    Nice video and some beautiful images that appear to be very sharp. You make a good case for the MFT format for those of us who like to travel light and can't afford to spend a fortune on gear. I hope Panasonic will continue to invest in the G9 and MFT now that it appears we may have lost Olympus. 👽👍👍👍

    Very clear sound, smooth and very articulate delivery of commentary, fabulous shots/footage, stunning colours, intriguing birds, terrific editing -- what's not to like. Thank you, Mr. Goodall, for a a most enjoyable and magical experience. If you ever happen to be in New Delhi, India, when the silk cotton trees are in bloom, you'll find the fleshy red flowers with their heady aroma attract a variety of birds such as Brahminy Starlings, Mynahs, Purple Sunbirds, Green Pigeons and even the odd hawk, no doubt in search of a quick snack. I have shot all these right off my balcony at a range of about 20 - 40 yards with a humble Nikon Coolpix P510 at full 1,000mm / 2,000mm digital, ISO 100; the little camera, with its laser sharp lens, far exceeded its design parameters! I can just imagine what your G9 and Leica 100~400mm lens will do!

    Thanks Andrew for sharing top shots and video clips; the Woompoo Fruit Dove was worthy of the climax. I have a G9 with a 14-140mm lens; would this lens enable me to take birds and other wildlife shots? Hope your answer is 'yes'. I'll go looking for the coral tree around Hervey Bay.
    Mike in Oz

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  4 года назад

      Hi Mike, the 140mm lens will be good for larger birds that are not too far from the camera. On this video for example, some of my wattle bird shots were taken at around 100-150mm, but they were just a few metres away. ALL of the honeyeater shots were taken with the zoom all the way out to 400mm, and a lot of those shots have also been cropped to bring the birds even closer...but they are smaller birds and mostly taken from a range of ten metres or so. So you will find it will be pretty good as long as the birds let you get close to them, but not really powerful enough for 'serious' bird pursuits.

    Amazing stuff, and beautiful too. Does the animal recognition mode on the G9 work at the 400mm length, or do you not use it? I have a G9 and am about to buy the 100-400mm lens... immediately after watching this video in fact!

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  4 года назад

      Yes the animal recognition works on the big lens, but I find it is a bit hit-and-miss. For birds among branches and flowers as seen in this video, it would focus on the flower as often as it focuses on the bird. Animal recognition is good in simple situations like a dog running on a beach, horse in a paddock etc., but can be problematic when there is a lot of competing background.

    • @carlpasha
      @carlpasha 4 года назад

      @@naturesimagephotography Many thanks for that, much appreciated. My order is in! I'm greatly looking forward to the the extra reach, and experimenting with the various focus set-ups offered by the G9. All the best.

    What do you reckon the sweet spot aperture would be on this lens? I see you shoot wide open at 6.3! Would stopping down be a bit sharper? cheers

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  3 года назад

      I find the whole 'sweet spot thing' a bit irrelevant. If I made the aperture smaller I would have to sacrifice shutter speed or ISO. There is no point taking a shot thinking it will be sharper at F8, only to find it is blurry or noisy. The lens is sharp enough for me with the aperture wide open and I would only consider reducing aperture (an occasionally do) in very bright light.

    HELLO Andrew
    Can you tell me how far away from the birds are you?
    The next camera that I'm thinking of purchasing is your set. I have been trying to find videos of someone using this set up and showing the difference from them to the subject. Not having any luck.
    Can I also ask Can the Leica 100-400mm superzoom lens be manually focused by hand?
    Ianb

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  2 года назад

      Birds in this video would be ranging from about 8 to 15 metres away. And yes the camera can be used with Manual Focus. Also if you switch focus on the lens to manual, but have the camera set to AF, you can use both.

  • @laurentyarp514
    @laurentyarp514 2 года назад

    I find it difficult to shoot birds.
    They usually fly away from me when I have the 100-400 mounted on the G9. What I find the most frustrating is that some gently sit down on a branch nearby just after I swapped lenses. Frustration and despair... :)
    Then I will get another camera body so that the 100-400 is always ready for an impromptu shoot. It will be a GX9.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  2 года назад +1

      There has to be some challenge, otherwise nobody would bother doing it! Having two bodies is a good idea though, so you are ready for anything.

