While the bleach reference/relation is accurate it is cringe/gay. Sadly this trope is seen in a lot of modern media. That being said it is a spot on analysis but still cringe and gay.
Younger me always wondered “wait why is Alex keeping this guy alive if he knows he’s a problem why won’t he just kill me instantly?” Now this theory does make a lot of sense to that thought
@assembled1855 to me thats your theory Im aware that he died but I think the virus just genetically mutated him bringing him back but erasing his memories in the process.
@I am tired of humanity well you're just seeing a virus Mercer as an actual Mercer. Mercer as a villain is perfectly fit cause he's the virus that took the form of him. Virus Mercer was never ever been a real hero, he was more of vigilante.
From my perspective since he is just the virus itself carrying a conscious he doesn't really have to be afraid of anything. He's not dead nor alive. Which just makes him so badass. But I do know Mercer wouldn't of been this easy to be defeated by Heller. It sucks the devs chose to go this route.
@lelouchvibritannia1662 Alex was looking for his successor, and despite what Heller wanted to believe, Alex succeeded in creating the ultimate life form. This whole battle was nothing but a formality. Not to mention that whole thing about Amaya becoming "the mother of the Evolved" was only meant to piss Heller off enough to get him to kill him (also considering how long Mercer had Amaya prisoner, why didn't he infect her with the Mercer Virus and why didn't he kill the real Alex's sister Dana. Even the virus doppelganger retained the real Alex Mercer's scientific mind: he does nothing without a reason). This whole scenario was just one big lab trial, he took Heller and infected him with the Mercer Virus, then set him loose on the NYZ like a rat into a maze, then he introduced the Evolved and placed them in various points in Heller's path leading all the way to the center where Mercer is. Mercer's motive: to create an evolved that can surpass even him. In the end, James Heller became the new Alex Mercer.
Even if prototype 3 came out it would be the same story helller would become the villain because James Heller has done the same thing like Alex Mercer did.
@cosneanumatei5117 and there is also a theory that there are different Alex mercers cuz his guts got scattered and the one that died in Prototype 2 is the evil one
@christhefiend Alex didn't fight Elizabeth Greene alone. Black watch unloaded half their arsenal into her alongside Alex. Alex didn't fight the supreme hunter alone either and tbh he wasn't more evolved than Alex either. I'm not a fanboy. I just do my research. Give it a try sometime. It'll stop you from looking like a dumbass.
The man will actually help you out in the boss fight by telling you from switching form and not use the same one that he was using. Which I find it kind of odd that it came from him, instead of Heller realizing it himself
@lonewanderer1328 if you still have the game try to hit him multiple times with same weapon he will go mad and say some funny shit. Like if you hut him multiple times with whipfist he goes ((Im using the damn whip be more......creative))
@yourhighness6239 I think the implication is that “Alex” is literally the virus itself at this point so he might be able to just pop out when he wants to.
@Alvano Funes Essentially. Granted that's not to say that they couldn't "change" their "clothes". They are outright shape-changers, what they look like has more to do with memory and intention than physical fact
this is actually what i always keep thinking about the ending of prototype 2. there just NO WAY in hell that heller can defeat mercer. mercer is on another level. and besides, mercer IS the virus itself. he might as well regenerate back INSIDE heller.
@xaura-c9fimagine new protag is about to absorb James, who now has the same motivations as Alex, but new protag realises that James is going easy on them and says "Something's not right" and doesn't absorb James
@nathansidhu6723 my god it’s a 7 month old comment on a game where people swear every sentence. I don’t know how in gods name you got through any of the god forsaken un godly cutscenes if saying gods name in vain is god damn offensive to you.
Mercer was a good man that got tired of fighting for a lost cause,he saw that Heller is a good man that will not stop in his quest to make things better and decided to pass on the bar to him
As someone who just played the games, I always found Mercer's change from somewhat decent guy to genocidal monster to be pretty jarring. But now that I understand what he went through in between games, I feel kinda bad for the guy
The exact quote I remember from memory: "I am no longer bound by life or death, Dana. I've moved beyond that... Heller has as well... he just hasn't realized it yet."
@Aurthurmorgan-c8i6p they got bankrupt guys they didnt really have a choice so they ended mercer here but the story is not really finished yet you guys forgot that mercer gave hellers powers. Its kinda like he gave his 1%/0.0000001 of his dna to heller so he can just come out in hellers body if he wanted to mercer is immortal the only way to kill him is burn him into a pool of lava so he cant regenerate anymore
I believe Mercer was intending to follow his "New World" plan based on his emergent extreme misanthropy based on his personal experiences in the prior years. He created all his evolved as tools to aid him in erecting that vision, and no matter who they were before their turn, each of them came to embody the vices he so dearly despised in humans -- namely selfishness, sadism, nihilism, perpetual deceit, and dispassion toward anything they felt or saw as inherently less than themselves. But then one James Heller came along. Mercer infected him like all his other Evolved, but he did not fall in line with his other minions, be it in actions or ideals. Heller was rough and coarse in personality, but honest and true to himself and others. He knew how to rip shit up like a motherfucker, but lacked anything resembling an insatiable bloodlust. He could become the epitome of ruthless to his enemies, but never forsook his compassion toward those in a much lesser position than his own, even those who were by their very existence his foes (Rooks being one such example). He was quite emotional as far as men go, as shown by his numerous explosions of anger, yet showed enough sense of wit and pragmatism enough to not be blinded by it when the needs arose. And much like Mercer's relationship with Dana, James cared about one person in his life above all others, his daughter, and was more than willing to lay down his life for her sake on numerous occasions, each obstacle of even the most intimidating of sizes in his path only serving to strengthen his determination and will instead of blunt it or break it. Seeing this man become or remain as everything Mercer believed to be beyond the grip of creatures he viewed as innately worthless, self-centered and abjectly stupid to be trusted with the ultimate power over life and death he himself possessed might have lit a spark in his mind. At the exact point of initiating his final and fatal confrontation with Heller, I believe Alex was a jaded and world-weary man who only wanted to rest, and had made up his mind to 'pass on' his mantle to a more -- at least in his eyes -- worthy successor.
but there's a problem with that sure, he passed on his power onto someone who's worthy of them but that doesn't change the world Mercer knew he can't change the world or humanity, which is why he wanted to destroy it Why then, would he let James win, and abandon his plan? edit: well as i finished typing this i realised that James may have brought back his faith in humanity
@AngrySpaceDwarf, tell me you don't understand 'Nihilism' - without telling me you don't understand 'Nihilism'. you're just outing yourself as projecting your own (lack of understanding) Nihilism onto EVERYONE that Alex encountered in P2's comic. you do realize that 'Nihilism' - is a philosophical state of mind, & not whatever you spewed out.
