Truth! Most of why I don't like Jasper is because her story is so unfulfilling. All we know of her past is that she was a bigshot on Homeworld and she was loyal to Pink Diamond, but aside from that there's no sense to her real character or personality besides being a power-mad bully, so why am I supposed to care if she gets shattered or not? We got to see Peridot grow and change from a Saturday morning cartoon-style villain to a healthy individual, and that's why we love Peri! Even when Malachite was around, that arc was mostly centered on Lapis and her redemption/recovery. Jasper begged to fuse again but it would've been nice to fully understand why she wanted to fuse so badly. The Crewniverse easily could've done an episode where Steven accidentally intrudes in Jasper's mind so the audience could understand her better.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 they don't give Jasper any development and have Steven go completely against his caring nature when he's talking to her because otherwise, you'd actually care if she got hurt. Just turned her into a one-note Vegeta rip off with absolutely no depth, They could have easily squash something in, but she's just easier to abuse as a punching bag.
@Notepad。txt but Jasper has to get beat up and apologize for everything!! Sugar said Malachite was mutual abuse, but she is really hammering in Lapis as the innocent victim and not acknowledging her horrible behavior at all. It's honestly kind of sickening how biased she is about it.
They had steven Kill Jasper, then bring her back, then leave her with no purpose or redemption. Jasper deserved a redemption a lot more than Lapis or the Diamonds, Jasper was abused and deceived and killed and corrupted and reformed and never had a proper send off
Omfg yes thank you. Jasper deserved so much better. I hate how they treated lapis like shes some sort of sweet and gentle goddess even though shes so much worse than jasper. Jasper is the only character in the show in which her severe mental issues just go unchecked and used for lapis and stevens charactet development. They even played on her suffering as a JOKE, which were her last lines ever said. The finale was shit by just that.
LEAVE LAPID ALOOONE but also you’re totally right Jasper deserved waaaayyu better. I hate how they left her with no purpose at all? Like an afterthought?? Ugh
Ran Kasai same and honestly I’d love to see her and Lapis getting on good terms despite what went on in the past or hell have her interact with the other characters I figured we’d see her and Amethyst interact
Yea ikr, if only Jasper could’ve possibly helped fight Corrupted Steven, then when everyone was all bubbly and sad, Jasper could’ve had at least some sort of redemption realizing all the bad things she’s done to Steven. That would’ve been great tbh
This is not a surprise. Steven universe has a consistent problem of rushing plot points, inconsistent & lacking world building, and leaving behind interesting storylines
@@malaxnmange5034 And that's what makes it bad. Think about it. Why would someone settle for an ok show when they can have a good show? Why settle for mediocrity when you can have something better?
If I remember correctly, didn't Rebecca Sugar herself said? "There are no one-off characters." "Well I'm gonna tell you right now, that's a complete f___ing lie." - AVGN
Lord Twinkie same with Bluebird, Mean Lapis ect And I thought they’d the era-3 rebellion route started by gems who hate the new changes Steven bought to Homeworld and want to kill him for it But nope we didn’t get any of that even though that could’ve gave past characters a time to shine
@@wook5676 I wouldn't count Bluebird as a single character since we know who it is made of but definitely the same for Nice and Mean Lapis, Mr. Smiley's friend, Mystery Girl named S (her being in the background in Sunshine Justice for one millisecond doesn't count) speaking of Sunshine Justice that's another one-off character. At least Holly Blue wasn't a one-off but Emerald definitely, Onion's Friends. Those other Rose Quartzes are one-off as well.
I dont think it's a literal corruption, even though they call it that. Steven's physical body reacts to his emotional state. Feels old? Becomes old. Feels like a monster? Becomes a monster. I think they just referred to it as corruption because it's similar
Yeah its definetly that. His powers were always related to his emotions and state of mind even back in season 1 ep 1 gem glow, it was his happiness that made his shield appear not the cookie cat, so I am my monster is basically Steven's power reacting to his state of mind as usual he felt like a fraud, A MONSTER so he became one
As a person that is dealing with anxiety and is followed by a therapist I found this ending pretty disappointing. I was really enjoying STF until the last three episodes, after that it felt like the authors said “frick it, we are done with this, let’s put a cliché ending with everybody hugging and a time skip of a few months where we mention that Steven is followed by a therapist and we are done”. I didn’t expect to have in this few episodes the Solution to all Steven’s problems but at least some possible points where to start his healing processes, or in other words, the issues that Steven must figure out, for example how to deal with his mother’s figure and the diamonds being part of his family even after all they did to him. The last episode dedicated to Pink’s past is “volleyball”, in that episode the only one that had finally figured out Pink is Pearl, Steven on the other hand had only another reason to hate his mother, about the Diamonds, Rebecca Sugar stated in an interview right after the finale, that Steven “in no point of the story has forgiven the diamonds” without adding nothing else after that. I’m not saying he should have, some trauma can’t be healed easily and forgiveness is not always possible, but at least a slight mention of the issue would had been appreciated. Moreover in the same interview Rebecca said that they choose not to show the healing process to give the characters some “privacy”, I’m ok with the idea of not showing everything on screen but privacy? Seriously? To a fictional character? We had just seen for about 10 episodes Steven’s every single problem, even in his dreams, and now, where the most important part starts, the part where we must find the strength to explain our problems to someone, is cut because a fictional character needs privacy? I highly respect the crewniverse and Rebecca Sugar, I really appreciate all the hard work they had done and I’m very grateful for that, but at the same time I can’t be happy with this ending, I feel that some characters didn’t have the rightful end for their story arc and the “privacy” thing just doesn’t make sense to me.
Yeah. The "respect Steven's privacy" part really bothers me, too. I mean come on, he's a fictional character, not a real person. There are so many differences between fictional story and reality. There are too many things and developments that happened off screen in this show, which made me feel like the crewniverse was just using the "privacy" as an excuse for their lazy writing. To me, the slow development is what makes a show enjoyable to watch. If you don't show the audience the complete process of an arc of a character or a story and just briefly metioned it after a long time skip instead, it just feel rushed, forced and unsatisfying to me. I used to like SU. But SUF really disappointed me, especially the ending.
The episodes should've been at least 20 min long so we could have more time to explore Steven's trauma and his road to recovery. It would allow other characters to get some screentime too. 11 min is way too short.
The "respect Steven's privacy" statement is interesting, because this was right after Sugar tweeted that SU wasn't going to continue as a comic. I know she's mentioned before about wanting to do something with SU again someday, but the way Future ended, and the privacy statement, make me feel like she's almost resentful. And I understand that she and the Crewniverse are a little burnt out by now, but those SU Dove commercials had better writing than Future.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 Sometimes I just can't tell what Rebecca and the crewniverse were thinking. I know they put a lot of effort into their work, but they didn't really have the best idea of story writing. Honestly, I find some fan works or fanfictions have way more interesting plots than the original series.
I’m really baffled by the direction of Future. Steven was put in this unique position in the original series in that his real *super power* was immense capacity for caring and empathy; something exceptionally unique for a male protagonist. This made the steady hints that lead to the Rose=Pink reveal more impactful to me in that she was a disastrous woman child who’s decisions had effects she could not have prepared herself for, but the Rose that was excited to give birth was a someone who seemingly put in the work to be a better person. Then the movie happened, and the direction shifted from “Steven’s power is giving second chances to everyone” to “No, actually his mom was a true monster after all and did die to leave her problems, everything is played 100% straight without the magic, and here’s an episode with a medically realistic PTSD diagnosis." Like. Holy shit, Rebecca. What made this drastic tonal shift happen? It’s like all the bad faith criticism got to the Crew and suddenly SU went from a plucky, magical show with gemstone aliens to making a 19 episode long mental breakdown and one funny episode about fusion tag with a rushed group hug at the end. Future left me with the feeling that most of what I enjoyed about the original series, it’s themes, and characters that inspired me were all a gross misinterpretation on my part.
the whole Rose thing really turned me off the show. They made her seem like such a bad person when she really wasnt. She was selfish and ignorant to people feeling but so were the diamonds, Rose at least had the decency to change for the better and stand up for what she believed in. Between Spinel and volleyBall they make her out to be this awful abusive character but none of what we see from supports that, she was the one being abused. Meanwhile instead of sticking to their guns and having the diamonds be these evil space tyrants they were set up to be, the just gloss over it all to make them more likable. They conquered dozens of worlds, Murdered millions if not billions of life forms in the process, shattered thousands of gems to then force them together which is the worst kind of hell, and emotionally and physically Pink by throwing her in a tower when she missed behaved, but hey they changed their ways now so its all good.
@@williamshenk8957 Apparently when Yellow Diamond was introduced, Rebecca hated how she was in that episode so afterwards she wrote the storyboards containing her aka like Human Zoo and the Trial. After that episode, Yellow became from an "evil" character into a "sad" redeemable character. Here I question, if she hated it that much... Did she tell the storyboarder what bothered her and what she wanted Yellow Diamond to be like? And how about that episode where Connie broke someone's hand because of muscular memory? Apparently Rebecca wanted it to be all about medication but HAD to write some conflict around it... That episode had a storyboarder from Trigger which is why the characters seem to be on model comoared to other episodrs, but the whole episode writing wise is really useless and stupid.
Mindy Horn it’s not you. I agree. It’s definitely them. This reminds me so much of GoT season 8. Rushed, out of character and inconsistent. They retroactively tried to incorporate Stevens many traumas and take a more realistic tone. The dissonance is that future is the _least_ realistic. Steven is _so_ out of character and everyone is conveniently written out of the story to exacerbate his isolation. *None* of this feels natural. The gems, Connie and Greg were _always_ there for him and even when they misunderstood gem/human aspects of what was going on with him, they did their best to connect with him and mostly succeeded. The crew did the *worst* you can do when writing an epilogue; they ungrounded a relatively balanced show (still with its many flaws) and instead of _seeding_ this revelation up to the finale, they wrote the *plot* around *Steven* and dumped all of his characterization into the ether to make this angsty animus. This character is _not_ Steven and this shift in the way he solves and handles his problems is so jarring that I did not care what happened to him. Why would we? _We don’t know this character._ All of his “trauma” was _clearly_ played for laughs and the crew thought *nothing* of it. Retconning it to suddenly be serious is just ridiculous. Perhaps if Steven universe was less self contained and episodic by nature it would be easier to digest, but with the show cramming everything into ten minute episodes that are largely unrelated (until the finale) it feels _rushed_ . Just like the season five finale, only the last few episodes are fluid. And also like the season five finale, major consequences and actions are resolved with a figurative group hug, but in this case *literal* . You *cannot* try to take something in media down a dark road and end with the most cliché _children’s_ resolution known to man. The disconnect is like whiplash. I felt like they simply used the comedic abuse as justification for Stevens more vitriolic diamond powers. You would think they would use his conflicting feelings on Rose (or white diamond???? Why did they ruin the diamonds smh but I digress) but they realized they had already done it to death and solved it multiple times throughout the series, to the point that in the movie he very *casually* understands that leaving spinel is *definitely* something his mother would do and understands that he is _not_ her. I don’t know why they would write him in such an unlikable way and completely ignore the multitude of sources that Steven has at his fingertips. A loving family, girlfriend, a city full of people who adore him, and the diamonds who have completely “changed for the better for him”. But in order to have him break down the crew need to take all of that from him, so they have him uncharacteristically push everyone away and promptly remove the people who would solve the issue from the plot. It almost feels like they made the _intro_ first and then wrote the story around it because almost *none* of it came to any impactful fruition. The other two lapis are irrelevant. Bluebird is irrelevant. Pink-white diamond is irrelevant, and Jasper is only used as an allegorical representation of Stevens comically homicidal tendencies and a catalyst to nurture and validate his tantrums (even though it’s clear that Steven would *NEVER* go to Jasper for any kind of advice, especially in a low place *AND* knowing her track record) and his conflict with Connie is forced and contrived because it requires Steven to suddenly lack his famed intuition and common sense. The crystal gems are largely absent and written strangely out of touch with Steven and Greg is removed every time he makes prepared with him. Don’t even get me started on that unexplained pink Godzilla bs. And yet they *still* find time for filler and needless slapstick, despite having retconned slapstick into violent trauma and abuse LOL I expected *so* much more from this finale and I feel like I received nothing. I felt completely apathetic outside of the fact that it saddened me to see something I have watched for so long go away. That feeling should be directed at the _story and characters and resolutions_ , not just losing something familiar. So many more interesting plot threads were left dangling and frayed and so much character development for other characters was tossed aside to focus on stripping Stevens away. We are simply expected to believe that all is solved after everyone cries and blames themselves and hugs him. This is the exact point they were countering because that’s all Steven was already doing. He was blaming himself and lamenting his perceived isolation and trauma on his own. It’s almost bemusing to watch. And the whole thing feels too little too late. We’ve had two times skips for these events to take place or to begin to manifest yet they choose to rush it in future, begging the question of _why hasn’t any of this come up before?_ Perhaps the crew was trying to make the show grow up. To cater to its _actual_ demographic of adults rather than children, but weren’t sure how to handle a vehicle for a more mature audience while still being confined to a children’s show platform. Whatever the case the actual resolution lazily happens off screen and I thought I’d missed an episode before the finale.
