Try on Winreducer, it's better and complete.
@@maliciousfry But you can use it for free, just waiting 10 seconds if you are not in paid version, different from others that don't let you do anything if you haven't paid. Winreducer is full of tweaks and I apply them without paying a cent!
@@RafaelWojcik-od7mz That's an issue that doesn't happen on Winreducer.
Windows 10 pro getting games installed by default is ridiculous. Waiting for a company to sue MS for lost productivity from having employees play the pre installed games on what is supposed to be a business edition. I smell class action suit.
@@maliciousfry Thank you Eyevou, kept getting errors until i ran with those parameters on!
I was working on this very idea 12 years ago when I unexpectedly had a stroke. I only recently got back into programming again and decided to look around to see if anyone had minimized a Windows install yet. You did a great service for many Windows users and I am extremely appreciative for all your hard work on this! Fantastic! You got my attention and a new subscriber. 😁
Yes I had a stroke about 2 years to the day and it sucked but I’m coming back slowly… but I am working to get back and ad well I have just subscribed and have liked this particular issue as well! Thanks for saying exactly what I was thinking as well!!
I'm here from lowspecgamer, amazing content, man. Subbed.
Did he mention CHris in one of his videos?
@@LuisPipoComunica yes
@@jeremiahb.1868 lol, i know who lowspecgamer is but i already knew chris, didn't knew he mentioned chris, i'd supose that he was making a video about making windows faster for gaming, am i right?

