be a girl to enjoy feminine things and I wish we had gotten that from the show :/
Headcanon? Amaryllis and Snap are cousins who both are the outcasts of their family, Amaryllis cuz she's not a redhead and her attitude, and Snap cuz they don't conform to traditional gender norms. They relate to each other and are very close since they're both outcasts.
Yeah i was really surprised my friends where all like huh is it me or is snapdragon getting more of a story arc than the main cast but when we got to the end we were all so confused my roomate even more so she was was so convinced snapdragon was gonna be nonbinary
They kinda ruined him too by immediately making him trans instead of a guy that just likes feminine clothing/crossdressing. Liking that doesn't immediately make them trans. .....I should know lol I'm like that most of the time/j
Snapdragon's redesign was the best out if all of them in my opinion. The historical inspiration and the Lancaster rose on the cape coloured like a snapdragon flower is just... *chef's kiss*
Snapdragon deserved so much better. I really don't get why they had to add a transphobia into a fantasy series that's otherwise seems to lack prejudice. Did having a transphobe bully Snapdragon really enhance the themes or make the story better? They already had a really good conflict over their family's expectations vs the person they really wanted to be, and the writers never really used it to their full potential due to that transphobe sideplot. Like why was the line drawn in this idealized fantasy series at trans characters stories not revolving around reacting to transphobes?
I think the thing I like most about The Owl House is exactly that. They chose specifically to not include homophobia and other prejudices of the kind, and it's really refreshing to see! Sometimes you just want a feel good show with diversity...
The transphobia in the show is kinda stupid to be honest, more with the fact that everyone with magic can change gender or body or idk...isnt suposed to be normal to change?
I'd love for a show where lgbtq+ people are seen as completely normal and nobody says anything about it, like a character who just so happens to be trans and it's not a reason for conflict
Avatar the last airbender is a really good example for diversity. Disabled people like Toph (Blind) and Teo ( in a wheelchair), different ethnicity, different genders in the main cast, etc....
Not to mention diversity in families. We literally start with Katara and Sokka introducing their grandmother to Aang as their legal guardian, and Zuko is in the care of his uncle for the majority of the show. We see so many families in the background, too, that aren't two-parent households, and while some people bring up how they miss a lost loved one like Katara’s mother, I don't think anyone has EVER compared their families. Toph relationship with her parents is strained, and no one tries to guilt her by saying "at least they're both still alive". It's just... really refreshing
Given how much baggage snap has with masculinity, he really just struck me as someone who was gender nonconforming but due to how he was raised, couldnt conceive of being a feminine man because men in his family werent allowed to express themselves that way. Theres a stereotype emerging that gender nonconforming people are pushed to identify as trans or transition, even if that's not what's best for them, and I dont like the way the story plays into that. Glad they tried to do trans rep at all but it felt really weird with the backstory they gave Snap
Yeah it just doesn't match up. All of Snap's issues doesn't come from being a man but simply not fitting an "image of man" which doesn't really feel like something solved with transition. But no the show based on progressiveness and inclusion just had to knock it into your head that if you don't fit stereotypes (outdated and harmful might I add) for one gender you clearly had to be born in a wrong body.
We're they not allowed or did it just never occur to him cause I saw the flash back and it doesn't say anything about how a man/boy should be its just a lesson on defending yourself
I personally think it would have been better if Snap was something other than trans. Genderfluid, non bi, gender non conforming, or even just a crossdresser. I just think it would have been great for diversity than having two trans characters. I have the same sort of problem as you where people mistake me as a guy all the time. Even when im wearing more female presenting clothes, unless im wearing like a dress or a skirt, people think im a guy. I just like to wear jeans and t shirts lol
i think a good identity for snapdragon would've been like a rosboy or something. rosboys are men who have a deep connection to femininity and i feel like that would've fit snap way more than snap being trans. most of the men in the show suck and (i think?) the show had a bit where men and women can't be friends so snap being trans was kinda..um..yea.
@@sallyisbestgirl6908 yea most of the men on the show either have no personality or are terrible human beings. Also it was Sage who told Snap that guys and girls can't have meaningful relationship
@@IncorrectHB i've heard that the creator (or atleast someone important on the team) posted some stuff about hating men which is probably why most of the men suck? idk how they got away with that
Your designs are amazing! Fun fact: although the creator of the show says the show is named "high guardian spice" because the characters are named after spices, the characters are actually named after herbs.
