@@ArtIsRight Hey Art! Your channel is the best for comparisons by far. Should have 200k+ subs in no time. Can I ask your advice? Incredible and comprehensive review I ever need after spending almost 2 weeks figuring out what to upgrade to!!! I'm using MBP 13" 2019 Corei5 and thinking about upgrading to M3 pro. However, I cannot decide whether I should pay extra $200 for 12/18 + 36Gb ram/ 512Gb or not. As a pro photographer who has to reach deadline as soon as possible and have watched this video, I think I will go for M3 pro 11/14 + 36Gb ram 1TB to use for 4-5 years and I think it will definitely pay of itself. Thank you for your thorough comparisons. Recently discovered your channel and it’s fantastic. Just a note, from the description and at the start, I thought you were initially talking about the actual base/lowest spec and priced MacBook Pro 14” which doesn’t really have a pro chip and only has 8gb Ram. I know you wrote the cpu/ gpu specs but I didn’t even take note of them - just read ‘base’ and assumed you meant the 8gb Ram version. Perhaps it would be a good idea to write or say “not the m3 pro with 8 gb ram that costs $1599 usd”. I think some people may be completely unaware of all the different m3 machines & importance of all the specs- specifically the Ram.
Thank u for this. Only thing i would say is i wish it was the same size as battery and performance could vary because of thermals etc. but still a great video
marginal at best, I would say don't over think it. I also made the argument that the bigger one that's supposed to be better is not performing that much better at all. That is pretty much telling you everything that you need to know.
Great review. Really detailed. Maybe 14 inch M3 pro is better value in a way but I wanted a 16" M3 pro because of screen size and space black finish. I didn't then consider 14 inch M3 Pro. The M2 pro was a very good model for my Mac mini so that highlighted the value proposition of the pro chips for me. I so some light photoshop and graphic layout work.
Best testing video I've seen so far would've loved to see more about the Max. And graphics performance on games but I realize that probably isn't what you focus on
28:24 Do you think the 4 extra GPU cores on the top spec M3P chip would make a bigger difference if you were to play more intensive AAA games (I plan to install virtual windows and install AAA games in it)?
Art as always we HIGHLY Appreciate everything Will you ever be testing the M3 pro 32 GB versus the M3 Max base that’s the next jump up between the two levels and we need to be able to see if it’s worth the extra money to jump up to With real world testing with LRC and Photoshop? Levels between previous model, and next model with allow us to decide whether it’s worth the price jump
Understand how about the base 16 inch M3 Pro versus the base M3 max head to head with LRC and Photoshop? Did you show that in your last video with charts and if so, head to head what benefits?
Hi ArtIsRight - I have seen lot of RUclips channels but your approach to analyze multiple configurations is awesome. My needs are pretty simple - I do financial modeling using excel with data tables, macros and formulas which are volatile like - offset, lookups etc. I don't multitask..just safari with 2-3 tabs, Apple Music and teams for calls and pdf. I intend to buy MBP-M2Pro-12C (8C+4E) with 16GB or MBP-M3Pro-12C (6C+6E). Not sure which one is good..I think having more P-cores will help. Can you please advise ? Thanks a lot. Manoj
Hi Art, another great video! I have a question I work in event photograpy with a sony a7 iv maybe a sony A1 for later, I wanted to know if the MBP 16 M3 max 14cpu 30 gpu 36gb 1to would be suitable for Lr and Ps use?
@@nwwy I wanted to go for the 16/40 48gb RAM but the price in Europe (+600€) doesn't really justify it, especially to save a few seconds on export. I don't really care, on my MBP 16 M1 pro 32gb 1to I haven't had any slowdowns due to the ram or the beach ball, so that should do it.
Fly to an American state with zero sales tax, like Alaska, and try to get an Education discount. It's like a free holiday, and you will save more even on top of the price of the flights. M3 Max can be £1000-1500 cheaper than the UK / EU that way. @@mathieuceccarini1841
Hey, great video. What’s better? A 14” 11/14 M3 Pro with 36gb ram, or a 14” M2 Max with 32GB ram. My main concern is temps. I want the fan running as little as possible
@@ArtIsRight i bought the 14 inch m3 pro with the upgraded 36gb ram yesterday by the way :) now just anxiously waiting for it lol thanks again for this video!
