  • 11 Features Manufacturers REMOVED That Are FINALLY Coming Back
    For years, car manufacturers treated common sense like a software bug. Physical buttons were replaced with touchscreens. Spare wheels disappeared in favour of tyre foam. Oil dipsticks were deleted and replaced with sensors that fail in hot oil. When drivers complained, they were told to “adapt” - to trust software, subscriptions, and sealed systems instead of their own judgment.
    But in 2026, something remarkable is happening. The industry is quietly retreating. Not because executives suddenly rediscovered wisdom - but because customers revolted, sales suffered, regulators intervened, and the data became impossible to ignore. Euro NCAP will now penalise cars without physical controls for critical functions. Volkswagen publicly admitted removing buttons was a mistake. BMW has brought back spare wheels. Hyundai, Porsche, and even Ferrari are restoring real controls after usability studies proved touchscreens are slower and more dangerous.
    This video breaks down eleven features manufacturers stripped away - and the hard evidence showing why they’re coming back. From Vi Bilägare’s real-world distraction tests that showed touchscreen cars taking over four times longer to perform basic tasks, to the absurd cost and failure rates of electronic substitutes for simple mechanical parts, the pattern is clear: “modernisation” often meant cost-cutting disguised as progress.
    We look at physical climate controls, spare wheels, oil dipsticks, naturally aspirated engines, manual handbrakes, hydraulic steering feel, fog lights, manual gearboxes, and the broader fight for driver autonomy and the right to repair. Some of these features are already returning. Others are mandated by regulation. And a few are still under threat - surviving only because certain brands refuse to abandon simplicity.
    This isn’t nostalgia. It’s accountability. Cars became harder to use, more expensive to maintain, and less trustworthy - and buyers pushed back. If you care about usability, safety, long-term ownership, and actually understanding your own vehicle, these reversals matter more than horsepower figures or screen size.
    The rebellion worked. And it’s not finished yet.

      Kia EV3 has NO DRIVER HANDBOOK!. There is an online manual. So what do I do when offline? AND, trying to flick back and forth through pages to find a specific feature is just not as user friendly as a hard copy manual, particularly one that runs to between 700 and 900 pages. My printer has broken. Officeworks wanted about 700 A$ to print a colour copy for me . I love the car, even despite some minor irritations. But, it is my first all electric vehicle and there're lots of hidden features, most of which I am entirely unaware and only slowly learning by trial and error.
      KIA, PLEASE BRING OUT A HARD COPY OF THE MANUAL AT NO EXTRA COST TO A NEW OWNER.

      Here's another oxymoron: Anything shipped with a lith-ion battery, here in Uhmurika, has to have this big label warning that it cannot be shipped via air. Meanwhile, on a large commercial flight you have 300 cell phones and probably close to that number of laptops. But good to know that a battery with that label isn't in the cargo hold.

      More so now perhaps, than ever with Roads dereriorated to almost Moon Surface quality in places, more tradesmaen using Trailors and spilling nails screws and whatever onto roads that only get cleaned by rain. Buying my first car without a Spare Wheel, perhaps 16 yeas ago, we were told that statistically we'd get a puncture every 3.5 years and it wasn't worth carrying the extra weight of a Spare, we started getting punctures as roads were let go a couple of years later, and bought a "get you home" tyre. Latest mark of same car is a Hybrid with no obvious place to store a spare. Warning sytem for deflating tyres, and foam with mini compressor do not inspire confidence.

      @Bercilakdehautdesert-yt1gd Month ago +25

      @BasilPunton Utter rubbish! If your conventional handbrake cable goes it's £15 and 20 minutes to fit a new one on your drive. If an electronic hand brake goes pop you are into serious moolah, up to a grand, and on many models you may need to use a computer to tell the ECU it has a new module or part.
      As a driver I like to know where the handbrake is set, and I can use it in an emergency, in fact, on many French cars the handbrake operated the front wheels for specifically that reason.
      As for handbrake turns yes, silly, childish, but guess what, in snow you may well find the only way to avoid a collision is to use that handbrake to lock the rear wheels, preventing your ABS from killing your brakes.

    I had an '04 Mercedes without a dipstick which was idiotic.
    Driving along suddenly the computer tells me that there is too little oil. OK but it did not tell as a dipstick would how much oil was missing.
    To work that one out you have to buy oil, drive the car to a level spot, add some oil and run the engine, wait for the computer to make up its mind, add a bit more oil. Repeat until computer is happy.
    Since I was in a rush I just dumped 1L of oil in it. Car was happy...until I reached the motorway when the computer decided that there was too much oil and put the engine in limp mode without prior warning so suddenly the car reduced speed from 70 to 50mph which is somewhat disconcerting when you are in the inside lane. Had to go carry on home at 50mph, go to my mechanic to have the oil changed. Turns out that there were 2L too much oil in it so the low oil warning was false to start with. A dipstick would have avoided all that panic and expense.
    Never buying a car without dipstick ever again.