@godzillazfriction It's true, that nothing in life matters. But the fact that nothing in life matters is, in and of itself, just as inherently meaningless a concept. There's nothing stopping you from putting your own meaning into things. And there's nothing stopping you from making your life, and the lives of those you care for, worth living.
This is personally what I always believed. Alex set you up for this after the ending of the first game where he admits to know what he has become and what he will be. And ended up being. Alex mercer was freaking epic I hope they bring him back
It wouldve been Nice that Mercer let himself be absorbed by Heller but never dissappeared instead laying dormant inside Heller. so heller finds pariah And gets into a fight with pariah and weakens her but Mercer decides to separate himself from Heller and absorb pariah
@ZephyrSusano-o Pariah is not cross. You can even look it up on the wiki too. If I remember correctly he was currently being held in a different state during New York outbreak.
I feel as though he was slowly consuming Heller from the inside out until eventually leaving Heller's body similar to how Greene gave birth to the Supreme Hunter (Vomiting). My theory was he maybe wanted Heller's unique resilient DNA to possibly aid him in combatting Pariah in Proto 3 should it have happened since they were hyping it up in the first game.
There's also foreshadowing in the first game of Alex becoming evil. In one of the cut scenes cpt. Cross asks Alex if there were any other infected leaders out there to which Alex responds with "no there aren't, at least not yet anyway."
What annoys me is people dont realized this and just writes off Mercer as a generic bad guy to be beaten by the protagonist despite being obviously stronger.
He was a generic bad guy to be beaten by the protagonist. None of this theory bullshit was actually alluded to in the second game. Mercer was written like a 1 dimensional character from start to finish and there was nothing shown in game that there was any more nuance to him then that. He was a completely different character from the first game, even down to his voice.
@cosneanumatei5117 why? Mercer literally gave Heller HIS powers. During the course of the game Hellers power grows pretty much to the same absurd level as Mercer, also with LESS weapons than Alex he easily kills off and consumes most of Mercers other shapeshifting followers.. and he at his core is a SOLDIER where Mercer started out as "some guy". Mercer tries to absorb Heller IN the game and Heller tears off his arm and absorbs it. That's why he says "you cant kill me." He realized in that moment that he actually has the power to kill Mercer. If he stood NO chance, then Alex Mercer would not have run away in that moment.
I think they made Alex a villain as an excuse to have a second game more than it being any form of complex storytelling. They already did the, "Military bad, they made zombies," line so the only step forward was to get a new antagonist.
While Mercer might have let Heller win, he was still rather surprised when Heller absorbed his hand. At the very least, Heller might have become a unique strain of the virus, and may actually be capable of countering Mercer in a proper fight.
Yeah, that's the only logical conclusion in this mess of a story. I still think that's a bit digging into the story, finding sense where writers didn't intend on it to come through like this, and that Heller just has plot armor, but I'd like to think Mercer had a plan like this. And also he's not dead since he's the virus, and if anything, he'd just be in Heller, waiting or hibernating in unconsciousness.
I agree totally but he did a damn good job finding explanations where they’re weren’t any, I really hope we get a P3 & get to play Mercer again, some way.. somehow..
Lots... Lots of lots of plot armor. The resilient DNA is like... just there. P2 was just made to snatch money out of people's pockets. It had some good things, but it had more worse things.
@EchoXero-rp8yr there is a tiny chance. Heller had cut alexs arms of. So maybe he will "reconstruct" himself. This way in the 3rd games we would play a gutted down mercer returning all his powers and new ones. Kinda like in god of war 2 and 3... man just thinking about that gets me fired up xd
I always wondered why the Mercer boss battle was so weak, when I finished the boss fight I was like "is.. that it?... no way could that be it there's have to be more to this because the fight was too easy"
Imagine a prototype 3 with mercer's consciousness lives on inside heller's body like a parasite except heller slowly gets consumed by mercer and and heller becomes the parasite.
Or how about this mercer is in the hellers mind but instead of trying to take him over is guiding him and giving him advice and helping him out when he needs it
Also Alex did not use all of his ability during their fight, giving the idea that Alex actually wants Heller to consume him. Also Its quite odd that Alex did not even try to resist and escape Heller giving the idea that all of it was Alex plan.
I don’t remember all the details, but my understanding of the situation is that Heller’s “annoyingly resilient DNA” made him a more suitable host for Blacklight than Alex, which would explain him becoming more powerful as well as Alex being unable to consume him.
Lets not forget than heller consumed alot super soldiers, evolved and blacklight creatures(like for real he consumes 4 goliaths in the game and those things are big, really big)
As someone who's played both prototype 1 and prototype two, Heller did seem a lot weaker than Mercer was in prototype 1. And it did seem like Alex Mercer was letting James Heller kill him.
He's Alive because if you look at the ending of Prototype 1 you can see he regenerates from a nuke, Alex arms were ripped off at the end of prototype 2 so he can regenerate with his arms.
