Hello! I am a professional dog groomer, specializing in poodles. Being a dog groomer can be very stressful, and puppies do need to learn they have to be obedient, but for learning puppies I would recommend more praise and a little less discipline. You want the puppy to feel like what your doing is normal, not awful.

First grooming a should be a positive experience. Groomers are on the clock and don't have time to do that. However, I think she should of given some treats and happy praises. Everything is quick, quick.

My groomers are extremely patient with my dogs! If I ever saw them treat them this way we’d leave immediately 🤦🏼‍♀️

For puppies, I use a much smaller clipper, battery operated- it's less scary b/c it doesn't make so much noise, plus the cord doesn't get in the way and frighten the dogs even further. Does that make sense?

My poodle puppy freaked out with the quiet clippers. So I held the back of the clippers close to her head while on, and let her smell them and see it's no big deal and praised her. Then ran the handle of the clippers, along her back showing her it's no big deal. Then slowly clipped sections of her. She freaked a bit, but got a treat & kisses after I clipped her back. Then clipped other areas and a treat & praise & kisses. Those treats worked wonders! Not treats she normally gets. Was just my other dogs dog food. I still have to work on holding still with her face, but what an improvement in 1 clipping. She was motivated to hold still at least for her body. I've been working on touching toes, in ears, eyes & brushing daily with lots of kisses & hugs. Those treats made her hold still. I didnt have a grooming station so I just held her in my lap. But no more freaking out. I also washed her eye/ tears with a warm microfiber, very softly. She enjoyed that. She kept coming back wanting more for the next treat!

She is being rough considering the dog is very small and holding the water sprayer so close to her body is not a good idea either. I know they are on the clock and they need to make their money, however, they need to be considered of the dog's body sizes - smaller the dog the gentler you'll need to be with their skin and their joints!! She was complaining that the dog was trying to bite her - I never noticed that the dog was trying to bite her. She's throwing herself all around - or are you throwing the dog all around?? Which one is it?

Not taking the time to start training a puppy that will need grooming it’s entire life right from birth is an injustice not just to the dog but to the person that grooms it as well. I touch face, feet, tummies, and rears from day one, start combing & brushing with a soft baby brush as soon as eyes open, and start clipper work as soon as a puppy can stand. I have English Setters which means ears, neck, and feet clippering and a lot of hand stripping on the body with scissor work. I commend you for caring more about this youngsters experience than trying to make this a perfect groom the first time. With the owners doing your suggested homework hopefully this puppy will learn to enjoy being groomed. Biting at 12 weeks is scary!

How painful to watch. A small dog like this doesn’t need a pet trim until she is a year old. I groomed my bichon frisée myself until she was one year old. She loved the grooming every time and the groomer for 5 years was loving and played with her for an hour prior to washing and grooming and established a good relationship. The whole process took 3 hours and my dog was treated like her pet and not a customer. My dog was stable and didn’t move throughout the 3 hours as I sat and watched. This one is rushing to get the job done and busy doing an advertisement. I would never take my dog there even for free, obviously she is not a dog loving person and a poor job. I do a better job than her!

Shirley Chu Shirley Chu I think we watched different videos. Dede was very clear that she usually does an introduction and that, in this case, the circumstances were such that she couldn’t do that.
I’m not a groomer and I assume you aren’t a trained groomer either but you seem to profess to know more than a trained groomer about how, what and when is best to groom a dog? Your dog was one years old at its first grooming session- this dog wasn’t even 12 weeks old, they aren’t even comparable situations?
I honestly don’t understand people like you who feel the need to comment about how ‘wrong’ you think someone is doing something but then have nothing constructive to add? These type of comments always make sure to say how ‘right’ they do things though- must make sure to give yourself a good ol’ pat on the back! It just generally makes for a pompous and arrogant comment. That’s just my opinion though and I’m not always right.
Dede- Really enjoy your videos, keep them coming 😊

I’m not digging the rushing and discipline to the puppy. If you took your time and talked to the puppy in a lighter tone, maybe he/she would be more co-operative. And why the hell are you pulling hair out of that puppy’s ears!!?? If you can’t afford ear powder you don’t need to groom! You would never groom my babies.

Let me pluck your ear hair without ear powder. Please cover the dogs nose when bathing. Groomers have drowned dogs this way and killed them!!!! Happened here in town at one of the big franchises too. I don't understand why this important stuff isn't taught. What is going on in this industry nowadays? In a rush to get the dogs done or actually not taught the dangers of grooming? I think I need to start a meeting/petition for all of this stuff. So much going on.

I have a Bichpoo that's just like her. We've been brushing and combing her since we got her at 10 weeks. I used rounded point scissors on her face when she use to nap. It's a slow, patient process. Exposing her to the sights, smells, and sounds of clippers, scissors, combs, and brushes. She still is hyper at 6 months, but she tolerates better. I'll use clippers one day, trim feet and legs one day, then one day on her head and finishing scissoring. I used to clip show horses and they can severely injure you. Jamming all grooming in an hour on skittish animal has to be frustrating to all parties. I applaud you.

