My dad was born in the Appalachian mountains so I spent a lot of time in the hills growing up. If you have ever been up in the hills, those people have no internet, one party store, no police, no street lights, dense fog every morning and night, and just an infinite amount of stars in the sky. My family that's still there all live in small shacks like this film. I think that's why this movie always struck a great chord with me. It was terrifying because my relatives there would tell me stories of unexplained phenomena. Giant shadowy figures chasing cars and such. The mountain lore is enough to send a chill down your spine. I'm a skeptic, but they weren't lying, they saw some strange things. Whether I believe it or not, they certainly believe their eyes. If you're in the right mood and setting, this film is frightening. I always loved the creature design too.
+Aaron Kalat The fact that there could be a lot of things going on in those mountains that have not been fully explained and have not been documented, and that there is no where to go easily and quickly for help if you find yourself facing something evil, is the fear that this movie feeds off of, and is a large part of why it works so well.
What f'ed me up more than anything about this movie was where Harley is driving back from the witch's house with his son's body, when all of a sudden the boy pops up and says, "What'd you do, Daddy?" Of course, it's all in Harley's head, but that was one hell of a moment.
+gspendlove Lance Henrikson [Harley] has said in interviews that the moment you just described, is the thing in the first draft of the script he was offered, that made him agree to do the movie......
I think the reason this gets mixed reviews is partly because the creature looks kinda similar in some ways too the creatures from those "Alien" films, which Winston also worked on, but also because it's just another one of your 80s "teens in peril" film. I really enjoyed it up until the kids on their dirt bokes showed up, then it just seemed to go downhill. Still, this was way better than "Jeepers Creepers" which totally ripped this off.
I've seen lots of horror movies, but this one seems to stick in my head more than most. What made it different from so many other "monster on the loose" movies out there is the wonderfully creepy way it incorporated Appalachian culture into its narrative. It showed Appalachia as a different and unique society from the rest of America, that even had its own traditions of the paranormal.
zooeyhall I love it when horror films do that. Kinda like how Maniac Cop incorporated New York City into its formula and Candyman incorporated the hood. It really adds to the character. One of the things that helps make Freddy scary is that he's a small-town suburban nightmare.
One of my favorite movie monsters. Totally. Pumpkinhead had so much personality, despite not speaking a word. It wasn't just some evil monster, but they really made it believable.
That old woman scared the living hell out of me as a kid. This movie I will be watching the day before Halloween to set the mood for Halloween night. Since I won't have time to watch it on Halloween, going to be out with friends. Anyways, great classic movie.
My cousin and my uncle made me watch this when I was 5 years old. It scared the literal crap out of me I wouldn’t even go in the house by myself without turning all the lights on. Whenever I’d go to the bathroom my cousin would say, “Pumpkinhead’s in there.” I’d scream and run outside and pee behind a tree. My grandma wasnt amused but my cousin dad and uncle thought it was hilarious.
I first saw this on my 6th or 7th birthday... I picked it out at the video store because of the title (obviously didn't look at the cover). At my party we were expecting a kids movie and what we ended up with was a scary movie that i can't believe our parents let us watch. We all had nightmares for 2 weeks after, lol. Definitely one of my favorite horror films.
The mark of the perfect scary movie, something that scares you shitless as a kid, maybe a teen when your in the dark, puppetmaster, pumpkinhead, IT, to name a few. will stand the test of time.
It did have a score, not much but I clearly remember the haunting music as it pans through the forest at the end. Great horror flick. One of the most atmospheric and original creatures. Great FX throughout
Oh and whoever that old lady was, she was freakin brilliant! Every scene with her was gold! I can't say this movie scared me cause with these types of movies you know they aren't real and their easy to watch. But that doesn't mean this is bad in any way. I had alot of fun watching it.
The Great Pumpkin has arisen. Only this Halloween, he's not giving out toys to the kiddies. So, Linus, bring your blanket. You'll need all the "security" you can get!!! PUMPKINHEAD! Scary enough to make Charlie.....brown!!!
