    Thanks for this tutorial. I downloaded Pro tools and Reaper and with all the searching and watching I've done I feel Reaper would be my best bet as it seems to be more stable and is more streamlined. The ability to tighten up a track rhythm wise, and the ability to pitch correct are the two important edits I am looking for. I have the Adobe software and That has it's strong points as well. I subscribed to your channel because I like the way you explain things and show the before and after , along with your suggestions. Keep up the great work!

      Thanks for the comment! I definitely think Reaper gives you more options out of the box, especially when you add on the ‘SWS extensions’. I’ll admit that Reaper can be a little overwhelming to get set up initially (project folders don’t organize in an intuitive way for users coming from other DAWs)
      I’ve got another video I recommend for people getting started with Reaper to at least make sure you know where the menus and settings are that set up the way your files are saved:

  • @PunchDrummer
    @PunchDrummer 2 года назад +2

    The solution is to create a pseudo "Tempo Map" by installing SWS Extensions and using "SWS/BR: Move closest grid line to play cursor". Assign a shortcut key to this custom action (I use "." (period)). Set your grid to ~quarter notes, move the play cursor to the beginning of the transient closest the beat 1 of each measure, and press the shortcut key. This will make your click fall on that transient. You can do it on each quarter note, etc., or skip a series of bars that stay on beat. You will end-up with a variety of (closely matching) tempos, and the rest of your tracks and MIDI will quantize to the grid that now matches the tempo of the audio. It sure is a lot easier and more accurate than splitting and chopping-up your audio. :)

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  2 года назад

      Certainly a good way of doing it. I feel like this is something you can only do once every recording has been finished, though, so you don’t have someone trying to record over a bpm that changes every 4 measures.
      Like the SWS stuff though :)

    • @PunchDrummer
      @PunchDrummer 2 года назад

      @@dnxlko I'm glad this helped! You can also move the grid to the Edit Cursor, or even the Mouse Cursor. I think the difference between this and the video is that the video techniques maintain a constant BPM by adjusting the audio to fit the grid, while this technique adjusts the grid to fit the audio. Personally, I had an audio track that must have been recorded with multiple takes, and the time varied significantly-enough that by the end, the click was way off. This technique helped me build my MIDI (i.e.: Drums, and others) to quantize exactly as needed without distorting the exquisite audio (vocal) track. I guess the good news is that there are many ways Reaper can help produce great music. :)

      Admittedly, I didn’t know a ton about stretch markers until after I made this video. Hey what do u recommend me to do for bass lines where notes overlap eachother? your example's cool, but it does not work for longer bass lines.

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  11 месяцев назад

      Sorry for the delayed response, for overlapping stuff, you'll probably have to go in and manually split those out so you can do as much as possible in an automated way.
      Let's say you have a verse that is consistent, single notes, and the chorus is more complicated and needs manual editing. Split the verse from the chorus, then automate the verse.
      Other option is to look into 'Stretch Markers', which are really useful when splitting is not an option. Hope that helps!!

    Hello there, thanks for the tutorial, very useful. But one question please. When this operation is done, do we have to re-glue all the parts ? I think no, but what could happen if we do

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  4 года назад +3

      Hello! Glad it was useful :) If you're happy with the result when it's finished, you can glue the parts. Just be sure that there aren't any extra pops or clicks that you didn't notice. You could also group the items (Highlight the items you want to stick together and press "G") if you want them to move together as a unit, but don't want the permanence of a glue.
      Either technique works, and I tend to use gluing so I don't accidentally change the length of a grouped item.

    Probably due to updates, the content in the diologue boxes no longer match. When I select your recommenced settings the reduce splits quantity is frozen and you can't set a value for it and the split button is grayed out so the second function/method appears to be usless. While experimenting with the new boxes to try to get it to work, Reaper crashed. Also the second method does't work for anything composed in MIDI because there are no transients. I can play a guitar in rhythm becuase I've been doing it for 20 years. Drum pads I'm new to and that's were I need help.

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry for the delay!
      Not sure why things would have been frozen, unless it didn't have an active item to target, or something. Not sure but if you can recreate it, please let me know!
      Ah, for the drum pads, you can go into the midi editor directly and quantize from there. Try double clicking on the midi item and it will pull open a new window for you, then you should see some options at the top. One of them would allow you to quantize, but that's the place to go for MIDI!

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  4 года назад +1

      Hi! Sorry for the delay - for some reason I’m not getting notifications. Is your problem happening after you quantize to the grid like what I cover in the video?
      Two things to try:
      If you select View > Master Track, do you see a light blue line with points on it? That would mean that your tempo is changing. You can delete any points on that line to keep your tempo the same.
      If that doesn’t work, you can check your project settings (File > Project Settings) and make sure your “Timebase for items/envelopes/markers” is set to “Time”. The second option “Timebase for tempo/time signature envelope can be set to either Beats or Time, that won’t give you the problem you’re mentioning.
      If that doesn’t solve it, I’d need to see a screenshot to really tell what’s going on. Happy to help out over Instagram @yourlocalbassoonist

      3:58 has all the settings on screen - It's not default settings, and the action was set to Split selected items. You could also do this by creating stretch markers if you wanted to go that route. I think that's a little less confusing to manage, honestly.

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  Год назад

      Yeah, sometimes it’s more than just this fix. Are they seemingly random clicks/crackles? You may try a couple things:
      - turn the sample rates / bit depths in reaper and your system audio settings to the lowest reasonable settings (44.1k 16-bit)
      - try restarting the computer after you change your settings
      - try increasing the buffer size to some larger number in Reaper (I can’t remember if that’s an option in WASAPI shared mode). I usually use something that is a power of 2, but I don’t think that’s required.
      - if you have any effects on tracks, try turning those off and seeing if it makes a difference. If it does, you may need to *freeze* your tracks after recording to essentially print the effects to a new audio item.
      It’s hard to say what the problem is when that starts happening, I remember going through multiple system restores before I found that it was my motherboard that needed to be replaced, so hopefully you don’t have to do that.