      One of the things I like about our 2024 SUV is the fact the tailpipe is tucked under the rear apron, completely out of sight. No ugly bare steel tailpipe, no chrome tailpipe cover trying to dress it up, no dual tips with one being fake, and definitely not dual fake tips. It's an SUV, not a sports car (although it's still pretty fun to drive).
      Fake engine noise might be the single stupidest addition to cars in their entire history. If I want a car so well insulated that I can't hear the engine, I sure as hell don't want that feature defeated by having engine noise piped in or generated (I prefer to hear a bit of the engine growl on a gas vehicle).

      Mild pushback here. All electric or hybrid vehicles need to have SOME sort of noise when they're moving. The blind and visually-impaired pedestrians absolutely use sound to know if there is a moving vehicle near them. They use vehicle sounds to know when it is safe to cross an intersection, in addition to other techniques. Vehicles do not need to sound like F1 or NASCAR, but they should have some noise.

Bean counters, who try to squeeze up every penny they can, and often shouldn't.

      Hear me out, few years ago while driving on the country side, my alloy wheel hit a pothole and it bent the wheel.
      It swapped the damaged wheel with the "full-size" spare wheel and i was back on the road in 20 minutes.
      A repair kit would have been useless on a bent wheel.
      If i had to wait for a recovery truck, it would have probably taken 4h (i was in the country side)
      Now my "new" car is a MPV with no spare wheel but a repair kit, I've never used such device.
      The instructions are printed in small letters, barely visible (Still useless on a damaged wheel).
      I need to be fair though, the 3rd row folding seats take the space for a potential spare wheel.

      Thank GOD for CarPlay. CD’s were clumsy and distracting. They skipped all over the music track with every bump in the road. They were 10x’s more expensive than just subscribing to Apple music and plugging into CarPlay for $11/month with a 100 million song assembled playlist controlled by verbal command. Or downloading a few thousand songs to your iPod, iPhone or iPad for in car playback quality vastly superior to CD’s.

    • @russellthechemist8291
      @russellthechemist8291 Month ago

      @LawrenceMarkFearonWRONG!!!!
      Why Phone Music is More Distracting:
      High Interaction Rate: Changing playlists, skipping songs, or dealing with notifications requires frequent, often visual, interaction with a screen.
      Touchscreen Dangers: Interacting with infotainment systems, such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, has been shown to be more distracting than using a physical CD player, with some studies suggesting it can be more distracting than drunk driving.
      Extended Eyes-Off-Road Time: Research indicates drivers can take their eyes off the road for up to 16 seconds while handling music apps, significantly increasing reaction times.
      Increased Cognitive Load: Using phone apps, even via voice control, often requires more mental effort than simply listening to a pre-set album, leading to slower reactions to hazards.

      @jernejfunkl8300 That's why my daily is over 30 years old and I still consider it too modern. Accept no compromise. Most features of a 21st century car are deal-breakers and red lines I won't cross. Most annoying for me is any computer at all! But 80's cars weren't as convenient to buy as the 90's one when I needed one in a hurry.
      I don't do new for the sake of buying new. If I want something better quality than that available new, I go to the past. Some examples include my 40 year old sewing machine, 55 year old record player, 100 year old pocket watch, 150 year old wardrobe and the clothes I make myself!

    Our neighbor's Subaru shut down it's ENTIRE electrical system on our private road. The woman got he car stopped using the regular brake, but had no power assist. That was OK at the low speed and the flat drive.
    But she could not get out of the car! Oh, yes, the doors would open. But the transmission was electronically shifted. so she could not shift into park.
    Oh, well, you say, just set the parking brake... Except it was electronically set. She could not get out of he car as there was NO WAY TO KEEP IT FROM ROLLING. And she could not hit her horn to attract attention to have someone chock her wheels. She had to call her husband, who called me to go out and help. With a clear curb, I told her to turn the wheels towards the curb, and ease the car forward (by gravity) until she was against the curb and stopped (she was asking why she did not think of that). I have now seen two Subarus (this and another one) with electrical bus failure.
    NO brakes? Oh, good, just use your hand brake. Oh.... No hand brake. Not so good.
    People LOVE my 85 Toyota. Manual windows (which have never failed). Manual locks (that have NEVER needed service or replacement). Dash levers (instead of dials or push buttons) that operate physical cables to change heat and venting. One DID fail a few years ago. $34 for the part and less than an hour to install. My 2006 Dodge turbo diesel lost the ability to defrost the front window. A $2600 repair, and days to complete. No, thank you.