@@MillyKKitty Its like the show is struggling between being a lighthearted kids show and a really deep and heavy thriller with complex characters. I would have been ok with yellow being tragic and complicated but out right rewriting her after presenting her as this space tyrant ruins it. It would have worked if they hadnt set up the Gem rebellion, cluster and corruption parts of the show.
@@cieonssi441 that was very well put, you nailed almost every issue i had with the show. the only other problem i had with the show was the wasted potential after episodes like "The trial." They had this strange and alien world that they could have explored or written so much story in and around but did nothing with it. We never get to explore Homeworld or any of the other colonies, we never get to follow Lars on any adventures in space evading Emerald, they just show enough to emphasize drama with the diamonds and then they fix everything in a 2 year time skip. I have so many cool ideas for how a space arc could have gone and, with everything youve said on top of it, it only makes me sadder that they wasted so much potential.
The 11 minute episodes certainly hurt. The big issue for me was the past few episodes were flowing so damn well showing Steven turning away more and more people, it ends with his friends and family hugging him down and assuring they still care for him regardless of how he feels, fantastic. BUT, the time skip threw all that off. It felt like we missed an episode. Would have liked to see him talk to everyone more and recover, maybe show him just at least entering a therapist office, but it just gets a passing comment, and he's leaving. What?
Ikr! Steven leaving beach city was unnecessary. A better ending should be steven discussing his issues with his therapis and maybe give Jasper a purpose instead of throwing her in the dust. Let'snot forget that shattering a gem is something very extreme, once you do it you can't undo it, and even if they decided to bring back Japer, that incident should have some impact on her, like after reformation, one of her arm is missing or maybe she can no longer use her weapon.
I agree. People need to understand the ending doesn’t need to be action packed. Su is not about action but it is about love and compassion, so you can’t expect it to be action all the time. But I do wish they made SUF finale at least 22 mins for it to be more flushed out.
The therapy wasn’t shown on purpose. That’s something which Steven was suppose to go through in private without his Dad. Albeit, in an effort to help people come to terms with their own therapy I can see them coming up with a tutorial scene or something
@@UnknownCartoonEditor I know Sugar said that it was supposed to be private, but I still would have liked to see him actual enter the office but don't follow him in. We see almost every other response to mental health but that one and it just kinda sucked.
@@UnknownCartoonEditor Except this is a show that was supposed to connect to kids going through similar things. Basically, here are all your problems and the damage you cause with the answers off-screen. That is what was wrong. Even a montage of Steven feeling better and a glimpse of his therapist would have satisfied me. If your audience is kids, make it clear. If it is adults, FILL IN THE GAPS ADULTS WILL CATCH. You can't switch back and forth.
I despise that corny speech connie made and that horrid build up white diamond made with her rant. Because it dragged and it was obvious somebody was gonna tell her to shut up and give a corny speech. The episode would've been fine without them.
Honestly what bothers me a lot about Connie's speech is that it also kinda makes her sound "better than everyone else." Like she never had a hand in causing Steven problems. The time she got pissed off when Steven got literally abducted to save his whole family? And she acted like she was wronged because he didn't take her to a wacky space adventure? Yeah, no. I hate Connie anyway so it can just be that talking, but it just felt...cheesy, out of place and awful.
THANK YOU, I knew I wasn't the only one who hated her speech! 😭They even made everything dark and cloudy because EvErYoNe Is LoSiNg HoPe! Then when she makes her speech, the clouds LITERALLY PART and make everything bright and sunny again cuz HoPe! It was annoyingly on the nose, I have never rolled my eyes so hard 🤧
I was thinking,,,, he didn't even faced the consecuences of his acts (shatter Jasper and trying to do the same to WD) and my only explanation to this is... b e c a u s e h e i s a d i a m o n d
The diamonds too, they literally got away with all of their wrong doings for no good reason. The shattering gems, the forced fusions, the space genocide, none of it mattered because it can all be undone now.
Nice to know I am not the only one who fucking hates the diamonds. After all the sins they have committed they are not punished. Instead they turn into overbearing aunts. I am so glad I dropped the show.
There’s less of an in-universe explanation and more of it just being shitty writing. Rebecca wanted to redeem The Diamonds and she didn’t really care how that came across or how she did it. Steven faced no repercussions because we got to wrap 👏 this 👏 shit 👏 up 👏!
@@RedMoonSolitary i actually like Jasper too, she's just like rose in the sense that she's a victim of her environment and the society that the diamonds created her in.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, that was a gripe I had with the shows when I first got into it and it still persisted to the end of the original series, the 11 minute run time made me feel that certain episodes felt a bit rushed or ended abruptly with little happening in an episode and it didn’t really bother me towards the end cause I had started to catch on quick to it.
Yeah even the crew themselves said that bc CN give their shows a running time of 11 minutes, it’s hard for them to pace their stories that they want to tell. Hell I think that if the show was for 30 minutes like Gravity Falls or The Owl House, the specials and the finales or the show in general would better.
I’m probably the only one who’s gonna say this, but I don’t like this ending as much or a little less than Change Your Mind. Yes, this ending has more emotional weight, but it has the same rushed feeling for me.. Steven Universe is a good show, but the ending wasn’t the that satisfying for me. Good video! *bonus points for using clips of Oswald from Epic Mickey-*
Change Your Mind was rushed, but the end with "We are crystal gems" made me, a 26 guy almost cry. I didn't felt the same at the movie ending coz we gonna get new season. I didnt feel anything when Steven left. To me, he's not a guy who runs from his family. Now he's just like Pink Diamond. Rebecca really screw up with the message.
The ending didn’t even make me cry like I expected. I cried more over the fact that the series was ending with a bad taste in my mouth of Steven universe future.
@Unknown Warrior So much agreement! Like, maybe Jasper and Steven could have been their own version of Vegeta and Goku (especially because Jasper radiates so much of the same characteristics that Vegeta emulates in DBZ) with the both of them learning from and teaching each other, while having VERY contrasting ideologies and beliefs based on their life experiences. But nooooooo, we get Jasper being unfairly and violently shattered and then brought back to life to "serve" her Diamond. Ugh, that scene still makes me cringe and carries so many unfortunate implications (for the record I actually liked how the episode did in the beginning, but it crashed and burned towards the end). 😑🙄
Then they ruined it by changing the fundamental rules the show established earlier in the series. Death means nothing anymore. Suspension of disbelief is dead, tension is dead.
@@MiaoNya yeah . Now death in Steven Universe just means wait for Steven to come back. If Jasper would have actually died to Steven that would've truely shown how bad Steven had become and created more tension.
Meow Even before they decided being shattered was nothing the show had no tension. Everything will always work out, no questions asked. We don’t even get like a first hand recount of what being shattered was like, seeing as the gems aren’t actually dead when shattered and are just seeking out their other pieces unable to reform. There’s no trauma or scarring or fear of death from Jasper or any of the other reformed gems.
They defend Earth and humanity but know so little about humanity for there thousands of years of life. Peridot got that Steven was hurting but didn't mention that to the other gems??? Bismuth deserved more screen time and a fusion.
Fun fact: In Mr Greg, Greg offers Steven to go to school but Steven refuses. I quote, “I could take you to college. But I’m with the gems all the time”
Box Fish I was just thinking about that...I listened to the album before seeing the episodes so with that quote in mind, the drama with Greg felt like such a reach😬
Yeah and that whole car seen made it seem like Greg didn’t care about the fact Steven was fighting monsters and space tyrants because “he was free” when they clearly showed during the jail break arc Greg wanted to get Steven away from that danger, with Steven deciding to head back, and afterwards he nearly had a heart attack hearing about what happened to Steven. It’s one of the things I really hate when a story turns a character into a complete 180* or an idiot just for the sake of a story they want to do regardless if that character is nothing like that
This whole Steven universe Shippuden series made me upset with how the writers handle things. It seems to me that they develop interesting conflict but don’t seem to give impelling solution. (Also how come Steven never went to the doctor but somehow has a license to drive? I mean don’t you need a physical and Id for you to get a license?) Also how did the cluster get unbubbled to hold back monster Steven? Once gems are poof and bubble they can’t reform( I know they were unbubbled to hold back the diamonds but I still need an answer on how they got unbubbled) Shattering lost it purpose in Steven Universe Super bc somehow the diamonds and Steven can fix shatter gems so the gems are never in real danger I guess. Steven just turning into a monster doesn’t make sense like what he thought he was a monster so he became a monster? Ok? Than for Steven Universe Future to turn back into Steven Universe and that they just hug him and he got over his problem it’s just nonsense. There was also way too much filler in this limited series. Why waste time on a very special episodes and that Steven tag episode when you build up other antagonists like bluebird? And thank u like I felt like the gems kept pushing him back and forth like why are the gems acting like this? Tell him you worry about him and let’s talk when you’re ready to talk. Not just the gems but Greg too. I can understand why some of you would love the series I was a fan about the series until I saw change my mind, than the movie was a little bit better than this future series just got me mad on how they handle the finale. Don’t build up Steven acting like an antagonist just for it to be over in 5 min and everything is cool. Like I said u cool to your opinion but this future series was bad
Jasper wasted....Pink Diamond made into a villain and no one ever discussed it ...says he might never go back to beach city...why?! Connie is going to go back home to visit her parents. Is he just going to drive around forever? I don’t get the choices
Starfire ugh, and the diamonds...blue and yellow became so bland and as for white...5 seasons of anticipation just for her to turn into a mess of a character...WHAT?!
Erika Keka I agree they hyped up White to be the final villain of the show and an opponent that Steven can’t reason with BUT NAHH!!!!! that hype didn’t matter cause it was such a good idea to have the hyped up big bad to be redeemed and defeated all because Steven made her blush (I’m clearly being sarcastic)
U know, Steven should have turned into Pink Diamond when he said "I'm a monster". He has felt conflicted about her so long and that would be what he thinks himself as even when he knows he isn't her
Plinko I think they did that for legal reasons. I mean this is still a kids show a kid doesn’t want his favorite character literally turning into a monster in front of his eyes like damn.
DreamerWeaver how was it wasted over a ending being bad in your opinion? Just because you think a ending is bad, doesn’t mean the show was wasted. I respect your opinion but please explain to me how? T^T
@@olivesjar I can't explained it properly on a RUclips comment format but since you seem interest I'll explained quickly how, Steven Universe was wasted potential, at least to me, someone who has being following this series since the promo commercials and basically grew with it. Not only the ending but the show itself was disappointing in all senses. Steven Universe had a reputation for being labelled as one of the greatest series of modern animation because of all the lore, representation, the character [arcs], its occasional dark themes and concepts hidden under its bright colour, the mature and delicate topics this show was brave enough to show when not one else did, and more. But despite all this positive traits the one thing that always seem consistent in the series was its poor execution, well intended but bad handling of characters (like bismuth, lapis, pink diamond, or Jasper for example) and the lack of a real resolution to problems. Everything seems to end on a vague note and sometimes the show never addresses it again, I love this show but I'm not willing to forgive its flaws since in most instances it counteracted with its strengths.
Let’s be honest here, We all know that the show became trash when the diamonds got their redemption, when I first saw the full intro song clip and yellow shadow I had chills, but now we have dictators turned into clowns
Jasper, A Gem who struggles with knowing they come from a planet that’s the place where their Diamond was supposedly shattered on, Jasper, A Gem who’s main reason of being is to avenge their Diamond Jasper, That SAME Gem who wanted Lapis to take revenge on the Crystal Gems for capturing her ended up being trapped in the ocean and abused by said Gem Jasper, Who months ends up finding out that their diamonds legacy was a sham and that same Rebelious leader that caused a war for earth ended up being that same leader Jasper, The Gem that was shattered at the hands of their Diamonds Child Just to be brought back and humbled _But hey Atleast her ego’s shrunken after all of this, not like there was any lasting effects on her_
The writers spend forever playing up the anxiety and trauma because they like having a huge dramatic climax. The problem is that this narrative structure clashes super hard with the theme of communication this show tries to have. Effective communication de-escalates emotional tension, and it a moral I can get behind. The problem is that SU follows a super predictable and frustrating formula where a character will have some sort of personal demon, they will bottle their emotions, other characters will ask what is wrong to which the first character will usually say "I'm fine", then all of the repressed feelings will come bursting to the surface just in time for the climax. The biggest slap in the face is that NONE of the characters ever seem to learn how to manage their emotions or how to communicate more effectively. They just endlessly repeat this cycle for the sake of drama. That's what I find somewhat insidious about SU. They want to talk about these serious issues, but they dont provide any realistic solutions or commentary. They just use them as drama fodder, and then give us a super rushed or convenient resolution that ends up making everything feel cheap and melodramatic (i.e. Steven ends millions of years of fascist dictatorship with a sassy comeback). It's sloppy and pretentious.