Is it possible that the 16” screen has an effect on performance that makes the comparison not quite apples to apples (I.e., has a speed drain for the larger screen real estate?)
Do we really need to upgrade the unified memory to 36gb in the M3 Pro14" base model, incase we use it for running tensorflow and machine learning algorithms most of the time ? Please help me decide.
Same with the video yesterday, your charts have "13MBP M3", and should they not read "14MBP M3"? I get for the older laptops the "13" was applicable, but the M3 does not come in a 13".
When you show all the graphs, it's hard to see the two reference systems your testing amongst all the other systems. I would do something to highlight those so they're more quickly obvious at a glance.
I makefull hd editing videos, doing zoom meeings, using Canva, after effects, premire/final Cut while using the web and want a good battery. Do you recommand the 11/14 and 18GB for me?
Great! This will definitely be interesting, also in comparison to the M3 Pro and maybe even the good old M2 Pro. That being said, take your time, not sure how healthy your pace of pumping out those videos is. ❤ @@ArtIsRight
Firstly, thank you Art! What a deeply considered, useful analysis and presentation. I’ll be getting the M3P 14” 36GB 1 TB. My question is about 11 vs. 12 cores vis a vis future-proofing: the difference doesn’t seem worthwhile now, but for those of us who want to keep this machine for 5+ years, might we see a more tangible benefit to 12 cores later? Or is the difference in speed for tasks likely to be essentially the same as now? (Also, will the fan be any more or less likely to kick on depending on number of cores?) Once again - huge thanks, and really appreciate your presentational ways and the kind intention with which you offer your work!
@@ArtIsRight Thank you! And a whole heap of virtual tour photographers will love you for that. There are over 15,000 registered Google Trusted photographers around the world who probably would love to see PTGui Pro in the testing line up as is stuck in the world of OpenCL and generally used by power users only who do large batches. And if you need any source files to standardise your testing, feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to provide you a file set. Thanks again!
Thank you very much for this detailed review. My situation is this: I'm considering to buy either MBP 16", 12/18, 36GB, 512GB SSD OR MBP 14", 11/14, 36GB, 1TB. Which one do you think I should get when we take in account the additional screen size, bigger battery and cooling capabilities of 16" as well as the unbinned chip. The only that worries me is the 512GB SSD on 16", do you think that would cause a bottleneck effect since 1TB SSD's seem to be faster? Do you think that 512GB SSD would in any way hurt better performance on the 16" as opposed to 1TB on 14"? Difference in price is minimal, cca 150 USD Thank you in advance.
choose the size that works best for what you need. never mind the SSD size to speed ratio, they are on par, and even if they are not, which they are, you'll be hard press to see any variation on the daily. 16 has bigger battery but then you are carrying that around as well. Better thermo sure, but the performance between 14 and 16 of the same SoC are identical. All SoC are binned, just how much, either way variation between the two is null at best. Like I said, I would choose the size that you need.
Thanks. Another excellent review. It seems quite clear that for intense/pro users what matters is good amount of memory and fast SSD. I think a very good machine to think about is the new Imac M3 with 24 GB and 1TB SSD. This configuration is the best value for money and it can handle intense tasks if required.
Right now macbooks are sale. And the 14 m3 pro 11/14 36+512 and 14 m3 pro 12/18 18+1024 are the same price. Which one should I choose? Could you give me some advice? Thanks!
Interesting comparison. What about M2 air 24gb vs M3 14 24gb? If I can't afford the preferred 36gb on M3 Pro. Which one is better? I mostly do coding and not video editing and have one ultrawide monitor. My current machine is 2015 MBP. Thanks!
