We aren't far removed from this, but I remember back in 2020 when the mask mandates were in full force during COVID. The only place you could go and take off your mask in public was the table.
You would have to wear your mask to get there, but once you were at the table with your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers or associates, you would take off your mask. The Table unmasks us all, and unmasks all of us.
There is vulnerability at the table.
There is transparency at the table.
There is relationship at the table.
There is community at the table.
When we approach the table seeking God, it can be very tempting to come to him wearing a mask. Many of us still do it today. We are tempted to approach God not as we are, but as others would have us be.
We have been wearing mask long before they were ever mandated in 2020 and many of us are still wearing them today. Social media is a mask. Religion is a mask. Money is a mask. Arrogance is a mask. Adam and Eve hid behind fig leaves, but we hide behind masks. Our mask just look different.
I am welcome at the table.
You are welcome at the table.
We are welcome at the table.
