I had my HD600s for 21 years now. I got them back in 1997 when they came out. Still good and sounding top notch. They done 1000s of hours of play time. Best headphones and lasted very well and still going strong.
Was it 1997 they came out Michael? Maybe I'm dreaming, but I remember first trying on some 600 in a shop over here in England in the days when, for £300, you could buy them, or a house.
With the harman target response, the 650's bass response is now considered closer to neutral, and the 600's bass is considered a tad light.... it might be time to revisit these two headphones in light of modern assumptions about neutrality
HD650's retain their tone better when plugging into different headphone amplifiers, whereas the HD600's are more sensitive to variances in amplifier topology. Hope this helps!
Rtings tests show the frequency range is more in line on the 650s. They got slightly more bass and LESS treble than HD 600. Very confusing when people say the 650s are brighter.
I bought both to do a shoot out and currently I'm leaning towards keeping the 650s. I feel like I have to really crank the volume up on the 600s to hear the bass, which creates listening fatigue pretty rapidly whereas the 650s sound full even at low volumes.
I love the HD650's. They make all my badly recorded albums sound good too. They have a slightly veiled sound, but this takes much of the harshness out of bad recordings. The HD650's never sound shrill, just superb!. For recording I use the HD600's as they probably are a bit more accurate.
Sorry to get back so late. They are open backed headphones which let quite a lot of sound out. If you have a mike close to your acoustic guitar and you have these headphones on the mike will probably pick up sound from the headphones. Shielding the headphones doesn't seem to stop the noise getting out. But I'm not sure if any headphones would, apart from some totally enclosed types. I had some in ear ones like that once which were noise cancelling but they did this not by electronics, but by completely sealing the ear from any outside noise. They were made by Sure. I keep a pair of Sennheiser HD600's because they may be more accurate when making recordings. But I'm not a professional so I haven't done any proper mix downs yet. But I don't like the sound of the HD600 all that much so I never use them (their tonal balance being closer to the HD800's). I just feel that the 650's might not give such an accurate account of my songs when I mix them for general use as they do smooth off the tops quite a bit. I had the HD800's for two years before I sold them. I swapped the stock cables for super quality ones that helped to tame the treble, and I did a mod that you can find online which tames the treble even more as well. But improvements were small. Our ears work in a strange way because they adjust to sound, but we don't notice it and so we think everything sounds the same all the time, i.e, how we think how we hear things does not alter. Listen to an owl squawk late at night in a quite forest and you might jump out of your skin with fright, but in Trafalgar Square during rush hour you wouldn't hear it at all. So, after listening to the HD800's the H650's sound muffed, closed in, even sort of wooden sounding, and hardly Hi-Fi, and you might wonder why you ever thought they were good headphones to start with? But stay with them for a while and then your ears adjust and after which they sound absolutely fabulous again. But if you go back to the HD800's straight after they will sound very sound thin and bright, and hardly great Hi Fi either. (You can carry on with this merry-go-round for eternity if you keep swapping back and forth). But after you adjust to the HD800's thinness, they do have something quite special about them, but harsh recordings always remain hard to listen to. In the end, for me at least, I found the 650's were better for their musicality, great fun, and a real pleasure to listen to, without any nasty surprises turning up. One day Sennhieser may come out with the HD900's, or even the HD1000's, and if these are said to sound like the 650's along with their gorgeous fullness, lushness, and superb smoothness, but are said to have the openness and clarity of the HD800's, then I might consider them. But I wonder to myself, why bother, because I'm totally happy with the 650's anyway? (By the way, paradoxically, despite the 800's thinness and brightness, they do have an incredible smoothness to them as well, which is a hallmark of Sennheiser headphones, and I did love them love them for that). And before people get mad at me because they might have spent a £1000 on their HD800's and I'm saying I really don't like them all that much: we all hear things differently, like how we taste things differently. I don't like raw tomatoes but all of my girlfriends have always loved them. Anyway, I'm not a treble freak, and so I will often turn treble down a bit if I can (like i do in my car as it has a graphic equaliser). And it took me a long time to find the right Hi Fi system for me (the AVI ADM9T's double red spot, and the AVI ADM40's - both are active speakers with pre-amps and DACs built in)) And in that way the 650's are perfect for me too. I run them through the Lehmann Black Cube which is also very smooth, or my Earmax Pro Silver Edition which is smooth as well.
