As a dungeon master of many years and campaigns, very skeptical that Griffin's FIRST TIME was this campaign. He did a FANTASTIC job, whether or not he had all the time in the world from a Max Fun salary...it was still an incredible, genius level first DM campaign. Bravo, Griffin. But also how many times did you do it before this time
The genius part about these songs is that the first 3 have this beautiful ,almost whimsical quality to them that create this image of something just playing or doing something it thinks is right or harmless, but then the final is just filled with enough malice in the words and distorted voice that it kinda flips the sensation on its head.
hehehe88 well I would assume so, the mother just wanted to see her son again, she didn't want the crystal kingdom to even exist. All of those souls are just straight up angry, so I would expect the souls to have malice in there words
Looking back, one thing I always wondered about this arc is: what if the heroes had decided that the lost souls were right? The offer was on the table, what if they had agreed to join them in tearing down the laws of nature and remaking the world? I _know_ Griffin is a good enough improviser that he'd have done something amazing with that...

I feel like this is the biggest danger of the Grand Relics in all honesty - as soon as I listened to this episode, I started thinking about ways to sort of make a compromise between the two sides, like using the Stone to create thousands of mirrors to the Astral Plane to be distributed to churches and other places of worship so people could communicate with lost loved ones. That's when it hit me that this is a scenario where neutrality is almost required, because the amount of good that can be done with a Relic is so great that any truly "good" person is going to try to use them, and only people who have either experienced firsthand the sort of terrible loss that can come from good intentions or those with a more neutral outlook on the world (Balance, anyone?) can really be suited to their disposal. Lucas was wholly of good intentions, and yet he almost destroyed the world just trying to get his mother back. Imagine the destruction he could have accidentally wrought he'd tried to do something on a larger scale. I also really like how Griffin very clearly points out the inherent unfairness in how the system of natural laws work, particularly in life and death.
I think it's kind of childish to be honest. Everyone, always, is subject to laws they didn't make. They're selfishly destroying the natural order, ignorant of what consequences it could bring, because they refuse to follow the rules that govern the universe. Would you destroy the concept of gravity just because it stands in the way of you flying?
@@ncook8362 I think they mean that she had no idea that she was breaking laws of the Universe. The people that try to escape once they are there should be punished, but she was never told or warned.

I love how this song is, just telling the mom's story in this weirdly hypnotizing way that only people who have listened to the full chapter can understand.

Now I know how the gang felt when hearing Yohan's first song. Amazing job Griffin, you really are my best friend.
I just realized. The singer managed to look past the omniverse/universe. The lost souls were full of rage at "laws they didn't make" and wanted more than their existence. In the end, the souls were assimilated into one giant skeleton. I think this was how the Hunger started.
Jessica S that’s what John says towards the end - that he saw the purpose, the reason we were all here, and the laws that bound us, and it was too cruel to bear, so we wanted to change it. That’s what the Hunger is. It is vengeance
Green Gal22 yeah I mean like, post set up from HTBG, that makes so much sense. Relistening to Balance really cemented CK as like, basically the central pillar around which a lot of things revolved
But wasn't the whole stolen century arc wayyy before this? Like, the hunger was already "kept away" because the squad created the seven relics. In crystal kingdom they're recovering one. It's way past the beginning of the hunger. John had the same train of thought as Lucas's mom had over a century later though
@@finnevitable This is after Stolen Century, and the Hunger is already out there, but Legion is essentially a second Hunger. Had it managed to claim the Light of Creation (of which it already had a seventh), it might have even gained the same level of power.
I'm so heartbroken that I'll never get to hear each of these haunting verses for the first time again in context. Particularly the second verse where a virulent crystal drops into the previously safe room from a rift in space, consumes it and the music comes and you realize there are no bubbles of safety in your world anymore. The music signals the approaching end of the world, not as an oncoming war, but simply your new master ceremoniously taking her place as the decider that all things as you know them will eminently end.

This is the turning point when the plot became amazing. The earlier arcs were good (the first was rough until the very end), but this is when the overall plot started having good hints of epic direction to it.

Lost to the dark I drift alone,
Now I’ve returned beyond the shroud,
Ever to reign upon my throne,
Here in my Crystal Kingdom.
I saw beyond the omniverse,
Far past the places we should see,
But for my vision I was cursed,
Torn from my home and family,
Lost to my Crystal Kingdom.
Saved from the darkness by my child,
Locked in a cage of glass and steel,
But my true love remains exiled,
Beckoning me to break the seal,
Into my Crystal Kingdom.
Kept from our children, lovers, friends,
Subject to laws we did not make,
This is where separation ends,
And souls of the lost will come awake,
Here in my Crystal...
Lost in my Crystal...
Enter my Crystal Kingdom.
