    I’ve grown citrus trees in containers over the past 25 years in North Carolina with success and failures. I have also watched RUclips videos for several years and this is by far the best and most informative video I have ever seen on growing citrus trees. I just wished I could have watched it sooner but since I have some citrus trees on the way, I will definitely apply all of this guys suggestions.

    I went to Japan last year and fell in love with Yuzu, a citrus fruit that kind of tastes like a mix of lemon, orange, and lime. When I couldn't find it anywhere in the states I decided to grow it. I appreciate this video because I am desperate to keep this tree alive.

    I have a 14 year old Meyer lemon that produces a huge crop every other year with smaller crops in between. As many as 100 lemons in a 15 gallon pot. I’m in the mid Hudson Valley NY. I’ve found that if you give them partial shade before they come in for the winter they don’t drop leaves. I’ve got 2 kumquats, a ponderosa and Buddha hand lemon from Logee’s-all just 2-3 years old. I have fruit on all of them. I use Jobes citrus fertilizer. I find citrus fun and fairly easy. I actually have 35 citrus plants from seed that winter in my basement with just light from glass doors. They enjoy the cool winter more than coming in the house and have no bug issues. My fruiting ones go there when they are done with fruit or have none, too young etc. as far as seed grown most citrus are polyembryonic so they have at least one exact copy of the parent in each of their seed. Some take only 2-4 years to produce, like key lime or satsuma. Some like grapefruit can take 30 years. I just love them for their beauty even if they don’t ever produce fruit. If I really want fruit I buy a grafted plant.
    Bug issues are definitely mites and scale. I use Neem to keep them under control for the winter and when they go out in the spring two applications of Neem and the wasps and other predators then take care of them for the summer.

    Great info. I have had a Meyer Lemon for 3-4 years. I’m in zone 7 and keep it outside from April to October-December. I bring it in before temperatures drop below 45 degrees. Mites affected it the first 2 years once I would bring it inside. A quick rinse in the bathtub with a strong spray of water helps to get rid of the mites. For the last year or two, I spray it with the garden hose under all of the leaves and the mites no longer appear inside the house. These are wonderful little trees and aren’t too finicky.

    I have three small lemon plants in 1 terracotta pot standing on a windowsill facing east. They are about 1 year old. Grew them from seed and didn't expect anything to happen, but now they look like very happy and healthy plants, although still small. To prevent all 3 getting the same problem at the same time, I guess it would be better to give them each their own pot. Not sure if I can wait 35 years to smell the first flowers, if I can keep them alive that long. (Netherlands)

    I grew up in Florida with citrus trees in our yard but now live in Colorado and have created quite the citrus balcony garden. Currently growing lemons, yuzu, centennial and nagami kumquats, and Cara Cara oranges. Definitely agree on all the points made in the video. However, every winter, even with preventative neem oil treatments before bringing them inside, at least one of the plants will get a spider mite issue, but I’ve always been able to successfully get rid of the issue and save the plant. The root disease thing I’ve dealt with most from my kumquats, particularly the Centennial kumquats, and it will kill the plant FAST. I lost one this winter, in fact, to it and it went from healthy looking to completely dead in about one week. The leaf drop in winter is always disappointing as you bring them in with all this new, fresh, green growth, and they slowly look bare and sad, but as he stated, as long as you are measured and diligent in watering, it’ll bounce back the next season. The most insane thing with them in my area is that they always like to flower in early spring while I still have them indoors. The smell in the house of the blooms is amazing, but I have to ‘be the bee’ and pollinate the flowers with a Q Tip to set the fruit before bringing them back outdoors in May.