Snapdragons redesign is so beautiful, I'm glad you incorporated actual colors of the snapdragon flowers. I'm not sure why they never considered doing that for the characters' design processes
Ok, I just have to say, your experience with thinking you're transgender is something I 100% relate to, and was exactly what I thought was happening with Snapdragon, until I found out what the writers were like. As a tween and teen, I was very boyish. Never wore makeup, never wore dresses, hung out with only guys because I didn't know how to socialise with girls, and that changed the way people talked about me. The first time someone misgendered me was a weird experience. It was a good friend. He knew I was a girl, and as soon as he realised he called me "he" he apologised. But, it started me down that train of thought. Didn't help that I was going through some serious body image issues. A group of girls used to bully me relentlessly in grade 8, and always told me I wasn't enough of a girl, and I was a failure because of it. That, if I couldn't go all the way to be a "real" woman, then I shouldn't even try. So I reacted by getting rid of everything feminine. Gone was the pink, the headbands, the hair clips, but it wasn't enough. I started to hate my own body, because I hated these girls. I didn't want to be what they wanted me to be, so I started looking into binders. That was the last straw. Everyone who found out I was trying to get my hands on a binder (which was hard back in the early 10s in a shitty little town) assumed I was trans. People suddenly talked to me about if I was going to change my name, cut my hair, what pronouns I wanted. On one hand, it was really nice. They supported me, and no one that thought I was trans ever tried bullying me. If I had've been trans, it would have been the best environment to transition in. But I wasn't trans. But everyone kept telling me I was, for years, and I almost started to believe it. Years and years of people asking me if I was still ok with female pronouns, people giving me more gender-neutral versions of my name, assuming that I didn't want to do activities that were girly, because "she's not into that" or "she's not really a girl, I don't think, so don't invite her. It'll just make her uncomfortable." In spirit, it's a nice gesture, to avoid putting me in uncomfortable situations and not force me to come up with some weird excuse to not go, but it messed me up, not gonna lie. I got older, moved on from the trauma left by those bullies, and officially came out (this is gonna sound really fuckin weird, but in context it really was coming out) as a cis woman when I wore a dress to my graduation party. The same night, one of my friends came out as a trans man by wearing a tux. It was a great night. I know now that if I had tried transitioning, I would have regretted it for the rest of my life. I still have issues, my chest still bugs me, but I am proud to be a woman. I like my name; I like styling my hair in really fancy feminine ways; I don't want to be called a man. I love that we are getting more characters who are trans in media. I really do. But if the creators really want to break down gender rolls, like they say they do, they need to have characters like this Snapdragon. People who are comfortable in their pronouns, but just happen to wear a binder, or wear pink frills, or like having their nails painted and their hair done. If you really want to break down stereotypes, think about people like my best friend, who spent all of highschool with everyone assuming he was gay, because he liked feminine things like scented body wash, stickers, and pretty colours. He's a 6ft, tough, beared, straight, cis, man now, who happens to walk around smelling like strawberries and loses his shit over cute animals. Deal with it, society. I'm sorry about this rant, but I've never met anyone who understands the pressure of being told you're trans, because you're gender non-conforming. Every time I've mentioned it to anyone, they accuse me of internalised transphobia, and don't consider that I was just a teenager questioning my identity and sexuality, like everyone else in the world, and that this was simply my choice in identity. These people claim to be against the binary genders, and toxic gender roles, but those exact people are the ones that told me I'm trans and he's gay, because we don't fit their image of a cis or straight person, so we can't be those things. Sorry it's so long. I had to get it off my chest. I doubt anyone has read this far, but if you have I hope you have a wonderful day, I hope you can fine a reason to smile, and a way to make someone else smile.
On one hand i REALLY love these designs but on the other hand I'm so sad cause it's not how the show actually looks like so i feel like we're missing out
Lol i wish i had the man power to completely redo the show me and my friends way but itd probably take us longer to work on than this show was released 😂😂😂
Listen, I’m begging you to redraw Rosemary’s mom I don’t know why, but her design ticks me off But also, love the wolf man, he’s cute, and I like werewolf-like characters
@@kalystagutierrez1607 I was waiting for someone to say that 😂 like she really does look way to much like shiro I mean besides the nose scar her eye shape and face shape are really similar to him
Oh my goodness!! Amaryllis looks so much fancier, and Snapdragon looks so much more fleshed out! I absolutely love Snapdragon's outfit!!! Omg! You're so amazing with your designs!!!
“I’d kill for a show to include a handicaped person” Me writing the pilot for my magical girl show where the main character is a nonbinary person with mobility issues who needs a cain: “oh just you wait… just you wait.”
YES cant wait we need more handicap characters in animation like I really loved Amaya from dragon prince makes me miss my old project of a deaf superhero
@@EtamirTheDemiDeer I guess I misworded that a bit. What I meant was that for me and others, ADHD can have an effect on relationships, commitments, and how people perceive us. Basically, I see ADHD as a part of me that contains both my strong and weak points. So personality-wise I can be a burst of emotions or unintentionally self-isolate. In my experience, I have a hard time managing it and see it as a flaw but I'm working to get better and it helps to have a character going through similar struggles. In a way your comment makes me feel called out for internalizing ADHD as a personality flaw than what it actually is so thanks
Thank you alot of my ocs are boys mostly as an outlet but yeah I'm a huge fan of mixed cast character's its always more fun to see how they all interact with one another
Thank you and i like to think its cause ive had a ton of ideas for a show like this but never really did anything with since id rather just draw characters 😂😂😂😂
HOLY CRAP YEAH as a genderfluid person, Snapdragon really hit me with the 'feminine male' since despite wanting to be a male when I'm on those days, I want to dress in light and pastel colors and act soft which can be perceived as feminine too as well so Snapdragon being a genderfluid enby really makes sense, like. Yeah, wanting to be a girl somedays but also like, not. So yeahhh
I feel pretty sad that snapdragon's arc isnt, beige a boy that likes girl things but doesnt want to be a girl and isnt gay. I feel like we dont get to see that often :/ Their always in the end gay or trans which isnt bad but i want some guys in these shows to be a guy that just like girly things and is just an ally (supports LGBTQ+) ig
You knocked it out of the park again! I love the new outfits and hair for the characters. I especially love Snap's new armor it's so fancy and fun-looking. And if you were talking about my comment I meant to say that it shouldn't be completely accurate (especially in fiction)but should take inspiration from clothing that was worn at the time its based on with a mix fantasy. High guardian spice doesn't do that well but you did that well here in your interpretation. I'm sorry if my previous comment came across as confusing or condescending.