I liked the movie myself, the concept was pretty interesting. I think the reason it gets mixed reviews is a combination of the production values and that some people see it as more cheesy than scary. Personally I rather like it.
i thought this was more sad than scary but then again ive watched horror movies since i was 10 months old. my first movie as a baby was an interview with a vampire. i felt sorry for the pumpkin head
If they ever made a remake just keep it all the same. Except have the prosthetic and cgi with the monster more scary when you see him and when he kills. other than that keep it all the same. It is very under rated probably because of that. Also like the situations that that take place in the movie are timeless because they are very realistic.
what i liked about this movie was the original idea that his vengence for his son when he made the deal with the devil a.k.a. pumpkinhead lance herkinsons character had to endure the pain of the people he wanted revenge on you don't see original idea's like this in movies today
Show some respect! This is Stan Winston's film, you know the man who made the Dinosaurs for Jurassic Park, the Alien Queen in Aliens, the Terminator in the Terminator franchise. This by the way is a great film for a first time director, I have the special addition of the movie and it's amazing! Go and grab it, it has a whole bunch of things about Stan before he passed.
"Keep away from Pumpkinhead, Unless you're tired of living, His enemies are mostly dead, He's mean and unforgiving, Bolted doors and windows barred, Guard dogs prowling in the yard, Won't protect you in your bed, Nothing will, from Pumpkinhead."
Oh geez people the reason why they call it Pumpkin head is because the demon hatches from a pumokin. When Ed dies at the end the witch buries him in the sacared pumpkin patch and the cycle continues. Loved this movie as a kid and check out Blossom as one of the hick kids.
Any idea what the kids are singing in the background? All I can make out is "Pumpkinhead, Pumpkinhead, better watch out or you'll be dead." Is there another line?
@Scarytail I heard the sequels are not as good as the original. Is that true? I just want to know in advance. =) And thank you for the comment on my video by the way =)
Hahaha, my dad and I use to watch this movie together--it was one of his favorites. Funnily enough, he called me "Pumpkinhead" when I was little, before I knew one of his favorite movies was about this demon thing by the same name...I wonder what he was trying to say? :-P
i know exactly what you mean, movies now use gore to scare you, look at the origional Halloween there was almost no gore,it left it to your imagination to picture what it looked like and thats what made older movies better
tude618 They seem way too much of "copycats" with "found footage" and just ghostly shit and all that. Many of the older ones tried to be more original. Each of the horror icons had more character. You can't have character with invisible forces like you could with say- Freddy, Jason, Pumpkinhead, Candyman, Maniac Cop, etc. Basically the old horror films had more passion and heart behind them.
LOVED this movie. Saw it when I was younger and it is one of the reasons I love horror movies. The main actor was amazing! The monster is Awesome. It looks like a distant cousin to ALIEN. HA! One of the most under-rated cult classics I know of! I hope they never remake this-Pumpkinhead doesn't need to be touched!
See I liked it. I mean I thought it moved a little fast once Pumpkinhead came to life and I don't know why he dragged that one guy to the house instead of just killing him. The killls could have been a little bit better too. However I loved where this movie went. The story was simple, yet it's just what I love to watch. Stupid kids messing around then getting killed by some lasher or monster. And I loved how it looked. Tom Woodruff Jr does a good job playing and designing these creatures.
I think pumpkin head as a monster is overrated, he was scary as he'll for his day but he doesn't weigh up to other monster villains like the creeper IMO. Still a great movie none the less.
My dad was born in the Appalachian mountains so I spent a lot of time in the hills growing up. ALIEN GAMNG 44 On the East of the USA. Going from Canada to Alabama
ALIEN GAMNG 44 Small village called Dungannon (spelling might be off). It's in the mountains of Virginia.
fox head 14 Whenever you do, you've got to catch one of these dawns. It's unlike any other place I've ever seen.
+Aaron Kalat The fact that there could be a lot of things going on in those mountains that have not been fully explained and have not been documented, and that there is no where to go easily and quickly for help if you find yourself facing something evil, is the fear that this movie feeds off of, and is a large part of why it works so well.
I grew up in North Carolina. I think the Appalachians are my favorite mountains.
This movie is sinfully underrated.
better than today movies
hell yeah
Pumpkinhead and the Creeper are the 2 scariest monsters IMO
The set design, and director of photography are geniuses! You are right, the atmosphere is fantastic!
What f'ed me up more than anything about this movie was where Harley is driving back from the witch's house with his son's body, when all of a sudden the boy pops up and says, "What'd you do, Daddy?" Of course, it's all in Harley's head, but that was one hell of a moment.
gspendlove THAT.....is how you do a jump-scare.

One of the things that helps make Freddy scary is that he's a small-town suburban nightmare.
One of my fav horror movies. This movie is a gem amongst horror movies
Actually a really good movie :3 Saw it when I was 5 or 6, and I was traumatized for weeks...
One of my favorite horror films ever.