    Thank you for this video! I have a lemon tree that I have been growing for about 6 years. I have it in a large pot. In the summer it takes on water like crazy. I have to water it daily when it is in full sun outdoors. I get leaf drop in the fall when I bring it in. Although this year at a new home I brought it in and put it in a western window. A few weeks after bringing it in I had 50+ blooms on it. The fragrance filled the entire home. It was beautiful. But then I got no fruit from the blooms. I would love to know why some blooms produce fruit and others do not. I also got leaf drop after moving it to a new spot in my home. It is brighter, but the leaves dropped after watering more heavily. I let the water come out the bottom holes and I normally don’t let it water that heavily in winter. I should have stuck to my norm. It still looks healthy but oh one other thing, is the thorns. It grows long thorns. I have read that this might be that it is the root plant that is doing this but I think it is on almost all the trunks. I am wondering if my plant died off and the root plant with all the thorns is flowering and is onto producing fruit because it was not the plant I bought if that makes sense. That the root plant took over and my plant I purchased is no longer there.

I took my calamondin inside in December, and, sadly, it has lost all its leaves and fruits by now...so I just hope it will come back as days are getting longer, and I can move it back outside as soon as temperatures stay above 10 degrees Celsius....hope it'll survive as I love the taste of those tiny oranges...very nice. Losing leafs and fruits happens because the circumstances inside are very different from outside: moisture, temperature. I take my citrus inside in oktober and put it in front of the wide OPEN window in my bedroom. Once a week I close the window 5 cm and when I close it at the end almost fully, all the leaves and fruits are still there.

    Mites wise, I know a lot of people in Florida have found some success with planing their citrus under oak canopies. Florida, especially in the south has had serious issues with the rust mites to a point that most people don’t even attempt to plant them anymore. But for some reason, planting them under oaks seems to help with the issue. I haven’t seen research on it yet but I think I’m cooler climates you should be able to go out in the falls and collect oak leaves and make a tea from them that you can dilute and water with. This should give the same effect.

    I had a lemon and a grapefruit growing in pots for about five years, started it from seeds, they never bloomed :( One unfortunate day they froze to death 😢 I bought a small lemon tree from Home Depot two years ago, and now I have a happy tree that bloomed multiple times and even harvested one full grown lemon off of it! It had couple of problems though, first spider mites, I got rid of them by constantly blowing them off with water in a shower, it helped! No more little bustards! Another time because radiator heat and untimely watering I lost all of the foliage except 2 leaves 🙀
    But it got recovered, grew many many new leaves in last spring and I’m ready for a new bloom season and hopefully harvest time! Don’t overwater it, but let it drink enough, and keep away from cold window and heat, they a bit moody I can say. But flowers smell heavenly! 🤙🏼

      Transition from seedling vegetative stage to reproductive fruiting stage is variable, It can be hastened by never pruning the uppermost part of the plant. The top of the tree enters the fruiting stage first.Any top growth removed will need to re-grow before the process towards maturity can resume. Maintaining good health and vigor will accelerate the mature phase. I've had Citrus begin first fruiting at 5-6 years of age from seed.

    I planted orange and lemon seeds together by mistake. The trees have grown together to about 4ft. the orange tree is taller than the lemon tree. Should I separate them ?? I also notice at the top of the orange one leaf that has curled up not down. I checked the entire plant for any infestation and found none. Its in a plastic container. Its 2yrs.old and its outdoor where its getting full sun and rainwater. I fertilize it with one made for citrus trees. My concern is that one leaf. Its not discolored in any way abd there's lots of new growth as well. I started this plant from store bought fruit. Any tips would be appreciated. I will have to bring it indoors come fall. Ive been spraying with organic sprays which have slowed it down but haven't eradicated the problem. its super frustrating

      I think the challenge with giving advice on leaf color change is that it could be quite a number of issues/challenges with the plant; so....I would be reluctant to give advice without knowing more information. Lemon trees in particular will want the most light that you can give them. If you grow them outdoors on a patio and then give them medium light, they most definitely will start losing their leaves. Part of the reasons why I don't grow much citrus indoors is that I would want to give them more optimal light than I can give them in my space.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes 4 года назад

      I wonder if it could be thrips or mites. Certain thrips, especially young ones, are light green flecks and can start to scrape leaf tissue ... Spider mites can also create stippling, and if on young leaves just emerging, can warp the leaves. Most are not visible with the naked eye. You'd need a loupe/magnifying lens to really see them.

