There were a lot of scammers collecting money for the Maui victims, but then keeping the money for themselves.
Government doesn't care
Nope. They don't. It doesn't affect them. They didn't care when they colonized the island and slaughtered it's native people and their rulers.
In most cases you can at least see how colonization has helped at least advance the technology of a civilization and make their lives better in the very distant future.
But there is none of that with Hawaii. They would have been better to have been left alone.
Then again, if the US didn't colonize them, they definitely would have been anexxed by Japan in World War 2. Or the US would have recognized the risk if Japan had a base that close to the US.
People don't realize Midway is actually part of the leeward Hawaiian Islands. And look at how hard the US and Japan fought for that.
Imagine battles many times larger taking place in Maui or Oahu.
It seems their fate is sealed just by virtue of where they are.

I did a satellite view of Lahaina and I fell apart. I remember traveling down Front St., buying crocs, eating pizza, admiring the galleries, to just seeing burned spots and tearing up. I am sorry to those who lost homes and loved ones to suicide. ❤❤. I’m praying for all of you.

Whenever we gathered to beg for reasonable land management on Oahu, it was clear that nobody stood with the A'ina who had a future with a home and a job in it. Or friends. Everyone comfortable was comfortable with the ecocide.
Last time I checked, the government in that area never helped the people when the fire started. The cops there did nothing to help.

Short term rentals should not be permitted in residential neighborhoods. It is turning a residential property into a commercial property in violation of zoning codes. This industry has been the single largest factor on home price increases, with many purchases being made by corporations for the specific short term rental industry. I live in florida and let me just say that my normally quiet neighborhood has lost its charm since the pandemic and cash buyers started buying up any home the moment they hit the market. We now have new neighbors constantly coming and going, and with many only being here for a drunken week filled party that disrupts the whole neighborhood. From january 1st through april it is not a nice place to live.

And things should be taken care of in a manner that respects those affected by the fire including those who didn't live in that vicinity but worked there. Helping them would be a drop in the bucket compared to what is going on with the illeg's.
Only migrants from Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti I think are given those vouchers.

People buying up homes for STR’s caused a huge shortage of homes in a market where there’s a very limited amount of land and therefore a limited amount inventory. High demand and low inventory made prices skyrocket.
If STR’s are banned, it will cause home prices to drop. It won’t be cheap, but it will be cheaper and more affordable than it is now.
Anyone who says otherwise has their head buried in the sand… and likely owns STR’s and wants to keep exploiting the situation, at the detriment of its people.
Also, hotels and resorts don’t buy residential homes, they can’t even BUILD resorts and hotels in residential zones.
This was their plan all along... where was the president yall voted for?

grandfather in the 30’s, me in the 70’s, Hawaiis 2 biggest mistakes. 1 becoming a state. 2 letting non-natives buy land.
The Hawaiian Kingdom didn’t become a state, only AMERICANS were allowed to vote on statehood, Hawaiians weren’t allowed, that was part of the US’s requirements to vote, must be American.
A plebiscite vote (statehood) is only supposed to be voted on by the citizens of the country wishing to be absorbed, but in our case it was the opposite (& illegal). Also the US held the vote, only the government of the country wishing to be absorbed is allowed to hold votes and elections. The US cannot hold votes and elections in foreign countries, regarding foreign affairs, especially not votes and elections regarding the statehood of a foreign country, where only Americans are allowed to vote.

My grandfather was there 4yrs with an engineering team. Cameras were rare but he had photos and diagrams from the team, primitive. The big thing’ was the Hotel that had just happened. I was mostly on the big island over 2 yrs. You could sleep in the parks and camps for 2 weeks, and then only move 20ft. If you wanted to stay. Hilo was growing. Most importantly thank you for realizing that non-natives buying land has been detrimental not only to Hawaiians, but also to Hawai’i in general… that’s another thing Americans like to ignore, because they benefit greatly from being able to buy stollen lands.

Yeah, the days of camping wherever you want are long gone, gone before I was even born actually… must have been nice. I envy older people who got to see a side of my homelands that I will never be able to experience. I was just thinking about how Hawai’i has changed, how it’s unrecognizable to the Hawai’i I grew up in & how it’s sad that our children will never know that Hawai’i, especially O’ahu, which is basically a mix of California, Tokyo and Manila at this point… everything bulldozed and covered in cement… parking lots, strip malls, box chain stores and fast food joints. Gone is the lush landscape and the sweet floral scented air, gone even are the Hawaiians, replaced by Asians and Caucasians exploiting the Hawaiian cultural, language and people for financial gain to the tourists.
No, the Hawaiian Kingdom is actually the real name of Hawai’i, the internationally recognized sovereign country that the US illegally invaded & illegally overthrew (they admitted to this so I’m not just making it up or being radical lol).

Good point but don't underestimate the severe impact of Air BnB the business has created a lack of inventory for renting driving rental prices up. If you banned the BnB scam then out of necessity rent prices would decline and there would be available places on the market. That protection of renters would be a good step in the right direction and possibly correct the hyper inflation in the housing market.@@GregLakatosChradm

Short term rentals is running a business in a residential area; profiting the second home owner at the expense of the neighbors. I can go on and on with specific examples, but the net effect is like dragging a huge rotting carcass into a neighborhood and expecting the neighbors to like it. You can't tell people how to use their second home, but that use should be limited to non paying guests.
Vacation rentals have decimated housing everywhere & the swarm of locusts that rent them have no respect for the beauty of the places they "visit." The home of my tribe has been decimated as well. E hana pono. No ka oi.🤙🌴🌊