First time I watch a 40 minute installation tutorial of windows for fun. Excellent job, really informative and entertaining, will definitely try this next time I format my computer!
Thanks a bunch Chis very cool stuff , this is my first attempt at customizing windows installs , you have a wealth of knowledge and very generous with it , keep sharing the love , and keep smiling :-)
I am preparing a bunch of Dell Optiplex systems for sale, this may have just made my life a lot easier.
In case anyone else might be having the same issue: I had to add two more paramters to the ESD 2 WIM Command:
dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:4 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity
This fixed it, thank you!
Thanks Chris. This is the type of video I enjoy the most. Great job!
Man, these tools would have saved me so much annoying phone call from customers as a system admin, People were reporting another failed Windows installation due to updates and useless features that bug out. I will use them gratefully in the future, thanks Chris! :D
Are you a mind reader? I was literally searching for this yesterday. Thankfully I'm subbed to you.
Hello Chris,
Over the past year or so, I've been researching upgrading from "Windows 7" to "Windows 10". Of all the Streamers and videos out there, I found that yours were truly the BEST because you took the time to explain everything "STEP-BY-STEP" in DETAIL and did not over-complicate things.
I have watched your "JULY 20. 2019" Video "Minimal Windows 10 install / ISO Creation, Setup, and Config" dozens of times, and was finally ready to create my first "Windows 10 ISO" following your guidelines, but to my dismay the the COMPONENTS shown in the latest "Windows 10" were not the same as shown in your "JULY 20. 2019" Video. Microsoft has added a bunch of new components.
I would REALLY REALLY Appreciate it if you made a NEW "Minimal Windows 10 install / ISO Creation, Setup, and Config"
I am sure others would appreciate it as well.
Thank You for all the time and effort that you have spent on your RUclips channel so far. I have subscribed to it because I enjoy your content
EXACTLY the video i needed. Thank you so much. Now i will able to limp along on W until my upcoming Ryzen 9 Debian build, without banging my head on the desk.
Great video, Chris. I'll definitely be using this.
Great video, nice studio! :)
This is the first time I've seen how to make a lean and quicker version of any Windows OS.
I didn't know it was this easy to do. Thanks, Chris, for showing us how it is done. :-}
Mad skills Chris..thanks for the vid!
You should do a 2022 version of this video
now 2024
*Truly a useful video 😊👍👍👍*
lmao, I was trying to find that on your channel literally yesterday :)
Thank you so much Chris. This is exactley what I have been looking for. I will try minimalize Win 10 v1709 Swedish version.
Hat off to you.
Thanks a lot. Can't wait to try your new tips.
Some hours ago i was thinking of creating slimmed down installer for windows just because i wanted windows for a project. I was pissed because didn't find any reliable guide online to slim windows and you made video on it. Thanks 😊♥️♥️
Thanks for the video Chris! I am in agreement with you in regards to LTSC. Even though I have seen guides to building LTSC from eval ISOs and such, I still am a bit suspicious of the tools used for the same reasons you talked about in the videos.
Ltsc is amazing but people aren't going to pay $400 for a license, I don't care what the RUclips trolls say. Key sites are shady as hell and I will never recommend one. It's why I don't cop out and say just use that.
An aside: I think it is great practice for us IT pros to use tools like WinTools and find "legal" ways to work with stuff like this. Legitimately earn and maintain our cred, so to speak. I remember being proud of myself when I figured out slipstreaming with Windows XP using tools like RyanVM with OEMbios, BTS driverpacks, etc to install Windows XP on OEM laptops that already had XP licenses. It was a bit of a grey area, but it was still better than dealing with the pirating scene / warez scene. And now, I am really enjoying being a total student again learning the ways of Linux.
your videos are so good, that i want to download them, because i want to preserve this knowledge.
This was super helpful for bringing new life to old machines. Thanks a bunch, Chris!
A little random, but do you really live on the Pitcairn Islands? According to Wikipedia, that'd make you one out of only 47. Pretty crazy.
Have a great day!
Windows debloater is great I got that from one of your earlier videos. I only use Windows to manage iTunes on my phone and iPad. Everyday home computing I dual boot to Linux Mint.
If you use the Media Creation Tool, it will give you the version of the installer that includes install.esd. If you spoof your Browser User agent to be something other than Windows (like Mac or Linux), it will offer you to download the ISO directly. And the ISO it downloads is the version with Install.wim.
I discovered this after having problems with the powershell DISM conversion process. It would seem to convert/extract just fine, but then when I loaded up Win Toolkit and pointed to the newly created install.wim, it would give me an error of "Parameter is incorrect".
So I went ahead and grabbed the direct download ISO, which coincidentally seems to be the version you are working with. That fixed the issue, and now I am cooking right along. Thanks for the video.
www.howtogeek.com/427223/how-to-download-a-windows-10-iso-without-the-media-creation-tool/
Here's a link for people who want a step-by-step guide. Following this I got the same file size iso and .wim file included of the same size.
I was having the install.esd problem as well. Thank you for posting the solution: Download from Linux! 👍🏻
@@Just2Dimes Thanks man
Thank you so much for this video good sir but honestly, it would have been nicer if more explanation is showed/given in the WinToolKit part. I know it's going to be longer but for us viewers who are in between novice and advanced, it would be really worth it. Nonetheless, you did what you can and once again, I'm grateful for it. Have a good day!
Came here from LowSpecGamer, what a good video, more things to do while in quarantine :-)
To get an ISO with the WIM file already in it, I recommend visiting the microsoft download site with an IPad user agent. It will then offer you to *directly* download an ISO, instead of the creation tool.
To fake my user agent, I just used the Firefox developer options, with the thing that lets you test responsive websites. Switch to iPad, CTRL+F5, configure and download.
Blackberry works too!
THANKS MAN IT WORKS
Thank-You so much!
I have mostly Dell professional hardware. I always use the Dell images. I am going to give this a try. It will save me hours after installing I can see. This would especially useful for people who own like netbooks and probably even ultrabooks. It's always raddled my chain a little to have multiple programs all doing the same stuff, and I prefer Dell's own utilities over Windows, so naturally a lot of waste can be saved! Thank you Chris!
Had to subscribe... good tips and things I actually need to do. Thanks!
Hey Chris. I went through and had to extract the esd and I kept getting the error "The parameter is incorrect" when loading the install.wim in Win Toolkit. Until I extracted it with "/Compress:max" at the end of the command line.
Thanks a million man. I had the same problem as well. Works!
SAME!!!!! HALP!
Thanks
@@ChrisTopher-wl6pd Make sure to do the /Compress:max the whole line so it will look like DISM /export-image /sourceimagefile:install.esd /sourceindex:1 /destinationimagefile:install.wim /compress:max and it should work properly. Just keep in mind it will take time to make the file since it is compressing it. Just leave it to do it.
@@vensirestudios Thank you!!!!!!! I was having the same issue!!!!!!
That's a big studio :>
thanks for the trick about the esd to wim conversion, that was a problem for loading the iso's to WDS on windows server, i'll try this next time!
In the past, I used Winreducer to create minimal Windows ISOs. Good to know other similar tools.
Chris... Thank you? Oh... Major Geeks. I haven't been there since 2007 or so.
It actually looks very 2007ish. Love it ❤
I think the custom ISO is around the same size as the original because you'd need to remove the components from all the other editions in the WIM, prolly it's just better to just get rid of the others using that dism export-image thing you mentioned for ESD files
Good
Came back here to let you know that I used this technique to great effect. I have an upcoming tele-medical appointment coming up that I could only access using Windows on my laptop which has Xubuntu 18.04 running. I made the iso and use Virtualbox to run it from an SD card. The files for the VM only use 10.5GB of the 32 GB SD.
You are amazing!.... You are giving away gold... Literally. Thank you so much!
Did you entered the matrix yet from the computer behind?
Btw just the logo and intro left I think
I have a pro license with both Win 7 and Win 10 on separate removable boot drives under the same license, but I haven't booted either in many months. Linux, baby!!!