Ive always been a fan of the theory that Alex saw how James cant be consumed and was like, "yo if I get consumed by him and take over his body then I wont be able to be consumed and will evolve to an even higher form". I mean he made James go out and evolve so much, its like Alex is going twice as fast at evolving. So basically Alex had James grow and evolve quickly and then had allowed himself to be consumed so he can take over Jame's body and gain the ability to no longer be consumed by anyone. Imagine if there was a prototype 3 and Alex cant be consumed and is even more unkillable. Hed be unstoppable
Yea. It’s kinda obvious he doesn’t panic even after he’s being killed, he wanted to die. He knew what he was and wanted to end it before he lost himself. You kinda figure that out if you pay attention to the lore of the first game and second he makes it clear he’s losing himself. Sad fate tho
I keep saying Alex was going to hide in James til he got comfortable and consume his psyche from the inside so he could spread world wide. Seriously I want a 3rd game where that's what happens and mercer wins, killing James and his daughter then starting the new plague from the Whitehouse. The game ending with mercer winning and the entire world gets consumed with the exception of a few of the world's largest cities. Seriously mercer survived the first game after being nuked and came back by absorbing something as small as a crow, he shouldn't have lost in 2
I knew something was wrong when I fought Alex. Even after consuming his followers, he didn’t even use any of his devastator attacks like how the Supreme Hunter used his against Alex.
This always been the best theory really. The line "Welcome to the top of the food chain" has a huge message and it aint no punch line nor just a typical compliment. Remember Alex already died and its quite easy to slept on and the one came and surviced after is the virus with Mercer's consious and memories and has a newly and slowly devolping personality. after the final explotion and resurusted again,It actually tried to be nice with the humanity but sadly all fails because humanity treated it like shit and taken it for granted and it started to despise the entire humanity as of whole thus causing the events of the second game. After it found James..it realise that he'd be the perfect host to control its regiem believing maybe he could "cure" mankind so it gave him all kinds of chores so that he could be better. and then the final showdown,Alex was disappointed by James disapproval so it simply tested him..wheather humanity is worth saving or not and it figured out that it does after feeling the strong bond between a father and his daughter. So he gave James a chance to live on by letting itself die and since it's a virus..it feels no pain hence why there is no screem during the last part. Remember James didn't die unlike Mercer did in the first game thus still reteating his humanity...so in theory,James IS the Apex right now. The Irony from this story is that....A Simple Virus tried to be more humane and kind comparing to majority of humanity itself.
I like this theory somewhat, however, considering that Mercer had been actively pursuing his own plans before he ever encountered Heller I don’t think that this is too accurate. It’s implied that the other evolved were around for far longer than Heller was which begs the question of why would Mercer dismantle weeks, months possibly, of his own work just for Heller? A man who will ruthlessly kill other people to get what he wants. True he was doing it all in the name of rescuing his daughter but that was only after he discovered the truth about her. What excuse did he have on the dozens or hundreds of men and women he killed before then? Revenge? If so he too falls for the failings of mankind. As one evolved, Commander Gallagher, once said during their battle, “You’re no better than these humans”. It’s possible that Mercer was holding back but I think you’re giving Heller too little credit. The main contributor to Heller’s incredible strength was the constant stimuli of combat which prompted him to constantly evolve much like how Mercer did in the first game. Throughout the game Heller consumed multiple Evolved, Juggernauts, Brawlers, Orion soldiers, and even a Hydra. Assuming these Evolved are comparable to a Mid-Game Mercer in the first game it’s not too surprising why he’s managed to close the gap so quickly. Two years may be plenty of time to grow but if not constantly pressured by extreme conditions Mercer would’ve had little opportunity to get much stronger. Granted I never read the comics but I think it’s fair to assume the world in general is nowhere near as chaotic as New York was during the first outbreak. Two weeks may not seem like a lot of time but the first Prototype took place in a little over two weeks as well and we all know have powerful Mercer had become in that time period.
Even with Heller going through all that come on. You gotta admit that Mercer has consumed a lot of stuff with those 2 years. And Mercer definetly knew where Heller was at all times (the infected vision)and couldve killed him at the end. Heller had a lot of experience, but Alex Mercer has had wayyyy more and the fact he consumed 3 to 5 times as many hunters and goliaths with his 'mother' while in this game he absorbed 8 versions of himself in the first game. I am sorry, but Mercer was stacked on power and when Heller used the same weapon against Mercer, Mercer easily countered and jokingly said " Hey I'm using this". I am not saying Heller is weak at all he probably couldve beaten Mercer without Mercer consuming those 8, but nahhh even i was iffy on why Mercer didnt really try to get a killing blow on you when he easily countered.
No Mercer was stronger but his heart wasn't in it. Mercer was looking for someone to take over, he realized he didn't have the heart to be a hero so he created a scenario in which the hero he wanted was born. Mercer was looking to the future and if no hero was born then he was right and his plan would win.
i always thought it like after being consumed mercer just entered a dormant state in james mind, waiting for the right momment to asume control, after all wasnt mercer like the "Father" of the whole second virus.
Best theory ive seen for this game is that Alex is somehow using James as a vessel as a way to find pariah and kill him. Shame we’ll probably never get prototype 3
I played and beat Part 1 for the first time. I enjoyed part 1 so much more tbh. The animations were better, the vehicles, and you had more combat/power options. The city was more vast as well. After seeing the end of Part 1 it seems like Alex was more anti hero even tho he saved the city from the bomb. He saved NY, but that allowed the virus to thrive still which is pretty horrible plus he unleashed Elizabeth green. Along with consuming so many people. He just gives off that anti hero vibe. I feel at the end of Part 1 it was up to this Alex Mercer what he wanted to be after learning who he was. So the devs made him a bad guy which I think was less creative and just too easy. They should've just extended his character and give the players a choice to make him a bad guy or good by choices in the game. Or if they really have him a good guy why not come up with an antagonist maybe come up with one or more Evolved and have blackwatch be the original creators instead of Mercer. Basically a team of evolved blackwatch scientists created using the blacklight virus attempting to make others like Mercer. A team to counter Alex Mercer. But instead of the evolve having one mission to destroy Alex Mercer they choose to further destroy humanity after learning they're god like. So now Mercer has to help blackwatch destroy their mess they created.
