Hillsborough: anatomy of a disaster

- As the jury return their verdict at the inquest into the lethal crush at Hillsborough in 1989, David Conn analyses the evidence with the help of recently released footage from the day, to build a picture of how 96 Liverpool supporters died at the Sheffield stadium, and how it has taken so long for the truth of their story to emerge

It still disgusts me that as a 12yr old child sat at home I clearly saw, live on TV, fans help each other up to the balcony, carry victims to safety, tend the dying & tear down hoardings for stretchers, but newspapers & Police blamed them & edited their statements accordingly. One statement from on high was that other officers statements should be edited "as it looks like the fans were more organised than we were". Despicable.
I can't imagine, damn...
yes agree and meanwhile journalists are taking photographs of people being crushed instead of helping.
Wasn't their job.. Today may have been different, their job was to take pictures. Can you imagine how they probably think the same?
What a terrifying way to die.
I never knew how scummy the police officer was. You let those people in and then lied to the media, blaming the fans who died? Absolutely disgusting.
welcome to the real world!
@@joseph7391how do you watch this and still perpetuate lies?
@@joseph7391correction “The police opened gate C so more fans could get in, oblivious to the fact that the stand they were going into was already full, the officer then blamed the fans.”
In 1981 after the problems at the semi final that year it was found that the capacity of the leppings lane terrace which was set at 10,100 was more than likely too high. The F.A banned hillsborough from hosting semi finals until the leppings lane terrace was made safe. The police and the club decided that the best way to do that was to break the terrace up into pens. This was done yet the capacity wasn't altered and was still kept at 10,100 even though space had been removed by the installation of the fences. The F.A decided to let semi finals be held at hillsborough after the fences had been added but didn't check on the safety of the terrace. Big mistake
It was an accident waiting to happen, apparanty for 8 years.

even as a proud Arsenal supporter, i shed a tear every year on the fifteenth of april. there was no need for a single death. RIP to all you beautiful Liverpool FC supporters.
Thank you so much
The evidence pictures to show what people were drinking showed a lot of soda cans 😣. He was hoping to show people were drinking alcohol but showed otherwise.
I thought exactly the same thing. Up yours Sykes!!
Exactly what I noticed. Almost a third of the people who died were between 10 and 19 years old, so there would have been a lot of soda and less alcohol. So heartbreaking
It's also completely normal that fans would have a beer en route to big game, any club fans do.
And the police got everyone of the victims tested for alcohol. The ten yr old was tested ffs.
On the day this happened, the news reports were showing footage of this massive brick wall, the outer wall of the stadium, swaying with the weight of people pressed against it on the OUTSIDE of the ground. Strangely, I've never been able to find this footage again.
Police probably covered it up.
Seriously? That’s insane. Was that live?

Mate are you not getting mixed up with heysel?? Don't shout at me if you're definately sure it was Hillsborough. But I've watched (or so I thought) every news bulletin on this disaster and I've never seen that. Heysel was a wall that collapsed. That's why I ask.
@@andyscullion ... Definitely Hillsborough....and I've searched every bit of news footage I can as well. (It drives me mad that I can't find it). The wall at Heysel was a relatively low wall in comparison...the one I'm talking about at Hillsborough was a massive brick boundary wall to prevent people getting into the stadium without going through turnstiles, etc. I can't explain why the footage on that particular wall, on that day, can't be found. If I can find it, on any site, I'll post it here! ATB
I can’t find the words to say 😪. I respect Liverpool fans / relatives for their tenacity fighting for the truth. RIP 96 ❤️💔

If I perverted the course of justice I'd be in prison, why the fuck has duckenfield or any police not been convicted of mass manslaughter,29 years and no justice, and why has no-one ever been convicted of killing 54 Bradford & 2 Lincoln fans in 1985-seems Bradford has been forgotten about, football fans have always been tret like shit-the very least they can do is make sure they're safe R.I.P to anyone who's ever not returned home from a football match-love Halifax Town supporter x
@Tash Warden Hii,in 1985 a fire started in Bradford Citys main Stand at Valley Parade stadium killing 54 Bradford fans and 2 Lincoln fans,Bradford won promotion that season and it was the final day, meant to be day of celebration with a big crowd, until just before halftime when the fire was spotted, and destroyed the stand within minutes 😭
I think any of us would be sentenced to prison for an uncomfortable length of time if we committed perjury. This is truly shocking.
So they got crushed against a fence? What a sad way to die 🙁
Adrian Sanchez Crished against the fence, crushed against each other so they can’t breathe as there is no room for your lungs to expand and lots suffocated. It is a horrible way to die.
Harry Hutchison why did you have to add to it... now it is a much much more horrible way to die... I would’ve been fine with just the fence.... but yes horrible ways...

I just can’t understand how grown adults could allow this to happen . As a human being you have some responsibility
There's a number of documentaries about this and many other type incidents similar to this and the problem is people from the back keep pushing forward and don't know that people in the front are getting crushed .
A lot of times that happens because of lack of proper security and police as well as nowhere for the people to come out to escape ... simply trapped what can they do ... the people in the front who are getting crushed and trapped can't get the people in the back to stop coming through ... it's a crowd control problem that almost always could have been avoided