I second hifiguy's opinion, also owning both of them. In addition I have Asus Xonar Essence One and ST, and the HD 650's pair really well with both. With HD 650 you get a dark, warm headphone with smooth highs and phenomenal vocals. The HD 600s are less exciting and a bit sharper around the edges. Also the mid range is colder. Some people prefer HiFiMAN HE-400 over HD 650 for more excitement. Not tried that yet myself, but should be on your list of options I think.
I have had the HD600s for about 15 years now and I still love them as much as when I bought them. 1 replacement cable so far, though the price of a new one is criminal. Soundwise ; huge soundstage, super-spatial and detailed and boy can they hit those lows - and NATURALLY, not boomy and indistinct like cheap ones.
Great review! I think I would like the 650s because I'm a warm kind of person. :P You should talk more about soundstage, though. They're open headphones so it's definitely worth talking about.
I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 650 and will make a review of them in one of the following days. They have a lot of emphasize on the mid bass and silky, smooth highs. I'd describe them as a warm pair of headphones. There are rumors that Sennheiser changed their drivers back in 2007/2008, and that the new drivers are white (you can see it through the grills) whereas the old drivers were black. The rumor has it that they are less dark sounding now than in the past, but I have no clue if it's true.
They don't.. the drivers are completely exposed.. the shell is basically just a grill.. so they basically leak everything like small, exposed speakers. It's done like this for for acoustics... And not only that.. these headphones require a dedicated amp... they are rated at 300 ohms... and actually require closer to 500 for proper bass response. They are really meant to be used in the privacy of your own home.
looking at the fq response charts for both over on headphone.. it looks like they both have a little bit of a bass emphasis.. though the hd 650 has slightly more... although it looks like the hd 600 has more of a treble spike than the 650, looking at it.
Good review. How would the 600 compare to the Blue Ella? Ella has a built in amp. Will primarily use for listening to backing tracks while playing guitar.
I just ordered a set of 600's, they were about $311 shipped, amazon prime 1 day shipping. I also ordered a Schiit audio Magni 3. Note: were I to put a number on it, 8/10 Senn users prefer the HD600 over the 650, and will say that they 650 are not worth $100 more. (They actually cost $163 more before tax and shipping). I respect either choice, but I to prefer a headset that is more neutral and does less colorizing (editing) of the sound. I prefer detail and neutrality, not some kind of foo-foo "voicing" to appeal to those that hate treble, accuracy and detail.
Hifiguy, I just reviewed the Sennheiser HD 650's and I have to say I really do enjoy them. You wouldn't happen to know about a pair of portable headphones which will deliver the same type of sound quality without amplification, do you? If this sound came in a portable format, I'd be the world's happiest man, haha.
I own both. With the stock cable i like the hd 600 more, however i connected the cardas after market cable to the 650 and that made it really shine. As an amp i use mainly the jan meier opera or the little dot ii++ Great video!
THanks for selling me your HD650! Lookin forward to hearing them. I know by far the hd650 are pretty clean on the waterfall plots and FR graphs which can save hearing. I had the LCD-2rev2 but it gave my ears a ringing. So I sold them.
I couldn't tell you much about the 250ohm version, unfortunately. However, even the 250 version needs an amp to drive it properly. So yeah, you haven't heard the full power of what the HD650 can do if you aren't driving it properly. The DT880s fit snugly, but form what I hear, the HD600/650 has a clamping grip, and if you don't find that very tight you will probably find the DT880s an even more loose fit.
Fantastic video again, keep them coming. To be honest, I based one of my decisions what to buy on one of your videos. I'd love to see you unboxing/reviewing a Corda headphone amp made by Mr. Jan Meier. I have the model Jazz, and for me it pairs perfectly with the HD650.
Ya I just learned that the HD650 was used to tune the Da11. I used to have the VioelectricV200 with LCD-2rev2 and Q-audio cable using neutrik balance cables. Sounded good but I needed money.
I've heard that the AMP has more to do than the cardas and I kinda agree. What's your opinion? Have you compared the HD650s with and without cardas, on a good AMP?
I'm sorry you feel that way, but it's understandable when most people have only ever heard the displays at B-Buy and compared them to the included earbuds. I'm sure when you are first blown away by the Beats that anything could sound better, as the Beats may be the best one has yet heard.
hey Hifiguy, i produce and listen electronic music like dustup and electro house... i've been wanting to buying new cans for a while now and i was looking at the sennheisers. do you have any recommendations?
That's true but for my ears it's was the right investment. It really makes a big difference. Also cardas gives lifelong guarantee, that means they really stand by there product.