It has gone through some periods of intense growth (it was over 6 feet tall at one point), heavy pruning, and complete leaf drop, but it's still alive and growing just fine. No blooms though. 15 years and never a single sign of a bloom. The main reason I wanted to grow a lemon tree was for the scent of the flowers. I had seen one at a greenhouse, and it had a ton of flowers on it, and the lemons were the size of grapefruits. The trunk on mine is nearly an inch or more wide at the base. I have trimmed it back to a few feet tall only. At this point I might just buy a commercially grown one that is already in bloom, and maybe pot them together? Seems way more rewarding to buy one for 30$ that is already established than to grow one from seed. If what he says is true it may be another decade before I see flowers on mine, which is really disappointing. I had heard from many people that it can take "up to" 10 years. Some of the leaves on it are almost 7 inches long, and 4 inches wide.

      Just curious it’s been a year, did you buy a commercially grown lemon tree so you can grow lemons? I just bought my first one, it’s small and I need to repot it, but I am so happy to have one finally!!

    Thank you Summer very informative. I have one question, can I spray my citrus tree with the neem oil/dish soap/water mixture while the tree is flowering? I am going to try the blast of water first but wanted to have a second plan ready to go. Thanks.

    I planted lemon seeds and now I have a lemon tree and I can say that it has been growing for about 9 months and I must say that I am in London and the weather is not very good and now that it is November I brought it to the room and I know that it needs a lot of sun which we don't have but Its leaves are falling and I don't know why? And one question, how much water does it need in winter? Thank you

    Love the video, is there any advice on the ratio of the soil medium used. I hear Moss, perlite and vermiculite but is there a ratio you could advise?

    Did they mention how many hours of direct sunlight they need to survive or flower? Or did I just miss it?

    One has baby fruits at only about 1 ft tall.
    I am curious to see if it grows full size instead of a dwarf.

    So, why is it that my meyer lemon tree is losing its leaves but it is flowering? I know being inside my house is a factor, but it still has flowers but no foliage growth.

    So interesting, as always! I'm wondering about sunlight? I assume citrus requires a full day of full sun indoors, so south facing window only? Probably not a plant for me in that case ... :-(

    • @BrookeandBaby
      @BrookeandBaby 2 года назад

      Yes but you can get a pendant light / grow light for artificial lighting while it’s inside if you don’t have a south facing window with good light!

    Great video...thank you. I thought my 2 Meyers needed a new pot but when I took them out to repot them, I realized they had root rot just like the picture you had on film ...many roots fell off but some roots were still healthy or at least I thought so. I cleaned off the old soil and cleaned the remaining roots with a water spray and put them back in the nursery pot with new potting soil. Is there any coming back from root rot? One is flowering now and both fruited this past season. I also have red mites on the same plants which was another reason for new soil. I love citrus but for me it’s a work in progress. I live in CT and hopefully I’m going to Logee’s soon🌷 I missed your visit and I had the book.

      I do find citrus challenging myself! If I had a patio/balcony, it would be a no-brainer, but trying to grow them exclusively indoors can be a challenge!

    I'm desperate of my lemon tree, it's just recent when I decided to put it indoor and before putting indoor I watered it fully, like the water was draining down, then after few weeks, Im not sure if it needs water or not but the leaves are falling, it's not yellow but green, but looks like the vains are discoloring and turning to Yellow, I'm not sure what is wrong exactly.. 😟 I need help..

    Mites....in the cannabis community they are a nightmare. Almost as bad as aphids sometimes. We use a great product called 'Lost Coast Plant Therapy'. It's natural, and works on insects, and powdery mildew.. While I would consider Neem a good product, I would only use it as a last resort, and never when a plant is in flower. You don't wanna risk ingesting neem.

    • @origamiSnow
      @origamiSnow 4 года назад

      -give it lots of light
      -let it dry out between waterings
      -plant it small
      -neem oil/hose to prevent pests
      -prune top to keep bushy