What an appalling day that was for football and sport, Liverpool supporters only went to watch a game of football and were full of excitement as the result determines who goes to Wembley for that prestigious cup.
It was purely down to the failure of control by the police that caused that, it’s as black and white as it could be.
Fast forward to 2022. Liverpool fans were subdued to more problems at the champions league final and was again from appalling police control or lack of it! Then they ended up being blamed again! The evidence is all on camera of being gassed by the Parisian police, unprovoked! Plus all the other stuff like mugging by locals and blamed for ticket forgery etc.
I make this comment in October 2022, that game was back in May and the Parisian authorities are still denying any wrong doing by themselves.
It disgusts me as a non Liverpool fan but a Hull City fan there are still problems like that fateful day in 1989. I was only 4 at the time so have no recollection, but read an awful lot into it and only to find something similar happen this very year.
It certainly wouldn’t happen in UK, the authorities have learnt their lessons (I like to think) but was still in a modern European country that are also very big on football. But I have to point out, the Parisian police are a police force of the same country that have a military unit who recruit criminals from most other countries around the world.
I know, you would think Liverpool fans had never been responsible for the deaths of fans due to hooliganism.
6:47 hearts or lungs?
Lungs. They couldnt breath to get oxygen. As a result they went into cardiac arrest.
What is most bizarre is that when a B&E is on Scousers have little issue climbing fences then
How many are accountable?
At what point do people stop trying to force their way in?
Connor Torres that's not how crowd crush occurs. People in the back have no idea that there is a problem with people in the front. They are just subtly moving forward, like you would boarding a bus, or waiting to enter a movie theater, not realizing that far ahead, people are dying. Crowds virtually liquify at a certain point and create waves like a tsunami, much more powerful in the front than in the back. If you are out at Sea, you would not even know a tsunami was passing under you whereas it devastates the shore. People in the back are like the people out at sea. It's horrifying!
No one forced a way in. Stadium Security cameras show Police actively herding fans into already full pens. The same cameras disproved the late arrivals forcing a way in lie too. Its fully documented. As are the(leaked) edited Police statements (suggested edits can be clearly seen in the margins) shown in the Press a few years back.
@@Dovietail Very well explained

@6:40 explains. They died of asphyxiation as their bodies were compressed and crushed. They couldn't get oxygen so their bodies went into cardiac arrest.

What was the supporters thinking charging in there like that! Why didn’t they leave?
I kind of wonder do any English football fans miss free standing stadiums
i just don’t even get it. if people started pushing me and it got too crowded id move another direction. people were just standing too close and got crushed? or they broke something and it fell on others? so confused.
be been in crowds and the crowd just keep moving like idk how it would crush people
i'm sure they tried that trust me. there's just no way out once you're in especially if you're in the middle.
in situations like these you won’t be able to move at ALL, not even your hands. you can only really move towards wherever the crowd as a whole is moving, and if there’s nowhere to go, well, the crush just becomes more condensed. people are pressing against you so tightly even your chest won’t have enough space to expand so breathing becomes very hard and eventually completely impossible. people die in crushes like these by asphyxiation, sometimes even with broken ribs
also a big issue is that people at the back of a crowd have no idea just how tightly packed the center or front of the crush is. so people at the back might tend to push forward, which in these cases sends a type of shockwave through the crowd, forcing the people in the worst spots even closer together
when your in a crowd crush you cant control where you go, i have been in a similar situation and its a horrible feeling
My dad died there , i was 8 :(

How about you talk about heysel
We should e able to trust the police to keep us safe and be truthful. The fact they blamed this on the fans is disgusting. I haven’t seen any footage of hooligans. 96 innocent people were denied justice for far too long due to police dishonesty.
Everyone is to blame apart from the fans.
How did they even die
They were crushed
6:43
Abby Humans were crushing everyone, it was too crowded and heavy
It’s called a human crush.... kinda obvious how they died.
Abby human crush A human disaster which occurs during religious pilgrimages or professional sporting and music events, when crowds fall prey to mass panic due to an explosion, fire or other trigger event which causes a stampede. Death is caused by compressive asphyxiaton (crowd crush) rather than trampling, resulting from the combination of horizontal pushing and vertical stacking often against a closed exit or route of egress.

Liverpool at it... again....
Everyone blaming the coppers and not the thousands of stem lickers that created the crush.
It takes one to know one.
Liverpool fans who didn’t have tickets were to blame.
Except all of that was proven to be a lie lol.
You’ve fallen for the blatant lie put out by the one truly responsible and fully to blame. The police. They put that out to try and cover their asses. They failed. Investigators did the frame by frame counting. All accounted for had a ticket. Nor where the spectators drunk or disorderly, well under 10% of the dead were intoxicated.
Poor grounds architectural planning and an ill-equipped negligent police force caused those deaths.
No, it’s clear to see that there are far too many Liverpool fans outside of the ground. What I find amazing is that it always seems to happen to Liverpool.
Nick Reeves “The inquests heard the 10,100 fans *with standing tickets* for the Leppings Lane end were expected to enter through just seven turnstiles, causing congestion outside the ground.” You know what 10,000 people going through ONLY seven turnstiles looks like? “Far too many Fans on the outside” Duh. Those rightly ticked individuals went straight down into what they thought was the only way, the opening to Pens 2/3. They were never guided anywhere else.
So I reiterate, poor architectural planning and a highly negligent police force was to Blame. The truth may have taken more than 20 plus years to come to light but that doesn’t mean it’s out there. Do read or watch a bit more on this before rushing to inaccurate judgement.

I know I can't believe they were trying to get in instead of backing up!! I wasn't about at the time but watched lots about and can see that the fans caused it by charging in! And the men with there sons are monsters! For a fact I no if I was there with my son I would of left as soon as it was obvious that when they opened the gates everyone would charge in
Was wondering how this could be police’s fault. This makes it clear, this was just government’s fault. This is what happens when you ask government to do what should be handled by a private company. Police should be overseeing safety IF they are present at all, seeing as how there should be private security to do that.
And I still think the audience was partially to blame. What could be going through people’s heads to charge through a gate in a crowd like that is beyond me! Have some self-awareness! Look around you-do you feel like a cow headed to slaughter?
Shame on you!
No gates opened, no crush.
