    I could hear all of the other instruments and Geddy’s vocals in my mind as you played it, so I know you got it down right. I’d forgotten that I used to play this one back in the 80’s. I spent so much time transcribing and learning it from a Rush song book that had no tabs. I wish I still had that book. Wow, so long ago. Maybe I’ll get back to my roots and use your lesson to relearn it.

    This is Rushes Ten Years Gone. Just amazing arrangement, amazing playing by lifeson, Lee and peat with incredible writing by Peart and singing by Lee. This is what defines Rush as being great. They have a lot of awesome tunes but a lot of songs that are a little to cutesy and not Rocking enough. This album and this tune especially is Rush as their finest. Unbelievable and a song clearly played live in the studio given the feel and interaction between the musicians. It would be impossible to capture this timing and this inspiration with a click and everything played in isolation as a overdub. No way. This is why they can play their tunes live so effortlessly. This is a band where the whole is greater than the sum of its virtuoso parts.
    Incredible recording and certainly in the top 10 of all time but probably high up on the list

Your playing is very good and I like the volume pedal for the intro versus using the volume to swell up and down with! Saw Rush six times and still couldn't figure out what Lifeson was doing. Well Done Sir!

      Ya know, as I was working on this on my own, I kept wanting to do this on just the E&A strings, and sliding up to the 10th fret of the E and doing my box up there. It sounded tighter with the fretted notes vs open. Do you do it both ways? Made me smile when I saw Alex doing it this way too. Do you alternate for whatever mood you're in? I do that all the time. I've seen Page doing it all the time. It's like "now he's playing the D up/down here!" I guess it keeps them entertained when they're playing the same tunes night after night.
      Does not matter in the slightest. It's always about what comfortable for 'you' the player.

    Hey Six String Corner, I don’t want to be that guy but there is an error in this lesson in so far as how Lifeson actually plays the song in specific the riffs at approx 2:08 of the play through is actually played in the 5th position. If you watch Alex he does those crazy long stretches/slides on the A and low E strings, he doesn’t involve the D string at all. The tonalities are very different even though you are playing the same notes. It’s way easier to do the way you lay it out and I played it that way for 20+ years until I watched him closely in amble video a few years back and it’s obvious he doesn’t play it in open position . Otherwise killer job dude !!

    • @TheSixStringCorner
      @TheSixStringCorner Год назад +1

      Nah, yer not that guy. To be honest there are also other Rush songs that can be played a little different than he does. Most of it revolves around him not using his little finger in most solos and riffs. That has been frustrating for me to watch. It's just how he learned to play and he mastered it. For me, I'm all for easier ways to play. As long as it is the same notes, I'm good

    • @GMHG777
      @GMHG777 Год назад

      @@TheSixStringCorner yeah man you are right about that Hadn’t actually thought of that but there are subtle tonality differences in the way he plays certain things. For exp playing the open chords up and down the neck during the part before the verse starts we here you descend from the 12th fret down the neck lots of peeps out the low E on that that’s definitely not right because you hear the open E drone plus lots of peeps don’t fret the E note on the 9th fret of the G when doing the opening riff as the spaciness swirls they use the open high E and that’s clearly not right as you can hear the difference because that high E rings out too long if you don’t do it the way Al does. Thanks for not taking offense ! Very solid lesson and great playing man !

      @@GMHG777 thanks! Hey no problem! If I could tell you how many times I had to change how I played certain parts of Rush songs because of someone pointing it out, I'd be here all day! thanks for the feedback!