    Biggest error & Safety issue is Lane assist not being turned off permanently , OFF MEANS OFF , not back on when you start the car again !
    What if you're avoiding a collision from a idiot moving in your lane & your trying to avoid them & lane assist is fighting the steering to keep you in the lane , who's the moron that came up with that idea 😡

    • @TheTronder007
      @TheTronder007 Month ago +6

      That idiot in your lane could be there BECAUSE OF lane assist.. My dad has a 2025 model Xpeng G6 Performance.. If it's not disabled, you will be battered with warnings that you are departing your lane, and the car actually tries to steer you into the opposing lane/traffic! It makes for a horrible notchy and tiering steering feal.. in the EU/EEC area as far as I have come to understand the EU has mandated that it is turned on EVERY time you start the car 😞
      ISA (Intelligent Speed Assistance) is an other feature that is more irritating than helpful even though it might not be as big of a security risk as Lane Assist I view it as just a nanny-state gimmick.. it goes off when the speedometer shows 1 Km/h above the speed limit, which means that due to the speedometers (at least in Europe) are calibrated to show around 3-4 Km/h more that your actual speed, which in turn means that the ISA "alarm bells" goes off on you BEFORE you even reach the speed limit..

It's a real problem even on the main roads here in Norway, not to mention all the narrow smaller roads here in Norway..

    I read the comment of the older guy and I absolutely agree with our fellow. I also have to say that it's not only older people that don't want screens while driving. I'm 31 and I have an absolute basic car as my first one. No screens, no stupid electronics, no touch screens/touch panels, no unnecessary electronic driving aids. Just buttons for the electric windows, a basic radio with an Aux jack, a manual handbrake and some big climate control buttons (with an orange backlit panel, which comes in very handy at night, it's very atmospheric). Plus ABS/EBD, CSC (Cornering Stability Control) and a simple 5-speed manual transmission to complement the Japanese, naturally aspirated, 998cc, chain-driven Inline-3. And that's it! You don't need anything more than these features for every day! 😎

      Not really. A lock cylinder is very easy to pick, and often only requiring raking. On more modern cylinders there are tools anyone can buy to defeat them. That's assuming it was designed well enough to prevent using a slim Jim or piece of wire.

    What car manufacture’s are getting wrong is they never write to a customer and ask them how they like a certain model and why the chose that particular model ,or why they chose from a different manufacturer. If they knew customer hated complicated basic functions hidden in touchscreen that kept them from getting modern cars and keeping their older cars longer

      You couldn't give me a current generation Mazda. I say that as a long-term Mazda fan, long before I bought my first one in 1983. Since then Mazda was always at the top of the comparison list each time I was shopping for a new vehicle, and I've owned seven total as a result. All were well built, reliable, and fun to drive, as were the models other family members owned.
      Sadly the Kodo design inverted Mazda's former philosophy of quality, practicality, and driveability first and style second, so now they are cool looking but cramped, awkward, and have poorer build quality compared to previous generations.

    Trouble is that car design is in the hands of younger people who have been brought up in the iPad era. Anything analogue is out straight away. In general terms new cars are bought by Companies or lease companies, those with disposable incomes ie. the retired or established middle aged. Young people with families have differing priorities. The disparity between the designers and the customers is obvious. Buyers want analogue they don’t want expensive servicing and black box replacements.

      I know what you mean. I had a tablet bought for me for Xmas years ago when they were something new. It took ages to set it up because it had no instruction book. After faffing about for an hour and finally getting it up and running, the first thing that popped up on the screen was a message "Do you want to watch a video of how to set up the tablet?" I wanted to see that an hour ago before I set up the tablet. I complained once that the new PC I had bought had no instructions. "It's in a file on the hard drive" I was told. What if it was the first PC I had ever had? These people have less intelligence than a pea.

    Curiously no one is mentioning the worst of them all. Normal doorhandles or a mechanical door handle system. That do not depend on some ECU/electronic opening system.
    Specially on EV's, the amount of people that already died burned on a car fire. Without being able to get out of the vehicle. By their own means is absolutely shocking. First responders also struggle since the car can't be opened from the outside either!
    YT is loaded with images of car accidents where the occupants barely escaped usually by the efforts of some courageous souls that risked their own lives to break glasses and remove the victims!

    LEDheadlights are shite, they are too bright and dazzle oncoming drivers, even when dimmed, blue white colour LED is terrible. Using bright LED's indiscriminately across the front of a vehicle seriously damages night vision. I'm looking at the Hyundai Tucson as the worst offender. A triumph of style over functionality, count them, there are at least 20.. Any driver over 50 will tell you how hard night driving has become. I had a Volvo V60 with LED lights and the lights were no better than a 2021 E class and auto dipping is another thing that needs to go in the bin.

    Also along with the front and rear fog lights every car should have two rear reversing lights, not just one. Reversing through a narrow gap you need both sides well illuminated!
    And why are some cars now being produced with ridiculously small indicator lights right up against the other lights which makes them harder to see and in some cars impossible.