So I have a pro question I’d like to get your thoughts on: For those of us working with many high res images in Lightroom Classic, the most critical speed bottlenecks are the executional ones: e.g., instantaneous viewing of the high res image as you flip from one image to the next, followed probably by instantaneous execution of brush masking etc. These are operations that involve a lot of rapid back and forth interaction between the human and the machine. Exports and imports where the computer is working on its own are less of an issue, as we can organize our paperclips or argue with our spouses about the price of a new wildlife lens while the computer works. 😀 What would you say is the order of importance on which spec to ramp up for those interactive executional functions? Cheers and thanks. 👍
I would always choose making your time as efficient as possible, since the computer can do what it does while as you say, do something more constructive with your time. Whether that’s possible who knows, I think that’s where AI comes in. I’m a canon DPP user and beginning to use Lightroom, Photoshop and Premiere and the M series chips really do smoke the previous i5 MBP 2014 13 inch I used
I'd also be curious to know how much the configs differ in this regard as this is where I noticed limitations on my 2020 M1 16gb the most. Using the clone stamp tool can be painfully slow on high res images. Click an area to remove a spec of dust, wait several seconds for it to clone out, click the next spec, wait several seconds, etc. Same thing with brushing/masking it can begin to lag significantly.
@@mvp_kryptonitehe's saying these are the tasks where you wouldn't be doing anything else. You're just working on an image, you click the next image in lightroom, it takes a few seconds to render the full res, then click to zoom to 100%, wait several seconds for the image to re-render, then use the clone stamp tool, wait several seconds for it to clone, etc. If going from the Pro at ~$2700 to the Max at ~$3900 makes a significant difference in these tasks, it may be worth spending the extra money.
Yes. The key for my work is avoiding a delay when examining images (the pause between showing the preview and the full res image as I move from shot to shot) and avoiding the spinning ball when I’m inputting edits via mouse or tablet. I’m about to move from Intel to M series, and am looking to maximize the bang for the buck. In every other major platform change since the original Mac (yes, I’’ve been at this for that long), RAM has always been the first priority, with processing speed coming after. So far, the testing shows what I would expect: adequate head room in RAM and SSD storage are important in this iteration too. But I’d like to get the thoughts of someone who has had hands on experience testing the new platform to confirm. Cheers! T.
If you can save money on the M2 Pro which you can somewhat do that now. or even better yet get the 14 M2 Max from Costco for about 2K right now that is a great deal. But in general I would go with Pro SoC vs non Pro. And regarding M3 Pro vs M2 Pro, the variation is small, so If you can get a better spec M2 Pro, i.e. more memory/RAM, SSD then I would go with that
28:24 excellent analysis Art! I’ve been using the early-2015 base MacBook Pro for the past 8 years, but I think you’ve just convinced me to upgrade to the base 14” M3P MacBook Pro with 32GB ram and base storage (rather than the top spec M3P chip with 18GB ram). Question for you though: do you think the 4 extra GPU cores on the top spec M3P chip would make a bigger difference if you were to play more intensive AAA games (I plan to install virtual windows and install Windows compatible AAA games into it) compared to other base M3P chip?
I would also love a take on this situation as i just downgraded from 18c gpu to the 14c gpu, I keep going back and forth on the decision in case I start doing more 3d renderings and playing more games on my mac...
I want to upgrade from my 2019 13” base model mbp. And hearing u recommend at least 32gb of ram. I’m considering buying the m3pro 14” with 36gb of ram and 1tb of storage. Would you recommend that configuration for someone who mostly uses it school work, coding, video/movie viewing and who uses After Effects for personal matters like editing short videos (normally within 10-20min) in 1080p and every now and then 4k. Idk my mbp now can barely run After Effects and that’s mainly why I want to upgrade and also SSD of course like 128gb is trash 😂 I can’t keep anything on it everything has to be kept in an external 🙃. Or is it overkill? I’d like to be able to use it for as along as I can too.
If you are not using the machine for intense photo work you might be able to get away with the base 14" model. Something to consider. But the Base M3 Pro in the 14" is a sweet machine
@@marcOandrz I went for the m3pro 14” with the 36gb ram and 1tb storage . I hadn’t upgraded since 2019. And if I was gonna spend money on a MacBook I might as well spend it on the one I know would do the job and more. I’ve been using it for a little over a month and it’s light years better than my previous MacBook. It runs everything I need so nicely and I don’t have to worry about storage.