One of my favorite movie monsters. Totally. Pumpkinhead had so much personality, despite not speaking a word. It wasn't just some evil monster, but they really made it believable.
The best one!
RIP Stan Winston. You scared the crap out of me with this creature.
That old woman scared the living hell out of me as a kid. This movie I will be watching the day before Halloween to set the mood for Halloween night. Since I won't have time to watch it on Halloween, going to be out with friends. Anyways, great classic movie.
I just piked up a copy of Pumpkinhead signed by Lance Henriksen. What a great actor he is....one of my favs. Cool trailer!!
this is an awesome film. great atmosphere. I love how they also explained the legend of pumpkinheads existance.
Winston is a frickin legend! He also worked on the Terminator movies, as well as many, many others.
Saw this movie fresh on VHS tape back when it was still new. Awesome movie.
The mark of the perfect scary movie, something that scares you shitless as a kid, maybe a teen when your in the dark, puppetmaster, pumpkinhead, IT, to name a few. will stand the test of time.
I remember as a little boy seeing the trailer for this film on tv announcing its release on VHS along with Childs play
It did have a score, not much but I clearly remember the haunting music as it pans through the forest at the end.
Great horror flick. One of the most atmospheric and original creatures. Great FX throughout
'this' channel brought me here, just finish watching. Good movie.
I agree, this was directed by the late great Stan Winston, RIP Stan!!! You were and always will be the best!!!!!!
Thank you Spoony for introducing me to this gem.
Oh and whoever that old lady was, she was freakin brilliant! Every scene with her was gold! I can't say this movie scared me cause with these types of movies you know they aren't real and their easy to watch. But that doesn't mean this is bad in any way. I had alot of fun watching it.
This and the creeper are probably the best modern monsters that fit monster movies.
Ah, there is nothing better than a good family comedy such as this :)
If this hasn't already been mentioned, the music in this trailer was taken from the movie Silver Bullet.
I'm a huge fan of this film, I love the pumpkinhead design, he looks really scary as hell, i also have the mcfarlane figure they made of it.
the first scene of the movie was great
The Great Pumpkin has arisen.
This gonna be release on DVD 20th anniversary edition on September 11th, with new transfer, widescreen, and extras
still one of my all time favorite horror movie series
Stan Winston directed this. I wish he had done more movies, because I think this is an 80's classic.
I remember watching this movie when I was small back in the 90s, its a classic horror film!!!
One of the best ever made.
i love these old trailers they are better than the new ones
truly a classic!
Well thanks for that. I will buy this when it comes out next month WIDE SCREEN :)
One of the best special effects horror creatures...
I love this movie, a modern day remake would be cool, and two spin-offs against Freddy and Jason would be real badass.
This movie played like a scary Twilight Zone episode. It creeped on your nerves. When the hag said,"GOD dammed me long ago!" You knew she meant it.
R.I.P. Florence Schauffler (Haggis) November 22, 1920 - December 24, 2017
It's an absolutely fantastic horror movie, anyone who doesn't think so knows very little about what makes a movie great.
This movie is great,
effects are great,
and atmosphere in whole movie also !
i thought this was more sad than scary but then again ive watched horror movies since i was 10 months old. my first movie as a baby was an interview with a vampire. i felt sorry for the pumpkin head

They made a remake of leprechaun and it is called leprechaun origins but looks more like this so go chek it out if you haven't
therage198911 a remake is in the works now
Theres a lot of plotlines that could be used, only underlying themes needed is punishment and darkness .
this movie scarred me as a child. i had nightmares for years
what i liked about this movie was the original idea that his vengence for his son when he made the deal with the devil a.k.a. pumpkinhead lance herkinsons character had to endure the pain of the people he wanted revenge on you don't see original idea's like this in movies today
But would you compare this to Pet Sematary?
Mr Peabody good point. I totally agree. This movie is in my opion very scary and fun to watch. I would like to see more like this.
Go and grab it, it has a whole bunch of things about Stan before he passed.
has anyone else noticed that pumpkinhead is quite similar in construct and some details to the alien rig?
This is a good scare movie and the acting and make-up is perfect!
"Keep away from Pumpkinhead,
Unless you're tired of living,
His enemies are mostly dead,
He's mean and unforgiving,
Bolted doors and windows barred,
Guard dogs prowling in the yard,
Won't protect you in your bed,
Nothing will, from Pumpkinhead."
I'm not really a big fan of horror films in general, but Pumpkin Head is by far my favorite.
