Saw him do this a capella at Nassau Community College Folk Festival as an encore about a decade ago. Silenced the entire audience. I think he may have been the most powerful interpreter of songs of his generation.
Beautiful. I was lucky enough to have met Richie a number of years ago and speak with him for a little while. A gracious, kind man. I did fanboy out and ask for an autograph, which I still have.
He was once at Seasongood Pavillion here in Cincinnati. Solo, outdoor amphitheater. FREE! The mayor used to do a free series. It was perfection they way he massaged the words, so emotionally rich. Left us speechless as well.❤️Bless you Richie!
@@ordinarymystic2479 I thought you meant that; it's just that 'transitioning' now is such a political word, that conjures up all sorts of demented crap...
Magnificent. Saw this beautiful soul at Seasongood Pavilion in Cincy. Solo, this was the last song. He was incredibly gifted and an old soul. Loved him dearly.🌹
There is no doubt in my mind that this slowed down version has far more soul, largely due to Richie's voice, and the woodwind arrangement is just sublime. Check out the title track from the Wishing Well album too if you aren't already familiar.
I seen him preform this at the Arc in Ann Arbor Mich was amazing . i also was able to see him a couple of times talk to him and get his autograph on some of his old albums what a great man he was .
On the turning away From the pale and downtrodden And the words they say Which we won't understand "Don't accept that what's happening Is just a case of others' suffering Or you'll find that you're joining in The turning away" It's a sin that somehow Light is changing to shadow And casting it's shroud Over all we have known Unaware how the ranks have grown Driven on by a heart of stone We could find that we're all alone In the dream of the proud On the wings of the night As the daytime is stirring Where the speechless unite In a silent accord Using words you will find are strange And mesmerized as they light the flame Feel the new wind of change On the wings of the night No more turning away From the weak and the weary No more turning away From the coldness inside Just a world that we all must share It's not enough just to stand and stare Is it only a dream that there'll be No more turning away?
At the fiddle fest in Bushnell park for free. Arlo opened the show. This was the show stopper. The whole crowd went silent. Night had fallen. Can't imagine a dry eye in the house.
You are so lucky, I never got the chance. I love this slowed-down rendition of the Floyd song so much. His voice is so vibrant, he picks the phrases slowly and deliberately to emphasise the meaning of the lyrics, and the minimalist backing instrumentation is sublime. Put on some headphones, turn the volume up loud, close your eyes, and enjoy the genius of both the song and the performance. RIP Richie.
He was an a musical and poetic genius.I have always loved his work.I miss him and am glad that he left behind so many recordings of his unique recordings.
Just a few bits and pieces “..don’t accept what is happening.. it is the case of the suffering.. the turning away.. we may find that we’re all alone in the dreams of the proud.. on the wings of the night.. as the day time is slurring.. where the speechless unite.. in the silent accord.. no more turning away from the weak and weary.. from the coldness they feel.. in the world that we all share.. it’s not enough to stand and stare.. is it only a dream that they’ll beeee..... no more turning away.. “
Well there's no fancy video for one thing, I don't have the skillset for that or the time to learn it. Or maybe they are Floyd fans who prefer the original. If it's not either of those reasons then they are probably not people I could relate to or lose sleep over.
Sadly the (uh) Right have turned away from the less Fortunate and if you question that ideology you are subjugated and labelled unPatriotic or Worse...a Richie Havens Concert was a Happening and you felt Uplifted from his mere presence...the Man is sorely missed in this time of the body Politic telling individuals what to Think... sadly... " turning away ".
I hate what that toff Gilmour did with Floyd after Waters left, all sounded so bland and middle of the road,,, cringe worthy shite and it hasn't aged well either! But Richie Havens has taken a naff 80's Floyd song and turned it into something beautiful...who said you can't polish a turd? he should have re-made the 'Momentary Lapse' album in it's entirety.
Have either of you heard the version of Echoes on Gilmour's Live In Gdansk? For me it's the definitive version, better than the original. Dave Mason is also doing a decent rendition of it on his current Saucerful Of Secrets tour.
2024...the bird still sings.
Other singers wish they had this soul , they don’t , this man was a gift to us
All the way back to his Woodstock appearance while the sound guys wrestled with the pa system.
I wish I did.
I miss him

agree
@@nancymonaghan2251 just recently discovered him and amazed at the beauty of his voice -- both physically and from the heart.
Thank you. Richie is missed by many who were lucky enough to experience him.
Richie doing Pink Floyd. What a guy. His tastes were so broad and eclectic. I miss that gorgeous voice so much.
I saw him play this live at the Kent State folk fest in 98 - blew me away- kind and gentle soul who gave me a big hug
Today is four years exactly since his death. MISS YOU RICHIE HAVENS! The world is different without you here!
He is dearly missed.

Nothing That is certainly an image of Richie that is portrayed on the Wishing Well album imo.
me too
Saw him do this at Kent Stage about four years before he transitioned. We were spellbound and I never forgot that powerful moment.

The best kept secret was a live Richie Havens concert.
You are correct Allen...Fortunate are those who got to Experience a Richie Havens Concert.
Yes x

Once in a long time, a gem like this is unearthed, so happy to have found it
Agreed 👍
Only this man could sing this the way it’s supposed to be sung , now it’s as powerful as it should have been when it was released by the 3/4 Floyd

there is a list in my head of artists: Richie Havens; is right at the top,,,,,

Speechless......❤
Far out man!
On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?
thank You!
Muchas Gracias.
Beautiful version
Yes, I agree, it's an extremely beautiful rendition, and I actually prefer it to Floyd's version.
Does anyone else like his contribution to Steve Hackett's album "Please Don't Touch"? His singing is sublime on that album as always.
I'm a Hackett fan but don't know that album, thanks, I'll check it out.

We must have caught the same tour. He sang it cappella for an encore @ Waterbury, Vermont. Chillzzz down the spine wow!
+Rich Rayburg i did as well must have been same tour
Rich Rayburg That's about the time frame I saw him do it at NCC on Long Island.

Oh... ♥
listen to Floyd all my "long" life, but HOW this happened?????? i just loooooove it....,,,,,,,kreso,,,,,,
Yes, I too am a massive Floyd fan, but I think this interpretation surpasses the original.

One day, in another lifetime, this may come to pass.
Hopefully, mankind is on the cusp of that spiritual revolution, as per Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth.

The current upsurge of the right is imo a last desperate stand to hang on to the culture of Me, at which I suspect they are doomed to fail.

Is this one of Roger Waters' pseudonyms? ;-)
The division bell was pretty good though, still sounded like Floyd to me , Floyd were 4 men not just roger
Agreed, I really like The Division Bell, I play it often, some great tracks and possibly better than The Final Cut.
