  • In this video, I show how to play chords using ONLY the BASS and COUNTER-BASS rows. I didn’t include this topic in previous videos because it takes too long to demonstrate the method clearly.
    MULTIPLE ERROR ALERTS:
At 3:25, I SHOULD have said “C” diminished button, NOT “G” diminished button.
At 3:38, I SHOULD have said C “MAJOR” seventh, NOT C “minor” seventh.
At 12:52, I SHOULD have said A “SHARP,” NOT A “flat.”
At 21:22, I SHOULD have said A “MINOR,” NOT A “flat.”
C AUGMENTED (C+) chord: There are two fairly easy ways to play a C+ chord using only the Bass & Counter-bass rows/ranks:
    (1) C bass (pinkie) + E bass (index) + G# counter-bass (pointer).
    (2) Ab bass (pinkie) + C bass (index) + E counter-bass (pointer).
BLANKET APOLOGY-that is, for this and all previous videos:
I sincerely apologize for the multitude of “spoken” and “performance” errors. I am an excellent writer, but I simply can’t, for the life of me, speak well. When I was in grade school, I had serious comprehension problems and could not speak coherently. I don’t see how on God's earth I even made it through high school. Maybe my parents paid off the principal. Who knows?

This is what I have been starving to know for 5 years about the counterbass and bass rows, which I try to run up and down, and can barely do it. I have tried to understand the positions, the relationships of the buttons, and I just started to find the scales. Learning cords will help me. I am so clumsy I can't find the chord buttons.
I pick up my accordion, knowing that it is a weapon. I have no mercy. I even add drama to the way I hold the accordion and move in exaggerated ways and frown and stare as if I know what I am doing. Thank you so much for this. Oh my goodness, I played that Heart and Soul song on the piano with my dad many times. I am going to have a lot of fun with this. I am going to put the goats to bed and get started tonight.

    That's great; thanks for sharing!
I think most of this is not really useful for me with a 72-bass with the exception of playing in certain keys but it's still worth knowing about!

informative video. With slight variation, this is how I am now able to play in all keys with a twelve button bass, piano accordion, with major reeds removed and replaced with equivalent to counter bases for C through A, and G sharp and D sharp replacing BFlat major and F major.

You refer to your Atlas as an inexpensive accordion. The ones I've seen seem to be well-made instruments and decent quality. I can't find much info about the brand online though. Do you know anything about Atlas? Thanks for your informative video.

    • @scalephrase
      @scalephrase  6 лет назад

I know next to nothing about the history of the ATLAS brand. I do know that the woman from whom I bought my Atlas was taking lessons in the early 50s (with my accordion) so I assume that the accordion was built anywhere from, say, 1949 to 1952. When I say "inexpensive," I mean that the REEDS, at best, could be considered FAIR to GOOD quality. My accordion tuner/tech died last year, but before he left us, he showed me the inside of my accordion and explained everything thoroughly. He compared the reeds in my Atlas to the reeds he that made BY HAND (using superior European material).
I don't mean to mislead anyone regarding the OVERALL quality of the Atlas. Some of their accordions (e.g., the full-size LMMH models) DO have HIGHER quality reeds. (I have seen pictures of these models, on the Internet.). Reeds aside, my accordion--which is OLDER than I am--is everything that I am NOT: high-quality, handsome, and in excellent shape!. I LOVE it! It is what some would call the "stroller" or "lady" size, which is fine with me, because my back can't tolerate too much weight.
      Thanks for watching!