Thank you and snapdragon was extremely fun to re design and lol no your comment was fine there where just a few late night people nitpicking every little thing I did or didnt do basically writing a whole essay about medevil fashion and weapons when its kinda clear im a character designer not a prop maker lol
Plant fact! When snapdragon flowers wilt, they resemble skulls... Also with your eye things, you got the terms mixed up. The white part of the eye is called the sclera (sclerae plural), the colored part is the iris (Greek for "rainbow" and also the name of a flower that comes in many colors), and the black part is the pupil! It's the hole where the light goes in so you can see the stuff you do (hence why it's black, it's a void).
Duuude, ive seen them, they are both beautiful and slightly unnerving flowers. I keep thinking about their little note regarding Snap's white pupils and wonder what if we could do something with it. Like maybe take the part of the snapdragon's skull appearance upon wilting and give Snap some kind of secondary creepy main ability - since hes not totally human. He is shown to use magic in the show so perhaps upon practicing more, he could really develop it into something unique. And he would end up being a graceful fighter with really sinister abilities (would contrast very nicely imo)
Snapdraon and Amarylls are legit the best characters in the show. They're great friends and balance eachother out ( unlike rose and sage's friendship which is so toxic.) And while they really should not of made SnapDragon trans, but instead a guy who embraces that he loves more fem things, cross dressing, make-up, etc, he feels like an actual character compared to the rest and is someone we want to root for because he's so likeable. These two should've been the main characters and I'm honestly impressed as it's clear the writers were trying to make us dislike Amarylls with how she treats Sage and such but she turned out to be a much more enjoyable character than Sage.
Small thing I noticed: Even though Snapdragon gives off more Nonbinary or "guy who likes traditionally female things because he's a boss", they had a better 'trans arc' then the actual trans- and I find that disturbing. Carraways was weirdly forced, since they were talking about Rosemary's mom and suddenly started explaining transgender after seeing an old pic- meanwhile, Snapdragon showed genuine confusion on what to do and who they were, spanning out a few episodes. Though to make it worse, Carraway jumping straight to transformation magic was... Severely uncomfortable. I had many issues with Carraway jumping the gun on someone so mentally vulnerable to any solution that seemed like it could help, even if the possible solutions weren't permanent (which I have a lot of issues with as well due to the nature of gender change)
I love the redesigns so much! And I really like your take on Snapdragon’s storyline, this is coming from a girl who enjoys gender-neutral things and dislikes being mistaken as nonbinery, as it feels like something that’s pushed on me, instead of something I choose for myself. That’s what Snapdragon’s arc felt like to me. I wouldn’t mind Snap being trans, as long as they choose for themselves to be that way, but with every character kinda forcing the fact that Snap is unmanly and would be better as a girl, it felt like Snap only chose to be transgender, because it was the only option to fix his problems. It felt really manipulative, and it didn’t feel like good trans rep. It also kinda reinforces the toxic message that is “If you’re a guy and enjoy feminine things, then you’re either gay or not a guy”. I’m probably wording this comment incorrectly, and I really hope it doesn’t come off as transphobic. Also, aww, the Rayes and Parsley’s VC seem like really nice people. I feel bad, knowing they must be getting a lot of hate because of the show. If HGS ever gets a Season 2, I hope that the writers will listen to the constructive criticism, and improve their writing, because no matter it’s flaws, the show has potential.
you know, as an anime artist who had a lot of american? western ? influence in my life. Your style really resonated with me, can we talk abt how cute snapdragon is?? so cool!
9:17 I FEEL THAT! I had a ftm trans friend say that I pass better than he does. I've also been called "sir" or "young man" before and it sucks! Just because I'm a tomboy doesn't mean I am a boy!