@Sir Embrum49 The Great Moth i got into this show because of the cool fights and forshadowing and I loved the early bread crumbs we got for fan theories that were correct. I loved the build up. Then we realized too late the end game sugar had.
Thissss!!! At the very least these sequel projects didn't disappoint me much because I was already disappointed with the dumpster fire that how the original show ended was. Any claims to good writing and world building they had no longer existed. They were just cool ideas (among many) the writers obviously didn't have the skill to bring to life. The fan content was in a lot of ways better, the only prais-able merit the show itself had by the end was art direction... which even then has some criticisms for lack of consistency amongst other things.
The key to understanding how bad this finale is is coming to terms with the fact that the crew are NOT good writers. They are all talented people with good ideas but they do not know how to make them consistently cohesive
Mikaru I honestly would’ve preferred if it lasted 2 or 3 episodes I also thought there would be an era 3 rebellion and any rebel would try to kidnap monster Steven and so the cast goes and save him
lets not forget that Steven, Sweet now vegetarian boy Steven, killed Jasper. Steven, the boy who wouldnt hurt a bug, straight up shattered her just because of some teenage angst and anxiety? i get it made for a really impactful moment in the show but it went against everything that steven believed in. To make it even worse they then undo all of it by piecing her back together again good as new. they set up all the drama but then dont stand by any of it
@@mascotwithadinosaur9353 im over simplifying it a bit but given everything stevens been through throughout the whole show , its now that he has a break down and starts trying to kill people? loosing his composure is one thing but he actively tried to kill jasper and white diamond and almost succeeded with it. i bit of a build up throughout the show would have sold this better is my main point.
T-posing Pingu While I think the idea itself is fine and can work well I don't feel as if they wrote it as well as they could've. Now the conflict with the diamonds mainly got resolved because oh hey steven's actually the son of the diamond they've all been grieving over so woohoo easy plot fix. White Diamond was supposed to be the antithesis to that kind of resolution however, since she didn't give a care about pink diamonds blights at least not originally. But no that was also resolved in a half hearted easy way. That aspect felt cheap to me and then led to many more rushed writings aspects. Honestly I think the show suffered most from the constraints CN gave it leading to it being rushed at some points.

First of all, thumbnail and title game is *on point* Second of all, loving the unscripted rant with music in the background. It's hard to explain but the whole video just had an amazingly cohesive atmosphere.
For me I feel this show had no major consequences to speak of that every thing can be Wish away with power of love friendship etc.l know that what the show was about but personally wanted to see a arc with Steven and the gems deal with other intelligence forms life because the gem empire clasped that to me could had been an interesting plot instead of dealing with Steven teenage angst and taking out on everybody .I don’t know personally after all these years the ending of the show was a let down to me at lest.I don’t I just wanted to get my thoughts out.Great video by the way
Steven's not corrupt. Just like the cat shape shifting and age episode, his form is psychological. His life ability may also contribute to making the forms have their own mind. Yes, Volli's eye is psychological. Psychogenic Blindness.
Technicly, Steven didn't get corrupted. He just got sooooooo sad he shapeshifted. Which is still anticlimatic. Because as you said, there's only two ways for corruption. And he didn't go through either
@@DarkPulsaterLiteGear To be fair, none of the other corrupted gems in the show had colors specifically geared around their gem. Centipede had a yellow-green gem but dark green-black colors.
I also Didn't like that Steven Just left his "Diamond half" of him behind, Just like he was trying to run away from it. I think it would be better for him to learn how to control his Diamond powers, not try to avoid it.
I really wish that instead of SUF, they added an extra season onto SU and extended the length of the white diamond arc, so there would’ve been time to resolve everything else that was left behind. When watching the show without the insane hiatus’s, it becomes a lot more clear how rushed everything was
Y'know, when the team from Young Justice went through a traumatic experience in Season 1, we actually got to SEE them talk about their issues with Black Canary! Meanwhile, this show completely glosses over a potentially interesting therapy session with Steven. The writers of Steven Universe don't understand anything about the topics they're trying to address.
The problem with Greg was more that Steven was extremely upset about the fact that Greg had what it could be called "a normal childhood" and he was so desperate for something even remotely like that that he ended up not noticing how miserable Greg's parents made him feel. Steven is literally the most empathetic guy in the galaxy, so if he didn't notice something was wrong, there was a reason for that. And then in the van Greg kind of dismissed Steven's problems as if he was lucky to have what he had, even though he had to (literally) kill himself to get it. I'm not bashing on Greg here, trust me, I understand why he was acting the way he was, but in that particular moment he kind of fucked up, and it was even worse when he just tried to see the bright side of things and just straight didn't acknowledge Steven's feelings and problems he clearly was going through. No wonder Steven tuned him out after that. After that, Steven felt like he had no one to talk to anymore, because if his own DAD didn't understand him, than who would? I actually really like this plotline. It makes Greg look less like a flawless cool dad like he always was and shows the flaws on his way of parenting and shows WHY they're there. Kinda like they did with Steven himself, considering his character arc was pretty much done by the end of season 5, so actually showing the consequences of everything he had to go through to get there and showing the toll that saving the galaxy and forgiving literally everyone who's tried to kill him had on him. It could've been done better, sure, and I completely agree with you about him only being Corrupted for one episode, I mean, c'mon, seriously? That was your chance guys! C'mon! But just the fact that they actually tackled Steven's mental health and bottled up trauma is SO GOOD because it's something I've always wanted to see in the show. Mindful Education did it and it was fucking awesome, but that was one of the only instanced where we see Steven actually reflected on his trauma like that. And it's completely suiting that his powers go haywire now since we know they are tied to his emotions, but the explanation as to why they're there is SO GOOD. The fact that Steven's body and mind doesn't know how to not react to any threat as if it was the end of the world is really heartbreaking and honestly frickin brilliant, because it actually turns his powers into a hindrance and something to be feared for once, which we've had before, but not in this extent or depth or straight up stakes, because Steven is pretty much invincible when he goes all out, so turning the final boss into him makes complete sense, even though the pay off wasn't really that great. I guess I'm just really happy that these things were actually addressed and acknowledged in the show for once, so maybe that's just me being biased, and I completely get your point of view, but, I don't know. I'm more of a guy who just appreciates things like shows and games and movies for what they are and just try to not think about the flaws. But again, that's just me.
Are you sure that the show's writing was good? - They screwed us around with pointless filler. - Their messages are contradictive, due to wanting conflicting things at the same time. - So many things go unexplained. - Outright insulting fight scenes, that belong in The Rise of Skywalker. - Lame composition (where are the camera angles?) - Conflicting tones at every corner. - The perspective is latched to a naïve idiot that can get grating to listen to. - Too many inconsistencies to count, minor and major. - The worldbuilding is outright insulting, on par with The Force Awakens. - Why in the holy hell did the main villain change their views on a fucking whim? - Why do the main characters never suffer any kind of permanent failure? - Every single character is incompetent to the point of insanity. And that's just the first charge; the main series. Onto the movie: - There was far too many songs. - The Diamonds really are redeemed. - The plot was a nonsensical mess. - The B team, who should've been the protagonists from the start, got shafted to an unforgiveable degree. - Steven had some kind of offscreen paradigm shift, with no good reason. - There was no lasting consequence. - Yet more black marks are left on the worldbuilding. - The most redeemable Diamond is shat on, despite forgiving the other three so damn easily. - Nothing happened; the thing can be skipped, because all you need to know is that Spinel is now with the Diamonds. - The dialogue was just horrible. And then, of course, Future just bought up the rear to burn the rest down: - Steven has become Jake Skywalker, and it makes even less sense than it did in The Last Jedi. - The voice acting is just horrific. - The tone is even more all over the place. - The messages are forced as hell. - Several characters are broken for the sake of said messages. - More and more powers are just getting thrown around. - They _still_ waste time. - Why does Steven face no retribution for the awful things he did? - Everyone hugged him before and it didn't work, so why now? - What exactly was the results of the indoctrination camp -- sorry, I mean _rehab school_? - Why are there so damn many unanswered questions? - Why has everyone just bowed to Christ The Redeemer so easily? And that's just off the top of my head. Although, the thing that pissed me off the most was how they handled Peridot and Lapis. Lapis was written horribly inconsistently, and Peridot's redemption was awful. Fight me.
I agree with almost everything, but what makes you think Peridot's redemption was awful ? (It's a real question, it's not often that I see this arc be criticised.)
@燈籠草Here it is: Where do I begin with the daughter of Zim and Toph Beifong? I might be one of the few people on the internet who'll say her redemption is poorly written, but here is why. Up to Keeping it Together, there wasn't an issue with her character, considering how little of her there was. From there up until Catch and Release, the only issue was how incompetent the Crystal Gems were. Or, Peridot was really capable, but we'll get back to that. In Catch and Release, it is odd how Peridot can survive falling boulders and long falls, but not being crushed by Garnet. And it was wrong of Amethyst to just throw her limb enhancers into the ocean, considering Peridot might need them, or they could study them, but fine. The sequence in the rest of this episode is good, very like Zim, so it's okay. Onto When it Rains, I honestly appreciate the sequence here, and it just shows me again that this whole series had so much potential. I just believe it would have been preferable for the Crystal Gems to not be so condescending to Peridot and show up for a deus ex machina save. In Back to the Barn, things start to go really wrong. The dialogue between Peridot and Pearl is bad on both fronts; Pearl for being extremely condescending in tone for no reason, and Peridot not seeing the blatant hypocrisy in her being another kind of servant, like every other Gem that isn't a Diamond, in terms of orders. I'd probably have the conflict come down to Peridot simply believing that she's better for the job, and Pearl's emotional bias getting in the way. And at the end, it was Pearl who threw the first punch, on top of the condescending behaviour, so Peridot is justified in beating the crap out of her, winning fair and square. Steven's speech was nice for Pearl, sure, but comes off as condescending again towards Peridot. That issue is still present throughout the arc, and it's a real shame, but a highlight goes to the Garnet corker, "Welcome to Earth." One, this isn't Independence Day and you aren't as cool as Will Smith, and two, you may as well have told her that favouritism does exist here, and you should obey us now, not your Diamond. You may have won, but you get nothing because we like Pearl more than you. Let's move onto Too Far. Why did Peridot ask Garnet to unfuse? From her perspective, fusions are machines for war, and no one has bothered to explain anything different to her. So it's like holding a loaded gun to her head, and she's asking it to be lowered. And Garnet's response is to tie her up like a dog, or a baby. Which is insulting, but what I find funny is that Peridot is coded as autistic, and the Crystal Gems are exhibiting behaviours that are very insulting to those groups. That aside, we get to the main meat of the episode, where Peridot said something unintentionally offensive, Amethyst got angry, and Peridot learned to apologize. Except, that's what the show would have us believe. Let's look at it from the perspective of Peridot again. She's been saying what she believed was the truth up until now, and Amethyst was laughing at her terms, semi-maliciously, all the way up to her segment. And then, she proceeds to act in a passive-aggressive way for the entire episode, until an apology is wrangled out of Peridot. Over one fucking joke that wasn't even meant to be hurtful, and not even a life-saving act can undo it! So not only is Amethyst a snowflake, she herself should have said sorry to Peridot for doing what she did to her. Seriously, an apology from both of them and a big hug would go a long way. On top of that, why does Peridot believe that Amethyst is the best Crystal Gem? She didn't respect power before, so why now? Can't we have them bonding over the fact they're both defective, instead of our Invader finding a new Tallest to fawn over. Next up is the subtitle for this show, It Could've Been Great. Peridot is absolutely right about the Crystal Gems slacking off, which was a problem all throughout, and Steven just has a horribly naïve response. And then, the gems shrug off Peridot's possible PTSD of being crushed by Garnet, despite how Pearl had PTSD from the war, and all of the Crystal Gems have some sort of thing that makes them upset. Is it just funny cause she's from Homeworld? Awesome. Now, Peridot's rant about Rose was completely right. The only thing to touch up is how it's left to them to save it. And in response, what do the Crystal Gems do? Explain things to her sensibly? No, it's to go Antifa mode, yell at her, say she's wrong without describing why, and threaten her with violence. Why do we like them again? And Steven getting upset that she didn't bow down to his worldview after a few weeks at best of imprisonment (really) is just stupid. And, "Rose Quartz believed all life was precious, and worth protecting!" "LIAR! (Read that in full Episode III.)" If it was all life on one ball of water and rock, you might be right, but you are aware that many other planets are being ravaged right now while you just sit around, you donkey. Not to mention the potential millions of other gems that are serving a corrupt regime at this point.