I knew something was off with that final battle between Alex and Heller.. Alex may have been the bad guy, but he recognized destroying humanity meant killing his sister as well, someone he always protected, the only person he ever trusted. this makes sense as to what really happened in prototype 2. Good work man..
Mercer didn't actually die in the fight Heller cut Mercer arm off and not consuming it remember on Prototype 1 when Mercer comeback just from a bit of himself getting eaten by a crow I think Mercer have ulterior motive for that but we will not know because the game will not be continued sadly :(
"..there's no way James could rise that level of power..." That's what every anime villain say all the time. I read Dragon Quest Dai again and realized it is about how a bunch of kids adventuring for several weeks were able to foil a villain's decades of world domination plan.
Mercer knew heller was a problem after the white light incident, he had ample opportunities and time to kill him before the final fight. Alex is intelligent, if he had thought of him as a threat he wouldn't have allowed heller to gain exp. And become stronger by the minute, mercer wanted to die all along!
I really really hope some studio picks up this franchise, I’ve been obsessed with this series since the first game. Just imagine what a game they could make with hardware like the PS5!
I definitely always felt that Alex had something else going on, especially *because* he was able to consume a crow to regenerate his form, it seemed unusual that he'd be unable to do the same with James, especially as Alex *is* the Blacklight virus given form; as such, the creature calling itself Alex would most likely not be dead, but simply dormant within James. What limits are on him at that point are hard to say - that would, perhaps, depend on just how much control James has of his viral body or, more importantly, if James is even who he thinks he is -- after all, it's possible the real James died when he was infected and what thinks itself to be James now is actually, much like Alex, just a Blacklight entity that inherited his memories from absorbing him and, having no memories of its own, defaulted to that identity.
I think there's something else add on to this and exactly how Alex fought James. If you played prototype one you fight 2 people who have the exact same powers as Alex and one of them has the exact same (if not more) time and mastery of prototype 2 Alex with Elizabeth Green. Elizabeth does some crazy shit in that boss to point where Alex has help from the military to beat her. Not only did Alex absorb her and take her power but he got even stronger. Not once in his boss did he use her abilities or anything new he could had picked up. Hell he didn't even use a lot of his old abilities like his armor. So yeah I feel like he held back a great ton
Six or seven years of remembering prototype and seeing this as my recommended. This makes me happy knowing that these theories could be really true. Making me wonder if we the fans could make a prototype three. Theories and speculations as well as abilities and powers. Makes me wonder if there was a character that the player can be a part of that story to either join heller or Diana and hellers daughter. But hey a fan can dream
My personal theory is that Alex was trying to make the virus safer. Since it turns most people into zombies and kills others, only 1% evolve into what he is and only 20% become his lesser but still powerful servants called the Evolved, Alex talked about how annoying Heller’s resistance to the virus is both Heller and his daughter have it too, Alex also said something like "I can't die Heller and I are beyond that but Heller doesn't realize it yet" I believe Alex wanted Heller’s DNA to mix with the virus as much as possible, creating a version of the virus that would make anyone injected with it just as resistant as Heller, The virus is known to mutate, and I think Alex intentionally mutated it into something that could evolve everyone not just a select few into higher beings, Alex openly tells people about his transhumanist values, He doesn’t just want to survive he wants everyone to be like him. Also Alex made it safer before, The first game everyone are pretty much just zombies but, Alex is the only guy who seems to be stronger from the virus, the second game still lots of zombies but, now Alex has his servants with him stronger than humans but, weaker than him, what if he had to go out of his way to mutate the virus just to get those servant evolved people, so Alex trying to make the virus safer would not be the first time he tried probably, Heller even looks like the first time he manage to create some one who is the same species has him not zombies not the evolved servants but, another Alex. Alex did not lose he won.
I’m really late but I’ve also been waiting on more videos for this theory bc I 100% believe this. I thought of it myself knowing the full story and playing the games. It just makes sense. He was going to destroy humanity but Heller being the man he is made Alex think that JUST MAYBE there’s a chance. And even if Humanity turns out to be shit regardless.... Heller is now DOUBLE if not 4x more stronger than Alex bc of the fact he consumed him and of his consumed as well. So regardless it goes his way. Also I’m severely disappointed they didn’t continue the series.
I always had a theory that after mercer seen the fact that heller couldn't be absorbed he saw the potential of taking Heller's body over think about it. Mercer has come close to the cusp of perfection in terms of evolution and here comes a random mutation immune to the one way the other evolved such as the runners and pariah have of killing him consumption. So he pushed heller forward in his evolution giving him further reason to come after mercer by killing father Guerra and sending powerful infected and evolved after him for him to consume them and evolve even further to the point where he was about the closest being to mercer In terms of power(with pariah being a likely exception). Which means being consumed by heller would not only mean that now he can take over a body that is stronger then his original(as it's now his power+Heller's) but also taking over a body with an immunity to the one thing that could put him down reliably making him borderline immortal(unless black watch choses to carpet bomb him with tzar bombas)
The only thing I really disagree with is how Mercer *could* take over heller, since the consumption process always ends in the consumed being completely erased leaving only the biological mass and memories but somehow never causing the consumer to suffer in any way from said memories. I think Mercer just wanted a host for the black light itself with more potential.
@keithkania3810 well mercer is the virus can be argued that he the most powerful and knowledgable evolved could pull some weird fuckery and take over a consumer
@sirsunman7826 and let’s not forget about how mercer absorbed Elizabeth greene, who was the cause for the original virus and alot of her power, would’ve added to Mercer’s
@keithkania3810 True, he should be erased, but ... True, he should be erased, but ... Alex is The virus. Viruses evolve and change. It´is impossible to know or predict what happen. So, maybe Alex changed his body, to be able to consume somebody by being consumed.