SNAP LOOKS SO STUNNINGGG YOUR ART IS SO BEAUTIFUL I also really likes the headcannon that snap is an effeminate guy and not trans because it adds so much more to his character but oh well we're not the creator
I headcannon Snap isnt human but rather a creature with a dual nature. Like, in his family all the members have a reputation to be conventionally attractive but can always switch on to a more sinister side when in battle for instance (since snapdragon flowers turn to skulls when wilting). That way Snap would create the perfect contrast - a very beautiful looking boy normally, but with the spirit of a warrior of the snapdragon clan, who can turn creepy just like the rest of his family. It would also fully embrace his name (even though his family wouldnt see it just yet if we still used his canon past) and Snapdragon would in time become the embodiment of the flower he represents. Its a real shame they didnt explore his story a bit more, every detail means something in a design. Love your wolf boy btw :D
When you said she looks like a knock-off Yu-Gi-Oh character, I felt my soul leave my body as every fiber of myself couldn't deny how *correct* you were.
Even though i don't watch the show's High Guardian Spice, Snapdragon is the only character made me wanna know them more of their arc story and their white iris made me curious if them and their family are from the different race that I don't know of. Thye could have made them a main character of the show but still oof. and your OC's design and the story lore wise is hella amazing!
Ahhhh yesssss!! I was so excited for this second part!! I really love your art and I love the fact you designed more than just the main four. I see onloy the main four a lot and I'd love to see what people's ideas on the OTHERS would be. Yes yes, this is so good. Your videos give me a whole bunch of motivation. Can't wait for more!
I like how you did Snapdragon, and yes we can headcanon & make a few things! but, I hope we can collectively agree that the way the character and struggle was represented wasn't very... good.. And definitely the best character! Makes me pretty sad honestly... Also the Ameryllas is my favorite one of all I think!! So appealing! 🥰 16:15 "pot" character? or did I hear it wrong?
ok....im here for the snapdragon and wolf bane ship like YESSSSSSS also i saw both videos and i love all of the designs. You gave all of the character's personailty instead of their old boring designs they have. Also ALSO, snapdragon is the best character in the show and i honestly wished that he had his own show :)
I seriously just- cannot get over your designs! They always look so amazing and the colors and designs are just trhdyshdsuekx Do you have any tips on how to make solid designs and color palletes?
Ik I’m not who you were asking, but I’d love to help! If possible, get an overall “aesthetic” in mind. I like to make collages of random items like fabrics, patterns, and props to help. That’s also a great way to come up with color scheme ideas. For example, I made a fox girl who’s a god of luck. I got pictures of statues, coins, candles, silks, etc. and put them on a board for a reference. Hope this helps!
Oh my gosh!! Snapdragon looked so wonderful here!! Honestly they have to be my favorite character from the whole series but it made me so upset to see their story treated so poorly.
I was kinda disappointed about the like 90% human population at the school, like it builds up this whole fantasy world with several species, I honestly expected the school environment to look more like the school from a centaurs life (great anime, highly recommend) where the school it’s a pretty consistent mix of centaurs, angels, cats, goats, and mermaids. And it’s a good display of how you can have different species interact and navigate a environment.
Man I am late asf to this boat. I just want to say how I am happy that I am not the only one who feels put off with how Snapdragon's story was handled. I at first assumed that Snapdragon was going to be a good character to teach a lesson to boys and men that liking feminine things is ok, it doesn't make you any less of a "man" (whatever being a "man" would mean-). It seems really odd to me how their way of making a budding Transgender story is to have the surrounding characters meant to be his friends, demasculate him to the point where it seems that the only way out is to transition into a woman. - Saying his father's axe he initially wanted to use "wasn't suited for him", like ??? THIS IS A BATTLE CLASS, HE'S HERE SO YOU CAN TEACH HIM- - Saying being friends with a girl is weird and it's effectively useless bc he's a boy (Which is weird af-) - Then the teacher not giving real advice and basically saying, "You can just Transformation magic lolololol". Like, Snapdragon doesn't even have the chance to look at himself to think about what he wants to be, because everyone is basically holding his hand and saying, "You'd be a pretty girl instead-". I just wish that SnapDragon was more of a "It's ok to be feminine, even as a guy" type story. P.S. Making him Genderfluid/NB is a much better take (Idek if I should say 'he' at that point then-)
Here from BlackLightJack. I felt the OG had a bare minium anime design. These designs have an anime-influnce, but do a great job mixing it with western fantasy. Really adds to it.
I love your art style and designs so much 😭😭😭 I personally think a really historically accurate fantasy story can be really fun to watch too, but a lot of stories can benefit from just having inspiration instead of being accurate lol
Bruh, I don't know how to feel about this, but, you're the first art channel that I actually enjoy listening to and getting inspiration for drawing. Keep up your work! Because I love everything you're putting out here
Really unique redesigns that for sure show more awareness in worldbuilding than this show ever did. The costume design is really awesome too, I love the sort of Musketeer look on Snapdragon's clothing.