@燈籠草 Let's move onto Message Received. This won't take long, because we only need to point out one scene. I understand what they were doing, but how we got there was stupid. If all it took was one irrational thing to completely change Peridot's view of her Diamond, why did that not happen before? What about the potential thousands of other logical decisions Yellow made? Hundreds, if not thousands of years of conditioning can't break in the space of three minutes, people! Why didn't Peridot try to explain to the Crystal Gems what she was going to do? Steven would've been on board, because it would've worked out best for everyone! Although, considering a certain line he had, maybe not. He deadass says: “No no no, I don't want to tell her what to do. She should just know. Shouldn't she?” She should just KNOW? What the fuck?! That’s like saying, “I don’t wanna have to TEACH a baby how to walk. They should just know, shouldn’t they?” And if they rejected that, do they just not care about any other Gem besides the ones on Earth?! On top of that, she could've worded her response about the planet serving Yellow better, rather than taking a self deprecating view of herself. Ultimately, to tie back to earlier, Peridot spoke the truth about Rose, and yet, as a result, she is abused(Garnet grabbing her collar and threatening her), locked up (in a car, by Steven of all people) and told to fight for a cause she doesn't believe in, "whether you like it or not." These kinds of details are part of why this show's script is so heavily broken. There was an attempt to send several messages, but they are at active odds with the narrative and the character progression. (see also: Lapis.) I understand that these ideas and these themes exist, but they are not effectively executed. They contradict themselves. We were all led to believe Peridot chose the Earth, but half of the choices were made for her (e.g. losing the limb enhancers) and she was abused into this position. Yes, this is Stockholm Syndrome, through and through! Great redemption my ass! And by the way, there is no change in attitude after that from the Crystal Gems; Garnet doesn't respect her any more, (leaving her behind for the Zoo), Amethyst is still humiliating her, and Pearl still acts condescendingly! Catch is, though, I can't tell for sure, because she only appears in fourteen episodes after Too Short to Ride. In Log Date 7 15 2 (the best of the series), I don't have a lot to say, though it would be nice to see Garnet getting challenged a bit more on fusion (How is being submerged in someone else love? That sounds like the worst punishment ever!) Same thing with Gem Drill, although what we see of her in Same Old World is kind of awful - reduced to someone one note. In Barn Mates and Hit the Diamond, I have nothing else to say (because fuck this is long) other than "Can you please say or do something smart?!" Onto Too Short to Ride, it wasn't exactly nice to see her get humiliated and shat on. Where is the Uncle Iroh or Luke Skywalker who can give her a big old hug and say that they were never mad at her? And her having metalbending just opens up so many options that the writers just refuse to capitalise on. To summarise so far, Peridot was stranded on a hostile, doomed planet with nothing to survive but her wits, only to end up kidnapped and forced to join a faction of rebels who hate her. She beat Pearl in an engineering competition fair and square, only for Pearl to win everything with no recognition of Peridot's talent (huge self worth hit right there), she supposedly learned to stop saying hurtful things, and Amethyst still laughs at her and humiliates her (why are they shipped again?), not seeing the blatant hypocrisy, and she failed at fusing with the most perfect fusion in the universe (another huge self esteem hit), and Garnet doesn't give her any helpful advice about finding love herself when she really needs it. Honestly Peridot, you were lucky that Christo Redentor Steven saw you as a pitiable, harmless creature for long enough that you could act in a way they found respectable. Amethyst might've kept you around to laugh at your lack of understanding, and Pearl might have worked out her slave mindset by using you as one, but Garnet might have locked you away forever like Bismuth or even killed you had Steven not stepped in. In Beta and Earthlings, there isn't much of anything again, although it could be interesting if it turned out she was only doing all of it because she was frightened the Crystal Gems would end her if she didn't cave to their way of life. But I'm getting ahead of myself. In Kindergarten Kid, I was honestly hurt by her sudden stupidity out of nowhere. Why is she being beaten by a single corrupted Gem, which is established to have the intelligence of a wild animal? Did the Crystal Gems just want to see her beaten down for a laugh? That thing wasn't a worthy opponent at all! Can you please say or do something smart, Peridot?! Nothing wrong at all with Gem Harvest, and I've already mentioned the shafting issue, and the intelligence issue is still there in Room for Ruby. Moving onto Raising the Barn and Back to the Kindergarten, it was interesting that Peridot censored herself to make Lapis happy. I always took it as wanting to keep her safe and loved, and I already said how that same thing could be applied to the other Crystal Gems. And it further highlights the self-worth route they could've, and should've, explored with her. Lastly, in Reunited, Change Your Mind, the movie, and in Future, we have all the same problems again. Why has she been snubbed completely? Is nothing else she can do? Why is your character one note? Can someone please give you a hug? Are you acting this way of your own free will or not? Why have Peridot and Lapis not apologised to each other and hugged it out? Do you have nothing else to say other than stupid jokes? Peridot, can you please say or do something smart?! Why are you so terrible now?! Seriously, can you please leave Lapis and Peridot alone now? You fucking raped them both!
@燈籠草 Speaking of Lapis: Lapis was introduced as a character that had serious beef with the Crystal Gems, enough to lash out at them and Steven for trying to prevent her from leaving; maybe she thought they would put her in another mirror. To this date, however, we still don't know why she was left there after Pearl found her, what her "short visit" to Earth was for, what happened when she got back to Homeworld, or who she was like before the madness that was the war happened. And all of these things could tell us so much about her, you have no idea. (Although, she does get several thousand points for kicking the Crystal Gems' asses while injured.) Kicking on, everything up to the ship crashing does make sense, although it would have been nice to see how Peridot treated her, but the fusing of Lapis and Jasper is a huge issue in and of itself. Firstly, although Jasper is trying to goad her into doing it "Come on. Just say yes.", why isn't she capable of fighting her off when the ocean is five meters, at most, away from her? She did it with no problem in Alone at Sea, so why not here? Secondly, when Malachite is formed (and the Crystal Gems do fuck all, standing around like muffins when they should be doing something) it's blatantly obvious that it's two separate personalities in one form, which adds more questions to the issue of fusion, but let's not get into that here. Thirdly, and this isn't really related to Lapis, but I could not help but wince at the cringe worthy line "Yikes. Those two are really bad for each other." Just fuck off, Garnet. You should have been freaking out like you were in Keeping it together. Fourthly, everyone's saying her motive was awful, but considering her character, it made sense; she was used as a tool for so long, by everyone, and just now was being used again, and wanted to be in control and make someone suffer. We don't have to like it, but we can understand it. Either way, when we next run into Lapis in Chille Tid (awful name) we find out that she's keeping Jasper there for Steven; "Just let me do this for you!" "I've got to hold us down with the weight of your planet's ocean!" It does make sense that she'd do that for him, but I'm still wondering why he wasn't desperate to search for her. We can skip over Super Watermelon Island, and its fucking awful fight choreography that belongs in The Rise of Skywalker, and get to Same Old World. The montage it gives us is nice, and the background music is great, but the reveal of her backstory is just disappointing; it brings up more questions that we need to know answers to, though the important part is that we don't know that the Bismuth that punched her was the one we know, and if it was, then we should have had a scene where Lapis confronted Bismuth over it, and if there was any anger at causing her several millennia of pain. What a fucking scene that could've been! Either way, moving onto Barn Mates, it's kind of awful. Why is she refusing kindness? Why does it take Steven for her to see that Peridot doesn't want to hurt her? Why the fuck did she break the tape recorder? Is there any good reason for Lapis acting like an outrageous cunt here? Why does she seem so bored beating back the Rubies? Why does Steven have to be the one to explain everything to her? (We'll get back to that.) The only saving grace is the cute af scene that kickstarted Lapidot. Hit the Diamond we can skip, cause we're gonna hit a big one. Alone at Sea. It starts off fine, trying to help her with water, and there isn't that much to discuss until the storm, and Jasper, hit. She says she misses being Malachite, and implies she's disgusted at herself for it, and then proceeds to rattle off all that she's done up until now, ending with "Tell me I'm wrong!" Then Jasper rocks up, and she says that Steven's got his shield the wrong way. We're meant to think that she's blowing hot air here, and she kind of is, but there's a point to it. She then begs Lapis to fuse again, saying that she's changed. Everyone's going off about how this is common abuser language, and they're right, but that isn't what's being discussed here. Here, the show could've gone in an amazing route - where both Lapis and Jasper were horrible people, and did awful things that they're directly responsible for, but the key difference was that Lapis heavily regrets her choices and wants to amend, whereas Jasper does not. However, what they actually do is insulting - put all of the blame on Jasper to paint Lapis as the saint, when she never was. It's kind of insulting that they'd pull that kind of morality when they also pride themselves on complex morality - but let's not get into that now. Beta, Gem Harvest, and The New Crystal Gems we can all skip over, cause fucking hell this is long and there isn't much to say other than Lapis isn't really that bad, and these are the reasons, among others that Lapidot should be real. Room for Ruby doesn't have much either, though it does prove Lapis right about not trusting Navy specifically, as opposed to others in general. It's insulting that both she and Peridot were shafted for no good reason in The Zoo and abduction arcs, because it's a sign the writers either hate them both or don't know what they're doing. Then we get to Raising the Barn, Can't Go Back, and Reunited, which are all symptoms of the same inconsistency. Why do The Diamonds put the fear of God into her? Why didn't she drag Peridot and Pumpkin along instead of leaving them? Why take the barn in the first place if she doesn't use it outside of something an asteroid could do instead? Why did she leave again without the barn? Why did she come back when the Diamonds actually came? If she wasn't really scared before, why come when they actually turn up? Why did she only use chains of water instead of using water clones or anything else? How is she able to resist Blue Diamond in the first place? And then Lapis gets shafted, along with Peridot, again! Neither does much of anything in that god awful finale, and Lapis only gets a few lines and part of a song in the movie. Which brings us here, to Future. Why is she able to overpower two of her own kind? Why is the song part elevator music? Why is the fight scene here worse than the one in TLJ's throne room? Did she learn nothing over Navy - why is she so accepting of the Nice Lapis when she tried to bifurcate her head? Why didn't she use the water golem move earlier in the series? Why are the writes forcing this phoned in lesson of strength? I'd rather listen to Kreia again. But the big one is this: Why did she back down so easily?! She should have fought back and poofed the mean one, maybe both, considering that they were still terraforming and were about to bifurcate her head, and triggered her memories when they chained her up, and Steven stood around, fallen asleep at the wheel. And Lapis just fucking changed her tune with one fucking glance from Steven! Where is her conviction?! Actually, now that I think about it, she's always had to look at Steven before making a major choice; running from the Crystal Gems, making the choice to fuse with Jasper, fighting Jasper on the boat, joining them for the final fight, the movie fiasco, and the shit in Future. This is the girl who overpowered the will of Jasper for months. The same girl who went through with her fleeing plan, despite how painful it was. The same girl who stood up to her Diamond. But now her conviction is gone! She's been reduced to a worthless fucking lackey. And it's kind of stupid that Steven is getting her to control her anger, when four episodes prior he couldn't control his own, and failed to later on in E P I K fashion, but alright! Don't worry, we're not done! They haven't had enough of shitting all over Lapis and Peridot! Sheer stupidity of the hug aside, the last shot we get of the superior group of characters - Peridot, Lapis, and Bismuth - ugly crying while fawning over Christo Redentor. That is the lasting taste of the real heroes, the ones who suffered, the ones who deserved so much better than this.