You know, in the fight Alex barely used most of his abilities, even the Devastators, if anything I feel he was simply testing Heller and see if he eventually becomes the top of the food chain And considering the comics basically given Alex a hatred for Humanity on top of him being a diagnosed Sociopath, and his overall attitude and impact in his life before he got his powers - I feel he simply got tired of the world being what it is and despite his efforts trying to forcfully infect the world as a way of being "The next step in the evolution", it seemed deep down, he wanted to die, because being the Virus, he has a major healing factor so he cant die from a gunshot to the head or something, someone at his level has to beat him down And maybe during the fight, he saw potential in Heller's powers and him feeling acceptance that someone rivaled him and then finally put him down, that makes sense as to why his fight felt underwhelming in comparison to us playing him the first time But then there's another theory mostly talked of by fans - what if him being Consumed was the plan all along? With everything he's capable of, it would be possible if he can consume and absorb Heller from the inside out. Hell for all we know he didnt think Heller would get that far, so he thought it'd be wise to allow himself to be absorbed so he can then later on, eventually find a way to kill and consume Heller from within If anything, with all this talk of PARIAH in the first game and how "it" is hyped up, if we EVER get a 3rd game, it is insane to think on what it can do in game, if its ever shown
When I first heard Mercer saying "Welcome to the top of the food chain", as a kid it gave me chills, and I had almost forgotten about this. I just finished replaying this game yesterday, and it really brought back that core memory
The moment in the boss battle Mercer did not even go super armor mode despite 3 stages speaks a lot. Alex most likely gave in to die because he is tired with everything. Like the video said it's lonely being at the top. Or the budget wasn't enough to cover the boss stages during production.
I hope they make a prototype 3 and I do hope they bring back Alex since all he needs is a little of his blood to consume something as shown in the prototype 1 ending
I hope one day they create a prototype 3 in where you get to play as Heller, Mercer and 2 other new characters. The idea being they all share the same body and can split up. That way you create single/multiplayer. But they won't do that
Thank you so much for this even if its not really what the writers themselves had intended. Anyone that played P1 knows that, just from in-game accomplishments along, that there was no way in hell he could beat alex. U have now given sense to otherwise absolute nonsense.
Haven’t watched the video yet, it just popped into my recommended but a Prototype video is always worth watching, but I thought I’d mention that I always got the impression Alex was encouraging Heller to be the best biological weapon of mass destruction he could be, he even sounded like a somewhat dickish coach during the boss battle. Edit: The video basically confirms what I already thought, just adds a bit of extra reasoning for why, which is nice. Good video, have a like.
hmm hmm the truth is that I was disappointed when I learned that the former protagonist had to be dealt with and then defeated in p2. That's why I didn't even play the game. Yes, I still don't, and I won't. However, this little video clarified why it was necessary. I found it interesting, thanks for the video
Prototype 1 and 2 were my favorite games in high school especially with Mercer's story and it made the whole Heller killing Mercer ending never make a whole lot of sense to me. I mean its obvious Mercer is superior to Heller just by the cut scene before the fight with Mercer instantly absorbing all the other evolved with little effort whereas Heller needed to beat the hell out of them before he would be able to absorb one of them.
Thing about the virus, iirc, is that when it consumes individuals, it gains their memories, skills and, most probably, consciousness. So it's not really the matter of how many it consumes, but rather about if the dominant personality(i.e. Mercer or Heller) can exercise enough control over the host body. Basically, consuming someone is a double-edged sword: you gain all the neat stuff, but you also need to fight back against the multitudes of personalities constantly trying to gain control. I don't remember if it was ever explored in the games, but if Prototype 3 ever comes out with Heller still being the main character(or even a new villain, like it was with Mercer, where Heller failed to mentally resist him), it's gonna be about internal struggle between him and Mercer, that is constantly trying to emerge in his attempts to test and temper Heller further. If Heller wins - he wins and everyone lives happily ever after, and if Mercer wins - he simply will execute the plans that were already put in motion. I mean, just think about it: there's simply no way that consuming such a powerful and intelligent host like Mercer would be a simple power-up and have no underlying consequences whatsoever.
the story was bad written. if mercer really wants amaya to be the mother of new world, then why he didn't infect her in the first place? why mercer didn't kill his sister? and then why mercer keep them in the vault?
Heller didn't know how to use a black watch computer even after consuming an untold number of there scientist. I dont think the writers for p2, honest cared for the story.
@venom0825 now that you mention it, he still has no idea how to use the computer, it is possible that he didnt fully consume all the memories Mercer have, but yeah I agree with yoel silitonga, it is bad written
I've been waiting for this soooo loong 😂 love mercer's mostly unknown (at least i think not many know about. i definelity didn't) and how badass he is. Amazing video great work keep it up😄
While the bleach reference/relation is accurate it is cringe/gay. Sadly this trope is seen in a lot of modern media. That being said it is a spot on analysis but still cringe and gay.
Y’all heard it here first
??????
I'm gonna get wooshed aren't I?
Ok and
Umm 🙄 why are you comparing it to being gay like WHAT THE FUCK?
"He ate like 4 copies of himself and has had 2 years to practice and evolve his power."
YES. THANK YOU
Younger me always wondered “wait why is Alex keeping this guy alive if he knows he’s a problem why won’t he just kill me instantly?” Now this theory does make a lot of sense to that thought
Why doesn't he just kill Heller? It's a video game. If you just get killed 2 hours in, wheres the fun and gameplay if you just die in the first act?
@TheStormbringer8751 that was younger me read it again
@sentinelslayer8328 2 months fro then what are 3 to 4 now
Sheesh someone has plot issue. Not talking to op of course, but one of his responders.
Mercer is the very definition of : Die the hero, or live long enough to see your self become the villain.
Mercer is not actually the real Alex Mercer who died at the Penn Station before the virus took over him.
@assembled1855 to me thats your theory Im aware that he died but I think the virus just genetically mutated him bringing him back but erasing his memories in the process.
@ez5324 it’s not a theory, he literally says it the first game.
@ez5324 Yeah no. That Mercer you see is just the virus itself.
@I am tired of humanity well you're just seeing a virus Mercer as an actual Mercer. Mercer as a villain is perfectly fit cause he's the virus that took the form of him. Virus Mercer was never ever been a real hero, he was more of vigilante.