Useful info, thank you. Considering either the 12/18 core M3 Pro 14", or the 16/40 core M3 Max 16". These comparisons are helpful. Near the end you called the 16 inch a "12 inch" and then again the "16GB model" ha, but never mind. Great info still. Much, much better than nearly all other Mac videos on RUclips, which are rushed out for views, and effectively just recite the press releases with no meaningful testing - "Oooh Space Black has less fingerprints - Hype!" - I really do not care... Silver will always be the best anyway :)
Amazing job what you did with your videos! Can you help me to decide please, if I should go with 14" M2 Max 12/38, 32GB, 2TB SSD or pay 300 extra for 14" M3 Pro 12/18, 36GB, 1TB SSD? Im doing mostly photo editing simultaneously in Lightroom and Photoshop for retouching (portraits, weddings, product photos), some music playing in background and Google chrome opened too. Im curious if I should go for newer generation for more battery life and less heat since its 14" size, or go for more powerful chip. Is it the same perfomance for my type of use? Or M2 Max will be more powerful? Because I would love to have less heat, less noise from the fans and better battery life but if its less power and better deal overall, I guess I would go with MAX. Thank you very much for your help!
Sir, what would you recommend 14MBP M3P 11/14 32 GB 512 GB OR 14MBP M3P 12/18 18 GB 512 GB ? Main usage for video editing with premier pro, Da Vinchi and after effects.

I hear you
Best testing video I've seen so far would've loved to see more about the Max. And graphics performance on games but I realize that probably isn't what you focus on
You are right. I don't really game
Hey art, idk if u can but can you do a blender sample scene render time comparison on the macbooks ?
Need a sample file
Hey, there. A very much appreciate your approach on reviewing/testing. Quick question: Will you include tests in Davinci in the future?
have been looking into it, if I do it won't be generational testing
That would be totally fine, kerp up the good work!
28:24 Do you think the 4 extra GPU cores on the top spec M3P chip would make a bigger difference if you were to play more intensive AAA games (I plan to install virtual windows and install AAA games in it)?
I don't think you'll see much variations
Art as always we HIGHLY Appreciate everything
Will you ever be testing the M3 pro 32 GB versus the M3 Max base that’s the next jump up between the two levels and we need to be able to see if it’s worth the extra money to jump up to
With real world testing with LRC and Photoshop?
Levels between previous model, and next model with allow us to decide whether it’s worth the price jump
Probably not. The routine now is to stick with Stock, unless someone want to lend me their machine for about 4 hours
Understand
how about the base 16 inch M3 Pro versus the base M3 max head to head with LRC and Photoshop?
Did you show that in your last video with charts and if so, head to head what benefits?
Is the m3 max on the 14” mbp and overkill? Previous editions were throttled in the smaller chassis. Should any Max chip be bought on the 16” mbp?
exactly what i searched for!
Nice!
Danke!
Welcome!
@ArtIsRight Dear Sir, is there any difference of internal structure between 14”MBP equipped 11/14 SOC and 12/18 SOC?
just the SoC
In Photoshop Speed you didn’t list the razor.
What is the reason?
Manoj
if you can save a good amount of money, M2 Pro. Either will do just fine really
Thx for all your effort, amazing 🙏
Thank you!
Hi Art, another great video! I have a question I work in event photograpy with a sony a7 iv maybe a sony A1 for later, I wanted to know if the MBP 16 M3 max 14cpu 30 gpu 36gb 1to would be suitable for Lr and Ps use?
Yes will be perfect. Maybe a bit more RAM if you are a heavy tab collector.
Totally!
Hello.. Can you compare the M1 Pro 16 inch vs the M3 Max base model 16"
Results are in the charts or you can check this video out as well ruclips.net/video/5r2D7EG4M38/видео.html
Hey, great video. What’s better? A 14” 11/14 M3 Pro with 36gb ram, or a 14” M2 Max with 32GB ram.
My main concern is temps. I want the fan running as little as possible
then 16" would be the way to go, but still unless you are working it hard then the 14" does not ramp up as much
Gracias
You're Welcome!
Nice analysis. I have the M3 Max base 14 more or less for the reasons you mentioned…
the best one this round
I'm not a computer guy. I just want to make an informed pick not to waste money. This was just excellent. Thanks
awesome!
THANK YOU.
You're welcome!
@@ArtIsRight i bought the 14 inch m3 pro with the upgraded 36gb ram yesterday by the way :) now just anxiously waiting for it lol thanks again for this video!