THIS!! This is something I've been mostly complaining about the show. It presented itself as super diverse but we only see boring humans and elves everywhere. Other species aka races are barely seen in the background and it bothers me. I loved the redesigs
If you want an anime character that although haven't been labeled as ace canonically but is ace coded in both manga and show, let me introduce you to Saiki from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
For some reason, Wolf's Bane clothes give me a Water Tribe vibe XD. Aaaand, you inspired me to make an OC of my own. She's called Crow's Eye, she makes potions and poisons, and she has, like, a dozen of pet crows who follow her everywhere and do her bidding. She lets them sit on her head and shoulders. Even in class))
holy shit. ive been struggling recently with my identity exactly like in snapdragons part and it cleared a lot of things so thanks for sharing your story. Your designs are really eyecatching too
As a DnD player myself, a module that does a better job at a magical school is Strixhaven: A Cirriculum of Chaos. Has much more variety in races especially with the NPC students and also gives a couple reasons as to why classes of any variety would want to go to school
When I heard that Snapdragon was trans I had assumed that they where a trans guy who liked girly things and struggled to reconsile those to parts of themselves but then I found what the show's arc for them actually was and became a little uncomfortable. Idk but from experience being trans isn't about how you act it's what feels right
Hey I just wanted to say that this and the last video were very helpful for me, I also am making a Dnd type story thingy, and you brought a bunch of topics I should keep in mind when doing world building and character design so that they fit in with the world, so thank you for illuminating those parts of the story I should keep and eye for, also you art is very good and you are very good at explaining these kinda of things
I already saw your two videos of the HGS redesigns and the ideas you proposed about how it could have been a good series, now I wish I had seen it that way
• Amaryllis just straight-up looks like an outright villain here and I LOVE IT!!! Taking the Mean Girl stereotype and running with it to its logical extreme, but what I would wanna see is making her *seem* like the paint-by-numbers bitchy mean girl with trying to steer Sage and/or Rosemary (in a very underhanded or sinister way) only to reveal, probably by Snapdragon, she genuinely WAS looking out for them but also feels she just knows better than everyone else because of her upbringing or just never really confronted with how her attitude or mannerisms effect others. I would totally keep the brutal battle methods as just being the fastest and easiest way to deal with threats. [Forgot to add this; came up with it after I initially posted] I also like the idea of her being the one person who always stands up for Snap (sorta parallel to how Rosemary would always jump to fend off bullies for Sage growing up) and even having Snap argue that Ryll wants people to think she doesn’t care about them but she’d be the one beating herself up the most if she ever let someone else get hurt and didn’t try to save them. • Snapdragon, as I’ve said so many times before, already has a perfect role: he acts as a counterbalance to Ryll (maybe her closest/only friend and therefore acting kinda in the same gravity as Sage does for Rosemary, but reversed with Ryll being the one to stick up for him-as mentioned above) and Snap decides to prove his toxic masculinity family wrong about him by just being a femboy-I feel this is very important for Snapdragon’s arc by saying, if girls can be powerful and strong, like boys can be beautiful and delicate. Maybe he does kinda start out as a sexist bully in the vein of Cal because he was raised to believe that this is how “real men” are supposed to act and bottling up who he really was, but then gets told by Caraway or Sage or maybe someone else that only *he* should be allowed to define who he is and what real strength looks like. Personally, I’d love to see Snap beat down Cal to put him in his place but I think it’d be equally satisfying to see him just throw Cal’s own trash talk back in his face by refusing to fight and just telling him something like “It’s not my problem that you can’t deal with your own inadequacy” (basically calling Cal out for just lashing out because he can’t accept the fact he can’t overcome his own problems) - [Since I got the greenlight on this, I'll give some treatment for Wolf's Bane too--since he's my favorite design overall] For starters, I kinda want to integrate him with the story. I had a lot of ideas around him, though I wanted to keep the idea of him having affection for Snapdragon (possibly including him in a love triangle, depending on whether I want to keep Snap's crush on Sage or make them platonic friends but Wolf gets the wrong idea from their interactions) and I definitely want him to be a sort of unofficial 6th Ranger. One idea I'm not super confident with is maybe going in the opposite direction of the Lawful Stupid Paladin and, having lived so long without any real instruction, he mostly just defaults to the command of whoever tells him what to do. With everyone else having their own character arcs and seeing them overcome major flaws, it might be nice to see Wolf's Bane go from being totally subservient to anything that moves to growing into a more loyal, self-assertive warrior like what a true paladin would be. As a final note, I feel like it'd be kinda neat to have him be a much more extroverted character and basically have some inverse lesson of Malabar's though I feel like he'd be on good terms with the main group but treated more like a "school/work friend" where they'll hang out during school or missions but they're not close enough friends to hang out outside of that; at least at first. [this concludes the postscript continuation from my comment on Part 1]
That whole tangent about the gender identity and your family being so... *like that* speaks to me. Now I don't look like a guy, at least not facially. But I have everything else, from the build, the mannerisms, and the clothes. It's also taken a while to just embrace the feminine interests and identity, since I grew up dressing casual and rejecting all things pretty like make up and jewelry. Uh, point is. I'm happy to know I'm not alone on this and that you are happy with who you are now. Keep up with the great work! ❤ .