This makes sense. I always wondered why Alex seemed so calm and controlled in that fight. Even when he's about to die he congratulates James.
From my perspective since he is just the virus itself carrying a conscious he doesn't really have to be afraid of anything. He's not dead nor alive. Which just makes him so badass. But I do know Mercer wouldn't of been this easy to be defeated by Heller. It sucks the devs chose to go this route.
"Welcome to the top of the food chain" says it all
@deathbykonami5487 what if
Alex didn't even use all of his powers like his devastators, muscle mass, and his armor or shield
Why did I suddenly start to return to the prototype fandom?
Ikr . It's unfortunate that [prototype3] will not see the daylight :(
@drifterz2578 theories that Alex mercer will rise from hellers body were amazing but it's sad that prototype 3 will never come out.
I've been getting back into the fandom too. Such a fun game
James had the blacklight virus for weeks, meanwhile Mercer had it for years. Of course he let James win.
Had it? Mercer literally became the blacklight virus. James should've never even stood a chance.
Both green and cross also had the virus for years and Alex was able to beat them after only having it for a few days.
Excellent writing if it was intentional for it to be taken this way or really bad if not
@AppalachianPirate Yoi don’t say that for all the other Evolved Mercer beat off the right bat fanboy. 🤡
I always thought he did that to force him to fight differently
@quintinwright8487 Like he wants James to win. Why else spell out how to get yourself “beaten”???
@lonewanderer1328 if you still have the game try to hit him multiple times with same weapon he will go mad and say some funny shit. Like if you hut him multiple times with whipfist he goes ((Im using the damn whip be more......creative))
@alikasrai271 I need a clip of that
Also, there's a few clips of Alex getting very disappointed when he kills Heller. One of them being "No. No. NO. GET UP!"
He will emerge from Heller in their future fight against Pariah, like Orochimaru from Sasuke
That’d be some shit lol
i can see that
That would be interesting.
That was the original plot for the 3rd game and the new character was suppose to be one of the soilders that work for gentek
@yourhighness6239 I think the implication is that “Alex” is literally the virus itself at this point so he might be able to just pop out when he wants to.
What’s impressive is how he keeps his hoodie even while getting blown back away xd
It helps that it's not actually made of fabric and is just a piece of skin... like all the rest of his cloths.. Just let that sink in..
@Exile_Sky 𝗠𝗺𝗺𝗺... 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙛𝙮.
So he's naked all the time
LMAO
@Exile_Sky thanks for ruining naked man simulator for me
@Alvano Funes Essentially. Granted that's not to say that they couldn't "change" their "clothes". They are outright shape-changers, what they look like has more to do with memory and intention than physical fact
I've waited 4- no, 5000 years for this
lol, well I hope you enjoy sir Clarke.
Nice JoJo reference.
Ay stop the cap xD
I think it's maybe because he wanted to end he's suffering and let James killed him because he's power courrpted him
Facts
Karen: “He’s on the building!”
Alex Mercer: “I know...”
Karen: “Oh, shi-!”
Shes called karen for a reason
@asmodeus2464 lmfao
Alternate ending:
Karen: *transforms into mercer and turns towards the camera*
When Karen meets the manager
Karens vs mercer!
this is actually what i always keep thinking about the ending of prototype 2. there just NO WAY in hell that heller can defeat mercer. mercer is on another level. and besides, mercer IS the virus itself. he might as well regenerate back INSIDE heller.
I'd say that Mercer lost because Heller unknowingly convinced him to give humanity a second chance.
@tuskinraider5926 Alex Mercer let heller win so he can access Mercer's memories of the reason why Alex Mercer turned into a villain
@startrack3898 This! I like this. Good start to a third title.
@xaura-c9fimagine new protag is about to absorb James, who now has the same motivations as Alex, but new protag realises that James is going easy on them and says "Something's not right" and doesn't absorb James
I knew Mercer was holding back when he didn't use his body armor, God I miss that from the first game!
Right? So cool and badass, worth the parkour limiter
You can use the Radnet skin
I think the company was making a huge plot for prototype 3 but prototype 2 failed because of what they did to alex, the fans fave character.
Please don't use The Lord's name in vain
Mercer is not actually the real Alex Mercer who died at the Penn Station before the virus took over him.
@assembled1855 that is literaly stated in the first minute my dude....also we, prototype fans, will always call him Alex Mercer
@clientcomun1958 More like Zeus. Alex Mercer was the virus's role.
@assembled1855 does he shoot lightning
@CRAB_MENTALITY No, it was his codename. Play the whole game or watch the whole walkthrough and you'll understand
Don’t forget when heller consumed Mercer he said and I quote “I am above life and death heller just hasn’t realized it yet”
It was “I am above life or death, so is heller he just hasn’t realised it yet
I'm mad at the fact that you messed up the quote
The exact quote I remember from memory: "I am no longer bound by life or death, Dana. I've moved beyond that... Heller has as well... he just hasn't realized it yet."
@AlaReDuS correct
@Anxmaly666 thanks for the confirmation 👍
It's time for a comeback now
Alex ??? Why da fuck do you let heller win 🤡
@Alex.J.Mercer1 consume THE *WRITERS*
@Alex.J.Mercer1 yesss
@Aurthurmorgan-c8i6p they got bankrupt guys they didnt really have a choice so they ended mercer here but the story is not really finished yet you guys forgot that mercer gave hellers powers. Its kinda like he gave his 1%/0.0000001 of his dna to heller so he can just come out in hellers body if he wanted to mercer is immortal the only way to kill him is burn him into a pool of lava so he cant regenerate anymore
we know your alive. heller didnt consume your arms :) so u built your self
If Heller couldn't beat Alex at full strength, then he is screwed if Pariah comes around
Well, he has all of Mercer's full power now, plus his own.
plus the evolved alex absorbed before the fight
@SaifYasser01 and power, look how you get new power in game, and the lore says you get it all too.