Good stuff, very happy with my M3 Pro, although I went with the 18GB RAM, I haven't felt any slowdown with multiple apps including adobe suite
Very nice!
Díky!
You're welcome!
Could you compare the base M2 pro MacBook Pro and the base M3 pro MacBook Pro ?
don't have that machine in the studio
Thank you for this video!!
You are so welcome!
Is it possible that the 16” screen has an effect on performance that makes the comparison not quite apples to apples (I.e., has a speed drain for the larger screen real estate?)
no, all of them has display engine that does not load the GPU
Do we really need to upgrade the unified memory to 36gb in the M3 Pro14" base model, incase we use it for running tensorflow and machine learning algorithms most of the time ?
Please help me decide.
probably not, but it does not hurt to have more
is the base M3 Pro good enough for smooth 4K playback and unreal engine? (No raytracing or high resolution textures, developing a cartoon 3D game)
probably
Same with the video yesterday, your charts have "13MBP M3", and should they not read "14MBP M3"? I get for the older laptops the "13" was applicable, but the M3 does not come in a 13".
Yup didn't catch that. Thanks for pointing that out.
You might have sold me on getting the $2k machine tomorrow…. Was debating it vs refurbished M2 Pro
That is a great value as well!
When you show all the graphs, it's hard to see the two reference systems your testing amongst all the other systems. I would do something to highlight those so they're more quickly obvious at a glance.
I'll consider that, thanks
hi, is fan noise a problem with this 14" model? Thanks!
With the M3 Max, the 14" will be the loudest and warmest with the worst battery life. Better to get the 16" M3 Max or 14" M3 Pro.
relative, just get what you need.
As always pretty impressive demo & content explanation 👍🏻
I‘d like to see DxO Photolab (7) in your comparisons, if possible.
😁
For AI/computer vision do you recommend the 14in 11 core cpu or the 12 core cpu, both would have 18gb ram
very little to no variation, still the same 16 NPU regardless of CPU variations.
Can anyone explain how the 11 core outperforms the 12 core on several tests?
better, surprisingly, not much about it. the software as we have time works better on the 11 than the 12 at this point
Dude your voice is so friggin young. Leave some egg yokes for the rest of us. Love the vid. thank you
thanks
I makefull hd editing videos, doing zoom meeings, using Canva, after effects, premire/final Cut while using the web and want a good battery. Do you recommand the 11/14 and 18GB for me?
You should be fine with that, a good base line machine
I'd really be interested in a comparison between the M3 Max with 14 core vs 16 core.
Coming Tuesday 11/14 - the date not CPU/GPU in the M3 Pro base ;)
Great! This will definitely be interesting, also in comparison to the M3 Pro and maybe even the good old M2 Pro. That being said, take your time, not sure how healthy your pace of pumping out those videos is. ❤ @@ArtIsRight
Sir could you please make a video comparison between macbook air 15 16gb/512gb vs macbook pro m3 base
not for this cycle
Firstly, thank you Art! What a deeply considered, useful analysis and presentation. I’ll be getting the M3P 14” 36GB 1 TB.
My question is about 11 vs. 12 cores vis a vis future-proofing: the difference doesn’t seem worthwhile now, but for those of us who want to keep this machine for 5+ years, might we see a more tangible benefit to 12 cores later? Or is the difference in speed for tasks likely to be essentially the same as now? (Also, will the fan be any more or less likely to kick on depending on number of cores?)
Once again - huge thanks, and really appreciate your presentational ways and the kind intention with which you offer your work!
I would say that the 1 extra cores will do you very little down the road.
Thank you! Do you see any downside to upgrading to 12 core besides money?
no downside like I said for the money spend you are better off upgrading your RAM, you'll see more performance jump, for the price significantly more.
Thank you again 🙏🏽 subscribing and will do what I can to help your channel succeed!
thank you!
What would you recommend for PTGui Pro in the line up?
used that a long time ago, have too look at the app again
@@ArtIsRight Thank you! And a whole heap of virtual tour photographers will love you for that. There are over 15,000 registered Google Trusted photographers around the world who probably would love to see PTGui Pro in the testing line up as is stuck in the world of OpenCL and generally used by power users only who do large batches. And if you need any source files to standardise your testing, feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to provide you a file set.
Thanks again!