      I think if I was doing live performance or using more hardware MIDI instruments, I’d probably use Ableton as it integrates much easier with MIDI. Reaper is good with MIDI, but has a steeper learning curve than Ableton, IMO.

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  3 года назад +2

      For #1 and #2, I need some more info to figure out exactly what you’re trying to do, but I’ll take a stab:
      It sounds like you just want to click and drag in the middle of the item to move it left or right. You can change the size of the item by grabbing the right or left sides (if you hover over the left and right end of each item, you’ll see your cursor change to a different icon).
      Can you let me know if you’re used to working in other DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations like Pro Tools, Ableton, Cakewalk, etc.)? If you’re coming from ProTools and you’re looking to emulate the time selection behavior you get in that software, I can help out with that, too, but want to make sure I understand what you’re after.
      For #3, I know exactly what you’re talking about:
      Head to project settings (File > Project Settings) and make sure your “Timebase for items/envelopes/markers” is set to “Time”. The second option “Timebase for tempo/time signature envelope can be set to either Beats or Time, that won’t give you the problem you’re mentioning.
      This is something that catches a lot of people I’m teaching off guard at first (despite me encouraging them to change the setting right away, haha) but this is a good setting to locate, in case you ever *DO* want your items to stretch to the grid.

    Why is cross fading necessary? Would the items sequence sound unnatural without it? Thank you

    • @ReaperTutorials
      @ReaperTutorials  4 года назад

      It’s more useful for the first method. The default method of splitting would put a fade out/fade in between the two items. It isn’t always noticeable if you split at a quiet point, but sometimes it leaves an audible gap. It has happened enough times (specifically in podcast editing) that I’ve just turned on crossfades by default. It’s not 100% necessary but it’s good to know that the feature exists

      When you say “line” do you mean the audio line? Pressing S will split the item so you’ll have two items on either side of the timeline cursor (the bright greenish blue vertical line that shows where your audio is going to start playing back).
      Once you split the item with “S” you can then move the two items independently, so try splitting one, then clicking and dragging one on the left or right side. They might both be selected by default, so you may have to click on just one of them first before trying to click and drag to move it.

      Not sure if you're coming here because you're learning Reaper or wanting to shit on it, but I'll assume you're here with good intentions and are curious how you might handle stretching a note to fit.
      Three levels of difficulty:
      Does an individual note need to be generally longer? Slice around it, hold Alt on windows (probably option on Mac) and drag it out to time stretch the whole thing.
      Do you need to reshape the articulation? Add stretch markers at the attack/sustain/release points and drag them as needed, update the pitch shift algorithm and adjust the stretch marker fade size so it doesn't sound like a butt.
      Do you need to reshape a *LOT* of articulations? Use the dynamic split method, but assign stretch markers at the transients instead of splitting them. Then quantize stretch markers to the grid.
      ---------
      I set my option to 'Add Time Stretch Marker at Cursor Position' to Shift + W and it's really quick to add them where I need and move things around.

    Reaper Daw... Software score = 90/100
    Help Files and Support score = 10/100
    Overall Value Score = 20/100
    recommendation = use the free version and save up for a DAW with better support
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
    DOES ANYBODY GET OFFENDED WHEN YOU CONTACT MICROSOFT OR ANY OTHER C0OMPANY... AND YOU ASK THEM FOR HELP, AND THEY REFER YOU TO A FORUM, OR A WIKI PAGE, OR A **** YOU TUBE VIDEO.....FK THAT !!!!!!!!
    Trying
    to find a GOOD answer in a forum is like standing in the parking lot at the car dealership and asking all of the other customers if anybody knws how to bleed the anti-lock brake system.
    Reaper help files are very.....wordy..... but with NO DAMN LOGIC...and even the help file use jargon that is not explained ..ANY....where else in the pdf..... as in.... I SEARCHED .
    . AND THIS SMARTASS ASSUMES THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE REAPER,,,,,...WAV AND DRAGGING IT .........DOES.....NOT......WORK
    And there is...... NO .....damn..... "how to"....that explains this step by step....THAT WORKS
    And YES I have the g*ddamn 400 page pdf..... and NO there is no step by step
    For easy simple stuff.... Reaper is fun...... but for something that is not intuitive..... the reaper manual... and therefore...... REAPER ...... SUX...
    awwww..... i used cuss words.....REAPER ....WASTED MY TIME.....which is worse ?
    A judge never uses Harsh words as a penalty but often requires you to surrender some of your time.
    Reaper is wasting my time.
    I'll just sTop wasting it, bight the bullet and buy a real DAW with REAL help files
    "turn the grid off".... HOW !!!!???? actually I can do that...
    but then the next actions....ZERO G&DDAMN HOW TO.
    Let's land a plane !!!..... its easy....... intercept the loc, then one dot before GS, gear down, final flaps not later than 1000' agl in vfr and brakes per perf chart.
    What I just said was absolutely accurate..... but I goddamn dare you to try it.
    Reaper's manual is long....wordy.... and useless.
    And most of theae damn you tubes.... the person MIGHT know what he is doing.... but NONE of the people are INSTRUCTORS...... and NONE took the time to lay the explanation out in a LOGICAL lesson plan format......they ARE therefore wasting my time

      I’d recommend some videos that will help you learn how to navigate Reaper, but it sounds like you don’t want that.
      If I can help out, let me know, but sounds like you just want someone to yell at. I’ll let you do that, too.