Exellent Analysis
but there's a problem with that
sure, he passed on his power onto someone who's worthy of them
but that doesn't change the world
Mercer knew he can't change the world or humanity, which is why he wanted to destroy it
Why then, would he let James win, and abandon his plan?
edit: well as i finished typing this i realised that James may have brought back his faith in humanity
@arn3107 He didn’t. Alex will never truly die as long as the virus remains.
That could literally be the plot for the 3rd game. You know if they ever decide to make it. Lol
Make is so they need to team up to defeat Pariah. Could be co-op too. One plays Mercer the other Heller.
@DatsRandom brooooooo
Pariah was cross. Cross was Greenes' child. They say it in the first game.
That would be kool
I wouldn't be surprised if Alex can't take over heller so he basically exists as a voice inside his head.
I hope everyone who sees this has a dope ass day.
This reminds me of Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul in a way his mind set at least
Can't stop thinking about if Heller's daughter has powers!!!
There's also foreshadowing in the first game of Alex becoming evil. In one of the cut scenes cpt. Cross asks Alex if there were any other infected leaders out there to which Alex responds with "no there aren't, at least not yet anyway."
why thank you. its been so far. got my new manga, im gonna read later.
I wish you a dope ass day as well.
No u
What annoys me is people dont realized this and just writes off Mercer as a generic bad guy to be beaten by the protagonist despite being obviously stronger.
He was obviously stronger from the beginning. After he absorbed those evolved he was like 10 times stronger.
@jamesloucks2562 yeah but logically you can't say heller had even a slight chance at defeating him.
@jamesloucks2562 it’s bad writing honestly . I played alittle of P2 and completely shifted away from the game .
Man I want to see a Prototype 3 someday...
It would be so cool.
2021 and I'm still waiting for this badboy to come back
Me too bro
@Ghhjfhjztd Same
Same bro
Same
Same 😔
I think they made Alex a villain as an excuse to have a second game more than it being any form of complex storytelling. They already did the, "Military bad, they made zombies," line so the only step forward was to get a new antagonist.
For thousands of years I lay dormant... Waiting for this day. Someone finally made this video.
While Mercer might have let Heller win, he was still rather surprised when Heller absorbed his hand. At the very least, Heller might have become a unique strain of the virus, and may actually be capable of countering Mercer in a proper fight.
I think that the bigger concern, and Alex's reason, was that Heller's uniqueness could help defeat pariah.
That DNA
Yeah, that's the only logical conclusion in this mess of a story. I still think that's a bit digging into the story, finding sense where writers didn't intend on it to come through like this, and that Heller just has plot armor, but I'd like to think Mercer had a plan like this. And also he's not dead since he's the virus, and if anything, he'd just be in Heller, waiting or hibernating in unconsciousness.
I agree totally but he did a damn good job finding explanations where they’re weren’t any, I really hope we get a P3 & get to play Mercer again, some way.. somehow..
Does everyone to this to when they analyze characters from games and movies
@EchoXero-rp8yr Heller cut his arm off there's an 80% that a bird would touch it
They could have made an AMAZING coop game with James and Alex as playable characters for a two man team
coop for what dude, destroy the nyz ?
@furkann2851 lmao funny
@tahahasan236 ama olsa iyi olurdu bro
I always wondered why the Mercer boss battle was so weak, when I finished the boss fight I was like "is.. that it?... no way could that be it there's have to be more to this because the fight was too easy"
you had to kill him 3 times..?
Change the difficulty then lol 😂
Imagine a prototype 3 with mercer's consciousness lives on inside heller's body like a parasite except heller slowly gets consumed by mercer and and heller becomes the parasite.
Arkham knight just with extra steps
Nah I want one with Pariah
Or how about this mercer is in the hellers mind but instead of trying to take him over is guiding him and giving him advice and helping him out when he needs it
@Zeroth-d7n straight up vincent and johnny from cyberpunk 2077😮
@Dreadshotqkinda
Also Alex did not use all of his ability during their fight, giving the idea that Alex actually wants Heller to consume him. Also Its quite odd that Alex did not even try to resist and escape Heller giving the idea that all of it was Alex plan.
bro keep making experiment on these series for fans, we like it
I don’t remember all the details, but my understanding of the situation is that Heller’s “annoyingly resilient DNA” made him a more suitable host for Blacklight than Alex, which would explain him becoming more powerful as well as Alex being unable to consume him.
Lets not forget than heller consumed alot super soldiers, evolved and blacklight creatures(like for real he consumes 4 goliaths in the game and those things are big, really big)
Nope...
@CeeDoubleU K
@ivanhernandez8070 he got you there man
@nikolasferreira3247 also don't forget that mercer was the virus it self
Interesting theory about Alex. Also like your comparisons to anime characters.
Thank you
@Cinemalec_XL don’t mention it.
As someone who's played both prototype 1 and prototype two, Heller did seem a lot weaker than Mercer was in prototype 1. And it did seem like Alex Mercer was letting James Heller kill him.
I doubt Mercer is even truly dead.
He’s fucking dead.
Mercer is dead blacklight is neither dead or alive
He's Alive because if you look at the ending of Prototype 1 you can see he regenerates from a nuke, Alex arms were ripped off at the end of prototype 2 so he can regenerate with his arms.
@duplicatehedgehog that may be the virus taking over alex's memories, his brain might have been destroyed
@fogz Fair Point
Alex is more human than i thought lol
My head cannon is that this was a body double of his.
"NOOOOOO but mercer couldn't kill helleeerrrrrrr 😭"
mercer if he didn't want heller alive: ∆ + O
Ironic
@knightsotl796 dry
Well he could of consumed pariah the ‘ perfect infected’ tht was born but I don’t think even the comics go into pariah, a waste of sequel bait.
@bigbobbacharcoal Not to metnioned when he said " he just doesnt know it yet" means he had a plan with Heller in it.
Elijah Ferguson yep but we will never know
i always thought it like after being consumed mercer just entered a dormant state in james mind, waiting for the right momment to asume control, after all wasnt mercer like the "Father" of the whole second virus.
