- Here we discuss a way of lighting head to toe green screen with mostly indirect lighting sources. There are direct sources lighting the actors, but the 20x20 green is light primarily with bounced light, with the exception of an 850 Celeb on the key side. With DP, Chris Gonzalez and gaffer Alan Steinheimer in the role of Key Grip:)

5:54 Magenta gels on scratch lights YES!!! I've never understood why I'd never seen more people think to do this!! No matter how good you light it theres always that reflectance / spill which I've always particularly hated around stubble on men's jawbones / chins etc etc. Damn I love your channel Luke. Such a better option than relying on a light wrap fix in post, though I get the best results when I composite a very subtle light wrap in post too above any spill suppression / filters.
Just like every tutorial you upload, this is clear, super-detailed and incredibly useful for learning how to execute real world solutions to what (as you explain) are common production briefs. Outstanding!

Right on, man! Yeah, we kinda over did it, but we weren’t exactly sure what they were going to throw at us so that’s why we went with the indirect lighting approach:) Keep firing up those Kinos and the Skypanels will come!
It's so fun to see the evolution. 2K Fresnels, then a bunch of Kino's, then Kino's with Green Bulbs (yikes!), now SkyPanels into Ultrabounce. Fun stuff. (am I old if I remember each of these phases...)

I am a sound guy and lighting has never been my thing. But in 2018 I started making instructional videos at work using screen captures. But for one of them I realized it really needed the mouse and keyboard visible so I thought I would green screen it in. I laid green paper on the desk and recorded the top down view as I captured the screen demo. This worked ok but... fundamental error you all spotted already... the green surface is too close (and lit the same as the mouse) to the hand on the mouse and I simply could not edit out the green edges on my hand with my learning mode edit skills. By now I know that I should be able to enable a motion tracker on the hand and adjust the color to reduce or remove the green edges. Maybe in the 4th week of lockdown I will have time to fiddle with it 😉. I work IT so I am busy helping other people work remotely in between editing corporate event videos that have been waiting in the wings for a bit.
Good on you, David! It’s fun to have an opportunity to try aspects of work outside one’s comfort zone. Then you find it’s just new problems to solve, which is actually quite doable. I know just enough about sound to be dangerous😂

You can purchase a 20x20 green or any size you want from any of the grip manufacturers or specialty motion picture fabric businesses like The Rag Place or LA Rag House. There are others who specialize in fabrics and nets, but you can get things from American, Modern, Matthews, and Norms too. If you want more ties/grommets or a a more custom size, like 20x30 (because you’ll be doing more head to toe framing) it’s best to go with a specialty company. Hope that helps!
I love your videos!! Is this a Matthews 20'x20' green screen? I'm in the market for a roughly 20x20 green screen and ideally I can place it on a curtain track so it can be put to the side when we're not using it. Any recommendations?
I would call a few places like LA Rag House, The Rag Place, and Canvas Grip, companies that makes large textiles to order. Tell them how you plan to use the green screen as a curtain and ask them how they would recommend you proceed. Go with the company that makes you feel the most confident they will deliver in line with your timing and budget.
Just chiming in to say canvas grip is amazing as Luke said, I highly recommend them !

Thanks for sharing. Is there a preference for lighting green screens with tungsten over daylight or vice versa? If you properly match the sensor to the lamps it shouldn’t matter, right?

I really enjoyed the video. I'm curious though, I didn't see a sample of the true 'head to toe' look. I recently did a shoot and the client requested head to toe and I was struggling with the shadows directly underneath the subject. I basically fixed the problem by just pumping a bunch of light at the subject's feet. I didn't really know any other way to fix it. Thoughts?
Ah, that’s why we went with the bounces... the softest approach possible. Yes, sometimes you just end up pounding light in to the shadows, especially when “furniture” is involved. The trick is not to create new shadows... thus, pound soft light into the offending area:)

Glasses are always a potential issue for green screen or regular lighting. If anything, this type of approach is softer and better suited for talent wearing glasses.

It’s a common question! If you are able to order from LA check out all the usual suspects who can fabricate this for you: American, Norm’s, Modern, LA Rag House, The Rag Place. If you want a certain size, just ask. I got mine from LA Rag House in a group order with other folks to share the shipping. Hope that helps!
Luke Seerveld very helpful and I found it on modern and the cheapest shipping $120 was more than the floppy $115. The search continues. That leads me to my next question. What would you charge for a 10min consult over the phone? I shoot 4-5 vids a week from the same location that is a lighting nightmare for me.
Yup, I sorta have that issue too, so we either find someone who is driving that way already or figure that that item costs what it costs until we’re willing to diy it:(
As far as consulting goes, you could try the Patreon route... if you don’t like the options I currently offer, you could suggest a better one!
Luke Seerveld I mean to actually pay you for your time. The patreon route is very generous of you but I have an issue that is effecting my performance output and I wouldn’t want to cheap you. I will give you a ring the first part of next week and hopefully we can discuss some options. I have a very low natural light situation that I’m forced to shoot in with yellow walls that casts green into the skin that is next to impossible to get out without massive headaches in post.