Currently contemplating between Senn's IE60, IE80 and HD 600...I recently just broke my earbuds and looking for a replacement. I spend more time at school, in the gym and library rather than at home (most preferred for 600s+amp). So would you agree that i should purchase the IE 60 or 80s? much appreciated for a response :)
The glitch hop I listen to would not be possible without a computer. There are great things you can do with analog synthesis, it still sounds so amazing. Sounds you can't reproduce with a computer alone. But just because the modern day computer can produce a lot of crap, doesn't mean it's the computer's fault. The problem lies in the person operating it. Music is NOT determined by the means which are used to produce it, as long as you make it yourself and it sounds good, it's just as "real".
What's your take on things like heavy metal then? Do you consider that proper music? (and on a side note, you think the HD650 would be good for that. Answer at your leisure, I mostly like to hear your opinion on music, as I find it interesting)
I'm up to produce some Trance music - so what would rather prefer: 600's or 650's ? Soundstage and clarity is pretty important to me although... Hope u can help, mike :)
My hd650s i bought back in 2004 were just stolen out of my vehicle (took them to work with me and forgot in my truck at the end of the day). Trying to decide between hd600 and hd650. I loved the warm veil but I love the blue marble finish on the hd650 (unfortunately discontinued) Thought about the drop.com versions but the hd6xx is fugly imo
hey erm i was wondering about the amp thing also. in that case what high quality headphone would u recommend without the need for the amp to hear the quality u paid for.
HD600 and HD650 won't be properly powered with E17, and probably wont sound that good either, its not really a good enough dac/amp to make these headphones shine, its only an entry level portable device. You might wanna look at the HD598, it will most probably sound better out of the E17, and will be properly powered to get it near its full potential.
Thanks for the review...One tip, if you are running a Hi-Fi Channel. You MIGHT want to use a proper mic and not like... I dont know what you are using now but it sounds like its recorded with a 1eur mic. Love the video though, keep it up!
I always enjoy watching your vids man- do you think you could unbox and review some more desktop headphone Amplifier/ DAC's? It's not just about the headphones afterall ;)! Keep rocking hard hifiguy528!
brilliant review as always dude :) One question... Ive been considering getting the Beyerdynamic Tesla T70. Now I know the price tag is different. But how the HD600's fair against the T70? As I am really interested in the 600's too, However my budget will only allow one pair this side of christmas lol!
I listen to a lot of bass heavy music but I don't like overpowering bass, how do both of these headphones sound with music such as drum n bass & house?
By editing rock* i meant , you edit all tracks following specific rules of production ( i just made comparison , i did not say House and rock are same thing ) But as for me , and i have solid exp about music , if the music has quality in it , nice harmony , good stereo image also not too loud ( i hate this dumbass loudness war) it can be called good music.
There is some EDM which sounds really good (i am not speaking about dubstep or anyother high distroted noisy shit) like some House /Techno which use good old analogue synths to make perfect sound quality. It is moreless recording guitars on analogue SSL which runs by digital (todays SSL function lke this) , just instead of recording rock , you record House and than you edit it like you would edit rock.
Hi. I'm planning to buy the HD-650. I'm aware we need an external to drive this headphone. Can I use my Yamaha receiver to drive it for now? Will it sound good?
I have had the HD600 they do sound great but i was the at DT880 250ohm i have heard good things about will i be disappointed or are they not that different in sound i was thinking of the dt880 as a gaming headset with more bass.
Can u recommend a DAC Amp for my Senn HD600? I'm looking for something under 500. Would like to use with Apple Laptop, iPOD, and my PS3 for gaming. I have an Astro Mixamp Pro for my PS3 and does not have enough power therefore volume is low. Could I piggyback off the Mixamp with a DAC Amp or do I need just an Headphone Amp? If so do they make a DAC Amp with features for analog inputs? It would have to be a small headphone jack input though. BTW using MIxamp for the 7.1 virtual surround
If I can get a pair slightly used DT880 250ohm version for 160 is it worth. I don't currently have an amp just using my onkyo receiver just learning about these amps for headphones i am guessing i have never real even heard the HD600 but that will be next step i also find HD600 are not that tight could be me heard the DT880 fit well though any thoughts
The HD650 would, but really consider other headphones for bass heavy music. I was very disappointed with the HD650 with dubstep and electronica. I think the Denon D5000, Hifiman HE-400 and Ultrasones. The denons and ultrasones don't need a headphone amp either, but the Sennheisers need a good one if not they sound like schiit.
the 990's will have a much better sound stage and probably imaging than the senn's. So iono, I don't game but I'd think that would be the better choice. Extremely comfortable too, you could wear the beyer's for hours where as the senn's start to get a little uncomfortable. More clamp pressure, while beyer premiums are some of the most comfy phones on the planet.
