  • The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple built on the Acropolis hill of Athens, Greece.
It is a temple made of white Pentelic marble and was dedicated to goddess Athena, the patroness of the city of Athens.
The construction began in 447 BC after the orders of the Athenian statesman Pericles. The architects were Iktinos and Callicrates, while the supervisor of the sculpture decoration was Phidias. The construction was completed in 438 BC and the last sculptures were placed in 432 BC.
It is a building of doric architecture, combining features of the Ionic order too. The sculptures can be divided in three types: the metopes, the pediments and the frieze.
Most of the Parthenon sculptures were taken in 1801-1812 by Lord Elgin and are now in the British Museum while most of the rest are in the Acropolis Museum.
The entrance to the main temple was from the east main door. Inside stood the gigantic statue of goddess Athena Parthenos (Virgin). The statue made by Phidias was created in gold and ivory and stood around 12 metres high.
The Parthenon is considered to be a symbol of ancient Greece, democracy and western civilization.

It's all I can do, because I honestly thing that that dream of having it back the exact same way is not possible, unless it's an exact recreation of stone, plaster, paint, gold, ivory, etc. because some of that stuff warps and deteriorates over time, and two thousand years is just an extremely long time, you know?

If there’s a building that represents mankind’s abilities, this is it. Personally, I think it’s the most important structure ever built, PERIOD. I’m glad to see much of the restoration that’s currently being done. But it’s not going to go nearly as far as it should. This is one of several historic ancient buildings that should be COMPLETELY RESTORED, obviously with as much of the original materials as possible. Additional materials should be quarried from the same locations as the original. By restoration, I mean FULL RESTORATION, ROOF AND ALL. We need to ensure that this priceless building will last thousands of years into the distant future. If we don’t do something, eventually, 500-1000 years into the future, our distant descendants will be looking at a pile of rubble. That would be a huge travesty to humanity itself.
As for those who want these structures to be left alone? For what purpose? So they can continue to deteriorate into dust? That would be history lost when it didn’t have to be. In the distant future, today’s reconstruction would become part of the Parthenon’s history.

Thank you! In order to create a 3D reconstruction it takes a huge amount of effort so as to have a historically accurate result. Since Ancient Athens 3D mainly focuses in the city of Athens, unfortunately Hagia Sophia is not in the near future plans, although I would agree it would be most interesting. There are many things known for the monument which allow reconstructions in many different historical phases. I think that you can probably find a few reconstructions if you search on the internet.

Not the same. The original Parthenon has a slight curve everywhere you look, it doesn’t have a single straight line, making each part unique because it can’t be placed anywhere else. It also gives the illusion that the temple levitates from up close, that’s why it’s magnificent, god like I should say. And because of it’s uniqueness it’s extremely hard to restore it. The one in Nashville is a good copy but it will never have the same analogies and curves the original has.

It would lose it’s value, such stupid ideas have been declined decades ago and no one should take or build another piece of the Parthenon, it is our legacy and our duty is to keep it safe, not to reconstruct what our ancestors did. Plus even now it’s extremely difficult to rebuild Parthenon exactly like it was so it would mess things up even more. If there was a way of bringing back the actual builders maybe we would reconsider it. But since we can’t do that, no one will lay hands on Parthenon

'Taken' (by Elgin) being a cute word for 'plundered', much like the wholesale ravaging of the Greek nation today perpetrated by those who declare debt dependency, Sustainable serfdom, structural liquidation and the predatory salvaging of sovereign treasure to be salvation.

More like LIBERATED by Elgin. (The Acropolis was an Ottoman fort; the Parthenon having been seriously damaged when the Turks turned it into a powder magazine which got hit by a Venetian cannon shell.)
....And the Greeks complain about having to repay their debts as well!
Greece is poor because of its predatory socialism and ridiculously high tax rates (causing its wealthy citizens to take their money abroad).