Steven could have been easily made influenced by Conne's mother to become a doctor or therapist since He needs to help others, I mean He can heal anything, but nooooo, let's make him keep wasting his time
Yafavakuec 123 Yeah, they basically made her the bad guy and called it a day. No more exploring pink and her motivations, let's all just assume that she's evillllll
Erika Keka What makes It weirder is because that is part of reason why Steven was having so much trouble. He was afraid of become like the other diamonds especially his mother causing him to turn pink at the slightest mention of her name. I feel like the box should’ve not been opened until the final episode to Steven universe future. The box should’ve had all of Pink diamond’s memories and a letter explaining everything to Steven.
I've been on and off the show for a bit now. Seeing as I got closure after like 600 hiatuses, I've come to the conclusion that the writing is just ALL over the place to the point where this show was ruined by it's own inconsistency. The show freakin' excelled in payoffs, but never actually execute them properly because of not only how short each episode was, but by how characters suddenly act different just to push the plot along. I can name only two characters who had the best character development, and only one of them in the initial main cast. Those being Amethyst, and Peridot. Ugh...
THANK YOU SOMEONE FREAKIN SAID IT!! They had hyped up the corruption so damn much! Like I honestly expected it to at least be maybe be two episodes long. At least that would’ve made the built up suspense worth it. But this barely lasted five minutes and and made it so lame... like... this is why I wasn’t even eager to watch SUF at all. Like I really wasn’t wanting to watch it at all and this is just proves it. Thank you.
@@padparade Thats the joke, we could have got more episodes with lapis or peridot or character building but instead we got episodes like "Rocknaldo" and "your mother and mine"
@@padparade if the show was still an episodic series with a monster of the week it'd be ok, but the show went so far beyond that format that filler episodes feel like a waste when there so many other threads to dive in to.
Steven Universe keeps taking these big steps and just stops the whole conflict for a while until it is too late. In season 1 we get introduced to Amethyst's insecurity issues, which go on and off suddenly. They don't seem to have any previous hinting in other episodes, Pearl isn't over Rose and makes Steven feel guilty about it and we learn that Garnet is a fusion with future vision. In season 2 we get to know more about Peridot, who seems to get her redemption arc done in the same season and it was actually really well done, until they put her away, because they couldn't figure out what to do with her. Lapis apparently felt bad about forcing Jasper into the ocean.. she enjoyed taking everything out on her instead of the thousands of year of being trapped in a mirror. Pretty surprizing that someone who wanted to go to Homeworld, because Earth was too small just sat in the barn for so many seasons. At this point, Garnet is just a broken plot-device for convenient future vision powers and fusion advice. Nothing note worthy to say about her. Amethyst got over her insecurities after beating up Jasper around like season 4-5 during the Jasper Arc, which I thing had the whole Bishmuth episode randomly in the middle of it, which is a common theme in the show. At least Amethyst got over her conflict unlike Pearl. We found out in season 5 that rose was Pink Diamond, meaning she was in love with her master the entire time and only her death would actually cause her to move on to become her own gem (that's what the movie said) Crewniverse claims that there were hints about Rose being Pink Diamond, but they were so vague they could have really turned them into any plotwist. It doesn't help that they obviously didn't write ahead and the story just comes out of the bushes. Steven Universe Future is the actual end of Steven's inner conflict that should have ended in season 5, because they can't seem to write anything without switching from one character to another and creating even more loose-ends than they were supposed to tie together.
I'm also unsatisfied with SUF, first of all I think on Mr.universe Greg was out of character just so steven can get more "trauma". not only that on the same episode I don't understand why steven gets so angry with his dad(I think it was because of the family name but I'm not sure). and yes the corruption of steven kinda came out of nowhere and the problem got solved so fast I didn't feel any emotions in the end...but since I'm a crybaby I was swimming in my tears in the final episode. I really love this show and I think SUF it's a perfectly enjoyable experience for those who can turn their brain off.(because GOD knows how many things are out place in this show)unfortunately the bad stuff is more apparent than the good stuff,so for this one I'll give a 6/10...also cat 12:51 :3
I like the finale of how Steven is ready to be independent and move on, but I'm still dissatisfied that there are still unanswered questions and Rebecca could've made a 22 minute episode that had shown all of these misses opportunities.
My biggest problem with the ending was *it was clearly rushed!* Like why couldn’t Steven have been corrupted for several episodes while they tried to figure out the solution? Also everyone’s ragging on Greg for his parenting-style but at the end of the day *he did his best with what he was given!* He was left to raise a “magical-hybrid” baby by his longtime-lover with no clue of what their child would inherit from Pink-Rose or all the baggage Pink-Rose left behind for them to deal with! In the final few episodes especially his interactions with the Diamonds, I found myself disliking Steven a bit. He got what he wanted because they *willingly dismantled their empire and started treating all Gems as equals because Steven wanted them to!* I know he was still freaking from shattering Jasper but he didn’t even acknowledge their efforts - Yellow fixing broken Gems and giving them their Forms back, Blue spreading good cheer and White ... okay that was freaky, and he’s kinda entitled to being wary of White because of the whole “Pink Steven” thing ... but they’re not goddamned mind-readers! Steven spent the series getting others to talk instead of fighting but when it matters *he clams up about his own problems?!* 😒😒😒 Also you mentioned how Steven could’ve done online classes? You’re totally right: Steven could’ve done this but Greg had already mentioned this in the Mr Greg episode when they’re singing their opening duet of the episode: “I could put you through college?” “But I’m with the Gems all the time!” “ ... I could buy you all the finest courses online!” So Greg mentioned it, but neither he *nor Steven* followed up in this suggestion! Also when you mentioned Steven being sick? I *think* the episode you’re looking for is “Warp Tour”, Steven gets a mild case of hay fever during this episode when they’re in a field of flowers. Other than that I don’t think he’s ever shown signs of *human* sickness (if we’re counting the whole Corrupted Kaiju Steven thing as an illness) Thanks for a great and stay safe (I wish we’d had more of Pink-Godzilla-Steven too!) Laters KittyCraft 💙🐱💙
videogameflumingo okay fair enough, but we only for Kaiju Steven for 2 seconds of one episode (when he started corrupting) then the majority of the following episode ... and they saved the day through *The Power of Hugs!* ... Really not sure if I like that or if it was just lazy writing, I was so hoping Steven would have a “Go inside his Gem” moment like Pearl did so he could meet Pink/Rose ... *and we still never found out what was in the DARN CHEST!!!* 😤😤😤 Meh, it is what it is. Thanks for the reply and stay safe!
Steven throughout all his life put his problems after, and made a decision to help people and push his own feelings if they would make things worse. So then thats fine but then you get pissed at steven when hes finally after saving everyone, becomes a little selfish? Cmon man. Also Im pretty sure NO KID in the entire world would like to go to school, and now that steven is almost and adult and got through his power problems and matured he can tell that he wouldve loved a normal life, but he couldnt get one.
I agree! Mr.Universe and Fragments got me so hyped for the finale and wondering what plot twist would happen next, but we just got this ok (pretty trashy) finale No closure from Pink/Rose to Steven about maybe why he was actually made or something that was in the chest that could have helped him come to terms with who his mom was. We just got him shoving the painting into Lion and just not talking about her anymore. The chest!! I was so excited to see what was in that dumb box but that didn't happen at all. They left it open to viewer interpretation and that's fine.. Corruption scene felt rushed and too fast. Nothing significant really happened to have him transform back, also as you said it does just violate all of the rules of corruption. None of the CGs or anyone else actually had to come to terms about what they did to Steven, they just cried for a bit and then connie grouped them together for a group hug at Steven. Steven's "diamond" form and some of his new "diamond" powers literally make no sense. I get that Steven turned the TV off before but that doesn't equal like broadcasting your thoughts into a device, it doesn't even fit with the theme of Pink Diamond and Pink's powers that were passed down to Steven. It's a shame how they ended the show. S1 is still MVP. And before someone comments 'its because there wasn't enough time!11!!!!' they could have used the first 10 episodes to go into Steven's PTSD and maybe use multiple episodes for Steven's transformation and resolution. And instead of giving us whatever "Guidance" was we could have had an episode where Steven and Amethyst go for the chest or something..
if you took every filler episode out and replaced it with an actually meaningful episode they could have easily made it happen, and that goes for the series as a whole. No one asked for Rocknaldo and other episodes like it, but thats what we got instead of more screen time for lapis and peridot.
The thing I'm most angry about is that we got no closure about Steven's feeling abt his mom yeah it was hinted in ep 3 and 4 in Future (Rose buds and Volleyball) but I felt like it wasn't enough I needed to see Steven's final thoughts about his mom
If the show had writers instead of just storyboarders, it would've worked. Remember the episode where Connie throws somebody to the ground because of muscle memory? Apparently Rebecca wanted it to be an episode about meditating, but had to write a conflict around it. Here I question... Was it necessary to make an episode like that? The storyboarder for that episode was someone from trigger, which is why it looks like the characters are on model all the time, since they just send storyboards to a Studio tha will animate it. And the studio has actually made a lot of good looking shows, but the problem is the crewniverse
@@MillyKKitty I feel like the perfect representation for the crewniverse would be Greg. super sweet and kind people but they have trouble putting their foot down and being stern with people. Im glad they give artists a chance and let them have some creative leeway with the character models but it does hinder the show in some aspects.
They fucking started a conflict, and ended it in 300 seconds. Wouldn’t it have been cool if Steven was a Monster for a few episodes, and everyone had an actual feeling of despair.
Felt like the worm boi was supposed to be another thing. But Rebecca wanted to please fans and decided the worm boi should be Steven. Especially the moving away part.
Back when Future was announced I was like Hell nah that had no chance o being Steven because I thought that we were done with the whole corruption arc (took the whole og show)but even though this isn't really corruption per se just Steven's power reacting to his state of mind and because Future was basically one long mental breakdown I knew by the end of the first half it was Wormy boi was going to be Steven
Wormy was clearly Steven since the begining, same nose, same colours... I think they intended to do it since the start And I think it's a perfect idea on paper ... but it needed more eps
in the original show they did not even take the events that serious. Some of it was even presented as comedy. Showing that these events caused trauma now is just incosistent. Either the events cause trauma and the effects schould be dealt with or they don't. Now they acted like the events did nothing. Steven shrugged of a world ending event with a sudden wedding and playing the ukulele carefree but suddenly now years later these events are causing problems out of the blue?
Yeah, I agree with this. Future wants us to believe that PTSD can actually occur way after the actual traumatic event if you've been hiding your feelings but that's just not the case. It can take time if the event was so traumatizing it provokes denial, but the way it's been portrayed in SU, it's just wrong. You can't just go through something traumatic and basically forget about it only for it to suddenly give you PTSD years later without any warning sign. I know everyone reacts differently but not to such a degree.
The final few episodes had all the right stories, but they was too short to flesh them out. Steven could've been a monster for 2-3 episodes who keeps getting more powerful and dangerous, with everyone including Jasper, Lars and the students of Homeworld and others coming together, setting aside old rivalries and baggages, to help save Steven.
I'm working on a Steven Universe video too, and the fact that the story didn't really go anywhere for five seasons really pissed me off. The story WANTED to go somewhere, but this whole " no violence when Steven's involved" rule is just pathetic.
I try to be understanding with the show since the network seemed to always had something against it and in many instances wanted it cancelled, who knows how much money they might've spent on special guests/VA's specially after the movie, I'm not an expert on that last part but to be fair there's nothing left to do than just accept this is the best they offer with a time limit, and in all honestly this finale encapsulates what SU basically was: have a really interesting and creative concept and ideas -> unnecessary events which only purpose was to generate shock to the audience and never address such problem again -> solve the problem through a non-violent but non effective way -> Leave the resolution vague -> forced scene referencing/making parallels to the first season because everyone can eat the nostalgia crap -> profit.
When first watching future with all the gaps between episodes it all kinda made sense but now after recently rewatching it. The show just sucked. They took 14 episodes to get to the main idea of future which is Stevens trauma. 14 EPISODES!! And the first 10 episodes are just like WOAH STEVEN HAD NEW OP POWER it’s just bad writing. And yeah I agree with you on the point where you said they could do so much more. like the first episode for example. I loved how it started with Steven healing a corrupted gem and showing her around but when it got to the fight with jasper? I would’ve made steven lose to jasper punching him in the face and knocking him out, just like at the end of season 1 when jasper was first introduced. Then when Steven wakes up he gets flashbacks to back then (giving us the sense of trauma) and then giving us a flash of his pink form like him angrily punching a nearby tree or something the looking into a puddle and seeing he’s pink then going back to his normal form. Then he goes back home feeling defeated. There’s another thing and it’s about when steven shatters jasper. I would’ve made it so jasper couldn’t be brought back to life. Like there were already set rules for shattering a gem where you couldn’t heal them it’s basically the gem equivalent to killing someone. And then they just broke that rule too. Also if Steven really shattered jasper and she couldn’t be brought back to life that would be very traumatic maybe one of the most traumatic things he would’ve gone through. There are other points I could make but this comment is getting to long. Thanks if you got this far and this is just my opinion in case any of you die hard Steven fans get offended.