Chris Titus Tech I’m sadly way to deep in the windows net :( I still play a few games and my capture card to capture my Nintendo switch signal also doesn’t work in Linux :(
I thought about turning it into a dumb game streaming system in my network but no clue

Great video! This can be very useful for a gaming PC.
I've been using ntlite for 2 years now I got the home license and imo it's totally worth it for me. I have been running ltsc since it came out and verified its hash, besides a problem with Nvidia driver early on I had no problems.
If you could do a video about MSMG I think it would help a lot of people, I use it alongside with ntlite it's not as easy to use but it's completely free.
Thank you so much for making this video 😘
And remember the Microsoft Definition: "Embrace, and extend and then extinguish." - Wendell
How about a video on how to make a custom image with apps and programs already installed. Like installing windows with VLC, Chrome, Gimp, Steam, etc.
for this, you need to delve into WinPE. Even as a sysadmin, I'm not bothering with it. Simply configuring one machine and using it as a clone source with sysprep is faster :>
Someone who doesnot blow up your mind with an awful music and a loud voice. Thanks for your great work.
Excellent tutorial i ever seen ✌️
Just wondering, are you using Chrome or was it just for purpose of video's sake? :-D
For the most part I agree with you about the MS Updates - especially recently, many of the updates have been rather troublesome to say the least. However, you really should mention that by delaying updates, you also potentially leave yourself open for newer exploits. I do delay updates personally but never quite that long. It never takes more than about 3 days for people to realize there is a problem with updates and if it's serious enough for MS to pull it. Usually, 1 week is sufficient for a delay. (Of course, the feature updates matter less so delay them as long as you would like.) That said, it should be up to the individual to weigh out potential for exploit vs potential for bad/unwanted updates and decide for themselves.
Also, if you are managing multiple computers and can afford to dedicate a server to it, I highly recommend running WSUS so you can pick & choose just what updates your systems receive and when. System Center is also nice but for the smaller organizations that can't afford it, there are free alternatives like Wsus Package Publisher. PatchMyPC is also really good for keeping 3rd-party programs up to date. Their "Home Updater" is free and works great, even for new installs (I use it similar to ninite - it doesn't install the bloat that some of these packages often try to bundle in their installers).
great source of info Chris, Thanks I was looking for a detailed video on all this. So tired of MS bundling of crap users can't have control over.
INCREDIBLY USEFUL! THANK YOU! SUBSCRIBED! 🤓👍
Chris, when I open the wim file I got an error : "The parameter is incorrect"
This worked for me after getting "The parameter is incorrect". Don't forget to change the value after "/sourceindex:" to the one you want (for me Windows 10 Pro was 6)
if anyone gets parameter error try this command to export install.win
"dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:6 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity"
Helped me out. Thanks
Thank you for the help your awsome
This is very useful... thanks.
Thanks you Chris, I have Windows installed but don't really use it because I use Linux 99 percent of the time but I would like to make that Windows 10 very minimalist
keep getting this error when extracting the ESD file An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format
Important to mention: disabling "Search and Indexing" will leave you with a broken start menu, in the sense that you will not be able to type to look/search for something. Personally, I consider this a huge problem. I always press the windows key and type the name of the applications or settings I'm looking for (I don't even use the mouse), and having that disabled was just terrible for me.
I have search / indexing disabled and I can type in apps that are installed. I use voidtools everything for searching for files elsewhere because it is instant rather than taking hours.
I have the same Matrix back ground, hell I watched this thing when you uploaded it almost a year ago and just noticed that kde plasma background in the background lol
Amazing work !!
Would you give an idea for a " Home user " with a couple of Machines at home connected, what to remove and what to keep. It would be of great help for people like me with little knowledge about what we do.
Thanks.
Chris do you have a 2020 version of this amazing info?
Here you go amigo ruclips.net/video/8E6OT_QcHaU/видео.html
you have to download it with a spoofed webclient, else you wont get the wim file. The wim conversion doenst work anymore
The company I work for uses Windows 10 IoT (LTSB) 2016 and before we install our proprietary software there are like 10 config changes that have to be done prior to launching the application install. Its not a huge deal for a one off but I have massive site getting an upgrade at the end of the year and I will have to install 20-30 PCs so any way to speed that up would be awesome lol. I think you just showed me a tool I can use to completely (or at least mostly) automate the install. My nerd project for the weekend suddenly became testing out some theories. THANKS SO MUCH! :-)
I stumbled across this video trying to remove all the crap out of Windows 10, and as your hatred of so many aspects of Windows 10 came through I knew I had found my people and subscribed.
How are you able to capture the screen, even while rebooting & installing Windows?