This movie was the only movie that truly scared me. I know it comes off like cheesy 80's shlock but this one actually did it.
Being Born and raised in Detroit this scared me during Halloween...cause its dark and it always rain on that day.
Cracking horror film from Stan Winston with a solid performance from Lance Hendrickson.
"God damn you, God damn you!"
"He already has, son. He already has."
Funny thing about this movie...both teenage Superman and Todd Gack are in it.
Oh geez people the reason why they call it Pumpkin head is because the demon hatches from a pumokin. When Ed dies at the end the witch buries him in the sacared pumpkin patch and the cycle continues. Loved this movie as a kid and check out Blossom as one of the hick kids.
Just realized how similar Pumpkin Head and the Xenomorph are
Now son, don't go scarin' the yankees on account of that old boy. He don't mean no harm unless you done gone sling blade on somebody...what have you.
these movies were and always wil be the best
Pumkinhead was on a mission.
I don't understand why Netflix doesn't have this on demand.
Charles Aidman has a great voice in trailers
@Flashlight1996 It was made by Stan Winston the same sfx guy from aliens, predator and terminator.
my dad, brother and sis love this muvie! we watch it on Monsters HD ch. 777! The first time i saw it i was crying because that little boy died!
Ohh cammon... He wanted him to catch his hand for sure... 1:00 LOL!
can i see this movie on the internet?
i tried to buy it but they don't sell it in any video store in holland :(
Any idea what the kids are singing in the background? All I can make out is "Pumpkinhead, Pumpkinhead, better watch out or you'll be dead." Is there another line?
I love B grade movies and this was class A.
Best horror flick next to "The Thing" 1952 versiion
pumpkinhead, pumpkinhead, you better watch out or you`ll be dead
@Scarytail
I heard the sequels are not as good as the original. Is that true? I just want to know in advance. =)
And thank you for the comment on my video by the way =)
Hahaha, my dad and I use to watch this movie together--it was one of his favorites.

:-P
Same
@storm1580 im saying the song is form nightmare on elm street they just took the idea form it
This scared me as a kid because i lived near the appalachian mountains
@Scarytail what?if your asking why i putted misfits, the misfits band has make a song about pumpkin head
i know exactly what you mean, movies now use gore to scare you, look at the origional Halloween there was almost no gore,it left it to your imagination to picture what it looked like and thats what made older movies better
love this movie, definitely has one of the creepiest atmospheres to it.
Pumpkinhead vs Rawhead Rex. Who wins ?
boondox made a song based on the same poem this movie is based on (an he did a pretty good job- quite a tribute)
Both Pumpkinhead and the Aliens were worked on by Stan Winston. God rest his soul.
@Hells666singer I'll agree with you they reveal creeper too fast. and he looks a bit too human.
Today horror movies sucks mostly about the same thing with ghosts house with a family living inside more 80s and 90s movies are way better
Old school horror movies had balls man. I mean it was the era of gore and splatter movies.
tude618 They seem way too much of "copycats" with "found footage" and just ghostly shit and all that.
Many of the older ones tried to be more original. Each of the horror icons had more character. You can't have character with invisible forces like you could with say- Freddy, Jason, Pumpkinhead, Candyman, Maniac Cop, etc.
Basically the old horror films had more passion and heart behind them.
I actually prefer the ghost/supernaturaland slow burn horror movies to your typical generic slasher or monster horror movies.
One of my favorites
@TheWhatdoesthatmean The movie explains that. The demon was supposedly "born" in a pumpkin field.
Thanks Dan
Is this really good? I want to buy it but I usually dont like horror movies with aliens in them..
Still looking for a good copy. Suggestions anyone?
They have the movie out on dvd now. Had mine for the past couple years now.
Heaps good how he says Pumpkin head at the end
LOVED this movie. Saw it when I was younger and it is one of the reasons I love horror movies. The main actor was amazing! The monster is Awesome. It looks like a distant cousin to ALIEN. HA! One of the most under-rated cult classics I know of! I hope they never remake this-Pumpkinhead doesn't need to be touched!
OneJenna sadly they are, twisted pictures th company behind the saw films and dead silence are working on a reboot now as we speak
The remake is in developmental hell.
I love this movie. I like how the guy gives the evil look after they hit his son.
I agree with you Polden Gond, it´s a great great horror movie.
How does the Pumpkinhead rhyme go again?
I think pumpkin head as a monster is overrated, he was scary as he'll for his day but he doesn't weigh up to other monster villains like the creeper IMO. Still a great movie none the less.