Wagon on Fire same. I couldn't care less about the emotional stuff cuz of how bad they wrote it🙄 the characters were all out of character, many things contradicted stuff from the show it was just a mess
I agree, surprisingly because I normally love the emotional stuff. And when the theory about Steven's mental breakdown started to become popular, I was excited because I expected this arc to be similar to Spinel's, but even better. (For me Spinel's arc is the proof to how the writers can actually do great and impactful emotional arcs when they really try.) And then I spent 10 episodes witnessing Steven having emotional issues, try to get better, get worse, start to get support from friends only for this to disappear the next episode, seek for help, reject help, suffer more and more, then turn into a brainless monster and finally get better thanks to a group hug. I basically just witnessed someone suffering for 10 episodes for no other reason than edge (yes, it's edgy, I said it. If you try to write a realistic psychological arc but end up with something like that, it's edgy, and I don't use that term often) and then it magically got better because the power of love can solve every problem. Are you kidding me. Not to mention how since they didn't want to show us how Steven made the first steps, they decided to pull a three months timeskip. So there's no resolution, that's it. Okay. So for me it's just as if the movie ended with Spinel crying over the realization of what she has become and then the next time we see her is in Homeworld Bound with barely any explanation. That's incredibly dumb.
Thank you, oh my god that ending was so bad , one they build Steven to be op as all hell but then they solve the problem in a few minutes in the dumbest way possible. Two they make the goodbyes jokes or they feel like jokes, like what peridot and lapis said , and the way they animated the crystal gems crying it mostly feels like a joke how the heck am I supposed to feel sad for a complete joke, there’s so much garbage I would say about future that I can’t say here cause I’m typing too much. It’s just so bad
I wish they had done what the Adventure Time crew did; wait an extra year or so and release a limited mini-series. Instead of individual episodes, group them together into 1/2 hour blocks. It wouldn't solve the underlying issues with the finale series itself, but I think the lack of breathing space between the original show/movie and SUF hurts it.
Lol I agree with everything here but can we also talk about how BROKEN Steven was. I mean this man has got to be a top 5 most overpowered characters in Cartoon Network history. This man got absolutely busted because of emotional trauma and mental health?? That’s bad writing because pink diamond was arguably the weakest out of all the diamonds and you mean to tell me that Steven gets so powerful to the fact that even the diamonds can’t stop him? I mean REALLY??? Not to mention that white diamond specifically said when she tried to stop Steven that it isn’t Steven anymore so how the heck was Steven able to come back to consciousness? It would’ve been great to see two battles happening, monster Steven vs everyone and Steven vs pink Steven inside his consciousness. It would’ve been much more emotional and impactful to see how a fight like that turned out. Could have turned out better than Steven vs jasper as that for me is probably the best moment in future cause it was built up right. However bringing jasper back, was just awful. The moment when Steven proposes to Connie and how ruby and sapphire tell him was VERY awkward and very stupid it was like ugh wth are you telling him that makes no sense! The gems are also a shell of what they were, they had barely if not any impact on Steven at all I just think they were pushed aside when it’s always been where Steven can talk to them and this felt forced for them to be pushed aside...WHEN Rebecca sugar comes back to this series cause it’s kinda obvious she will with what she said about giving the characters privacy(which makes no sense your basically saying you want a break lol just say that especially with what happened to the series from season 4 up to now😑). Lol oof.
There's this scene in the SU Future when they show those random moments from the series prior as being really traumatic for Steven but when you watch those scenes in context and then the aftermath you'll notice that Steven was never as much as traumatised. He didn't seem traumatised in the friggin movie but NOW I'm supposed to believe how demaging this was for him. Since when?! Another thing is Rebecca constantly making a very sudden staitement on a character and then never elaborating on it. Like Jasper presumably hating herself. Or Greg being a bad father and Steven being raised in a shitty environment while in the old seiries those topic were never touched upon.
Anyone else find it kinda awkward that literally the last moment we see of Lapis, Peridot, & Bismuth is them uncontrollably bawling their eyes out with Steven? (While it was still a touching scene that highlighted how much they care about him, a lil smile & goodbye from them after their cry session would've gone a long way for giving them a more dignified ending for those 3 characters)
Paper there are different types of relationships, romantic, platonic, abusive, toxic, ect. While Jasper and Lapis' relationship was not a healthy one, it still felt real to me. Sorry if I didn't really explain that 😅
My biggest gripe with Future was that Steven seemed to be devoid of any logic or character that he had in the original series. He made choices that just contradicted his entire journey, even the healing ones like after he returned from Homeworld and fell out with Connie. It was sad to see this new victimized Steven derail completely. I would have preferred to see Steven growing and establishing new connections with other planets. Oh well.
It's out of character for Steven to not tell the Gems what's going on with himself? I disagree. Steven has also gotten older; finally starting to mentally and thus physically change. His room even moved away from the Gems and went from open to another room to closed off on its own. A personal problem can be hard to tell others. It can be hard to reveal a new side of yourself to people you've known for a long time, yet alone your entire life. And he did have info withstraint in previous seasons. I don't think he ever told the Gems about his mom's memories. I think his first time was with Connie about Amethyst's cracked gem/his healing fail. Maybe the second is ignoring Connie's calls in the Full Disclosure song. He even said "no, I'm fine [I don't need to sleep]" when the Gems were on a raft getting Gem stuff below. He even says to Rose in her room that he felt he had to live up to her name. And it's not like the Gems or his dad started a healthy line of disclosure with him when he was little or asked him to ever articulate and analyze his thoughts with them. Not that they'd even know about that, being Gems. While they do support Steven, they don't personally work with Steven to develop himself. He may have even learned this withstraint from the Gems when they witheld Gem info from him.
I hate how steven's powers weren't the issue but only his mental state. Early on it feels like it's his powers influencing him with his trauma eventually playing a part later. Like there was gonna some justification for pink's actions or something. Steven's hair starts resembling hers for fucks sake. But now that we know it's all just because of him then his resemblance to pink feels pointless. There was clearly some rewrite going on.
I think they wanted to turn him into Pink Diamond, because he felt like a bad person and he had conflicted feelings about her, then they probably realized that it would ruin the whole "I'm not my mom" plot.
@@MillyKKitty Yeah it felt like the writers were still a bit indecisive on steven and pink being separate. I get how in some stories the offspring taking after their parents trope will sometimes have the offspring be damn near identical in either appearance, actions or personality. But though the story has shown steven to be similar to pink he isn't a mini, half breed, gender bent clone of her either. I know we don't know or see much all of pink's powers but aren't most of steven's powers shown, hinted or implied to be unique to him? Not abilities passed down from his mom? If so, then his pink form should've been something unique to him as well.
You are one of the very few people I’ve seen who has mentioned Garnet is easily at fault for the whole Steven proposing to Connie thing and how she acted like she did nothing wrong. That irritated me so much but other ranters seem to overlook that.
I actually really like that you made this unscripted, because honestly sort of bitter emotions that these last episodes have caused for a lot of people are so hard to articulate. There are going to be people who make smug videos mocking the ending, but the truth is this that what made the ending has more to do with the way it trivializes our connection to it than it does with the writing itself. I appreciate the candidness and honesty. Congrats on the big video!
Tbh I’m fine with the ending, sure it was rushed, but I still loved it. The Future episode may have been filler, but it was really good and emotional for me. I loved the ending, I am my monster was pretty quick, but I still liked the climax.
I used to like SU, but I gotta admit that I'm not a fan of SUF, especially the ending. It just felt really rushed and unsatisfying, nothing really suprised or amazed me in the last episodes.
THANK YOU! SUF was leading to Steven being Curropted, honestly the last episode should've been 1 hour. 30 min dealing with corrupted Steven 15 min of Steven saying goodbye 10 min of a SUF epilogue with a 5 year time skip with stuff leading to possible comic, video game potential to fill that 5 year gaps 5 min with a possible Lars Of The Stars spin off!
To be honest, it kinda sucks. It’s actually quite ironic that the final final episode next to it is better than this one, didn’t really get surprised at how bad it was. It just feels super rushed and the conflict is super forced
My biggest pet peeve is that steven universe had so many characters portrayed as having ptsd and in itself its a really good thing. Simply because ptsd affects everyone differently and therefore having only one character with that disorder wont represent everyone with said disorder while multiple characters could show how everyone reacts differently to it. But su did not do that, they portrayed them all as turning into toxic people we should forgive (or not) which is really problematic. Yellow and blue were abused and became dictators, pink had ptsd and she physically and mentally abused people, spinel had ptsd and she wanted to kill people, lapis had ptsd and she abused jasper, was a d*ck to peridot, steven and stole the whole damn ass ocean and steven straight up commited murder. I have ptsd and its so horrible to see i was portrayed as a potential abusive person. And the show always say the disorder is an excuse dor what they did (unless we talking about pink for some reasons) and thats its ok. Like my boy steven killed someobe and no one cared,,, excuse me? Edit: the only character portrayed with the disorder that didnt turn out to be abusive was voleyball, and it was great to see a character react to the disorder with self destructive behavior paired with denial. But it was only one episode through the whole show and cant out-weight all the other shit representation. Dont get me wrong, some people turn out abusive because of ptsd and it can be an accurate way of portraying it. But when all your ptsd characters are abusive in a way or another, its just bad representation and problematic.
Tbh there is just a lot of things I notice that displayed moments of bad writing for me. However the one thing that I saw about it that does kill what the last 4/5 episodes of series lead up was when Steven and Jasper had there fight and steven shatters Jasper. Now if anyone like the original ending of that episode. Good for you. However I saw someone did an Alternative version of the ending where Jasper didn't come back in the end, and that to me does something that I think is magical and pushes the show to a different level. "Actions have consequences" The character(s) must always be tested and pushed to a breaking point, it shows how a character will react or how they feel. Now while I feel the episode "Everything's Fine" was actually well done as it shows Steven was chipped away bit by bit, along with impressive acting from the actor. Yet getting to the last two episodes. The series just fell flat. Because Steven didn't entirely feel like it was something I was worried about because I could read the ending of it like a book. I knew that at the end of "I am my Monster" was going to end that steven was back to his human form, he would go to Therapy, and that he would leave. I also wasn't surprised that the Gems were trying to stay strong for Steven even though the way they approached it was off putting. But I can agree that the ending of this just left a anti-climactic taste in my mouth. However all they try to do was just end there show as humanly as possible
I feel like the thing with Greg was handled really poorly just cuz like... first of all, Steven is not as lacking as he thinks he is... or at least not due to something Greg did. for example, Greg made sure that Steven was living in a house instead of living out of his van with him. the gems didn't have a house before... they all came together and built it for Steven. even after Steven began living with the gems, Greg maintained a presence in Steven's life, but he clearly gave up something important when he decided to give up having a home life with Steven. the episode directly after mirror gem/ocean gem illustrates that. and I think there was probably a perception from really early in Steven's life that, because Steven had a gem, he probably took after Rose more than Greg biologically, and thus, he would be safer with the gems than with Greg, because they would probably know more about Steven. yes, it would've been best to bring Steven to a doctor regardless, but if we're really gonna get into it, I don't like that this is a flaw that the writers made Greg have... at least, not to this extent. after a while, it just starts to seem negligent, which is not what Greg is at all in any other way. I could see him waiting too long to do it initially, but like... not _this_ long? also, at the beginning of the series, Steven is what, 13? the first 13 years of his life were so carefree and unremarkable that the show literally doesn't include them. which is all the more reason why Greg might not have caught on very quickly, or known what to do, when things in Steven's life started getting heavier. Steven just had a really drama loaded year or two here, and that is perfectly valid, but to blame Greg for not integrating him into human society enough would be totally ignoring those 13 years, wherein human society was the only society that Steven even really knew existed. and on that note, I feel like in order for that SU:Future episode to function in the way that it did, Greg's emotional intelligence had to get majorly nerfed. like, usually he's someone that Steven goes to for that exact quality, but here, it was just absent. how tone deaf do you need to be to keep extolling the virtues of your decision to leave home at a young age while your son is becoming more and more visibly distressed by the topic of conversation? at the very least, Greg should've been able to slow down and explain what was actually wrong with his home life... _without_ framing it as a defense of his decisions as a parent. this Greg is all "leaving was the best decision I ever made! aren't you glad that my hands-off style of parenting gave _you_ so much personal freedom right off the bat?" but the Greg I would've expected based on all of his prior characterization would've been more like "hey, I can see that learning this about me is really upsetting you. I had my reasons for leaving... life in that house was not a good experience for me, and I may be guilty of trying to subvert that at the cost of certain things that would've made our lives easier. I may not have done everything right, but I am here for you, even if things are difficult... _especially_ if things are difficult." because that feels closer to the truth. especially given the emotional payoff they were shooting for at the end of the show. and then the car crash at the end... what even _was_ that?!! like, Steven gets upset enough that he crashes a whole vehicle (quote from Greg in like, the second episode(?) of the whole show: : "I _live_ in that van!!!") and he also says to Greg that his problem isn't that he's a gem, it's that he's a Universe... which should maybe be kind of hurtful to Greg? and Greg's reaction to this is like "omg Steven, are you okay? you are? good, then back to what I was saying..." and he just keeps talking in the same way that _just_ set Steven off so badly. contrast this with the episode where the hand ship came to earth and we first saw Jasper and all that... I think it was Last One Out of Beach City? Greg is driving the van away from Beach City, and Steven gets so upset by the thought that the Crystal Gems were facing a threat without him, that he punches the dashboard and activates the airbag. and this actually gets Greg's attention. and then Steven asks his dad to let him go help. so Greg has a choice: does he force his son to continue to evacuate for his own safety, or does he let his son make his own decisions about how much jeopardy to put himself in? and Greg chooses to let Steven do it, because it clearly means a lot to him... but you can see Greg struggle with the choice, and the aftermath of that choice. where did this Greg go? it's as though SU:Future doesn't know what it wants to do... does it want these characters to be flawed in the way they relate to Steven, and oblivious to his problems? do they want them all to be fully developed, emotionally competent people who have arrived at the end of their character arcs, and have no more growing to really do? neither is working because these characters developed into people who should definitely notice if something is wrong with Steven, and who should definitely be better at attempting to help him. but even their attempts to help are weak, or shallow... even when we know they should be able to do better.