  • @systemanaturae105

    Hi Andrew. I have the G9 camera and an older 100-400mm lens I bought when I was using my old GH4 cameras. The zoom ring and motion on my lens has always been stiff and jerky - in particular much worse on hot days or when I am overseas in warmer countries. Do you know if Panasonic have sorted out this problem ?? And if so is it possible to have my lens “upgraded” ?? Or have the newer 100-400mm lenses addressed this rather irritating problem. Thanks. Great video clips as always

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  4 года назад +2

      Hi, I haven't heard about any change or upgrade to the design. I have had mine about 8 months and I would call mine 'firm' but not stiff and jerky. It is difficult to zoom smoothly while shooting a video but I rarely do that anyway. So long story short it has not presented a problem for me. I have had some people report the same experience as you, others who say it was stiff at purchase but got better with use, others say it is not a problem. So honestly I don't know if there has been a design change or if some people are just unlucky...the same way two people can buy the exact same lens but find one is sharp and the other isn't. Sorry, I know that's not much help.

    • @systemanaturae105
      @systemanaturae105 4 года назад

      Thanks Andrew. Guess I will either have to live with the zoom issue or maybe check out the same lens in a shop to do a direct comparison. Always the option of buying the same lens if the zoom action is better. Or wait and see if Panasonic intend to bring out another lens as a replacement. The zoom issue only becomes a real problem on a hot sunny day or in hot countries when the black plastic must expand causing difficulty in turning the zoom ring. The answer would be for Panasonic to bring out a pro version made from metal but this would inevitably result in an increase in cost. Keep on shooting and posting your clips.

    Tell me please, are you photographing hand held or with a monopod or tripod. I use the same G9 plus 100-400mm leica lens. However because of being in a wheelchair I am a bit disadvantaged. I switched from Olympus em1 mkII to the G9. I have heard that it is best to shoot hand held, but if using a monopod or tripod, to turn off the lens stabilization. Your thoughts and advise is appreciated. cheers ( a fellow Australlian)

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  3 года назад

      I would be switching the stabiliser off if using a tripod. With a monopod, the weight is supported but the control of the camera is still very much done by hand, so I think you would be best to have the IS switched on for monopod. This is my best guess, I can't speak from experience because I always shoot hand-held with the 100-400mm.

    I have a question I have been a Nikon shooter for years but due to life happening I have to find a lighter camera and glass then my Nikon's I have been looking into this one but I'm lost since I do shoot more action and my favorite to do is bullriding and and likes like tha and alot of time it's in more bad lighting. Would you recommend g9 . I love my Nikon and glass but it become to heavy du to something that happend but micro forth system feels like a mystery to me

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  4 года назад

      The camera is a pleasure to use and great for action. It is so easy to operate, and the super high speed modes are incredible for making sure you don't miss a big moment. Autofocus is fast, the camera is very responsive...I honestly love using it.
      Two downsides to consider though...
      1. The smaller sensor means you would not expect to produce giant high-resolution prints from your images. This is not an issue for most people since few of us print large prints these days.
      2. The higher noise level at high ISO might bother some people. Most cameras you can shoot pretty well up to 3200 ISO...with M43 cameras 1600 ISO is about as high as you normally want to go...although noise reduction software can work miracles these days.
      So I recommend this camera with all my heart as long as you are able to live with those two issues.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  11 месяцев назад +1

      If you like the features then yes, it's still a great camera. .The AF is not up to the standards of the latest generation, but that's really only an issue for video. If you shoot mostly stills then that's no problem. The pre-burst, animal detection AF and near-shift / far-shift focus are all really handy for wildlife photography.

    I have this syndrome buying camera gear
    my best pictures were shote on my a77 ii and old e-3
    Then i bought em1 no better pic
    A77ii was much better
    Then i got the fuji x-t3 and the fringe nd adapter for my plethora of canon glass. Fuji kit lens are better and lighter i love this camrea but hate the menus
    So good by fuji image quality is not every thing and i have 2x hands its way to small.
    good buy fuji and Hello
    Panasonic G9 my son had this camera and comming from Olympus this camera menu was a piece of cake.
    It will be here next week and i have from the dec 18-30 off work to get to no it.
    I know it has lower resolution but the new firmware up date for the high resolution mode looks promising it can freeze motion
    I have mostly panasonic lenses
    12mm,42mmf1.2, 12-35mm 35-100mm, 45-200mm,
    laowa 7.5mm
    An old omd 135mm f/2.8 excellent portrait lens
    Time to sell all my canon ef and x lens and x-t3
    Sould i get the panisonic 50-200mm
    Or the 100-400mm
    Big Decision to make.
    I shoot mostly sports

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  4 года назад

      I wish I had that syndrome. Unfortunately it's a syndrome that needs to be supported by a budget to match. The choice of lens would depend on what sort of sports you are shooting and how close you are to the action. For a football game the 400mm would be way too powerful if you were standing at the edge of the field. But from 50 metres away in a stadium it would be the preferred choice.
