So far ahead of their time that they'd be a huge cutting edge hit this very day if they popped out of a time machine exactly as they first appeared to the mass of spuds in 1981.
Your point is correct, but even more correct than you thought because Devo actually formed in 1973. In 1978 their first album was released and they appeared on live network TV for the first time (on Saturday Night Live). But again, your point is absolutely right.
Nah, they'd be ignored even worse today, for a few different reasons. And it's not like our popular music has reached such a high level compared to the 70s.
Dove was on first, then X, followed by Devo's headlining set which is up on RUclips, search Devo Live: New Years Eve, Long Beach Arena, 1979 FULL SHOW!!!
my life means nothing if not for coinciding with this amalgamation conglomerate coagulation sedimentary sentimental seductive rock music that is Devo. DEVO!
Agreed. Unfortunately now they are aged and somewhat... stout. Their last album was fucking fantastic and they still have incredible energy but they just don't got that young sex deprived sex chic no more. But who gives a shit about that when you have the music?
My first DEVO show was Saturday, December 19, 1981 at the California Theater in San Diego, California. "DOVE...The Band of Love" opened. What a fucking mind-bending experience...!!!
I saw them at the Long Beach Arena New Years eve 1979. The message was "Stay Awake in The Eighties Spuds, It's All About to Happen". They were right and it's keeps happening. My favorite song that evening was "You Gotta Serve Somebody".
I was there, up near the top. My pockets full of plastic confetti, I rained it down on the crowd all night! Word is that X was pissed that DEVO was getting paid twice, once for DOVE, that X got revenge by eating all the craft services food, leaving none for DEVO. Saw Wild Man Fischer at the gig!
Yeah, X opened up for them...actually Dove opened the show and it took me a while to figure out it was actually Devo. Great show at the Long Beach arena!
not likely. sounds more like the Long Beach Arena, and they were much more likely to have a pro film crew out in So Cal than some dirt floored hillbilly hoedown joint out in bum fuck east Jesus fer Chrissakes !
Coincidences abound! I got turned on to "Reflections from the Firepool" back in '89 or whatever it was that it first came out. I also have a live VHS tape that they had out around that same time. Really great stuff.
They are their own warm up band and get paid for it.
Hey they play twice they get paid twice i see no problem with that
Like PRIMUS
I saw this on dvd back in 2009. Had no idea they once had this alter ego. Once again, these guys were WAY AHEAD of the curve.
was there at the 1979 show in Long Beach, DOVE, X, DEVO combo, ground breaking!
I wish DOVE released a full length LP of inspirational hymnals
We love DOVE
i have always loved mark mothersbaughs silly voice
idk why hes just special to me
Thanks for posting this, I feel born again now!

If the spud fits, wear it!
thank you for posting, you've made a brit DEVO fan very VERY happy
These guys were fucking brilliant. I wonder how many people in that audience had no clue this was DEVO.
This is absolute genius!
-: Either from the left or from the right, the satire came thick and fast. Brilliant Artists for the ages.
Timeless.

it does sound like the LBA
Thanks, spud!

Thanks Cltus! Praise Bob!
This is an extra on the Devo Live 1980 dvd.
alan myers wow!
No kidding
“The human metronome,” as Jerry Casale still calls him.
Agreed. Unfortunately now they are aged and somewhat... stout. Their last album was fucking fantastic and they still have incredible energy but they just don't got that young sex deprived sex chic no more. But who gives a shit about that when you have the music?
Awesome, thanks for posting.
We’re close to that all auspicious 666 likes O_o
Shrivel up was included on the Boards of Canada Societas X Mixtape. Now go forth my son and spread the love of Jesus.
Om born again now
Yes
I like these versions more than the album versions.
I saw them live and ALL the songs are better than the album versions.
Jimby I
it cuts out 2 songs into the set! wtf
Awesome profile pic. Did you get that done professionally?
Nah i did it myself, had no idea i could do it in MS paint
Looks like the video just restarts at that point with no sound.
Awesome :)
Praise Jesus and Praise God. Two separate beings. Born again new citizens.
It's not you or your device, it's the video repeating without audio after 7:00. A great 7 minutes of archive it was, though, thanks for posting it.
Yes

I love how synched the guys were when playing, just awesome.
Probably the best live band of all time. No one before or since has done this. DEVO is STILL the future.
I saw them at the Long Beach Arena New Years eve 1979. The message was "Stay Awake in The Eighties Spuds, It's All About to Happen". They were right and it's keeps happening. My favorite song that evening was "You Gotta Serve Somebody".
I was there 3rd row center and Gotta serve was also my favorite from Dove,,,hellava gig✌️😎

Such a wide array of outfits as well as styles of music; simply incredible imaginations.
In Shrivel Up, Mark had a few Steve Martin moves at the end.
"what will the left hand do now - while the right hand go to work"
Half the of the video has no audio!!!!!!!!!!!!!! booooooooo!
wow !!! This is good and really bad at the same time. It's like you want more but you really shouldn't want more of this.
So....is there a D0VE 2.O?
They move like mutants
bye Bob 2...
Saw this at Long Beach Arena, Dec 31, 1979. Great fun!
what a band. nothing since
Oh my god, I didn't think anyone could be sexy in a double knit leisure suit, but I've been proven wrong...
this is the M-80 music festival in Mpls in 1979. Walker Art Center, I believe.
omg! Im from minneapolis. Too late though :/
Actually it was at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. A dirt floor open shelter used for events and sports. I was there.
not likely. sounds more like the Long Beach Arena, and they were much more likely to have a pro film crew out in So Cal than some dirt floored hillbilly hoedown joint out in bum fuck east Jesus fer Chrissakes !
Long Beach Arena NYE 1979
The Walker Art center backed it. The location was the Field House at the U of M.
Has a surf rock vibe to it 🤘
Sound went out
these white boys got some flava!
Brilliant talented musicians .we are DEVO D.E.V.O !
So Devo could have taken the path they did or went on the path of Christian rock. Interesting.
Ha ha! They chose their mutations wisely, don’t you think?
@@GrantTarredus Just a bunch of spud boys really. Looking for that real tomato still to this day. 🍅
Why does the end at about the 7.45 minutes?
Coincidences abound! I got turned on to "Reflections from the Firepool" back in '89 or whatever it was that it first came out. I also have a live VHS tape that they had out around that same time. Really great stuff.
I'll never get over how they walk in place during praying hands lmao
Does anyone know where I can find the full footage with audio? I'm assuming it came from DVD extras, but which DVD?
I believe it's from the Devo Live 1980 DualDisc. The second half of this video is just a repeat of the first half without audio, for some reason.
Dancing chickens
I love this concept
I DID go to White Castle and buy em by the sack after being at M-80
killer post cletus..hehe cletus..what a nut.
bless you, my son
Yeah !
So cool.
fantastic
Devo becomes ELVIS but way cooler.
where's the audio???
God is love, jesus was buddhist monk
None of the albums did Devo justice as a live band. Not even Are we not men? Not even close.