I love all the designs, they all toed the line of very nice to look at and also communicating facets of the characters story bad personality! Also, absolutely adored Wolfsbane and Snapdragon both, they look adorable and I couldn't stop gushing over the little fanart (?) Thingy you did of em. So soft!!!
ive never watched this show but the official designs look... childish. your redesigns are simply gorgeous and capture the characters so well. i especially like your take on amaryllis
i think they look childish because the style was supposed to be replicating the generic anime style but they kinda messed it up and made it look too cartoony?
I haven't seen this show but I adore your redesigns! I also wanted to mention how much I adore your oc/dnd character. He's very adorable and I love seeing more characters with earth toned palettes and characters with some type of disability! I'm a newer follower of yours and I can't wait to see more of your art!
Off topic but, how do you make your character in screen... Have different poses and expressions and *be consistent?* (Specially with a dresign like yours), do you just draw the character over and over or is there other technique to do it? ;w;
Tbh I always thought that snap was ftm and was having these issues because I had a lot of the same struggles while transitioning (yk the "oh men don't do that, men don't do this, you can't like dresses and makeup!" And it did kinda fall off that when the teacher brought up the transition magic but yk yk interpretation and all (I'm also aware this video is super old by now)
These designs are absoluty amazing! you gave them life and made them people!! (When you were talking about adventure shows and showed a bunch of titles, I was so happy that I had watched all of those shows and those are some of my favorites!)
As someone who makes OCs for fun for various shows and video games, I will say that your High Guardian Spice OC along with your redesigns look fantastic.
Man i am so glad to see more people here who agree that Snapdragon would have been better off as a gender fluid person. Like, nothing wrong with being trans, but personally when it comes to making a diverse cast, i would put one person out of each group, and since Caraway is already a confirmed trans, i would have preferred Snap to be a femme man. Mainly because i feel like when it comes to 'diversity', a guy that likes girly things is usually written of as trans or gay. Why can't we just have a cute delicate man who loves to take care of himself while still being a simple normal hetero? We already have masculine women (both straight and gay), why the double standard then? Men deserve to like anything they want without being pressured. No wonder the writers intended Snap to be trans, if everyone kept telling him he is not fit to be a man and basically saying that if he wants to have those things he likes, he needs to be a woman, period. Of course the poor dude will eventually transition out of sheer peer pressure, but he wont ever be completely happy with himself since thats not who he really feels he should be. Its less inclusive and more misogynistic in my opinion, like they are actively saying men suck and that women are da wae (which would not be surprising, considering that one person who worked on this show who hates men) Side note here, if i were to rewrite some of the show, i'd probably keep the part where that scumbag dude (forgot his name) mocked him on the boat for not being conventionally masculine - ik its a fantasy world but hey maybe he's from a different country where sexism is a thing. But i would keep it for the sole purpose of giving Snapdragon a development arc where he eventually grows into the feminine man he always wanted to be, who then proceeds to beat the snot out of the guy who made fun of him all those years back, proving that even though he is not traditionally masculine, he is still very much a powerful man. Ya know, moment of power!! Would also be hella cool if in that arc Snapdragon also discovers to use whatever powers he has (i love the idea of him being a different species, like, SO MUCH, THANK YOU, its in my head now) and uses it in the battle with his former bully, going all out, proud of who he is. Also, think of the potential for visuals, ahhhh!! Also, that bastard kinda gives off vicious bully vibes, like maybe somewhere along the way he would betray the school and shit, like ya kno, a villain in the making or a traitor - which would make Snap kicking his ass all the more neat, since he'd technically be defeated by something he once believed to be so far below him. Plus i like despicable villains getting a well deserved beat down >.>' Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk, im sorry for the rant :'D just wanted to say i absolutely love all of your redesigns, and that i would have absolutely watched every episode if it became a series. The designs are gorgeous and the potential is at an all time high. I also wanted to know if i could perhaps make a lil bit of fanart for your Snap? Since i love the redesign so much 💕
oh, oh i am OBSESSED with amaryllis’s redesign oh my god. i have such a weak spot for smug, grinny characters and i LOVE how you pulled that off with her *chef’s kiss*
17:55 I thought I was the only one ... I drew genderbent art of amaryllis, parsley, the tiefling teacher lady, and sage... meant to say that I like boys better but to see that they actually like them is uh... I too dunno how to feel about that
2:35 Agreed. There are a lot of races in the dnd world so you think they would take advantage of that but no. The Legend of Vox Machina took advantage of it.
I feel bad for snapdragon, his backstory could've been so much more explored, I kind of see myself in him, my whole life I have felt this strange pressure to act more girly and that I wasn't girly enough, to be fair, I consider myself very girly but still, it was like something was missing, it took some time but now I embrace myself just how I am and it doesn't make me less of a woman.
I *love* these designs. And I agree, Snapdragon is the best character. Thanks for doing them justice where the show did them dirty. Edit: Also, I only just met your OC and I already ship him with Snapdragon so hard
In the show I was just generaly unhappy with the monster desings. They're boring or outright ugly Also love your redesings! It gives them so much more personality!