Thank you very much for this detailed review. My situation is this:
I'm considering to buy either MBP 16", 12/18, 36GB, 512GB SSD OR MBP 14", 11/14, 36GB, 1TB.
Difference in price is minimal, cca 150 USD
Thank you in advance.
choose the size that works best for what you need. never mind the SSD size to speed ratio, they are on par, and even if they are not, which they are, you'll be hard press to see any variation on the daily.
Still only 8+10 cores though. Needs Pro and Max versions, 27", SD card slot, etc.
@@_Chris390, this would be my ideal and desired machine.
if you won't hit the limit of the M3 then sure
Right now macbooks are sale. And the 14 m3 pro 11/14 36+512 and 14 m3 pro 12/18 18+1024 are the same price. Which one should I choose? Could you give me some advice? Thanks!
I would go for more RAM
Interesting comparison. What about M2 air 24gb vs M3 14 24gb? If I can't afford the preferred 36gb on M3 Pro. Which one is better? I mostly do coding and not video editing and have one ultrawide monitor. My current machine is 2015 MBP. Thanks!
Get the M3 Pro, forego the regular M3 that is all I can say
@@ArtIsRight Thank you! 🙌
Great comparison like to know about the fan noise with the 14 inch High End 12/18 M3 Pro compared with the 14 inch Basic M3 Max
Don't have the 14 Max base, so it would be difficult to tell.
Ok thank's I enjoyed your review
So I have a pro question I’d like to get your thoughts on:
For those of us working with many high res images in Lightroom Classic, the most critical speed bottlenecks are the executional ones: e.g., instantaneous viewing of the high res image as you flip from one image to the next, followed probably by instantaneous execution of brush masking etc. These are operations that involve a lot of rapid back and forth interaction between the human and the machine.
Exports and imports where the computer is working on its own are less of an issue, as we can organize our paperclips or argue with our spouses about the price of a new wildlife lens while the computer works. 😀
What would you say is the order of importance on which spec to ramp up for those interactive executional functions?
Cheers!
T.
RAM and then SoC and then SSD. Upgrade them in that order / priority
Which would be better to go with m2 pro MacBook Pro 14 vs MacBook Pro 14 m3 16 gb also is it worth spending more money for the m3 pro vs the m2 pro.
If you can save money on the M2 Pro which you can somewhat do that now. or even better yet get the 14 M2 Max from Costco for about 2K right now that is a great deal. But in general I would go with Pro SoC vs non Pro. And regarding M3 Pro vs M2 Pro, the variation is small, so If you can get a better spec M2 Pro, i.e. more memory/RAM, SSD then I would go with that
ai summary: Recommend base 14" M3 Pro upgraded to 32GB RAM as the price/performance sweet spot around $2300
😀
Ya, but 512GB is kinda unusable.
@@rene.s.sadd external Thunderbolt ssd, problem solved.
@@rene.s.swhy is 512GB unusable?… especially if I have hard drives for photo/video work? Feel like 512 is plenty of space
Agree and if you would often use 512gb, you'd also often use 1TB anyhow. Need external unless you have 2TB.
in a 32gb Unified Memory 14MBP M3 pro do you think we will have heat problems ?
no
28:24 excellent analysis Art! I’ve been using the early-2015 base MacBook Pro for the past 8 years, but I think you’ve just convinced me to upgrade to the base 14” M3P MacBook Pro with 32GB ram and base storage (rather than the top spec M3P chip with 18GB ram). Thanks
I would also love a take on this situation as i just downgraded from 18c gpu to the 14c gpu, I keep going back and forth on the decision in case I start doing more 3d renderings and playing more games on my mac...
Excellent analysis. These system configurations Apple stipulate are so leading for spending more. $400 just to move up the ram from base is nuts
Yup, it happens many times that are engineering reason behind that as well
Please don’t forget the Logic Pro benchmarks!! Not all of us do video or photos
I don't use that pap
What did u choose?
@@marcOandrz I went for the m3pro 14” with the 36gb ram and 1tb storage . I hadn’t upgraded since 2019.

I would probably choose M2 Max in this case over the M3 Pro

or
MacBook M3 Pro 18GB RAM 512GB SSD 14-core 14.2 = 2.140 US