Or the HD595. Both 60ohms. To give you the best comparison HD25-II or HD595 are like light speed cars that drive the best of the best on small and medium roads (small and medium AMP). Can't beat them for the price. The HD650 is a big heavy car with fat engine, you can't drive it on small city roads, you need long highways (big AMP) to push the power to high speeds. But once you're there, they blow away the other headphones. So...HD650 if u got a big AMP, if not HD25-II or HD595 are the best.
HD650 has more bass, but after owning mine for about 2 weeks I can tell you it DOES NOT have enough bass for dubstep. It is bass light, probably because its opened back. Instead of spending $400+ for the HD600/HD650 you could get Denon D5000 or Hifiman HE-400. The denons don't even need a amp. Oh don't forget the Sennheiser HD600/HD650 is 300ohm and requires a amp.
I have two questions for anyone willing to answer. #1 I own a pair of HD 598s and like their sound, which of these two am I likely to favor based on this? #2 The 598s I have are powered by a Denon avr 1713 through the headphone jack, will this be adequate enough to power these headphones?
***** yeah, I was expecting that. I live in a house with people and dont want to disturb people at night with my loud music. Any recommendations for a headphone that has sound quality of the same level with less sound leak?
***** I run music out of a galaxy s5 and would be willing to buy an amp if necessary. Price isnt really an issue, but I'm not really trying to spend $1000 or anything either. Around $500 would be good, cheaper would be better.
***** I listen to a lot of different music. I'd say mostly hip hop and rock. I was a cheap high school kid on a budget, so I have a pair of ath m50's. I would say I'm slightly sensitive to treble. I'm not sure what you mean by warm bass, but I don't want a ton of bass overpowering the music. A good punch for bass doesn't hurt though.

Thank you for this video! This made it very clear what the differences are, and I'm likely going for a 650.
As someone who works in a store that sells both: HD600 is studiophile (precise and neutral). HD650 is audiophile (fun and detailed sound).

I've heard that the AMP has more to do than the cardas and I kinda agree. What's your opinion? Have you compared the HD650s with and without cardas, on a good AMP?
Not sure about the 250ohm, but the DT880 itself is one of the most analytical and neutral sounding headphones you can get in that price range.
Also cardas gives lifelong guarantee, that means they really stand by there product.
thanks man gonna folow ur advice and get the 600
Currently contemplating between Senn's IE60, IE80 and HD 600...I recently just broke my earbuds and looking for a replacement. I spend more time at school, in the gym and library rather than at home (most preferred for 600s+amp). So would you agree that i should purchase the IE 60 or 80s? much appreciated for a response :)
Hi sir can you answer a quick question? Is the build quality identical aswell? For example the grills
Comfort wise, between the two headbands, which one is more comfy? Also, how difficult do you find driving them both?
What's your take on things like heavy metal then? Do you consider that proper music? (and on a side note, you think the HD650 would be good for that. Answer at your leisure, I mostly like to hear your opinion on music, as I find it interesting)
Would you recommend the 650's for watching movies? I do have a Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro but I'm planning to upgrade
Excellent review
In your opinion, would the Schiit Magni Uber 2/Modi Uber 2 would be a good fit for either?
I'm up to produce some Trance music - so what would rather prefer: 600's or 650's ? Soundstage and clarity is pretty important to me although... Hope u can help, mike :)
+Ümit Ay Both of them are made from roughly the same materials and have the same exact shape, accoustics and the soundstage should be quite similar.
+Ümit Ay IVE HEARD 600s have better clarity ive never listened to them but i have heard 600 are clearer
amazing review; this helped me a lot. I've decided on the 600
My hd650s i bought back in 2004 were just stolen out of my vehicle (took them to work with me and forgot in my truck at the end of the day). Trying to decide between hd600 and hd650. I loved the warm veil but I love the blue marble finish on the hd650 (unfortunately discontinued)
Thought about the drop.com versions but the hd6xx is fugly imo
Awesome video, thanks for the upload.
hey erm i was wondering about the amp thing also. in that case what high quality headphone would u recommend without the need for the amp to hear the quality u paid for.
forgive me for my discussion, these are headphones I'm definitely aiming to get in the near future, if my pocket allows it :p
It seems that everyone who bought the HD700's until now is very disappointed and says they don't sound as good as 650's.