I never watched the show but I love your designs and even watched some clips to understand a bit about the show and the characters so that I could fully enjoy your redesigns. They have been great and a MASSIVE upgrade from the shows designs. And dude your Snapdragon looks so beautiful and fabulous I am in love
I think snapdragons story would best play out as it had in season 1 but if the show were ever to get a season 2 that SD would try to go trans but ultimately discover that being a feminine man was what’s best for him. Not non-binary, but he would keep his original outfit and then change to the one you’re showing here Edit: wow now I’m self inserting SD is really a fill in the blank huh
I also forgot to say please stop telling me my designs are to hard to animate I know that but also there kinda not I mean there are many shows and movies with complicated styles or characters and there still able to do it like look at hazbin and helluvaboss they where able to do it and it looks great
They wouldn't be that complicated to animate if its animated via tweening i believe so i think it's really still doable
@@justausername5749 ik Chowder had a lot of cloth patterns that look great!
They would NOT be complicated to animate. Lol
This is literally not any harder than the original designs XD
I’ve seen redesigns that have gone above and beyond crazy with their redesigns. Designs that you couldn’t hope to animate in your lifetime.
Your designs are no harder than animating Voltron characters. (If you don’t get what I mean, look up their designs.)
Edit: Or like She-Ra!
Like “men if you’re super emotional and like feminine things, give up pretending that you’re a man because we all know you’re a woman.”
Like it’s a super toxic mindset being presented as progressive, it’s seriously alarming.
Something about villains/bad kids in heels is just the best like the click clack of there shoes as they walk and everyone going silent is ✨GOLD✨
Love Amaryllis' design! It suits her so much better than the generic pink witch outfit they gave her
Thank you and yeah my roomate wouldnt stop talking about it 😂 she was so mad at the outfit and id completely forgotten what it even looked like since we only saw it once
The redesigned Amaryllis is my new obsession.
I know no one will agree with me but I actually don't mind her having a pink color scheme in one of her outfits. It would maybe reveal a softer side that is what people would least expect. I'm just not a fan of the relentlessly goth like type personally.
She looks more like a villain
This is such a perfect explanation for this! Thank you!
Oh my God I have not ever agreed to something so much
This so is just so blatantly s3xist it's so damaging.
For me, Girls can wear masculine outfits and they have a word for it (Tomboy) so why can't boys
Snap dragon is the only character the writers could actually write sorta well, they should have been the main character 😔
Yeah i was really surprised my friends where all like huh is it me or is snapdragon getting more of a story arc than the main cast but when we got to the end we were all so confused my roomate even more so she was was so convinced snapdragon was gonna be nonbinary
@HypnoSpace Outlaw true
No, if they had focused on Snapdragon they would have most likely been butchered sadly.
They ruined him when they decided to make the message "if you as a biological male have feelings and emotions then you have to be a trans woman."

Finally someone put it in words! Snapdragon's storyline really rubbed me the wrong way, and know I understand why.
It'll just make her uncomfortable."
In spirit, it's a nice gesture, to avoid putting me in uncomfortable situations and not force me to come up with some weird excuse to not go, but it messed me up, not gonna lie.

Thank you alot of my ocs are boys mostly as an outlet but yeah I'm a huge fan of mixed cast character's its always more fun to see how they all interact with one another
"I'm masculine but I'm still a girl"
Woah someone feels how I feel! Thank you for saying that- that hit me so hard [in a good way lol]
How is it that some random RUclipsr managed to write a better storyline for this show?! You are amazing 💫💫💫
I feel like we dont get to see that often :/
Their always in the end gay or trans which isnt bad but i want some guys in these shows to be a guy that just like girly things and is just an ally (supports LGBTQ+) ig
I absolutely ADORE your redesign for Snapdragon, they look amazing. It makes me love them even more than I already did.
I literally was just watching part 1 before this came out, can't wait to watch it!
Me too XD
The lord presented us with proper and beautiful character desings once again to fiest our eyes upon
Aaaa good soup
😂😂😂 only meme I can remember about food
@@LovesArt23 😂😂😂
Wolf's Bane and SnapDragon are now my OTP, and I will be making thousands of fanarts of them! 😌👌
Thank you he was always a fun character to play with my old party and oh stop 😳😳😳 but yes I would love to see fanart of them 😂😂😂
I love the redesigns so much!
SNAP LOOKS SO STUNNINGGG YOUR ART IS SO BEAUTIFUL
I also really likes the headcannon that snap is an effeminate guy and not trans because it adds so much more to his character but oh well we're not the creator
I knoe this video is super old, but wolfs bane seems adorable !! I would kill for him to be a canon character hes so cool
16:15 "pot" character? or did I hear it wrong?
I believe they said “poc” which stands for “person of color!”
ok....im here for the snapdragon and wolf bane ship like YESSSSSSS also i saw both videos and i love all of the designs. You gave all of the character's personailty instead of their old boring designs they have. Also ALSO, snapdragon is the best character in the show and i honestly wished that he had his own show :)
I ADORE THESE SO MUCH WAOWOWIWKW I love Snap especially, the color pallet you gave them was absolutely beautiful but they’re all so beautiful
I seriously just- cannot get over your designs! They always look so amazing and the colors and designs are just trhdyshdsuekx
Do you have any tips on how to make solid designs and color palletes?