I just finished reading some comments posted by others. Some people seem to think the groomer is rough. Others think she is agressive. Some compare her technique to the technique of their own dog groomers (may i add, some of you have never even seen your dog actually being groomed. You drop him off, pick him up when hes done). A few comments kind of hinted the groomer was a bit on the abusive side. To those of you who feel this way, I think you are wrong. I think you are hsrshly criticizing the groomer. She is straight up. She isn't putting on a phony mask for the viewers. That being said, she is not abusive and she does what she feels is best for the dog. Clearly she does not want to stress the dog out more then she is. She has a lot of experience and has dogs of her own. I would stop and think twice before making her seem like an abusive or aggressive groomer . I dont take animal abuse lightly. No one should. This groomer is not abusive whatsoever. She may not be the "awe puppy is so cute im just going to let you bite me and allow you to run crazy cus u r so cute" type of groomer but that does not make her a bad, mean or abusive groomer. She is a great groomer and I would take my dog to her for grooming if i lived in Texas. It is obvious she cares about dogs and that she wants the best outcome possible. If you all were as quick to call out the real animal abusers out there as quick as you harshly criticized this groomer, the world would have a few less animal abusers to worry about. Thats my 2 cents, do with it what you want.

It's a puppy and yes it is scared, but it needs to know that biting is not the correct response to being afraid. If you allow a dog to bite as a puppy it will bite as an adult. I don't mean the nibbling that they do when they're playing, that helps teach them bite pressure so they know how to play gently and take treats from a hand gently. Fear biting or aggression is unacceptable though.

This little pup will learn how to be groomed. My daughter couldn't groom her shih Tzu and so let it get matted 😠 I scolded my daughter because she knows better since she was raised with them. Laziness and negligence are my pet peeves so she had to help me with the grooming. Her dog was bucking and screaming, just didn't want to be touched. We tried treats and even carried her up in the air and finally that helped.

My toy poodle was blacklisted from most major franchises for grooming. She bit her first groomer at 6 months old...and had to have a soft muzzle for every groom until I lost her at age 13! Some dogs just do NOT LIKE IT!. The last 4 years she went to the same place and I paid extra for them to take more time and it helped, as she was a senior dog and still feisty. RIP PUP. I miss my BRAT. She never changed. This groomer did a GREAT job making the dog look nice and clean without hurting her...and used tools that would not hurt if she jumped. Give her a BREAK! Like I said ...the franchises would not even make me an appt! Then where do you go with an unruly dog? They need groomed. She was the best dog ever...snif...except for grooming..

Thank you! I learned some lessons about how to handle haters in some few months and now, I could care less now. However, as internet haters begin to expand laws are changing and I hope they start paying attention to what they say before they say. It could bite them in the butt later.

This is why a I will not be taking my toy poodle to the groomer. It is stressing this puppy out. Every day I sit my puppy on my lap and do a little grooming. Each of our pets has one or two little jobs done each day. It is part of our loving care.

My poodle pup was exactly like this baby on her first groom. She's great now. I struggled. I groom my own. This groomer is doing great! I now have some very young rescue poodles, 5.5 weeks old and I'm clipping their rears and letting them feel the clipper vibration. Makes a huge difference. People getting dogs requiring regular grooming like this should read on what to do to get them ready. I will definitely tell new families to keep up clippers/brushing. It's a lifetime for them or they get matted. Even in those ears!

Hahahaha nothing makes me laugh more then puppies moving their body in all weird positions and standing up funky because they are so light 😂 I have a 13 yr poodle and I feel so bad for not knowing I should have familiarized him with grooming but definitely will for my next one

Since David was there, would it have been helpful to have him (a second person) hold the pup while you groomed? I know it won't always be possible on a groom, but, when starting a dog out for first groom, esp a puppy, seems like that would help with intro groom. And yes! Owners need to learn to do their part!!!

Honestly, I would have called the parents and told them you can't groom her until she has the pup trained in grooming. also, the dog is not familiar with the groomer and therefore will be anxious. I commend the groomer for trying but some parent will see this video with the groomer as being too aggressive.

why do people get these dogs with coats that need extra care by the owner inbetween groomings and they do nothing. then when its time for a grooming the dog is scared and all the new noises of the clippers and hair dryer and new surroundings and the poor dog is totally traumatized. of course its going to try and bite, its the dogs defense, its scare and doesnt understand whats happening. cant blame the poor thing for that, its a puppy. im a hairdresser and u should try getting a child in your chair for its first haircut. i get the same reaction as this puppy..lol instead of biting i get smacked a lot. its takes a lot of patiences whether its a child or a puppy. your tone has to be firm but not scary and a lot of praise and good girl/boy after and a nice cuddle after. im exhausted after a crying scared child. i can just imagine after a scared puppy..lol

So true. Next door to my salon is a barber shop. Where they do many children hair cuts and I hear screaming through the walls daily. It's the TRUTH!

I feel so bad . My baby is 8 months & never been to the groomers or had a haircut. I do all of his “grooming” at home minus haircuts. But I’m thinking about attempting after watching some videos on how to properly do it.