SOUND!!! No one is hear for a comparison of boxes or paint jobs! HOW DO THEY SOUND?!!!
he talked about it ... ??
brilliant review as always dude :) One question...
Ive been considering getting the Beyerdynamic Tesla T70. Now I know the price tag is different. But how the HD600's fair against the T70?
As I am really interested in the 600's too, However my budget will only allow one pair this side of christmas lol!
Great review. Thx
Very nice review. Thanks
I listen to a lot of bass heavy music but I don't like overpowering bass, how do both of these headphones sound with music such as drum n bass & house?
when is there going to be a review on the hd 700 ?
this channel is amzing keep it up, i subbed :)
Do you require a seperate headphone amp if your plugging into a decent hi fi amp. Do you use one?
Best to use a dedicated headphones amp.
can you recommend one or should I wait till they arrive and see how they sound?
are they bulky, never heard of them before now...after i MADE THE PURCHASE OF THE PHONES :-(
thanks for the feedback
sbbinahee check out Beyerdynamic A200p or ADL X1
Seeing as I already have DT880s 600ohm, would I be better of getting the HD650, seeing as the DT800 is already an extremely neutral headphone?
Did you try them with a good amp before judging they were too colored or dark for you?
Which one have better crisp highs ? compare both here new versions with silver coils.
Hi. I'm planning to buy the HD-650. I'm aware we need an external to drive this headphone. Can I use my Yamaha receiver to drive it for now? Will it sound good?
It'll drive it OK. A dedicated amp would be best results.
I have had the HD600 they do sound great but i was the at DT880 250ohm i have heard good things about will i be disappointed or are they not that different in sound i was thinking of the dt880 as a gaming headset with more bass.
I've been wanting to get these for a while. Still don't know if they are worth it or not. I currently have the LCD-2 Revision 2 and HE-500.
still waiting for the hd700 review you talked about
Can u recommend a DAC Amp for my Senn HD600?
I listen to a lot of metal so my music sounds best with high bass and treble and low mids. Would the 600 or 650 be better?
Which would be best for music production, the 600, 650, or the 700?
600
Hi-Fi Insider thanks
Do they get really loud like if u r in a room listening your music loud other people listen because of the open back ?
the 990's will have a much better sound stage and probably imaging than the senn's. So iono, I don't game but I'd think that would be the better choice. Extremely comfortable too, you could wear the beyer's for hours where as the senn's start to get a little uncomfortable. More clamp pressure, while beyer premiums are some of the most comfy phones on the planet.
thanks which amp and dac i should use with them?thanks again
i can't figure out what you're saying. you don't make it clear which headphone you're referring to most of the time.
high impedance means like how much power its gonna take to power it properly
Will Denon DA-300USB be a very good choice for HD 650?
with an amplifier yes
What do you think about using a fiio e18 to power the 600's
Or the HD595. Both 60ohms.
To give you the best comparison HD25-II or HD595 are like light speed cars that drive the best of the best on small and medium roads (small and medium AMP). Can't beat them for the price. The HD650 is a big heavy car with fat engine, you can't drive it on small city roads, you need long highways (big AMP) to push the power to high speeds. But once you're there, they blow away the other headphones. So...HD650 if u got a big AMP, if not HD25-II or HD595 are the best.
If I use lossless music source from computer
which head amp is the best I can choose for HD600?
HD650 has more bass, but after owning mine for about 2 weeks I can tell you it DOES NOT have enough bass for dubstep. It is bass light, probably because its opened back. Instead of spending $400+ for the HD600/HD650 you could get Denon D5000 or Hifiman HE-400. The denons don't even need a amp. Oh don't forget the Sennheiser HD600/HD650 is 300ohm and requires a amp.
The Hifiman takes more power than the 600/650 though.
which 2 of these would be better with rock and electronica
hey hifi gui which is better for rock and eletronic the senn hd 650 or the beyer dt 990?
If I listens jazz trio and classical music, which should I choose?
I love my HD600. the best
I have two questions for anyone willing to answer.
#1 I own a pair of HD 598s and like their sound, which of these two am I likely to favor based on this?
#2 The 598s I have are powered by a Denon avr 1713 through the headphone jack, will this be adequate enough to power these headphones?
***** how bad does the sound leak?
***** thank you for your help, I appreciate it
You like a more neutral sound? Who are you kiddin' withe all that Beats gear you use?
Can the pc 360's even be compared to these? Looking to upgrade..
open and closed design, what are the pros and cons?
Both are much cheaper now, just look around at your favourite online retailers ;)
i listen to mainly hip hop. how are the 600s for that?