Ik I’m not who you were asking, but I’d love to help!
If possible, get an overall “aesthetic” in mind. I like to make collages of random items like fabrics, patterns, and props to help. That’s also a great way to come up with color scheme ideas.
For example, I made a fox girl who’s a god of luck. I got pictures of statues, coins, candles, silks, etc. and put them on a board for a reference. Hope this helps!
@@moody_boos I'm like 2 months late to this but thanks! Very helpful
Congratulations on getting your redesigns retweeted! :D
Thank you its still crazy to me that he even looked at it 👀 like wha thinking about it still makes me nervous 😓😂😂😂😂
16:07 that is literally so cute. I would prefer Snapdragon with your OC than with Sage because things with her aren’t that good…
I didn’t think it was physically possible to love snapdragon even more but here we are
Amaryllis kinda looks like someone used blackfire for a D&D character and I love it
Man I am late asf to this boat.
THIS IS A BATTLE CLASS, HE'S HERE SO YOU CAN TEACH HIM-
- Saying being friends with a girl is weird and it's effectively useless bc he's a boy (Which is weird af-)
- Then the teacher not giving real advice and basically saying, "You can just Transformation magic lolololol".
I love your art style and designs so much 😭😭😭
I personally think a really historically accurate fantasy story can be really fun to watch too, but a lot of stories can benefit from just having inspiration instead of being accurate lol
I loved the reference to the Del Toro HellBoy trilogy. " I'm fireproof you're not." HellBoy.
Thank God I'm not the only one absolutely AGITATED By Amirillys's bangs
Bruh, I don't know how to feel about this, but, you're the first art channel that I actually enjoy listening to and getting inspiration for drawing.
Keep up your work! Because I love everything you're putting out here
Your version of Snapdragon reminds me of Oscar from Rose of Versailles. I like it since it gives a more regal aura that fits the nobility background.
The way you do lineart is so new and borderline alien to me but I love it so much-
It's so cool to see!
Your designs are really eyecatching too
My favorite redesign has to be Snap Dragon's it honestly reminds me of a certain cookie from Cookie Run Kingdoms.
Aghbmf.
The idea of seeing a slimeboi redesign is making me excited. I hope you do it!
I absolutely LOVE these redesigns, they are all so pretty and way more visually interesting than what the show presented.
Dude, I'm so excited to see how you designed some of my favorite characters from my least favorite series.
This was a awesome part 2 of a very interesting video! The Snapdragon one was SO cool!!! 🤩🤩❤️
Snapdragon is my favorite now. They're just so gorgeous! That redesign is amazing 💖
Personally, I’d love to see Snap beat down Cal to put him in his place but I think it’d be equally satisfying to see him just throw Cal’s own trash talk back in his face by refusing to fight and just telling him something like “It’s not my problem that you can’t deal with your own inadequacy” (basically calling Cal out for just lashing out because he can’t accept the fact he can’t overcome his own problems)
- [Since I got the greenlight on this, I'll give some treatment for Wolf's Bane too--since he's my favorite design overall] For starters, I kinda want to integrate him with the story.
You can give your thoughts on wolfsbane hes a character I haven't really developed since he was an old character I used for a Halloween dnd campaign
.
@@sallyisbestgirl6908 that indeed seems to be the case
I haven't seen this show but I adore your redesigns! I also wanted to mention how much I adore your oc/dnd character. He's very adorable and I love seeing more characters with earth toned palettes and characters with some type of disability! I'm a newer follower of yours and I can't wait to see more of your art!
Snapdragon is so pretty, deserves a better show XD
Off topic but, how do you make your character in screen... Have different poses and expressions and *be consistent?* (Specially with a dresign like yours), do you just draw the character over and over or is there other technique to do it? ;w;
(When you were talking about adventure shows and showed a bunch of titles, I was so happy that I had watched all of those shows and those are some of my favorites!)
... now i ship snapdragon x your oc.
OMG THEY LOOK ADORABLE TOGETHER
Its less inclusive and more misogynistic in my opinion, like they are actively saying men suck and that women are da wae (which would not be surprising, considering that one person who worked on this show who hates men)
Side note here, if i were to rewrite some of the show, i'd probably keep the part where that scumbag dude (forgot his name) mocked him on the boat for not being conventionally masculine - ik its a fantasy world but hey maybe he's from a different country where sexism is a thing.
Plus i like despicable villains getting a well deserved beat down >.>'
Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk, im sorry for the rant :'D just wanted to say i absolutely love all of your redesigns, and that i would have absolutely watched every episode if it became a series.
I too dunno how to feel about that
2:35
Agreed.
The redesigns are brilliant
If you’re looking for an asexual protagonist, look no further than "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K". It’s on Netflix.
In the show I was just generaly unhappy with the monster desings. They're boring or outright ugly
Also love your redesings!
Not non-binary, but he would keep his original outfit and then change to the one you’re showing here
Edit: wow now I’m self inserting SD is really a fill in the blank huh