The importance of her character was to show the rehabilitation of the recently discovered corrupt gems into era 3, and she was used to show what's new in the world since we last saw it.
@@MJD3rpI see how they needed a newer gem. Still it is bad taste to me making her background character in episode 2. Like "fuck you" "we do only Steven".
Switch the length of the cluster arc and the diamond days arc and there I think blue yellow and whites “redemption” would probably be believable but I would’ve preferred they stayed like the irredeemable bad guys for the end game
I think everyone's forgetting this is in Cartoon Network, a kids show- Aren't they supposed to tell or give kids a lesson that violence is never the answer? I mean if Steven was in adult swim they could probably make such a better ending because I do agree the ending was kinda blep.
Amazing video and I agree with most of the points you make, but, I hate that no one talks about how blue diamond’s song, if not interrupted could’ve shown the audience that the diamonds had had at least some off screen development and also maybe could’ve fleshed out the diamonds and home-world more. Also, not enough background characters getting screen time by themselves and the ending didn’t feel exciting to me. I was enjoying the ending a little bit, but, the scene where everyone blames themselves is where I think it started to go more downhill. Also the last episode felt rushed, they could’ve explained more plot holes and mysteries.
I feel like the build-up for "I Am My Monster" was brilliant. "Everything's Fine" was a brilliant episode and the way they showed his resistance to getting help was great but after the build-up, I just felt empty. Monster Steven never scarred anyone, it felt like there were no stakes and they're still many questions that were unanswered like Bluebird, Mean Lapis, *THAT FREAKIN' CHEST* and whether Monster Steven was corruption or the same shapeshifting in Steven's Birthday. At the end I just felt empty. I think it would've been better if they had a few more episodes. And Steven never faces any consequences for trying to shatter White Diamond, shattering Jasper and crashing his dad's van. Then after 2 months he just got a factory reset to "Happily Ever After" Steven. So although I was okay with the ending it still wasn't perfect
yeah same... i felt like the ending went by soo fast and i feel like if they built it up like normal corruption or more slowly like everyone was kinda hoping for (like gradual transformation to the wormy boi) then it would have been way better tbh..... and would be better for like tension and all that..
Alright, here we go. I'm going to say it. The Return and Jailbreak was the peak of Steven universe. Leading up to these episodes we had a healthy mix of beach city and gem stuff. After jailbreak the show came to screeching halt. Suddenly NOTHING was happening. Suddenly all the mysticism and fun that made steven universe, steven universe, started to get peeled away. We got the Steven bombs. The steven bombs was 90:10 ratio of nothing happening in beach city while we waited for the actual continuation of the story. There were so many episodes that didn't advance the story at all, it was maddening. Then when we FINALLY got back on track, it was over in a matter of minutes. Remember the cluster? Remember Malachite? All of it was over in a matter of minutes, when we could have had real build up to it. But nope, here's an episode about Steven in people's dreams. Or an episode where Steven is Lars apparently. Remember when we thought we were going to get some Lars of the stars episodes? The episode that ended JUST as they were about to do something exciting? That's borderline what the rest of the series felt like. I didn't think it was possible to rush the story more than diamond days, but they did. It sucks, I love steven universe. I watch older clips/episodes and still find myself really into it! But knowing what the show finishes off as, it just doesnt deserve it.
"After jailbreak the show came to screeching halt. Suddenly NOTHING was happening." Are you forgetting about season 2 being about Peridot's redemption and Steven's guilt over what happened with Lapis and Japser, as well as the conflict of unforgivness between Garnet and Pearl?
Nicholas Nieves I agree, without the hiatus’s, it’s crazy how that pink diamond was revealed to be rose and white diamond was reformed within just a few episodes
@@justinstewart9291 You're definitley right about that. I took a glance at the episode lists and remebered how much development Peridot got. I think it'd be more accurate to say that the pacing started to fall flat towards the end of that arc, when Malachite returned and both that problem and the cluster were solved in a matter of two episodes. Season 2 was good, but it was also the start of episodes creeping in that had no real point. Both in that they didn't advance the story or have much going on. Episodes like rising tides/crashing skies, Onion friend, Love letters, sadies show. I still personally feel Jailbreak was the peak, but season 2 was also strong for sure. It was more so season 3 and after the pacing fumbled.
As much as I loved the ending I agree and honestly I would’ve preferred if the corrupted Steven drama lasted 2 or 3 episodes like they can’t keep resolving a problem that fast and I’m disappointed that characters that needed closure didn’t get it example they wasted Jasper’s character when she out of all the characters deserved a redemption arc did we get that NO! Isn’t we have her get killed come back and now calls Steven her diamond and not have any interactions and so on I still wish her and Lapis got back on good terms despite all that happened and I still wish Pink got closure I figured that she and Pink Steven would be involves in Steven turning back like I thought Steven and Pink Steven would have a falling out and I wish we got a scene of Steven fully coming to terms with his mother and forgiving her and I find it a bit BS that NO ONE got consequences Steven literally shattered Jasper and tried to shatter White and yet he got off Scott free same goes for the diamonds despite that they literally caused mass genocide killed thousands if not millions of planets and other life forms including there own kind and yet they got off Scott free and there Actions weren’t even addressed and I thought Steven would call them out not there BS like I thought that would happen in Homeworld Bound and I’m surprised that Connie was the 1st to call them out I’m not ranting I’m just explaining my issues with the finale Either way I loved the ending but it was flawed
Peridots redemption arc literally was the only redemption arc done RIGHT in Steven universe
TheSpaceBetweenOurHouses ok
Because it's the only redemption arc there.
And if they weren't planning to give Jasper a redemption arc you might as well kill her off.
Indeed but hey at the end of the day Steven universe is well steven universe. It not good it's not bad, but it's just ok.
disappointed but not surprised 😔
Everyone rushed steven universe thats probably why. Do not argue with me plz
Run along folks. No argument here.
@@malaxnmange5034 And that's what makes it bad. Think about it. Why would someone settle for an ok show when they can have a good show? Why settle for mediocrity when you can have something better?
If I remember correctly, didn't Rebecca Sugar herself said? "There are no one-off characters."
"Well I'm gonna tell you right now, that's a complete f___ing lie." - AVGN
Sad but true. I thought Holly Blue Agate and Emerald would have a bigger impact than they did. They seemed important.
Lord Twinkie I was looking forward to see emerald so much😭😭😭
Lord Twinkie same with Bluebird, Mean Lapis ect
And I thought they’d the era-3 rebellion route started by gems who hate the new changes Steven bought to Homeworld and want to kill him for it
But nope we didn’t get any of that even though that could’ve gave past characters a time to shine
Yeah you’re right because he didn’t have any physical scars or horns when he transformed back, ergo it’s not corruption.
@@InbetweenEntertainment Definetly
Garnet mentioned, “as long as he thinks he’s a monster, he’ll stay one.” Much like the time they said that “he’s old because he feels old.”
In my opiniin every gem has it's(or her) own kind of corruption
As a person that is dealing with anxiety
and is followed by a therapist I found this ending pretty disappointing.
Then the movie happened, and the direction shifted from “Steven’s power is giving second chances to everyone” to “No, actually his mom was a true monster after all and did die to leave her problems, everything is played 100% straight without the magic, and here’s an episode with a medically realistic PTSD diagnosis."
Like.
Diskuli I hate her too.
Cristian Martinez me too but Rebecca Sour is too ARROGANT FOR THAT TO HAPPEN! REBECCA SOUR, WE CAN’T BE AROUND YOU RIGHT NOW!!!!
Connie sounded so preachy with that speech. Like I already hate her, it just made me angry and annoyed.
I dislike how you can SEE the potential, but nothing happens.
That must be how Garnet feels a lot of the time
I was thinking,,,, he didn't even faced the consecuences of his acts (shatter Jasper and trying to do the same to WD) and my only explanation to this is... b e c a u s e h e i s a d i a m o n d

Why can’t Cartoon Network give shows a 24 minute time crunch? That would give time to the show to flesh out the world, and the characters.
The have to make money with commercials and also Teen Titans Go exist
T3a’ Cup I know right? That would be so much better!
Plenty of shows are 24 minutes and still have commercial.
Thank you.
What makes this worse is that Steven Universe isn't the only show to suffer from a rushed ending
@@blandon93 The theme of the movie was Change. Future was Steven struggling to actually learn that lesson too.
The ending didn’t even make me cry like I expected. I cried more over the fact that the series was ending with a bad taste in my mouth of Steven universe future.
I think the only good moment in SUF is the Steven vs Jasper Rematch . At least to me , that was more Suspenseful than the easily predictable ending.
Agreed
Fun fact:
In Mr Greg, Greg offers Steven to go to school but Steven refuses.
I quote, “I could take you to college. But I’m with the gems all the time”
Box Fish I was just thinking about that...I listened to the album before seeing the episodes so with that quote in mind, the drama with Greg felt like such a reach😬
I mean, he was only 14 when he said that. What 14 year old wants to go to school if given the choice?
Yeah and that whole car seen made it seem like Greg didn’t care about the fact Steven was fighting monsters and space tyrants because “he was free” when they clearly showed during the jail break arc Greg wanted to get Steven away from that danger, with Steven deciding to head back, and afterwards he nearly had a heart attack hearing about what happened to Steven. It’s one of the things I really hate when a story turns a character into a complete 180* or an idiot just for the sake of a story they want to do regardless if that character is nothing like that
Cause screw story continuity.
But still he doesn’t consider a therapist he knows that Steven is fighting for his life EVERY adventure yeah none of that was traumatic right Greg!?
This whole Steven universe Shippuden series made me upset with how the writers handle things. It seems to me that they develop interesting conflict but don’t seem to give impelling solution.
(Also how come Steven never went to the doctor but somehow has a license to drive? I mean don’t you need a physical and Id for you to get a license?)
Also how did the cluster get unbubbled to hold back monster Steven? Once gems are poof and bubble they can’t reform( I know they were unbubbled to hold back the diamonds but I still need an answer on how they got unbubbled)
Shattering lost it purpose in Steven Universe Super bc somehow the diamonds and Steven can fix shatter gems so the gems are never in real danger I guess.

That's all it's ever been, just a bunch of directionless wasted potential
[ S p a c e ] how did those characters have bad handling?

When never see gem society get fixed. It just happens off screen. So much wasted potential.
"Climax"
@Sir Embrum49 The Great Moth yes, unfortunately.
My problem with the ending is that it doesn’t feel like the end to the show, it feels like it’s the end of a small arc and nothing more
I want to die yeah exactly
You're right ! Change Your Mind and the movie felt much more like an actual finale.