So many years later, people are still interested in this masterpiece of a franchise, i wish we could have got another prototype.
Mercer didn't actually die in the fight Heller cut Mercer arm off and not consuming it remember on Prototype 1 when Mercer comeback just from a bit of himself getting eaten by a crow I think Mercer have ulterior motive for that but we will not know because the game will not be continued sadly :(
"..there's no way James could rise that level of power..."
That's what every anime villain say all the time. I read Dragon Quest Dai again and realized it is about how a bunch of kids adventuring for several weeks were able to foil a villain's decades of world domination plan.
It would be pretty dope for these games to get remastered
Your channel is so underrated dude these videos are really entertaining
Cant beleive they made a character so edgy, cool, full of rage and after that make him 29...
Yeah I can’t believe that either.
I always feel that Alex already wanted to die so he let James kill him
Six or seven years of remembering prototype and seeing this as my recommended.
Thank you for the warm introduction.
So basically Mercer engineered Heller's victory and assured that the plan of humanity united goes on, at least in a way
I always had a theory that after mercer seen the fact that heller couldn't be absorbed he saw the potential of taking Heller's body over think about it.
@keithkania3810 well mercer is the virus
can be argued that he the most powerful and knowledgable evolved could pull some weird fuckery and take over a consumer
You know, in the fight Alex barely used most of his abilities, even the Devastators, if anything I feel he was simply testing Heller and see if he eventually becomes the top of the food chain
And considering the comics basically given Alex a hatred for Humanity on top of him being a diagnosed Sociopath, and his overall attitude and impact in his life before he got his powers - I feel he simply got tired of the world being what it is and despite his efforts trying to forcfully infect the world as a way of being "The next step in the evolution", it seemed deep down, he wanted to die, because being the Virus, he has a major healing factor so he cant die from a gunshot to the head or something, someone at his level has to beat him down
And maybe during the fight, he saw potential in Heller's powers and him feeling acceptance that someone rivaled him and then finally put him down, that makes sense as to why his fight felt underwhelming in comparison to us playing him the first time
But then there's another theory mostly talked of by fans - what if him being Consumed was the plan all along? With everything he's capable of, it would be possible if he can consume and absorb Heller from the inside out. Hell for all we know he didnt think Heller would get that far, so he thought it'd be wise to allow himself to be absorbed so he can then later on, eventually find a way to kill and consume Heller from within
If anything, with all this talk of PARIAH in the first game and how "it" is hyped up, if we EVER get a 3rd game, it is insane to think on what it can do in game, if its ever shown
yeah bruh its true
When I first heard Mercer saying "Welcome to the top of the food chain", as a kid it gave me chills, and I had almost forgotten about this. I just finished replaying this game yesterday, and it really brought back that core memory
I felt the same way, I was hoping to see some Piccolo/Nail/Kami moments in his head for the 3rd game...but we will never get that now 😕
I have a strong suspicion the devs had a plan for a third game and just never got to make it
The moment in the boss battle Mercer did not even go super armor mode despite 3 stages speaks a lot. Alex most likely gave in to die because he is tired with everything. Like the video said it's lonely being at the top. Or the budget wasn't enough to cover the boss stages during production.
Probably a budget and time constraints issue

^ Cole & Alex are OG’s🤌🏼
I hope they make a prototype 3 and I do hope they bring back Alex since all he needs is a little of his blood to consume something as shown in the prototype 1 ending
Imagine in prototype 3 we play as THE REAL ALEX MERCER not the virus mercer
I hope one day they create a prototype 3 in where you get to play as Heller, Mercer and 2 other new characters. The idea being they all share the same body and can split up. That way you create single/multiplayer. But they won't do that
Didn't expect Bleach in this video!
Thank you so much for this even if its not really what the writers themselves had intended. Anyone that played P1 knows that, just from in-game accomplishments along, that there was no way in hell he could beat alex. U have now given sense to otherwise absolute nonsense.
Prototype 3 could've revealed this theory to be true and it's explained by Heller since he managed to absorb Mercer's memories and experiences.
This video proves that if you don’t read the lore between games then you might miss something that won’t make sense in the second game
hmm hmm the truth is that I was disappointed when I learned that the former protagonist had to be dealt with and then defeated in p2. That's why I didn't even play the game. Yes, I still don't, and I won't.
However, this little video clarified why it was necessary. I found it interesting, thanks for the video
I think that Mercer is obsessed with Amaya is because she shared a same trait as what Pariah have, the immunity to the virus to freely manipulate it.
Bro I love the fact that you brought this awsome game up and also used a quote from Bleach
To be honest I feel like the cannon ending should have been Heller and Alex work together
if Mercer actually lost on Purpose, wouldn't Heller know by now, since he consumed him?
the story was bad written. if mercer really wants amaya to be the mother of new world, then why he didn't infect her in the first place? why mercer didn't kill his sister? and then why mercer keep them in the vault?
and that's why i said the story was bad written, because the cutscene didn't mention his plan
Heller didn't know how to use a black watch computer even after consuming an untold number of there scientist. I dont think the writers for p2, honest cared for the story.
@venom0825 😂 it was bad written, what do u expect
@venom0825 now that you mention it, he still has no idea how to use the computer, it is possible that he didnt fully consume all the memories Mercer have, but yeah I agree with yoel silitonga, it is bad written
I really hated prototype 2 just because you had to kill Alex
mate you touched my heart deep down i always felt like mercer can't be a bad guy.. Love you mate
Back when i played it i did feel like Mercer was literaly toying with me
He still tauting James until the end.
Bring Mercer back Prototype. He is too Edgy to be forgotten.
I've been waiting for this soooo loong 😂 love mercer's mostly unknown (at least i think not many know about. i definelity didn't) and how badass he is. Amazing video great work keep it up😄
Thank you 🙏🏻
What had happened between prototype and the second game would've been an amazing game....
The fact a video talking about an extremely underrated series I just got the remaster for, after Platinuming it years ago.
we can also say, mercer got tired for the way he lives.