@JDFantm Lord don't do that please
Can you do an update for versions 22H2? The ESD to WIM conversions seems to work but then after selecting the new WIM in WinToolKit, it just says "The parameter is incorrect"
I have tried last month and had the same problem
I've a similar .iso saved for new machine installs at my work, the only thing worse than stock win10 is OEM win10... great video !

Integrating Onedrive in FileExplorer is an essential part of Microsoft its business strategy. After MS got in trouble with the authorities for bundling software (I would call it crapware) like Internet Explorer MS decided to tightly integrate such software into the OS to not get in legal trouble yet keep bundling that kind of software as a part of their EEE strategy.
Offtopic, good luck with the soundproofing. I suggest towels, oddly it works better than expensive and professional sound-dampening tiles. See the video which I refered you to yesterday. Focus mostly on the corners.
Matt Perkins, the guy that runs the RUclips channel DIYperks has a couple of really excellent videos on diy soundproofing for content creators. I'm pretty sure his first video used a bunch of towels. He's also got some really cool silent PC builds and other geeky things on his channel that I really liked. Hope this helps!
I removed OneDrive using a popular script. At first it seemed to work but now whenever i'm doing a search I get a message saying that OneDrive is inaccessible. PITA
The legal angle is interesting. It implies that we'll see more of this kind of integration in future versions. There's no legal definition of what comprises an operating system, but that follows from there being no technical definition that everyone agrees on. So consumer versions of Windows are open to Microsoft's interpretation. Even my Pro version came with OneDrive and Cortana turned on. Maybe the Enterprise version is free of this stuff but I don't have a license.
Linux is looking better as Microsoft gets worse.
@Donald Mickunas
I think that towels look better, take the same color as that of the wall and you barely see it if you do it properly. See the RUclipschannel DIYPerks. For sure it will dampen more sound.
Oh god, When they removed start up programs from sysconfig and put it in task manager. I am convinced they are not system admins at microsoft.

Thanks Chris for all these tutorial on how to make the most minimal Windows10 install, but problem is I have to repeat all these ISO creation and debloating process all over again whenever Microsoft release a major updates.
BTW, I noticed, after all these minimal Windows install, your RAM consumption is still at 1.3GB, nothing can beat my minimal Linux install which only consume about 300MB of RAM running i3wm. XD
use MSMG toolkit...this wont break things and.....and...you and custom 1903v2 super easy rebuild
@Chris Titus Tech
What do you think about using Windows AIK for image editing,Chris?
This is awesome thank you
I know you are removing a lot of stuff, but what's stopping MS from installing them with updates without your consent? They seem to like doing that. I am on Linux, and also don't have any desire to return to Windows, and all the forced software and spying (and bad, bloated design) is why. This was interesting to see though, keep up the good work.
ltsc would be a great starting point
LTSC is fantastic, but do NOT use pirated operation system ISOs. Most people can't afford or are willing to pay the $400 in licensing fees, and key sites for LTSC are shady as hell. It is why I don't recommend LTSC for most users...

Incoming LEDs! Should get here on Monday.
Chris Titus Tech 👍 👍 You can’t run a RUclips tech channel without some LED background lights!
Seriously though, why does _every_ major tech channel on RUclips have some kind of LED or warm neon background lighting? I like the aesthetic, but is there a reason it’s so ubiquitous?
So I am using the latest windows build, and when I downloaded the media creation tool it just said "Thank you for using the latest version of windows" and didn't even let me download the iso. I really hate microsoft now.
You can ignore the Media Creation Tool if you change your user agent to an Operating System different to Windows, that way it will let you select an iso to download directly. You can also use software like Heidoc's Windows iso downloader (which uses original MS links) The media creation tool is a hassle.

I tried to follow this video. You're leaving a lot of gaps in the process, and making a lot of assumptions about viewers level of competence with Windows. To the point, it is getting way too tedious to follow along. I'm up to the point where I need to convert the install.esd file into a windows.wim file, using PowerShell, and I'm just getting error messages.
Yeah...one needs to have a high level of competence to follow this.
But maybe you should not be doing this then. If you experience difficulties with the PowerShell commands I would say either google your problem or just stop.
@@Laurensnl Yeah, I just stopped. I figured that Chris Titus Tech videos are way too advanced for me, so, I stopped bothering watching them as well. I consider myself an intermediate level coder. I need a more detailed explanation to advance to his level.