Honestly it should’ve ended with the movie especially with the message it left us with
Sad we didnt get to see stevens grandparents
Owl Leep Honestly would’ve like to see their reaction towards Steven.
JoLynn TRUEE I would have loved to see that 😔
They deserve to at least meet him and Greg needs to get over the bad blood with his parents he’s got a dream job they can’t control him anymore
The key to understanding how bad this finale is is coming to terms with the fact that the crew are NOT good writers. They are all talented people with good ideas but they do not know how to make them consistently cohesive
I deadass agree with you. I was so hype for monster steven but the way they ended it it was too fast
Mikaru I honestly would’ve preferred if it lasted 2 or 3 episodes
I also thought there would be an era 3 rebellion and any rebel would try to kidnap monster Steven and so the cast goes and save him
lets not forget that Steven, Sweet now vegetarian boy Steven, killed Jasper.

Steven is a vegetarian, with his cheeseburger backpack and hotdog bag
Steven is vegetarian
-Later is seen eating a peperoni pizza with Amathyst-
@@Lixarxvi i mean he literally said he's been a vegetarian for a month in the episode "snowy day"
Idk man, I wouldn't call it "just some teenage angst and anxiety".
The show went downhill for me at the moment Rose was revealed to be Pink Diamond
@@slothful2039 Making Rose Pink Diamond was really really forced and it wasn't even surprising considering people had theories about that since the second season
@@slothful2039 Let's not even get started about dat ending (change your mind) it was completely rushed and a gigantic mess.
And even if it wasn't, I don't think redeeming the Diamonds would be a good idea at all
T-posing Pingu A lot of Steven Universe theories became actual twists tho. Like Garnet being a fusion, Steven turning into a monster, etc.
First of all, thumbnail and title game is *on point*
Second of all, loving the unscripted rant with music in the background. It's hard to explain but the whole video just had an amazingly cohesive atmosphere.
That’s a stupid ending for the actual series
For me I feel this show had no major consequences to speak of that every thing can be Wish away with power of love friendship etc.l know that what the show was about but personally wanted to see a arc with Steven and the gems deal with other intelligence forms life because the gem empire clasped that to me could had been an interesting plot instead of dealing with Steven teenage angst and taking out on everybody .I don’t know personally after all these years the ending of the show was a let down to me at lest.I don’t I just wanted to get my thoughts out.Great video by the way
THANK YOU you write the show with consequences you can’t just power of friendship them away cuz of plot!!
Yeah it was just his powers reacting to his state of mind he felt like a monster he became a monster Sapphite said it herself
I would have liked to see him slowly corrupt and I wish Hey used the purple instead of pink for the design.
@@Neo-ln4be But his gem is "PINK"
DarkPulsaterLiteGear that’s true but in a darker setting like in the intro it could look purple
- Lame composition (where are the camera angles?)
- Conflicting tones at every corner.
Onto the movie:
- There was far too many songs.
And then, of course, Future just bought up the rear to burn the rest down:
- Steven has become Jake Skywalker, and it makes even less sense than it did in The Last Jedi.
@燈籠草Here it is:
Where do I begin with the daughter of Zim and Toph Beifong?
@燈籠草
Speaking of Lapis:
Lapis was introduced as a character that had serious beef with the Crystal Gems, enough to lash out at them and Steven for trying to prevent her from leaving; maybe she thought they would put her in another mirror.
Steven could have been easily made influenced by Conne's mother to become a doctor or therapist since He needs to help others, I mean He can heal anything, but nooooo, let's make him keep wasting his time
The ending left me completely desensitized
I stopped watching the show due to the bad writing as a writer myself it makes me mad how they are professional writers and they half ass it
A shocker the writers are just storyboarders, unlike in Owl House where they have like 5 writers per episode
I kinda wanted to know more about Pink diamond’s reason for leaving everyone behind.
Another Way I agree and it’s sad that Pink didn’t get closure I wish the finale had Steven truly forgiving his mom and coming to terms with her
Yafavakuec 123 Yeah, they basically made her the bad guy and called it a day. No more exploring pink and her motivations, let's all just assume that she's evillllll
Erika Keka which is still BS
Erika Keka
What makes It weirder is because that is part of reason why Steven was having so much trouble. He was afraid of become like the other diamonds especially his mother causing him to turn pink at the slightest mention of her name. I feel like the box should’ve not been opened until the final episode to Steven universe future. The box should’ve had all of Pink diamond’s memories and a letter explaining everything to Steven.
Another Way That would have been nice... 😞
Garnet said that corruption is a tear in the fabric of the mind but I wish they Would have explained it better and it would have lasted longer
Thank you.
So many questions left unanswered & fusions that we want to see never happen, very disappointed with this ending not to mention its anti-climactic
but hey we got Rocknaldo
William Shenk is this a joke bc I hope this is
@@padparade Thats the joke, we could have got more episodes with lapis or peridot or character building but instead we got episodes like "Rocknaldo" and "your mother and mine"
William Shenk good point. I guess I’m just used to the filler in su to the point where I might as well forget about it.
We found out in season 5 that rose was Pink Diamond, meaning she was in love with her master the entire time and only her death would actually cause her to move on to become her own gem (that's what the movie said)
Crewniverse claims that there were hints about Rose being Pink Diamond, but they were so vague they could have really turned them into any plotwist.
Steven spent the series getting others to talk instead of fighting but when it matters *he clams up about his own problems?!* 😒😒😒
Also you mentioned how Steven could’ve done online classes? You’re totally right: Steven could’ve done this but Greg had already mentioned this in the Mr Greg episode when they’re singing their opening duet of the episode:
“I could put you through college?”
“But I’m with the Gems all the time!”
“ ... I could buy you all the finest courses online!”
So Greg mentioned it, but neither he *nor Steven* followed up in this suggestion!
Also when you mentioned Steven being sick? I *think* the episode you’re looking for is “Warp Tour”, Steven gets a mild case of hay fever during this episode when they’re in a field of flowers. Other than that I don’t think he’s ever shown signs of *human* sickness (if we’re counting the whole Corrupted Kaiju Steven thing as an illness)
Thanks for a great and stay safe (I wish we’d had more of Pink-Godzilla-Steven too!)
Laters KittyCraft 💙🐱💙
Corrupted Steven for several episodes? In my opinion they should only have 2 episodes, i think more than that would be a bit much.
videogameflumingo okay fair enough, but we only for Kaiju Steven for 2 seconds of one episode (when he started corrupting) then the majority of the following episode ... and they saved the day through *The Power of Hugs!* ... Really not sure if I like that or if it was just lazy writing, I was so hoping Steven would have a “Go inside his Gem” moment like Pearl did so he could meet Pink/Rose ... *and we still never found out what was in the DARN CHEST!!!* 😤😤😤
Meh, it is what it is. Thanks for the reply and stay safe!
@@LadyLeomon I would've loved a "go inside Steven's gem" moment. I wanted to see what was going on in Steven's head while he was a monster.
I agree! Mr.Universe and Fragments got me so hyped for the finale and wondering what plot twist would happen next, but we just got this ok (pretty trashy) finale
No closure from Pink/Rose to Steven about maybe why he was actually made or something that was in the chest that could have helped him come to terms with who his mom was.
Milly KKitty yes!! like where did the writing even go? I swear so many things happen only for plot convinence...
They fucking started a conflict, and ended it in 300 seconds. Wouldn’t it have been cool if Steven was a Monster for a few episodes, and everyone had an actual feeling of despair.
The beginning felt more like a "I'm sorry I hate this" instead of a rant. You sounded shaky as me during a presentation.
Steven wasn’t corrupted, he just shapeshifted.
I think they intended to do it since the start
And I think it's a perfect idea on paper ... but it needed more eps
With the time the animation process takes, there's no way it was changed to match the fan theory.
@@rjd-kh8et yeah future was in production since 2018
I feel like Rebecca did the same thing with the “rose is pink diamond” theory too...
in the original show they did not even take the events that serious.
I actually really like your idea. I'm starting to wish that this is how the story went.
Look, i prefered Future when it was light-hearted and funny. The second half low key ruined it for me
Wagon on Fire same.
(For me Spinel's arc is the proof to how the writers can actually do great and impactful emotional arcs when they really try.)
And then I spent 10 episodes witnessing Steven having emotional issues, try to get better, get worse, start to get support from friends only for this to disappear the next episode, seek for help, reject help, suffer more and more, then turn into a brainless monster and finally get better thanks to a group hug.
Steven is 16, has no formal education, probably gonna live on his dad's money and has no work experience and he thinks he can live on his own
Thank you, oh my god that ending was so bad , one they build Steven to be op as all hell but then they solve the problem in a few minutes in the dumbest way possible.
Still better than Star Vs. the Forces of Evil's finale.
Justin Stewart True
Literally every finale tops that one lol
Justin Stewart I prefer the SVTFOE finale, mainly cuz I expected Steven Universe to be better and was REALLY let down:(
Amen to that
Erika Keka same here for star and neffsie (the creator) says she did a great job
Lol oof.
He's like Jiren
“The show and it’s relationships are really organic”
*shows a picture of lapis and jasper*
Though the main issue is that they wrote it in a way that did feel like out of character
Also the line "why do I feel the need to be needed" hints heavily on the purpose Diamonds have
@@MillyKKitty Yeah it felt like the writers were still a bit indecisive on steven and pink being separate.
It was okay, but they should of got more time, maybe a 'I am My Monster' Part 2?
I used to like SU, but I gotta admit that I'm not a fan of SUF, especially the ending. It just felt really rushed and unsatisfying, nothing really suprised or amazed me in the last episodes.
Pink Diamond was done very wrong.
Maby if they made iam my monster 22 minutes it would not felt rushed and I didn't even cry in those episodes
THANK YOU!
SUF was leading to Steven being Curropted, honestly the last episode should've been 1 hour.
30 min dealing with corrupted Steven
15 min of Steven saying goodbye
10 min of a SUF epilogue with a 5 year time skip with stuff leading to possible comic, video game potential to fill that 5 year gaps
5 min with a possible Lars Of The Stars spin off!
@@soraxstacy1477 no I just wanted a 22 minute episode of iam my monster and the future will stay the same
The show doesn’t have any actual writers
"Actions have consequences"
The character(s) must always be tested and pushed to a breaking point, it shows how a character will react or how they feel.
Steven nearly kills a gem. He turned into a monster, and nearly destroyed his city. And what was the resolution/climax?:
*HUGS*
Oh and one more thing. What about Cherry quartz? The first character in the Future we get introduced to does NOTHING important to the plot.
I think everyone's forgetting this is in Cartoon Network, a kids show-
Aren't they supposed to tell or give kids a lesson that violence is never the answer? I mean if Steven was in adult swim they could probably make such a better ending because I do agree the ending was kinda blep.
Ikr
The show is aimed at middle schoolers and up not toodlers they can handle anything if it's actually written properly
I think it’s because they had to fit corrupted Steven and the epilogue in 20 minutes flat so they had to cut corners
I’m glad that this series is finally getting the criticism it deserves, but it’s six years too late.
I fucking hated 99.9% of Steven Universe Future
Suddenly NOTHING was happening."
Are you forgetting about season 2 being about Peridot's redemption and Steven's guilt over what happened with Lapis and Japser, as well as the conflict of unforgivness between Garnet and Pearl?
(You can use audacity to remove mic static)
As much as I loved the ending I agree and honestly I would’ve preferred if the corrupted Steven drama lasted 2 or 3 episodes like they can’t keep resolving a problem that fast and I’m disappointed that characters that needed closure didn’t get it example they wasted Jasper’s character when she out of all the characters deserved a redemption arc did we get that NO! Isn’t we have her get killed come back and now calls Steven her diamond and not have any interactions and so on I still wish her and Lapis got back on good terms despite all that happened and I still wish Pink got closure I figured that she and Pink Steven would be involves in Steven turning back like I thought Steven and Pink Steven would have a falling out and I wish we got a scene of Steven fully coming to terms with his mother and forgiving her and I find it a bit BS that NO ONE got consequences Steven literally shattered Jasper and tried to shatter White and yet he got off Scott free same goes for the diamonds despite that they literally caused mass genocide killed thousands if not millions of planets and other life forms including there own kind and yet they got off Scott free and there Actions weren’t even addressed and I thought Steven would call them out not there BS like I thought that would happen in Homeworld Bound and I’m surprised that Connie was the 1st to call them out
I’m not ranting I’m just explaining my issues with the finale
Either way I loved the ending but it was flawed
Omg finally someone who agrees with meeeeee
